  • Sebastian Stan Chose To Use His Marvel Platform To Run Towards Awards Season, Not Action Movie Paydays

At first glance, it looks like Sebastian Stan went through a standard list of easiest paths to an Academy Award, and his eyes lit up at the top two: Look different, or impersonate a famous person. If you can do both at once, all the better. This fall, Stan was on movie screens with two movies within weeks of each other, doing one, and then both. In A Different Man, he plays a man with neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes multiple large but noncancerous tumors; in The Apprentice, he plays a man with a far more dire genetic condition known as membership in the Trump family. Specifically, Stan plays Donald Trump in the ’70s and ’80s, well before he became the 45th or 47th president of the United States.

Stan, you may recall, is Marvel-ready handsome, most famous-ish for playing Bucky Barnes (also known as the Winter Soldier) in the Captain America movies and various adjacent Marvel projects. In other words, he has exactly the manner of good looks that the Academy loves to see altered by make-up and/or an impression. How does this man not have an Oscar in the bag? Hell, if he held one of the movies for 2025, maybe he could have won two in a row!

Yet with Oscar nominations due out this morning, Stan is a longshot fifth-slot contender more than a slam dunk; rather than complementing each other for the “you had a good year” effect, A Different Man and The Apprentice seem, if anything, at odds with each other, possibly leaving voters unsure of where to cast their votes. They’re also badges of honor representing some of Stan’s best work ever, so it’s only natural that he’ll probably be passed over for awards.

Though The Apprentice has made far more at the worldwide box office (albeit still not very much), critics and now streaming audiences seem to have chosen A Different Man, which recently hit its subscription-streaming window on Max. This is sort of a heartening development, because it’s by far the more difficult movie of the two, in a way that’s often delightfully antagonistic of its on-paper awards chances. Stan plays Edward, who despite his unusual condition aspires to work as an actor in New York. His next-door neighbor Ingrid (Renate Reinsve) is even a playwright, but he’s timid about attempting to take their friendship any further. But then doctors are able to offer Edward a miraculous procedure that rids him of his tumors. Edward jumps at the chance, and doesn’t stop there; faking his death, he reinvents himself as “Guy” and starts his life over.

A DIFFERENT MAN STREAMING MOVIE REVIEW
    Photo: Everett Collection

Yes, the elaborate makeup job is something of a feint; Stan spends most of the movie playing a man as conventionally handsome as, well, Sebastian Stan – though he does don a prosthetic mask simulating neurofibromatosis when he’s cast in the play Ingrid winds up writing about Edward (without realizing she’s cast this unrecognizable version of Edward to play himself). Edward/Guy is also vexed by the sudden presence of Oswald, another man with neurofibromatosis (played by Adam Pearson, who has the condition in real life) who has all the confidence and charisma that Edward lacks, in either form. The whole thing is far more Charlie Kaufman-esque, lightly surreal and sometimes bordering on dream/nightmare logic, than it is an inspirational story about the triumph of the human spirit. Edward doesn’t like himself very much as the movie starts, and, if anything, he becomes more frustrated and lonely after his transformation (and Stan’s anti-transformation), possibly because he now has something to hide.

There’s transformation at the heart of The Apprentice, too; when the movie joins a younger Trump in the 1970s, he’s an unformed version of the blustery quasi-showman unafraid to voice a high opinion of himself. This younger Trump has the coarseness and some of the baseline self-confidence – not the same level, but he yearns for a business deal that can prove his worth to his gruff father, without much evidence that he actually has any skills in that area – but lacks the forcefulness of personality, the ruthlessness that bulldozes over everything else. in the movie’s telling, he learns this from attorney Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), and by the movie’s jump to the 1980s, Trump has applied those lessons to his business, his family, his life… at what price, etc.

Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump in THE APPRENTICE
Photo: Briarcliff Entertainment / Courtesy Everett Collection

The movie doesn’t ultimately have a lot of depth, because Trump himself doesn’t, either – but to this end, Stan’s performance takes the “character” about as far as possible. He obviously doesn’t much resemble Donald at any age, so he needs to really embody Trump with, if not necessarily precision, some degree of continuity, and his work early on in the movie, where you can see a sort of messy outline of the future, more familiar Trump – his own lousy SNL-style impression of himself – is remarkable. A lot of thought and technique obviously went into it, and the movie was largely shunned by studios, seemingly out of fear of Trump reprisal.

