¡Vamos Gunners!

  • Preview: Arsenal v Man City | Pre-Match Report | News

The big games just keep coming as we once again put the only unbeaten home record in the Premier League on the line against Manchester City on Sunday (4.30pm UK).

Having battled hard with Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side for the past couple of seasons, we find ourselves six points ahead of them and with the upper hand in the recent meetings, having remained unbeaten in our last four clashes.

That form will have to be maintained if we’re to keep up our title push, especially now City’s winter of woe seems to have thawed. They’ve registered some important wins to return to something like the force they have been for the past few seasons, so it seems that once again, this fixture could have a huge say in the destiny of the Premier League title.

    City’s confidence returning?

Having been unbeaten in their first nine league games, City were looking odds-on to win a fifth league title in a row, but suddenly their form and confidence plummeted. Cup defeats to Tottenham and Sporting Lisbon were then followed by league losses to Bournemouth, Brighton and Spurs again, this time by a 4-0 scoreline to condemn Pep Guardiola to five straight losses for the first time in his glittering managerial career.

A 3-0 lead against Feyenoord was then squandered before a loss against Liverpool followed, and despite beating Nottingham Forest, they were beaten by Juventus and endured two draws and two defeats over Christmas, incredibly leaving them with one win from 13 matches.

But things have begun to return to normal. They’re now unbeaten in six Premier League games, and only Newcastle have won more points since Christmas than City’s 14. A 4-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain last week left their hopes of remaining in the Champions League on the brink, but after a 3-1 home win against Chelsea they overcame Club Brugge by the same scoreline on Wednesday to set up a play-off clash against Real Madrid.

    What the managers say

Arteta: “[A win] would be a big boost for us. Winning big matches is always something special. Every time we play a big match against one of our big rivals it brings something extra – the confidence, the emotion, the fact that they are there and continue to win – for that we want to achieve.

“The business is to be better than them. That’s it. The only thing I review is what happened during that match, how competitive it gets is normal when two big teams want to win the game. Nothing else from that side.”

Guardiola: “We started [this run of games] in Paris, then afterwards Chelsea, so we are already there in terms of difficult games. The schedule is what it is.

“It always happens in the Premier League, always they put the toughest [fixtures] – always they are so kind with the calendar. For many years it happens that way. We had amazing success dealing with this calendar. It’s always been like that, we accept it, I’m not complaining because we won the treble.”

    Team news

David Raya missed the midweek Champions League win in Girona with a muscular injury with Neto deputising, and the Brazilian is on standby again if our number one isn’t available, but one player who is is Myles Lewis-Skelly after his red card against Wolves was rescinded.

England duo Ben White and Bukayo Saka remain out after knee and hamstring surgery, while Takehiro Tomiyasu and former City man Gabriel Jesus are also missing with their own knee injuries.

Rodri’s ACL injury picked up in the reverse fixture has hampered City all season but he could be back before the end of the season. Ruben Dias, Jeremy Doku and Nathan Ake have sat out recent games and Guardiola admitted they won’t be fit in time for this game.

Oscar Bobb is back in training following a leg fracture, while January arrivals Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis can all feature again after being ineligible in the Champions League. Kyle Walker joined AC Milan on loan earlier this week.

    Talking tactics

Adrian Clarke, writing in the official matchday programme: City have shifted between a 4-1-4-1 and a 4-2-3-1, with the use of Kevin de Bruyne crucial to which set-up Guardiola prefers. If he is leaning towards a possession-based attacking approach, the Belgian will usually play as a No. 10 but if not, he becomes a box-to-box midfielder in a gameplan more suited to breaking at speed on fast transitions.

Averaging a league-high 61% of possession, City want to monopolise the ball. Bypassing our press by going long to Erling Haaland is an obvious ploy if he is left 1v1 with a marker, but roving left-back Josko Gvardiol also likes to make dangerous runs beyond the defensive line. He can be expertly picked out by keeper Ederson, or a central defender.

City have had more shots than any other team, and have netted a division-high nine times from outside the box. Egyptian star Omar Marmoush has been added to their ranks this month who scored 15 goals in 17 starts for Eintracht Frankfurt prior to the move, so his finishing prowess has to be respected.

