SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Doug Christie took over as the interim head coach of the Sacramento Kings amid a season-long losing streak, fans booing the team off their home court and questions surrounding the decision to fire Mike Brown, who led the franchise to its first playoff appearance in 16 years in 2023

Christie got his first win at the helm on Monday with a 110-100 win over the Mavericks, a victory that meant just as much to the team’s season as it did to him personally. It wasn’t particularly easy, with the Kings falling behind by 18 points early to a Dallas team missing Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

In the huddle, Christie told his players, “You’re getting close.” He cited a Bob Marley lyric about taking a bucket to the well and not knowing when the bottom will fall out. After the Kings picked up a couple of technical fouls in the second half, Christie stressed to his players that they shouldn’t allow the referees to derail the game plan.

They responded, closing the third quarter on a 17-2 run and snapping a six-game losing streak to give the 15-year NBA veteran his first win since taking over the Kings.

“Are we going to still struggle from time to time?” Christie said. “Yes, but the good will needed to happen to show that lot of things that we talk about — we’re able to do. Now, we need to do it with the consistency, the intensity and the violent aggression, in my opinion, that needs to be there to win games at this level.”

Domantas Sabonis, who had 17 points and 16 rebounds, said that seeing Christie get his first win was “really cool.”

“We’ve spent three summers now with him,” Sabonis said. “He works his butt off and just to see him installing what he believes in the guys, and the guys reacting that quickly to it is awesome.”

Being an NBA head coach, even with the interim tag, hasn’t yet sunk in for Christie. He had been busy with assistant coaching and scouting duties ahead of getting the promotion, planning to catch up on some sleep when the team was in Los Angeles over the weekend. Instead, he found himself at the helm against the Lakers, subsisting on 90-minute naps.

In a thrilling comeback victory, the Sacramento Kings rallied past the Dallas Mavericks to give interim coach Doug Christie his first win at the helm. Despite trailing by double digits in the fourth quarter, the Kings refused to back down and fought their way back into the game.

Led by standout performances from De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield, the Kings turned up the intensity on both ends of the court to outscore the Mavericks down the stretch. Christie’s leadership and strategic adjustments proved crucial in guiding the team to victory.

The win not only marked a significant milestone for Christie in his coaching career, but also served as a statement of resilience and determination for the Kings. As they continue to navigate through a challenging season, this victory will undoubtedly serve as a source of motivation and momentum moving forward.

Congratulations to Doug Christie and the Sacramento Kings on an impressive win. Here’s to many more victories to come under his leadership. #SacramentoProud

Kings’ Doug Christie gets 1st win after taking over for Mike Brown

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Doug Christie took over as the interim head coach of the Sacramento Kings amid a season-long losing streak, fans booing the team off its home court and questions surrounding the decision to fire Mike Brown, who led the franchise to its first playoff appearance in 16 years in 2023

Christie got his first win at the helm Monday, 110-100 over the Mavericks, a victory that meant just as much to the team’s season as it did to him. It wasn’t easy, with the Kings falling behind by 18 points early to a Dallas team missing Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

In the huddle, Christie told his players: “You’re getting close.” He cited a Bob Marley lyric about taking a bucket to the well and not knowing when the bottom will fall out.

“Yes, but the goodwill needed to happen to show that lot of things that we talk about — we’re able to do.

Instead, he was at the helm against the Lakers, subsisting on 90-minute naps.

Christie’s initial goals are incremental: simplifying the offense in the first game, followed by the defense in the second game. The Kings held the Mavericks to just 40 points in the second half.

He wants the fans, who have endured 12 coaching changes since 2007 with just one playoff appearance, to know that they are appreciated, that they’ll put a product on the floor that makes them proud and that they can root for players who gave it their all. From his players, he hopes for both understanding and love.

“This is hard,” Christie said before the game. “This is high leverage, the best in the world. There are only a certain amount of people who do it, from my perspective and the players’ perspective. Whatever you say about the word ‘pressure,’ it’s there.”

Christie said that his job involves letting his players play after putting them in a position to succeed. Part of whether he succeeds as coach will hinge on his best player, De’Aaron Fox, who pushed back earlier Monday on reports that he was involved in Brown’s firing.