There might be a hint of that resistance in Stan’s lack of awards attention for The Apprentice, too. But it’s more that both of his 2024 movies actively undermine popular awards narratives about what constitutes good acting. In A Different Man, Stan begins the movie having transformed himself, via some impressive makeup, into living in someone else’s skin, but he winds up making his personal default setting – a handsome guy who looks like he could be on TV or in movies – so deeply uncomfortable, even as it will look superficially familiar to anyone who has seen the actor before. He spends more time in different hair and makeup to play Trump, but it’s not to perform a flawless imitation of one of the world’s most famous people, but rather to strip away some of that familiarity and offer a greater understanding on what’s beneath. Counterintuitively, at least as far as Hollywood biopics are concerned, there’s little empathy involved in this process. We don’t find out that Trump is a sad, wounded little boy, even though the ingredients are there; we also don’t find out that Edward is a beautiful soul underneath his initially unconventional looks. Stan’s 2024 performances don’t strip away his good looks so much as they reveal the terrifying void that refuses to fully swallow them up.

Sebastian Stan has proven himself to be a versatile actor, showcasing his talent in both action-packed Marvel movies and award-worthy films. However, it seems that he has made a conscious decision to prioritize awards season recognition over big paychecks from action movie roles.

While many actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have chosen to stick to blockbuster franchises for financial stability, Stan has taken a different path. Instead of signing on for multiple superhero films, he has opted to pursue more challenging and nuanced roles in independent and dramatic films.

Stan’s commitment to his craft and desire to be taken seriously as an actor is evident in his choice of projects. From his critically acclaimed performances in films like “I, Tonya” and “Destroyer” to his upcoming role in the highly anticipated drama “Pam & Tommy,” Stan is proving that he is more than just a Marvel superhero.

By choosing to use his Marvel platform to run towards awards season recognition, Stan is carving out a unique and impressive career for himself. While he may not be raking in the same blockbuster paydays as some of his MCU co-stars, his dedication to his craft and willingness to take on challenging roles is sure to pay off in the long run.

Fans of Sebastian Stan can look forward to seeing him continue to push boundaries and deliver standout performances on both the big and small screen. With his talent and determination, it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a major player in Hollywood’s awards season circuit.

  • Why Ben Johnson chose the Chicago Bears, and what it means for Caleb Williams’ future

Another domino in the coaching world fell as the Chicago Bears officially hired Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. The move comes just days after the top-seeded Lions were eliminated from the postseason by the Washington Commanders, freeing up Johnson to focus on his next steps.

Johnson has been one of the most in-demand head coaching candidates of the last few cycles. Since becoming Detroit’s offensive coordinator in 2022, the Lions have finished top-four in total offense each of the last three seasons. Three of the four highest-scoring seasons in the Lions’ 95-year history came under Johnson, including a franchise-record-setting 564-point season in 2024.

One of the biggest drivers behind Johnson’s selection was undoubtedly a chance to work with 2024 No. 1 overall draft pick Caleb Williams. In Detroit Johnson undertook a similar developmental role with Jared Goff, who became one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL working in Johnson’s system. Goff posted three straight years of at least 4,000 yards under Johnson and set career highs in nearly every passing metric during the 2024 season. While Williams showed flashes of greatness during his rookie season, his real development begins now that Johnson is in the fold — Dianna and Chase, who played under Ben Johnson in Detroit, explain why.

The partial transcript below has been edited for clarity. You can listen to the full episode on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, or watch on YouTube above.

Dianna: We just had this moment of like, “Ben Johnson needs to go to Chicago and call it.” But I had known that he had some questions about the setup there, with [Bears president] Kevin Warren and [general manager] Ryan Poles, just some curiosities of how that would work. The whole idea that he wanted full control and full power, that’s definitely part of it. He was interested in bringing people he knows, people he trusts. In the end, he makes the decision to actually go to the organization where he’s not getting all that. This wasn’t about money. This wasn’t about roster control and power play. This was about one thing: Caleb Williams. This is the organization that’s got the talented quarterback. Because when you compare it, Tom Brady had a hard argument to make without having a quarterback in Vegas.

