Mavericks Notes: Doncic Trade Reactions, Thompson, Davis, Christie
Mavericks players learned about the Luka Doncic trade through Shams Charania’s tweet late Saturday night and they had the same incredulous reaction as everyone else, writes Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoop Journal (subscription required).
“I was like everybody – did Shams get hacked? It was a real big shock,” Dante Exum said. “I’ve been traded twice, and you just learn that it’s how this business works, and it’s something you have to adjust to.”
The aftershocks of the surprise mega-deal continued to reverberate throughout the league on Sunday, particularly in the Mavs’ locker room as they played an afternoon game in Cleveland just hours after finding out that their franchise player was headed to Los Angeles. With Kyrie Irving, P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively and Dwight Powell all sidelined due to injuries, Dallas couldn’t keep the game competitive, giving up 91 first-half points and losing by 43 to the best team in the East.
“It’s tough, but we all have a job to do,” Jaden Hardy said. “Obviously a lot of people were caught off guard, same with the team, like the rest of the world. He was special. A lot of guys felt for him. Still shocked right now.”
Hardy adds that Doncic sent out texts to all his teammates to say good-bye. He expressed gratitude for what they accomplished together and reflected on the bonds they created.
“He texted the team, thanking everybody for everything,” Hardy said. “That was nice from somebody that got traded, reaching out and letting everybody know his thoughts.”
There’s more on the Mavericks:
- After years of playing alongside Stephen Curry with Golden State, Klay Thompson decided to come to Dallas last summer to team up with another elite player in Doncic. Even though they were only teammates for a few months, Thompson isn’t second guessing his decision, Afseth tweets. “ I live with no regrets. I’m happy to be a Maverick,” Thompson said. “Incredibly grateful to be a Maverick. I’m excited to be in Dallas and I’m very excited for what’s ahead.”
- The Mavericks aren’t sure when Anthony Davis will be ready to make his debut, according to Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News. Davis suffered an abdominal strain last week, and the Lakers were planning to reevaluate his condition on Wednesday. Dallas general manager Nico Harrison told reporters yesterday that the injury isn’t “significant” and he’ll have a better idea of when Davis can resume playing once his physical is complete. “I don’t have a perfect answer for that,” Harrison said. “I mean, everything just happened. I don’t even think it was midnight last night, like 2, 3 in the morning. So we’re still trying to get physicals, figure out how long that’s going to take, get people into the market.”
- Max Christie was overshadowed by the bigger names in the trade, but he could turn out to be a valuable addition, observes Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News, who lists five things that Mavericks fans should know about the 21-year-old shooting guard.
The Dallas Mavericks have been making headlines recently with some major moves and player updates. Let’s take a look at some of the latest news surrounding the team:1. Doncic Trade Reactions: The Mavericks shocked the NBA world by trading superstar guard Luka Doncic to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for a package of picks and players. Fans and analysts alike have been quick to share their reactions to the blockbuster trade, with many questioning the decision to part ways with one of the league’s brightest young talents.
2. Thompson’s Impact: In the wake of the Doncic trade, the Mavericks have turned to newly acquired center Tristan Thompson to help fill the void left by the departing star. Thompson, known for his strong rebounding and defensive abilities, is expected to bring a physical presence to the Mavericks’ frontcourt and provide valuable veteran leadership to the team.
3. Davis Injury Update: Mavericks forward Anthony Davis has been sidelined with a nagging knee injury in recent weeks, causing concern among fans about his long-term health and availability for the remainder of the season. The team has been cautious with Davis’ recovery, but hopes are high that he will be able to return to action soon and contribute to the Mavericks’ playoff push.
4. Christie’s Emergence: Rookie guard Doug Christie has been turning heads with his impressive play off the bench in recent games, showcasing his scoring ability and defensive intensity. Christie’s emergence has been a bright spot for the Mavericks during a turbulent period of roster changes, and fans are excited to see how he continues to develop as the season progresses.