However Rodri’s absence means City have also been more susceptible to counter-attacks through the middle, and only three Premier League sides have faced more shots from fast break, and their unusually porous defending has limited them to just five clean sheets in 23 matches.

    Facts and stats

We are unbeaten in 13 Premier League matches and have won the most points of any side from MD11 onwards (29). We have never had a longer unbeaten run under Mikel Arteta, last going 14 without defeat between August and December 2018.

City have lost just one of their last 40 league matches played from January until the end of the season (W33 D6). They are unbeaten in their last 23 of these games across the last two campaigns.

We have scored the most goals via set pieces (12, excl. pens) in the Premier League this season, while City have conceded the joint-fewest of these goals (2, level with Brentford). One of those though was Gabriel’s goal in the 2-2 draw in September, and five of the last 10 goals we have netted against City have come via corners.

39.6% of the minutes played by Manchester City players in the Premier League this season
have been given to players aged 30 or older.

Phil Foden has scored in four consecutive Premier League games for the very first time, while he’s scored more Premier League goals so far in 2025 than any other player (6).

Kevin De Bruyne has 12 goal involvements in 14 Premier League starts against us, while his eight goals are more than he’s managed against any other side in the competition.

City are unbeaten in their last nine Premier League games in London, since their loss at Emirates Stadium in October 2023.

Manchester City have won more points from losing positions than any other side in the Premier League this season (17), with five of their 12 wins coming after conceding the first goal.

    Match officials

Peter Bankes will be the man in the middle, the third time he’s been handed one of our games this term following our New Year’s Day win at Brentford, and the League Cup success at Preston North End. We’ve lost just twice in 10 games under his watch, which both came at Southampton in 2021 and 2022.

He’s handled two Manchester City matches this season, the last of which saw them lose 2-1 to Aston Villa in December. While he has never booked more than two players or awarded a penalty in any Gunners game, he has pointed to the spot five times in 14 Premier League games this term.

    Recent visits from City

Last season saw us end a 12-game losing streak home and away against City courtesy of a 1-0 win in October 2023, sealed by an 86th-minute strike by Gabriel Martinelli. That means we could win consecutive home league games against City for the first time since 2009.

The previous February saw City leapfrog us at the top of the table courtesy of a 3-1 victory, with Kevin De Bruyne opening the scoring before Saka levelled from the penalty spot. However second-half strikes from Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland won the game.

Guardiola’s team had previously pitched up in N5 on New Year’s Day 2022, when a last-minute Rodri goal snatched victory for the visitors. Saka had given us the lead, but a Riyad Mahrez penalty and a red card for Gabriel changed the game.

  • Arsenal vs. Manchester City: Live stream English Premier League match today

LONDON — Manchester City looks to capitalize on momentum from a big win against Club Brugge last week as it faces rival Arsenal in an English Premier League match Sunday at Emirates Stadium. The match is slated to start at 11:30 a.m. Eastern on Peacock.

City trails Arsenal in for second place in the league standings, and manager Pep Guardiola believes his club has what it takes to pull ahead.

Arsenal needs a victory in order to keep pace with frontrunning Liverpool, which has steadied the ship after a troublesome midseason stretch.

City has gone six matches without a loss and is coming off a win against Chelsea as its goal scoring has picked up of late. Guardiola’s crew has tallied 30 goals in its last eight outings.

Phil Foden has six goals in his last seven matches, and City could soon see Oscar Bobb return after a five-month absence.

Arsenal has been inconsistent, fighting to a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa after leading 2-0. The Gunners have also registered a pair of draws against Brighton. Standing six points behind Liverpool, it could be do-or-die time for Mikel Arteta’s crew.

The two clubs met in September in a contentious match that ended all square at 2-2. John Stones delivered the tying score for City, with Arsenal down a man. Tempers flared at the conclusion as a scuffle broke out on the pitch.

  • The Arsenal-Man City rivalry: fear, loathing and a shifting of power?