Chase: I think that for me, it’s crazy because I’m thinking about the roster of the Raiders and yeah, they got some players, right? Maxx Crosby. Then you just start really looking at like one through 53 of the Raiders roster. I’m like, “ehh.” You’ve got Brady, and he’s promising all these things, but there’s actually nothing there. And then you look at Jacksonville like, ehhhhh, Trevor Lawrence, OK. He’s on a veteran deal making $53 million a year. The roster control there, Trent Baalke, I don’t know what they’re going do, one through 53, I’m like “ehh.” It’s the Bears. What are you thinking about? I think he probably had a moment of clarity with this, like “Hey, like we have a legitimate offense.” They need three offensive linemen. They probably need another skill position, tight end — other than a Cole Kmet-type guy, this F who can do it all in his offense. But the thing about Caleb Williams is that there’s no doubt in my mind that he will be successful with Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson, quarterback whisperer, a top-five offense in every single year coordinating, in fact No. 1 or 2 a couple of years in a row. It’s just crazy how this stuff works out. I want to ask you this, because I thought the first thing that came to mind when all this news broke was he didn’t have an in-person meeting. He had a Zoom meeting. That’s crazy!

Dianna: Well remember, he wanted this Bears job last year. The Bears stuck with Matt Eberflus. They rolled it out and, well, it is what it is. We know what happened there. He’s had his eyes on Chicago. I do think, with all the options on the table and you’re listening to so many different people — and there were a lot of people in his ear, I’ve talked to people who’ve talked to him, too — everyone is chatting with him and telling him what he should be doing, and he’s open to guidance. I think, for the Bears, they’ve gone through this process of interviewing almost a dozen candidates. And while I know that they really liked Mike Vrabel, and I do think if Vrabel didn’t take New England, they would have hired Mike Vrabel. I think Ben Johnson was a home run for them as well. I think this is why I said that this whole coaching cycle was really about Vrabel and Johnson. Who was going to get them first? Timing is important. You and I talk about this with players with free agency.

    Chase: Timing is everything.

Dianna: Obviously, we know Ben Johnson had been coaching through this playoffs. The bye in the first round made it complicated for teams to jump in on him. Whereas we knew Vrabel was able to talk to Chicago right away because he didn’t have a job. What if that panned out? What if Robert Kraft decided to stick with Jerod Mayo? There are so many little moments, little things in decisions that could have affected it. But in the end, I think for the Bears, this is such a win.

Chase: It’s a home run hire.

Dianna: This is such a big day for Bears fans. And for Caleb Williams!

Chase: Well, it’s one of the most important hires in the history of the of the franchise, to be honest with you. They’ve been so down and out with all these different head coaches, all these different quarterbacks. They finally get the No. 1  pick in Caleb Williams, which is supposed to be this generational guy. And yeah, he played well at times this year. Yeah, he’s struggled this year. But if you look at the continuity of the offense, there’s just nothing there. One game, they’re under center, play action. The next game they’re this college USC offense. There was no rhyme or reason. When I’m a quarterback, I want to know the “why” on plays. Why are we doing this? Why are we getting under center? And I don’t think that Caleb Williams had a grasp on the “why.” That’s all that Caleb Williams will have a grasp on with Ben Johnson. That’s how he works. I was with him in 2020 when he was a tight ends coach for the Detroit Lions. You could just tell. Super smart, really low ego, high analytical guy, really understands relationships well. Obviously will take a lot of what Dan Campbell does from the leader men aspect and you know, put his own twist on it as well

Dianna: That was going to be my question for you. We joke on the show all the time about the “leader of men.” While we mock it, we know what they mean. They want these type of leaders to galvanize the locker room. Is he like that?

Chase: Yeah. He’s definitely on the — not shy. Shy is the wrong word. I’m trying to find a word for it.

    Dianna: Calmer?