Christie, who has been an assistant with the Kings since 2021, won two games as an interim head coach in 2022 when Brown was sick. But Monday’s win was his first on a semi-permanent basis, with the expectation that he’ll get the rest of the season to prove himself as a head coach.

One of the aspects that Christie hopes to improve is the team’s record in close contests. The Kings are 6-13 in games that are within five points in the final five minutes. He said that being “clutch” comes down to which players are willing to dive on the floor and “sacrifice themselves in a way that’s going to hurt.”

“When it comes to that point, what are you willing to do?” Christie said. “I know what I’m willing to do for you, and I’m going to support them in any way I can. Because it’ll always be my fault. It’ll never be their fault. They go do their job. I’m here to take the bullets.”

Christie said building off the win will involve understanding that turning the season around is a process and wins are a byproduct.

“It’s hard in this league,” Christie said. “Winning is difficult. So, totally understand that. I think they’re beginning to feel it, and that’s going to be the process that we have to go through on a night-to-night basis. I’m here for it, and I think that they’re ready to do it.”

In an exciting turn of events, former NBA player Doug Christie has secured his first win as head coach of the Sacramento Kings after taking over for Mike Brown. The Kings defeated the Portland Trail Blazers in a thrilling game, showcasing Christie’s leadership and coaching skills.

Christie, known for his defensive prowess during his playing days, has quickly made an impact on the Kings’ team, implementing new strategies and motivating the players to perform at their best. His dedication and passion for the game have resonated with the team, resulting in a well-deserved victory.

Fans are excited to see what Christie will bring to the Kings as head coach and are hopeful for a successful season under his guidance. Congratulations to Doug Christie on his first win, and here’s to many more to come! #SacramentoProud #DougChristie #KingsWin

  • Lakers Notes: James, Christie, Finney-Smith, Trade Assets

Lakers Notes: James, Christie, Finney-Smith, Trade Assets

All-NBA Lakers forward LeBron James, who’s been the league’s oldest active player since the start of the 2023/24 season, turns 40 on Monday. As Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press notes, James will become the first player in league history to suit up during his teens, 20s, 30s, and 40s. James will also become only the 30th player ever to log a regular season contest in his 40s.

“In some ways he’s a freak of nature,” said league commissioner Adam Silver of James. “I’ve been around a lot of great players and he’s one of the hardest-working players I’ve been around. I mean, he doesn’t take a day off. He seems to not take an afternoon off. He’s always working on some part of his body. You meet with him and he’s always soaking something or eating something with some contraption attached to him.”

The four-time league MVP continues to look like an All-Star, while playing in his 22nd season for the 18-13 Lakers. He’s averaging 23.5 points on .496/.357/.767 shooting splits, along with 9.0 rebounds and 7.9 boards a night.

There’s more out of Los Angeles:

    • Although Lakers swingman Max Christie started his third season a bit unsteadily, he has rounded into form of late, and prior to L.A.’s trade for three-and-D wing Dorian Finney-Smith and point guard Shake Milton, Christie had emerged as head coach JJ Redick‘s choice to round out his starting five. The arrival of Finney-Smith may change his role, but Christie has finally begun to deliver on the promise of the four-year, $32MM deal he inked to stay with Los Angeles over the summer. During a lengthy interview with The Athletic’s Jovan Buha, Christie addressed his big third pro season. “There are a lot of things that happen in the offseason where you get re-signed, I have expectations for myself,” Christie said. “I think I had too much emphasis on trying to play perfectly [early in the season], do all the right things, and that led to me kind of thinking all the time when I’m out there. I wasn’t flowing. I wasn’t free.” Christie has really made the most of his time back in the rotation over the past month. “It’s been really good so far, honestly. I look back at it and reflect on my whole career up to this point,” Christie said. “I hadn’t really played a lot, and then I was just trying to work and work and work.”
    • The Lakers surrendered three second-round draft picks to acquire Finney-Smith and Milton, in addition to the expiring $18.7MM deal of reserve guard D’Angelo Russell and second-year forward Maxwell Lewis. Zach Harper of The Athletic praises the deal for Los Angeles team president Rob Pelinka. Harper projects that the 6’7″ Finney-Smith will immediately join the Lakers’ starting lineup, with Christie being promoted back to the bench. He’ll add defensive length along the perimeter, plus a solid three-point shooting stroke. Harper is pessimistic that Milton will crack Redick’s rotation ahead of reserve point guard Gabe Vincent.
    • Just who gets demoted to the Lakers’ bench has yet to be determined. Jovan Buha of The Athletic thinks forward Rui Hachimura could become a reserve, meaning Max Christie would play alongside Finney-Smith in a new starting unit. Buha notes that the deal will help free up some money for Los Angeles. The team is now $3.5MM below the league’s restrictive second tax apron. Losing Russell means the Lakers are sacrificing some playmaking, while gaining defense and off-ball shooting. Los Angeles still has some trade assets at its disposal if it wants to continue making deals. In addition to two remaining second-round picks and three first-round pick swaps, the Lakers have three tradable future first-round draft selections, but can move only two at most due to the Stepien rule.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been making headlines recently with a mix of player performances, injury updates, and trade rumors swirling around the team. Here are some key notes to keep in mind:

    1. LeBron James continues to be a force on the court, leading the Lakers in scoring and assists. Despite his age, James shows no signs of slowing down and remains a top contender for MVP honors.

    2. Lakers rookie guard Austin Reaves has been turning heads with his strong play and has earned praise from head coach Frank Vogel. Reaves has shown great poise and basketball IQ, making him a valuable asset for the team.

    3. Forward Doug Christie has been a solid contributor off the bench for the Lakers, providing energy and defense. Christie’s hustle plays and willingness to do the dirty work have endeared him to fans and teammates alike.

    4. Forward Dorian Finney-Smith has emerged as a potential trade target for the Lakers, as they look to bolster their roster for a deep playoff run. Finney-Smith’s defensive versatility and three-point shooting make him an attractive option for teams in need of wing depth.

    5. The Lakers have a number of trade assets at their disposal, including young players, draft picks, and expiring contracts. With the trade deadline approaching, the team will be looking to make moves to improve their championship chances.

Overall, the Lakers are a team to watch as they navigate the ups and downs of the NBA season. With a mix of star power, young talent, and trade assets, the team has the potential to make noise in the playoffs. Stay tuned for more updates on the Lakers as the season unfolds.

  • Doug Christie to coach Kings for season, Mike Brown’s press conferences factored into firing, per report

Doug Christie to coach Kings for season, Mike Brown’s press conferences factored into firing, per report

The Sacramento Kings fired Mike Brown on Friday, but they are not starting a coaching search. Doug Christie, who will serve as interim head coach when the Kings visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday, is expected to remain in that position for the rest of the season, according to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater and Sam Amick.

Christie has been an assistant coach in Sacramento since 2021. He played for Rick Adelman’s Kings from 2000 to 2005, starting at shooting guard on the team that was one win away from the NBA Finals in 2002. Christie was also Sacramento’s color commentator with NBC Sports California from 2018 to 2021.

When Christie initially joined the team as a coach, he was on Luke Walton’s staff. As The Athletic noted, he was seen as a potential replacement when the Kings fired Walton in November 2021. Alvin Gentry ended getting the job, but ESPN reported at the time that Christie was a candidate. According to The Athletic, team owner Vivek Ranadive “made it clear that he saw Christie as a viable alternative” when negotiating a deal to remove Gentry’s interim tag.

Also reported by The Athletic’s Slater and Amick:

    • Kings players and staffers found out about Brown’s firing minutes before ESPN’s Shams Charania reported it.
    • Ownership signed off on the decision after Friday’s practice. When Christie was offered the interim job in a meeting, most of the team’s traveling party had already boarded its flight to Los Angeles.
    • Ranadive “has been notably upset with the team’s recent play,” but “team sources insisted the decision to fire Brown was [general manager Monte] McNair’s.”
    • McNair and assistant general manager Wes Wilcox are “considered safe” despite the issues with Sacramento’s roster. The front office is looking to add depth between now and the trade deadline.
    • Brown’s “stern news conferences were beginning to wear on some players, team sources said, and were part of the decision to part ways with Brown.” It is implied, but not stated directly, that guard De’Aaron Fox is one of those players. After the Kings collapsed against the Detroit Pistons on Thursday and lost their fifth consecutive game, Brown called out the team — and Fox specifically — for the poor defensive execution that led to Jaden Ivey’s game-winning four-point play. That same night, Fox gave terse answers to questions about what had gone wrong and what needed to change. After what turned out to be Brown’s last practice, he and Fox had an “extended discussion” in view of reporters.