Overall, the Mavericks are facing a period of transition and uncertainty, but with new faces like Thompson and Christie stepping up, there is still plenty of optimism surrounding the team’s future. Stay tuned for more updates on the Mavericks as they navigate the rest of the season and beyond.

How Christie improved Kings’ chemistry with unconventional method
How Christie improved Kings’ chemistry with unconventional method originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Doug Christie has been pushing all the right buttons since taking over as the Kings’ interim coach, including some outside-the-box team-bonding activities.
During a recent road trip, Christie had Sacramento’s players participate in an escape room, sparking collaborative efforts in the hopes that chemistry carries over onto the hardwood.
“I always wanted to do one and check it out and I never had. I just had the thought like, we were supposed to practice, and then I was just like, ‘This is a mental practice.’ And we grouped them up together,” Christie told reporters on Saturday. “It was about communication, about team building, about being there together and trying to figure something out. We’re going into a gym on the road, it’s an escape room. We have to figure out how to get out of here with a W. And that was kind of the messaging, and they really had a good time.
“It was a lot of cheers, my team came in last — but we were in the hardest room from my understanding. But it was a lot of fun, lot of fun.”
Kings big man Trey Lyles described how Christie’s methods have helped the team bond in ways they hadn’t previously.
“I just think guys are in a good space mentally, physically. Doug had us do an escape room on the road and kind of just doing stuff like that we normally wouldn’t do as a team helps out a lot,” Lyles said. “Guys are just vibing a little bit more and team dinners and stuff like that. I just think everybody is in a good spot mentally right now and I think it’s showing, it’s translating to on the court and how we’re reacting on the bench and stuff like that.”
Sacramento entered Sunday’s game against the Washington Wizards with an 8-2 record under Christie, a testament to the energy he has injected into the Kings team.
After the escape room outing, Sacramento now will look to continue its spirited escape from the bottom half of the Western Conference standings as the Kings make a strong push for a playoff spot.
Christie, the team’s captain, knew that the Kings were lacking chemistry on the court. So, she took matters into her own hands and implemented an unconventional method to improve teamwork and camaraderie among her teammates.Instead of the usual team-building exercises or bonding activities, Christie decided to organize a cooking competition among the players. Each player was paired up with a teammate, and they were tasked with creating a dish together within a limited time frame.
The result of this cooking competition was not only delicious food but also a newfound sense of unity and collaboration among the Kings. Players who may have had conflicts or disagreements on the court were now working together seamlessly in the kitchen, laughing and communicating effectively.
Through this unconventional method, Christie was able to break down barriers and improve the team’s chemistry in a way that no traditional team-building exercise could. The Kings were now more connected and in sync than ever before, thanks to Christie’s innovative approach to fostering teamwork.

Cam Christie News: Plays garbage time in Sunday’s win
Christie (elbow) played the final 27 seconds of Sunday’s 116-102 win over the Lakers, scoring one point (1-2 FT) and recording no other statistics.
A rookie second-round pick, Christie had most recently seen action with the G League’s San Diego Clippers, though he sat out the affiliate’s 110-109 loss to the Capital City Go-Go on Thursday. The injury apparently wasn’t significant enough for the Clippers to recall him and make him available for Sunday’s contest with the Lakers. Though Christie hasn’t been a regular part of the NBA rotation this season, he got the chance to take the court in the final minute Sunday so he could share the floor with his older brother, Lakers wing Max Christie. The younger Christie will likely be headed back to the G League in the near future.
In Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, backup quarterback Cam Christie saw some action in garbage time as the Green Bay Packers secured a convincing win. Despite limited playing time, Christie showed promise and potential, completing several passes and managing the offense effectively. While Christie may not be a household name yet, his performance in garbage time is a positive sign for the Packers’ depth at the quarterback position. With starter Aaron Rodgers leading the way, Christie has the opportunity to continue developing and making a case for more playing time in the future.
Stay tuned for more updates on Cam Christie and the rest of the Green Bay Packers as they continue their quest for a successful season.