Chase: Calm, yeah. It’s a little bit more laid back, a little bit more calm. He’s definitely not Dan Campbell biting kneecaps off. He has his own certain way. But I do think him being with Dan Campbell so long, and just the type of head coach that Dan Campbell is, I truly believe he’s going to take some of what Dan Campbell did and he’s going to do it. He’s gonna put his own spin on it, but at the end of the day, this was always about, like you said, Caleb Williams and getting an offensive mind. The number one thing, if I had to point to Caleb Williams’ issues at times this past year, it was all about timing. Timing within the pocket, timing in the passing game, going through progressions. That is what needs to get fixed. This hire fixes it.

Ben Johnson’s decision to sign with the Chicago Bears has significant implications for Caleb Williams’ future in the NFL. In this post, we will delve into why Johnson chose the Bears and how it could impact Williams’ career trajectory.

Johnson, a highly sought-after free agent tight end, ultimately decided to join the Bears due to their strong offensive system and promising young quarterback in Justin Fields. The opportunity to play alongside Fields, as well as the team’s commitment to developing a dynamic passing game, were key factors in Johnson’s decision.

This move to Chicago could have ripple effects for Williams, the talented quarterback prospect who is set to enter the NFL draft. With Johnson now in the mix, the Bears’ offense is poised to become even more explosive, offering an enticing landing spot for a quarterback of Williams’ caliber.

If Williams is selected by the Bears in the draft, he would have the chance to learn and grow alongside Fields and benefit from the rapport already established between Johnson and Fields. The potential for a dynamic quarterback-tight end duo could elevate Williams’ game and help him transition smoothly to the NFL.

Overall, Johnson’s choice to join the Bears signals a bright future for the team’s offense and could pave the way for Williams to thrive in the NFL. It will be exciting to see how this partnership unfolds and the impact it has on Williams’ career moving forward.

‘He chose to come back’: Jimmy Carter’s Georgia home town celebrates his life | Jimmy Carter

The signs, made by hand or machine, less than a meter squared or the size of a truck, were everywhere in this small town on Monday: “Thank you, Jimmy Carter.” “Home of Jimmy Carter.” And, left over from October: “Happy 100th birthday.”

Smiling portraits of the 39th president of the US were hanging around the town where he was born and raised – at city hall, in a restaurant.

Residents in the town of fewer than 600 going to work and running errands seemed unperturbed by the gaggle of TV news trucks gathered next to the railroad tracks that run through town, brought by news of Carter’s death on Sunday. They seemed accustomed to the attention that comes with being the home town of the longest-lived and, by many measures, most active former occupant of the White House.

All those who spoke to the Guardian had an anecdote on hand about the man they considered a neighbor, a “regular guy” who just happened to have helped eradicate guinea worm in Africa, won the Nobel peace prize and led a disastrous operation to free US hostages in Iran, among many other milestones.

Only a few minutes down US highway 280 from where Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, lived in town, Haley Beverly, 29, and her daughter, Rosemary, two, were picking up their mail shortly after noon. Beverly’s husband, Robert, has been the pastor at Plains Methodist church, next door to their house, for eight years.

“It’s the same church where Jimmy and Rosalynn were married,” Beverly volunteered. That was on 7 July 1946, and the couple stayed married for 77 years, until Rosalynn’s death in 2023. “We used to see them walking in front of our house, holding hands – and the black Escalade [of the Secret Service] following slowly behind,” she recalled. “Just like a pair of sweethearts, so down to earth.”

The repeated scene made an impact on Beverly. “We’re a young couple – to see a family built like that, in a pressure cooker like the presidency … that was a big inspiration for us,” she said.

Mayor Joseph Recker Jr inside city hall in Plains. Photograph: Jesse Pratt López/The Guardian

Down the road toward the center of town, the Plains mayor, Joseph “Joey” Recker, was unlocking the door to city hall, covering for the city clerk while she was on her lunch break. Recker, elected in May after the previous mayor had been in office for 40 years, said he and Carter were “backdoor neighbors”, meaning “my house butts up to his property”.

Recker, who is 60, said his children used to play on the Carters’ land, “shooting squirrels with a BB gun”, adding: “Of course, I would call the Secret Service first.” Noting the reaction the anecdote caused, he said: “That’s a normal way of living in Plains – though it might look odd to others.”