Christie will be Sacramento’s eighth coach since Ranadive bought the team in 2013. The first coach of the Ranadive era, Michael Malone, blasted the franchise on Friday for both the decision and the way they communicated it to Brown: “He does his media, and he’s in his car going to the airport to fly to L.A. and they call him on the phone. No class. No balls. That’s what I’ll say about that.”

Brown, who in 2023 became the NBA’s first unanimous winner of the Coach of the Year award, signed an extension last June. After adding DeMar DeRozan to the mix in July, the Kings have had a disappointing season, especially when it comes to crunch-time performance. It is difficult, however, not to see this firing as shortsighted. Despite the NBA’s worst shot profile — they lead the league in long 2s and get to the rim less frequently than all but one team, per Cleaning The Glass — and iffy defensive personnel, they have a positive (and above-league-average) point differential. Without meaningful changes to the roster, no one should expect Christie to make turn Sacramento in an elite team.

At the same time, no one should hold the circumstances in which Christie got this opportunity against him. It’s not his fault that the franchise appears to be falling back into familiar patterns just two years after its charmed 2022-23 season. Since the Kings parted ways with Adelman in 2006, they’ve only had one coach (Dave Joerger) who has lasted three full seasons. Who’s to say Christie won’t be the second? He has never been in this position before, so no one knows how he’ll take to it.

One thing to watch for the rest of the season (and especially in the next five-ish weeks) is how Fox responds to Christie. The 27-year-old guard does not appear to be in line for an All-NBA berth, so he will likely not be eligible to sign a supermax extension with Sacramento next summer. If he doesn’t sign an extension at all, then 2025-26 will be a contract year, so his future with the team is increasingly uncertain. The trade deadline is Feb. 6.

The Sacramento Kings have reportedly made a coaching change for the upcoming season, with Doug Christie set to take over the reins. The decision to move on from former head coach Mike Brown was said to be influenced by his lackluster performance in press conferences, according to sources close to the team.

Christie, a former NBA player and longtime broadcaster for the Kings, is no stranger to the organization. His strong ties to the team and his basketball knowledge make him a natural fit for the coaching position.

Fans are eager to see how Christie will fare in his new role and are hopeful that he can lead the Kings to success in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Interim coach Doug Christie has Kings ‘ready to play’

Interim coach Doug Christie has Kings ‘ready to play’

LOS ANGELES — Doug Christie rapped along to the lyrics of Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day” on Saturday morning as the song echoed through the gym at USC’s Galen Center at the conclusion of his first shootaround as interim coach of the Sacramento Kings.

More than 30 years after Christie was a rookie with the Los Angeles Lakers, he found himself back in L.A., preparing to face the Lakers in his first game since taking over for Mike Brown, who was fired Friday afternoon before the team’s flight down the West Coast.

It has been anything but a good season for the Kings thus far, No. 13 in the Western Conference with a 13-18 record — having lost five games in a row and 12 of their past 17.

However, Kings guard Malik Monk — who credited Brown’s “passion” in turning the franchise around the past two seasons — said the coaching change resulted in an energy shift at the shootaround session.

“All the vibes were high,” Monk said. “Everybody is happy. Everybody is ready to play tonight.”

Included in the group ready to play was All-Star big man Domantas Sabonis. He missed Sacramento’s last game Thursday with an illness, when the Kings failed to protect a 19-point second-half lead in a 114-113 loss to the Detroit Pistons.

Sabonis did not join the team on its flight to L.A., as he was questionable to play because of the illness, but arranged his own travel Saturday morning to be a part of the first steps with Christie.

“I got here and went right onto the court,” Sabonis said. “We’re all focused on winning the game. But we obviously know we haven’t been performing at our best. And we have to do a better job. Me, as one of the leaders of the team, I got to make sure that that happens. We got to win all the games that we can.”