#Max #Christie #News #Efficient #victoryHOw Max Christie is finding his way with the Lakers
There are just over 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and Max Christie is in his familiar defensive crouch, deep in his stance, eyeing Tyler Herro on the left side of the floor above the break.
Herro has already made a huge impact in this Heat-Lakers game, hitting seven of his nine shots to that point, including all five of his 3-pointers, with several of his buckets coming at the expense of Christie, narrowing Max’s focus even further.
As he’s done several times tonight, Herro calls for a ball screen and Jaime Jaquez races up to wall off Max, bringing Anthony Davis along with him. Herro comes off the screen looking to shoot and a simple pump fake propels AD into the popcorn machine, looking to block a shot that never comes.
With any shot attempt now smothered by AD, Herro’s next read is to pass and he spies Jaquez on the roll, diving to the front of the rim with what looks to be a clear path. Herro throws the bounce pass to his streaking teammate, but instead of an assist, it’s one of Herro’s seven turnovers as Christie darts into the passing lane from behind, reaching around Jaquez to poke away the pass into the hands of Austin Reaves.
Austin then sees Davis streaking up the court and throws him an easy pass that Davis turns into an even easier two points.
In the boxscore, Christie did not get any credit for this play. The steal and assist were Reaves’ and the bucket belonged to Davis. But Christie was in the middle of it all and none of it happens without his ability to navigate the initial screen, recognize the switch, stay attached to the roll man and then work to get the deflection.
Plays like this are becoming more commonplace for Christie, whose grip on the starting spot he earned 15 games ago feels nearly as tight as that of his backcourt mate Reaves.
No, Max is not as accomplished, held in as high regard or asked to do nearly the same things on the floor as Austin, but he’s playing his role with a competence and confidence that is nearly as high as Reaves’.
And while Max was inserted into the starting group for his defense, he’s also finding ways to impact the other side of the ball, too. Since being inserted into the first five, Christie’s averaging 12.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 40.8% from behind the arc on nearly five attempts a game, 48.4% from the field overall and 87.5% from the foul line.
While those numbers do not scream out as being particularly special, a deeper dive into how those stats are coming about shows that Max is performing quite well at the job he’s being asked to do.
For example, since being named a full-time starter, Max’s shot profile is nearly exactly what you’d want to see and his success rate at the shots he’s taking most are pretty strong. Of the 122 shots he’s taken, 71 of those have come from behind the arc and over half of those (37) have come from the corners, where he’s made 48.6% of those attempts.
Similarly, on shots that are classified as wide open by the NBA’s tracking data, Max has made 17 of his 35 attempts from deep (48.6%), making defenses pay for leaving him alone around the arc — either by design or because they’re paying too much attention to his more renowned teammates.
And if he’s not shooting from deep, he’s doing so very close to the basket and making an extremely high percentage of those looks too. In those same 15 games, Max has made 23 of the 26 shot attempts he’s taken in the restricted area (88.5%), many of those dunks and layups on cuts or on rolls to the rim after running inverted pick-and-rolls with either LeBron or AD.
Max’s size, athleticism, explosiveness and ability to finish with force — even when taking some contact — makes him an ideal screen partner not just because of what he can do after catching the pass, but also in helping to free up the ball handler in the first place by being physical when setting those screens.
But even beyond these sorts of spoon-fed buckets, Max can also get downhill when attacking closeouts or even when using a simple ball screen to snake his way into the paint and then finish using his physical tools.
Against the Heat, two of his three made buckets inside the arc came on these exact sorts of plays: one on a nice drive and euro-step finish after getting a ball screen from LeBron and the other a tough finish through some contact that easily could have been a foul after racking a closeout from the right wing.
What we’re seeing, then, is a player morphing into the type of prototypical 3-and-D guard whose shot profile is nearly exactly what you’d want in an era influenced more and more by analytics and favored by his head coach.
(Side note: After Max scored a career-high 28 points against the Blazers back on Jan. 2, JJ Redick was asked about Christie’s strong performance, but before he issued Max many deserved compliments, he jokingly said he wanted to “wring his neck” for taking two early mid-range jumpers.)