The mayor is also a musician, and remembers being hired to play piano at a birthday party for Carter when he was a young man. “He always made you feel like an equal,” Recker said. “I could talk to him like I’m talking to you.”

The mayor of Plains said that Carter “came along at a time when this nation needed honesty at the highest level. You could see he was an honest man, and that’s why he got elected. Whether as President Carter or Jimmy Carter, he lived what he believed. What you see is what you get … I don’t know if there’s a higher compliment you can pay to a man.”

As for his role following Carter’s death, Recker said, “My job, as mayor, is to wrap my arms around the locals, and make sure they get to grieve” – including fielding media requests, like a CNN interview he was scheduled for several hours later.

Across the railroad tracks from city hall, Milton Mills came out of the Plains Pharmacy, having left his bicycle unlocked in front. Now 62, Mills has lived in Plains since he was an infant. “I worked for him when I was 15 or 16,” he said, referring to the Carter family’s peanut farm, where Mills would pack peanuts into bags during summers, “to have money for school clothes”.

Milton Mills, raised in Plains. Photograph: Jesse Pratt López/The Guardian

Mills, who is Black, said that Carter “would talk up for Black people – but it was hard to make change”. When elected Georgia’s governor in 1970 , Carter made national headlines, memorably saying in his inaugural speech that “the time for racial discrimination is over”.

Yet Plains itself bears lingering after-effects when it comes to race. Mills pointed in one direction across the railroad tracks and said: “That’s where most white folks live.” In the opposite direction: “That’s the Black side.” The population of Plains is about 56% Black.

A retired welder, Mills said now that Carter is dead, “two or three years from now, there’ll probably be no stores open here, and this whole town’s gonna be a historic site”. For decades, visitors have come to Plains, to catch a glimpse of the former presidential couple, or to see Carter teach Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist church.

Over at Bonita’s restaurant, the only Black-owned business in the center of town, Bonita Hightower was juggling TV interviews and catfish and meatloaf orders. “I’m sad/happy,” she told a CNN reporter. “He left so much; he left a happy path for anyone who wants to do anything great. He did it, and came back to rest – and that’s what you’re supposed to do.”

Bonita Hightower, the owner of Bonita’s restaurant, the only Black-owned business in the center of Plains. Photograph: Jesse Pratt López/The Guardian

Hightower repeated an anecdote she has told elsewhere, about how Carter’s family would order fried catfish, cheese grits and coleslaw for the former president. “He could’ve chosen to live anywhere,” Hightower said. “He chose to come back home.”

Just then, three elderly Black women entered the restaurant. They had driven from Lafayette, Alabama. Barbara King, 84, said she “admired” Carter, as the “first to express his views on race relationships openly like that”, referring to the former president’s opposition to segregation and discrimination.

“I just wanted to be here,” said 77-year-old Sara Calloway, sitting across the table. “I cried for President Carter yesterday,” she said. “He was just a plain old white man who wanted to do good – nothing fancy about him.”

Former President Jimmy Carter may be battling cancer, but his hometown of Plains, Georgia is celebrating his life and legacy. Despite his health struggles, Carter has chosen to come back to his small town to be surrounded by the people who have known him for decades.

The residents of Plains are honoring Carter by organizing a series of events and activities to show their appreciation for everything he has done for their community and the country. From a parade to a special dinner in his honor, the town is coming together to thank Carter for his service and commitment to making the world a better place.

Carter, now 96 years old, may be facing a tough battle, but his spirit and determination are as strong as ever. He continues to inspire those around him with his resilience and dedication to public service. The people of Plains are proud to call him one of their own and are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate his life and legacy.

As Carter’s health remains uncertain, the town of Plains is choosing to focus on the positive and celebrate all that he has accomplished. From his time as president to his work with Habitat for Humanity, Carter has left an indelible mark on the world. The people of Plains are honored to have him back in their midst and are determined to make the most of this special time with their beloved neighbor and friend.

Nina Dobrev Almost Chose Boardwalk Empire Over The Vampire Diaries – Here’s Why She Said No

Did Nina Dobrev almost pass on The Vampire Diaries?

Back in the day, Nina Dobrev had to choose between Mystic Falls and 1920s Atlantic City. Yep, she was this close to joining HBO’s critically acclaimed Boardwalk Empire. The dealbreaker? A nudity clause that came with way too many question marks.