Oleksandr Zinchenko had failed to read the room. Last summer, on vacation in the south of France, the Arsenal left-back had nowhere to run. Not in a metaphorical sense: he needed to find a pitch to maintain his fitness for a couple of hours a day before returning to Premier League duty.

Fortunately, he thought, he had an old friend who might be able to help. Zinchenko noticed on Instagram that Bernardo Silva, his former team-mate at Manchester City, was holidaying on the Riviera, too. Silva had spent a couple of seasons at Monaco. Assuming he would be able to point him in the direction of a place to train, Zinchenko dropped him a message.

The exchange, as Zinchenko relays in his autobiography, Believe, was good-natured. “For what?” Bernardo wrote back. “You’re going to try to win the Premier League again? Forget about it. Stay at home.” Zinchenko plays the incident for laughs. It is, though, indicative of the rivalry that has emerged between their respective teams that Bernardo does not appear to have helped.

The easiest historical parallel for the relationship between Manchester City and Arsenal — the one that has animated the last two Premier League seasons, and the one that will flicker again at the Emirates on Sunday — is perhaps the feud between Liverpool and Chelsea that burst into life two decades ago.

The two conflicts are similar in essence: old money against new, aristocracy against the arrivistes, establishment against the insurgent; the hostility is rooted not just in a mutual quest for honours but a fundamental disagreement about who has the right to regard themselves as part of the elite.

In texture, though, they are different. There was, of course, mutual antipathy between Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez, the managers of Chelsea and Liverpool at the height of their antagonism. At times, relations were frosty between their players, too: on England duty, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher formed a separate faction to John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

It was fractious between Arsenal and City in April 2023 (Michael Regan/Getty Images)

For the most part, though, it only manifested in outbursts of press conference sniping and the occasional sabotage of England’s forlorn attempts to win an international tournament. In that sense, the more apposite forerunner of Arsenal’s current conflict with Manchester City is the one that Arsene Wenger and his team enjoyed with Manchester United at the very start of this century.

There was, in that case, no simmering undercurrent: both Arsenal and United regard themselves, and would begrudgingly regard each other, as members of English football’s traditional triumvirate of powers.

The timbre of the feud, though, was the same. Their meetings were bad-tempered, fraught, freighted both with meaning and rancour. Relations not just between the clubs but the teams themselves were bitter, toxic. And, above all, things were petty. They traded barbs in public. They bristled in the tunnel, squabbled on the pitch, and threw pizza outside the dressing rooms. They shared, for a while, a mutual loathing too potent for anyone involved to conceal.

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

Manchester United, Arsenal and the ‘Battle of the Buffet’ – told by those who were there

More than 20 years later, the echoes are clear. Until relatively recently, it would have been possible to feel that Arsenal were doing an awful lot of the heavy lifting in terms of willing a rivalry with City into existence.

Pep Guardiola’s team had, naturally, come to play the role of a final boss in the thinking of Mikel Arteta and his players: City were, after all, the team they would have to overhaul if they were to win a first Premier League title since the height of their discord with Manchester United. City were the yardstick by which Arsenal judged themselves.

When Arsenal were beaten 3-1 by City at the Emirates in February 2023, Arteta used it as a learning moment, proof that there were certain errors his team could not afford to make “at this level”. A few months later, when City beat Arsenal 4-1 at the Etihad, he urged his players to be “humble” enough to accept the better team had won.

It was no wonder, then, that Arsenal treated their victory on penalties in the Community Shield that summer as a significant milestone. Aaron Ramsdale described it as “a statement, a marker. That mental block is gone,” he said. “We’re ready to push on now.”

Beating Guardiola’s team in the league in October 2023, Arsenal’s first win against City in the Premier League for eight years, felt even more important. “Everyone knows how hard it is to play against them,” said Gabriel Jesus, channelling his inner Independence Day-era Randy Quaid. “But it is not impossible to beat them.”

Just as significant, though, was the aftermath of that game. As the players left the field after Arsenal’s 1-0 win, the club’s set-piece coach Nicolas Jover, a former City employee, attempted to shake hands with Kyle Walker. Walker took exception, reportedly because he remembered that Jover had refused to shake hands with City’s players after Arsenal’s defeats earlier in the year. Erling Haaland became involved, too, prompting a mildly unseemly fracas. The rivalry, it turned out, did not only run one way. City might have got inside Arsenal’s heads. But Arsenal were in City’s, too.