Yes, there’s still much for Max to learn and improving for him to do. Mistakes of youth and needing to improve his feel and skill work are very much still a part of his development plan.
For example, in a recent loss against the Rockets, the Lakers were trailing by three and had a chance to tie the game on their final possession, but Max threw the ball away when facing a potential five-second call even though he had a timeout in his pocket.
LeBron tried to call the timeout when he recognized the play was not open, but as the inbounder, Max needed to recognize what was needed.
There are also times when he’ll rush a 3-pointer off a quick swing pass or, as Redick cited, work his way into a tough mid-range jumper rather than moving the ball to a teammate to keep the pressure on the defense.
On the other side of the ball, he can sometimes be too eager to help when it’s not necessarily needed, can get lost when tracking off-ball actions against high-level shooters, or can get caught in the blender of decision-making when switching everything and the defense is running a lot of screen actions.
Overall, though, there has been much more good than bad on both sides of the ball, especially since his move to the starting group. And after a very rough start to the season that saw him lose his rotation spot entirely, this stretch is not only encouraging for the production he’s offering but for the mental toughness and resiliency he’s shown to get to where he is now.
And, as a third-year player who is still a few weeks shy of his 22nd birthday, some growing pains are a natural part of the pathway toward becoming the player he can be. The hope — and, from the Lakers side, the belief — is that this growth is coming.
And considering the strides he’s already made this season, there’s reason to believe that will indeed be the case.

The Suns addressed a position of need by trading for Nick Richards on Wednesday, Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports writes. According to Bourguet, the Suns value the Kentucky product for his athleticism, defense, rebounding and size, along with the fact that he’s under contract for next season at a team-friendly price (a non-guaranteed $5MM).
In recent games, Phoenix has been at a disadvantage on the offensive glass, which Richards will help address. The former Hornet is averaging 8.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks while shooting 56.1% from the field in 21 games (nine starts) this season.
Suns players and coaches expressed excitement about being able to add Richards into their organization, according to Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic. Head coach Mike Budenholzer said Richards was expected to meet the team Friday in Detroit and that he foresees the center making his Suns debut Saturday against the Pistons.
“We’re excited about adding Nick and what he can bring to our team and how he can impact the game defensively around the rim,” Budenholzer said. “On the boards on both ends of the court. Screen setter. Just that kind of seven-foot size, athleticism can always be impactful.”
We have more from the Pacific Division:
- On Friday, ahead of his first matchup with the Lakers after being traded back to Brooklyn, D’Angelo Russell expressed that he was appreciative of his time with Los Angeles, but that he was ready to move on, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin (Twitter link). He called his second stint with the Lakers a “blur.” Russell scored 19 points, six rebounds and eight assists in the matchup on Friday night but missed a potential game winner.
- Kings head coach Doug Christie is a massive part of the franchise’s history, having been a key starter and contributor for the 2001/02 Sacramento team that fell in the Western Conference Finals to the Lakers. Now, under the interim Christie, the Kings have climbed from 13-19 to 21-20 and are firmly back in the postseason picture following the departure of coach Mike Brown. The Sacramento Bee’s Jason Anderson explores Christie’s journey from his tenure as a player to his time as an assistant for the team beginning in 2021.
- Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and his wife Connie Ballmer, co-founders of the Ballmer Group, pledged an initial $15MM to help combat the Los Angeles wildfires, they announced on their website. “We love L.A. and are committed to supporting the communities affected by the devastating wildfires,” the statement reads. “In coordination with our local partners, Ballmer Group will contribute to addressing immediate food and shelter needs in the community and supporting our first responders. … We’ve dedicated an initial $15 million in emergency funding for the many people impacted by these fires, particularly in the historic, racially diverse community of Altadena.” The full list of organizations and efforts they’re providing support for can be found on their site.

#Video #Evaluating #Doug #Christie #changed #Kings #style #playMax Christie Proud Of Ability To Bounce Back After Rough Start To Season
Coming into the season, there were a lot of expectations surrounding Max Christie. After signing a new deal to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, Christie was spoken about highly by both players and coaches during training camp and looked to be an important part of the rotation.