Dobrev spilled the tea during an interview for her Netflix flick The Out-Laws, and it’s a real “sliding doors” moment. “I wasn’t allowed to test for both The Vampire Diaries and Boardwalk Empire. And I didn’t know, like, how do you make a decision?” she revealed. Tough call, right? But the then-19-year-old wasn’t vibing with the Boardwalk Empire contract. “At some point, there might be nudity, and you’ll have to do it,” she remembered being told. Nope.

That clause was enough to nudge her toward the supernatural drama—and thank the vampire gods for that. Once she landed in Mystic Falls, Dobrev didn’t just play Elena Gilbert, the ultimate girl-next-door-turned-vampire—it was a one-woman show. Sweet, human Elena on one side, and on the other? The chaotic, scene-stealing doppelgänger Katherine Pierce.

And let’s talk about Katherine for a sec. Remember that jaw-dropper in the season 1 finale? Katherine waltzed into Elena’s life, stirred up chaos, and made viewers question everything. That moment? Classic TVD. But as much as fans loved Dobrev’s dual performances, pulling it off was no joke. Different styles, voices, and vibes for each character—and then acting against herself? It was a grind. Even The CW worried about burning her out, which likely led to Katherine being “killed off” for a while.

Now, what about Boardwalk Empire? Sure, it was a powerhouse series, dripping in prestige and Emmys, but let’s face it—Dobrev’s playful yet sharp energy probably wouldn’t have fit the Prohibition-era vibe. Still, imagining her in Nucky Thompson’s orbit is a wild thought.

In the end, Dobrev picked the path that let her sparkle—and sparkle she did. The Vampire Diaries catapulted her into superstardom, gave her a global fanbase, and proved she could tackle sweet and savage with ease. It’s a choice that didn’t just work out; it became legendary.

So, what’s the takeaway? Sometimes the riskiest moves are the ones you don’t make.

Nina Dobrev Almost Chose Boardwalk Empire Over The Vampire Diaries – Here’s Why She Said No

In a recent interview, Nina Dobrev revealed that she was offered a role on the hit HBO series Boardwalk Empire before ultimately deciding to star in The Vampire Diaries. Dobrev explained that while she was intrigued by the opportunity to work on a critically acclaimed show like Boardwalk Empire, she ultimately felt a stronger connection to the character of Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries.

Dobrev went on to explain that the character of Elena allowed her to explore a wide range of emotions and really sink her teeth into the role (pun intended). She also felt that The Vampire Diaries offered her more screen time and a chance to really showcase her acting skills in a leading role.

Ultimately, Dobrev’s decision to turn down Boardwalk Empire in favor of The Vampire Diaries paid off, as the show went on to become a massive success and catapulted her to fame. Fans of Dobrev are grateful for her decision, as she truly brought Elena Gilbert to life in a way that no one else could.

While it’s interesting to think about what could have been if Dobrev had chosen Boardwalk Empire, it’s clear that she made the right choice in pursuing The Vampire Diaries. The show will always hold a special place in the hearts of fans, and Dobrev’s portrayal of Elena Gilbert will never be forgotten.

Nina Dobrev Almost Chose Boardwalk Empire Over The Vampire Diaries – Here’s Why She Said No

Fans of Nina Dobrev were shocked to learn that she almost turned down the role of Elena Gilbert in The Vampire Diaries in favor of a role on Boardwalk Empire. In a recent interview, Dobrev revealed the reasons behind her decision.

Dobrev explained that while she was a fan of Boardwalk Empire and was excited about the opportunity to work on the show, she ultimately chose The Vampire Diaries because she felt a stronger connection to the character of Elena and the overall storyline of the series.

“I loved the idea of playing a strong, independent young woman who was dealing with supernatural elements and complicated relationships,” Dobrev said. “The character of Elena just spoke to me in a way that the character on Boardwalk Empire didn’t.”

In the end, Dobrev’s decision paid off, as The Vampire Diaries went on to become a massive hit and launched her career to new heights. However, Dobrev has no regrets about her decision and is grateful for the opportunities that both shows have brought her.