Tempers frayed in October 2023 (Adrian Dennis/AFP/Getty Images)

In the year that followed, that became increasingly clear. Ordinarily, even those enmities that fans feel most keenly are not reflected between the executives of the clubs involved. Arsenal and Tottenham often find themselves allied in Premier League meetings. Relations between John Henry and Joel Glazer, principal owners of Liverpool and Manchester United, are not just cordial but positively friendly.

Arsenal have discovered, though, that rivalry with Manchester City is not so easily limited to the field; there is, instead, an element of total war. Relations between the two clubs have been strained for some time by their opposing views on the legitimacy of the Premier League’s financial controls, and may even have been broken beyond repair by the ongoing investigation into whether City breached them.

It is unusual, though, that so much of that tension should have become public knowledge. In August, for example, it emerged that Tim Lewis, Arsenal’s executive vice chairman, had not been present to witness Phil Foden being named as last year’s Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year. Lewis and his delegation had, in reality, simply had to leave the event in Manchester early to catch a train back to London. That did not stop it being presented as a deliberate provocation.

So, too, the fact that Lewis had not shaken hands with his City counterparts at the end of Arsenal’s 2-2 draw at the Etihad in September last year. It was, in the circumstances, perhaps a forgivable — or at least comprehensible — oversight. Tensions can run high, even in the corporate suites, in the heat of the moment. Such things are rarely noticed, let alone employed as kindling. This one was.

By that stage, of course, any hope of concealing the extent of the loathing between the two teams had long since disappeared. It was in that game that all of the acrimony was laid bare; the controversy it stirred started before the final whistle and rumbled on for most of the following week. Haaland celebrated John Stones’ late equaliser by throwing the ball at Gabriel’s head; the Norwegian, hardly a fiery character, greeted the end of the game by calling Gabriel Jesus a “clown” and urging Arteta to “stay humble”.

A few minutes later, when Stones not only criticised Arsenal’s cynical approach — “You can call it clever and dirty,” he said — but suggested they did not even deserve credit for excelling at the game’s dark arts. “I wouldn’t say they’ve mastered it,” he said, witheringly. “They’ve been doing it for a few years.”

That was enough to draw the two managers into the conflict. Unlike Benitez and Mourinho, or Alex Ferguson and Wenger, Guardiola and Arteta have made a point of staying above the fray; they are, after all, not just former colleagues but real-life friends. Arteta, though, was sufficiently riled to suggest that City were in no place to talk about the weaponisation of tactical fouls; Guardiola duly encouraged his former lieutenant to produce some receipts.

Arteta and Guardiola before September 2024’s match (Carl Recine/Getty Images)

The most pointed comments, though, came from Bernardo, rather quicker to offer a view on this occasion than when asked to suggest a training pitch in the south of France.

City’s rivalry with Arsenal, he said, was “different” to the one that preceded it with Liverpool. “Maybe because Liverpool have already won the Premier League,” he said. “Arsenal haven’t. Liverpool have won the Champions League. Arsenal haven’t. Liverpool always faced us, face to face, to try and win the games. From this perspective, the games against Arsenal haven’t been like the ones we had, and have, against Liverpool.” The subtext, here, is so obvious that it is not really subtext.

Of course, in the months that have followed, the context of those remarks has shifted. Hindsight makes it clear that this was a Manchester City already approaching their limit, running on fumes, desperate for reinforcements. It was a Manchester City, perhaps, desperate to preserve its aura for as long as possible, a Manchester City conscious that they might soon see Arsenal as something much closer to equals.

The team that Guardiola takes to the Emirates this weekend is not the team that has played such an outsize role in Arsenal’s imagination; it is, instead, a team caught between the end and a start, a shadow of what was and the initial outline of what is to come. It is a City, for the first time in years, that Arsenal should not need to fear.