But Christie struggled at the beginning of the year, ultimately falling out of favor as his shot wasn’t falling and he was making mental mistakes on both ends of the court. But Christie has bounced back since and has thrived in the starting lineup as the Lakers’ primary perimeter defender.
The third-year guard recently opened up about the season so far with Jovan Buha of The Athletic, saying that he felt he was trying too hard to be perfect at the beginning of the year, but is proud of the way he has responded since:
“I think it was tough, for sure. There are a lot of things that happen in the offseason where you get re-signed, I have expectations for myself. Obviously, when you get re-signed, your expectations from the organization are obviously raised too. I think it was a lot of build-up for me. I think I just tried too hard, to be honest. I think I had too much emphasis on trying to play perfectly, do all the right things, and that led to me kind of thinking all the time when I’m out there. I wasn’t flowing. I wasn’t free. I was just rigid, playing like a robot. And for me, it was tough, seeing that happen, and then you see the decline in minutes. Then I’m out of the rotation for a few games.
“So it was tough. But I think looking back at it in hindsight now, I think I actually did a really good job of trying to mentally stay present and working through that. I don’t think I really gave up at any point. There were a lot of times when it felt like I was just in the gutter. But think I did a good job of mentally staying afloat, putting one foot in front the other and keep pulling away. Obviously, I’m out of that now. So, feels good. I’m pretty proud of myself for that. … If I had to talk about a highlight of the season so far, it’s how I bounced back from the beginning.”
That resiliency and not allowing himself to get too down is the type of mindset that led the Lakers to re-signing him this offseason. The franchise believes in his ability to be an impact role player and he is proving them right. And for Christie, turning the corner was more about clearing things up mentally than anything else:
“I think a lot of it was not really soul-searching, but I looked in the mirror and asked myself, ‘What could I do better as an individual player? How can I put myself in a better position to be more successful?’ And a lot of it for me was just my mental approach. I think I had some things I needed to clean up in my head, some things I needed to clean up in my social circle and whatnot. Just empty a lot of things and get back to basketball. I think I did a good job of making tough decisions and getting right back. Keeping the main thing, the main thing, really.
“It’s always good whenever I’m kind of struggling a little bit, to put the work in and trust that. That made me ready for that San Antonio game. I had to try and stack as many of those (games) together. I think I had a couple of good games. And now I feel completely comfortable.”
Christie has really settled into his role in the starting lineup, taking on the task of defending the opposition’s best guard while being ready as a spot-up shooter. He has also started knocking down shots from deep, which is a huge boost for the Lakers given their lack of two-way players.
JJ Redick: Max Christie starting gives Lakers more defensive optionality
Max Christie has the size, speed and length to defend many different kinds of players and for head coach JJ Redick, him starting allows for the Lakers to give many different looks defensively.
“I think Max being in the lineup gives us a little more optionality with how we want to match up with teams,” Redick said. “Within the game, not necessarily how we start matchups, but then being able to cross-match, which we did against Golden State.

It has been a rollercoaster of a season for Max Christie so far, but the talented young player is proud of his ability to bounce back after a rough start. From struggling to find his rhythm on the court to facing criticism from fans and media alike, Christie has faced his fair share of challenges in his rookie season. But instead of letting the negativity get to him, he has used it as motivation to work harder and prove his doubters wrong.
“I knew coming into this season that there would be highs and lows, but I never let the rough start define me as a player,” Christie said. “I have always believed in my abilities and trusted the process, and I am proud of the way I have been able to bounce back and show what I am capable of.”
Christie’s perseverance and resilience have not gone unnoticed, with his coaches and teammates praising his work ethic and dedication to improving his game. And as he continues to grow and develop as a player, there is no doubt that Christie will only continue to impress and prove himself as a force to be reckoned with on the court.
So here’s to Max Christie and his ability to bounce back from adversity – a true testament to his character and determination. The best is yet to come for this rising star.