Following the Pistons game, Brown called out another one of Sacramento’s leaders, De’Aaron Fox, for fouling Jaden Ivey on a 3-pointer in the waning seconds with the Kings up by 3. Ivey hit the 3 and the ensuing free throw, costing the Kings the game.

Before Brown was dismissed, he led the Kings’ practice Friday and was seen by reporters having a conversation with Fox on the court.

“We were talking about in-game stuff, what we would do towards the end of games,” Fox said after the shootaround. “Definitely didn’t know that that little conversation — that’s really normal — would have been the last one with him as a head coach.”

Brown was informed of the decision by Kings general manager Monte McNair, who called him when the 2022-23 NBA Coach of the Year had already left the practice facility to get ready for the flight to L.A.

Sabonis, who said he was sleeping when the decision was made, called it “shocking.” Monk said he found out on X and was also shocked, but added: “It’s the NBA. Anything can happen. So, next man up, I guess.”

Fox said he was “surprised” but was given a heads-up. “I found out a minute before everybody else did,” he said.

After Brown signed an extension in the offseason through 2026-27 — adding more than $20 million in guaranteed money to what he was already owed — Fox credited the continuity of the Kings organization.

A reporter asked Fox on Saturday if he felt any “pressure or guilt” over the way things unraveled so quickly with Brown.

“Any pressure or guilt? I mean, obviously we all know the job that we have,” Fox said. “You can be traded at any point. Released. Cut. Fired. Whatever it may be. I mean, I wouldn’t use the word ‘guilt.’ But that’s the nature of the job that we have.

“But I mean, obviously him signing his extension this summer, we felt like we would be together a whole lot longer but that’s the decision that they made. But at the end of the day, too, he’s still being paid. A great part of being an NBA player, being an NBA coach, is those things can happen, but these contracts are guaranteed.”

Christie addressed the team before its flight to L.A. and again at the Galen Center. His message?

“To come out and stick together, fight and just be us, be who we are and turn this thing around,” Sabonis shared.

And Monk had a message of his own for Kings fans who saw their team break a 17-year postseason drought in 2023, only to have their coach fired two seasons later.

“Sorry, fans,” Monk said. “We’re going to turn it around. That’s it. Short and sweet.”

Interim coach Doug Christie has Kings ‘ready to play’

Sacramento Kings fans have been buzzing with excitement since former player and fan-favorite Doug Christie was named as the interim head coach. Christie, who played for the Kings from 2000-2005, has wasted no time in getting his team prepared and motivated for the upcoming games.

In a recent interview, Christie expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to lead the Kings and stated that he has been working tirelessly to instill a winning mindset in his players. He emphasized the importance of teamwork, communication, and hard work, and it’s clear that his message has resonated with the team.

Despite the challenges of taking over mid-season, Christie has already made a positive impact on the Kings. The players have responded well to his coaching style, and there is a renewed sense of energy and determination on the court.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the Kings’ next game under Christie’s leadership, and there is a sense of optimism and hope for the future of the team. With Christie at the helm, the Kings are in good hands and are definitely ‘ready to play’.

    2. Develop an emergency response plan: Create a detailed plan that outlines how to respond to different types of emergencies, including evacuation procedures, communication protocols, and responsibilities of staff members during an emergency.

    3. Train staff and students: Ensure that all library staff members are trained in emergency procedures and know their roles and responsibilities during an emergency. Conduct regular drills and exercises to practice the response plan with students and staff.

    4. Secure important documents and resources: Keep important documents, such as emergency contact information, insurance policies, and inventory lists, in a secure and easily accessible location. Backup digital resources and data to prevent loss during a disaster.

    5. Collaborate with school administration and emergency responders: Coordinate with school administrators, security personnel, and local emergency responders to ensure a coordinated and effective response to emergencies. Establish communication channels to keep everyone informed during an emergency.

    6. Provide support and resources for students and staff: Be prepared to provide emotional support and resources for students and staff who may be affected by an emergency or disaster. Offer access to counseling services, community resources, and information on disaster recovery.

By taking proactive steps to develop an emergency preparedness and disaster recovery plan, school librarians can help ensure the safety and well-being of their school community during times of crisis. Stay informed, stay prepared, and stay safe!