That is not, though, how Arsenal will treat it. It might be Liverpool that Arteta’s team has to chase down if they are to win the Premier League title, if they are to prove that theirs is a journey with an inevitable destination, but it is still City — because it has always been City — that they must overcome.

“It’s a battle, it’s a war,” Gabriel said, just a few minutes after Haaland’s “act of provocation” in September. “Now this is over, and we are waiting for them.”

The Arsenal-Man City rivalry has always been one filled with tension, drama, and a deep-seated animosity between the two clubs. But in recent years, there has been a shifting of power that has only intensified the fear and loathing between the two sides.

For decades, Arsenal was the dominant force in English football, consistently challenging for titles and trophies while Manchester City languished in the lower divisions. But with the arrival of billionaire owner Sheikh Mansour in 2008, City underwent a dramatic transformation, quickly becoming one of the richest and most successful clubs in the world.

This newfound success has not only elevated City to the top of English football but has also sparked a fierce rivalry with Arsenal, a club that has seen its own fortunes decline in recent years. The fear of being overshadowed by City’s wealth and success has only fueled the loathing between the two clubs, with fans and players alike desperate to assert their dominance on the pitch.

As City continues to assert their dominance in the Premier League and Europe, Arsenal finds themselves in a constant battle to keep up, leading to tense and often heated encounters between the two sides. The power dynamic has shifted, and with it, the fear and loathing between Arsenal and Manchester City has only grown stronger.

But as both clubs continue to fight for supremacy, one thing is for certain – the Arsenal-Man City rivalry is as intense and passionate as ever, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

  • Sacramento Kings vs Oklahoma City Thunder Prediction, Odds and Picks

After an impressive run under new head coach Doug Christie, the Kings have cooled of a little with 3 losses in their last 4 games. They face a tough OKC Thunder team here, trying to avenge a 21-point loss suffered in late November. Since then a lot has happened, a new head coach has come in, plus star player De’Aaron Fox is being mentioned as a potential trade target for several teams as we get close to the trade deadline. That’s certainly not helped the team’s chemistry, which is visible by their last 3 losses in which they lost by an average of 15 points.

The Thunder are in a bit of a slump of their own having lost 2 of 3 games. For a team that’s lost back-to-back games just once this season, this is considered a poor stretch of play. Someone who definitely isn’t on a poor run of play is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The MVP candidate has been going to work lately, even more than he usually does. He’s dropped 50+ in 2 of his last 4 outings, increasing his point per game average to 35.6 points per game in January. I’m sure he would trade all those numbers for wins in the games against Dallas and Golden State though. The Thunder are firm favorites here, which is expected from a team that’s 20-4 SU at home this season.

Oddly enough this match-up has been a favorable one for Sacramento. Over the last 15 meetings they are 11-4 SU/ATS, plus in road games at Paycom Center they’ve covered in 11 of 16 visits. They’re just 1-3 SU during this current 6 game road trip, facing a team like the Thunder should bring out the best out of them. Sabonis will be a tough cover, we just saw him notch a triple-double in the loss to Philadelphia. I’ll give the Kings the benefit of the doubt here and back them to cover as road underdogs.

Kings vs Thunder Predictions: Kings +9 is available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.

The Sacramento Kings are set to take on the Oklahoma City Thunder in what promises to be an exciting matchup. Both teams are looking to secure a win and improve their standing in the Western Conference.

The Kings have been inconsistent this season, but they have shown flashes of potential with their young core of De’Aaron Fox, Tyrese Haliburton, and Buddy Hield. On the other hand, the Thunder have struggled with injuries and are currently in a rebuilding phase.

In terms of odds, the Kings are slight favorites with a -3.5 point spread. The over/under is set at 225.5 points.

As for picks, the Kings have the edge in this matchup with their scoring ability and depth. Look for Fox and Haliburton to lead the way for Sacramento, while Hield provides a spark off the bench. The Thunder will rely on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to carry the load, but it may not be enough to overcome the Kings’ firepower.

    Prediction: Sacramento Kings win

    Odds: Sacramento Kings -3.5

Picks: Sacramento Kings -3.5, Over 225.5 points

  • Cebu City farmers seek more machineries

AS CEBU City farmers anticipate the occurrence of drought, they are hoping for more assistance from City Hall, such as additional machineries to pump out water for farming.

While commending the City Agriculture Department (CAD) for its preparations for a possible El Niño phenomenon, Alliance of Cebu City Farmers Association head Casimero Pilones told SunStar Cebu on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, that farmers need water pumps.

Pilones said the efforts of the CAD are doing good for the farmers, but it would be best if the City add to their water containers since their current water drums are not enough.

Pilones, whose farm is located in the mountain barangay of Paril, said that while there are insufficient water containers and no water pumps yet, they only rely on the water irrigation system that sometimes cannot reach the upper areas.

He expressed fears that when the El Niño phenomenon hits, farmers will not be able to plant crops since the current water supply cannot support their farming.

In a previous SunStar report, Jhomer Eclarino, weather specialist from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas, said while the El Niño phenomenon only has a 30 percent chance of occurring this 2025, the probability may change.

    Water storage

CAD chief Arleigh Gesta said on Friday, Jan. 31, that they had started to distribute water drums and hoses to farmers in areas with water sources.

Farmers in upland barangays are also creating their own water impounding areas to collect runoff from creeks.

The CAD will also continue its programs, including crop production extension, livestock production, alternative marketing, nursery production, reforestation, institutional development, urban agriculture and food security initiatives.

The CAD is also updating farmer profiles to ensure that all registered farmers receive assistance.

Gesta said around 1,000 farmers have been added to the registry system for basic sectors in agriculture, bringing the total to 10,976 registered farmers.

He recalled that some unregistered farmers did not receive additional rice aid last year.

To avoid a repeat of the problem, the CAD is going from barangay to barangay to update records.

The CAD also launched an information campaign to guide farmers on suitable crops to plant.

Gesta advised them to avoid crops with long growing periods and plant those that can be harvested within 45 days to reduce costs.

    Effects

In 2024, the El Niño caused severe agricultural losses in Cebu City.

The drought affected 10,000 farmers, with 1,047 farmers suffering direct losses in April last year.

Water shortages forced the City Government to declare a water crisis on April 1.

While farmers struggled as less than 20 out of 44 irrigation facilities remained functional.

The Cebu City Government placed 28 hinterland villages under a state of calamity in March due to El Niño’s impact.

To mitigate losses, the CAD trained farmers on water conservation and identified new water sources for irrigation last year. The agency also provided emergency food assistance, including rice and groceries.

Despite these efforts, some farmers criticized the delayed response from the government.

They called for better coordination and faster aid distribution.

Also in April last year, Councilor Pastor Alcover Jr. accused then CAD chief Joselito Baclayon of failing to come up with plans to address the plight of farmers.

Nationwide, the El Niño phenomenon, which started on July 4, 2023, was one of the strongest on record.

Pagasa said it was the fifth-most powerful globally and caused P2.63 billion in agricultural losses. The main crops affected were rice and corn, leading to food insecurity.

The weather bureau declared the end of the El Niño phenomenon on June 7, 2024. (JPS, CDF)

In Cebu City, farmers are facing challenges in meeting the demands of their growing agricultural industry. With limited access to modern machinery and equipment, many farmers are struggling to keep up with the competition.

In a recent survey conducted by the Cebu City Farmers Association, it was found that the majority of farmers expressed a need for more machineries to improve their productivity and efficiency. From tractors to harvesters, farmers are looking for ways to mechanize their operations and increase their yield.

One farmer, Juan dela Cruz, shared his frustrations about the lack of machinery available to him. “I have been farming for years, but without proper equipment, I am unable to maximize my output. It’s time for the government to support us by providing us with the tools we need to succeed,” he said.

The Cebu City Farmers Association is now calling on the local government to invest in more machineries for the agricultural sector. They believe that by providing farmers with the necessary equipment, they can help boost the city’s economy and ensure food security for its residents.

As the demand for agricultural products continues to rise, it is crucial for farmers in Cebu City to have access to modern machinery to meet these demands. By investing in machineries, the city can support its farmers and help them thrive in today’s competitive market.
