  • Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly to stay despite Chelsea transfer interest

Nico O’Reilly is to stay at Manchester City despite strong interest from Chelsea in a deadline day transfer.

City rate the 19-year-old midfielder extremely highly and would have demanded a buy-back clause if they were to sell.

Such a condition would not have been accepted by Chelsea and therefore after an enquiry and talks, the situation is not going to develop in this window.

It means City will retain one of their best young players and avoid a repeat of the Cole Palmer situation, which saw the England international leave for Stamford Bridge in 2023.

O’Reilly is a product of City’s academy and made his senior league debut earlier this season in the 6-0 win over Ipswich Town last month.

He has made six senior appearances in total this season including starting the Community Shield win over Manchester United back in August.

Pep Guardiola has talked up O’Reilly’s talent and his ability to play in a multitude of roles.

“I am pretty sure he can help us,” Guardiola said during City’s pre-season tour of the United States.

“He can play with us, even as a holding midfielder when Rodri is not there. We have Kalvin Phillips. I don’t know what is going to happen, but we have Kova (Mateo Kovacic), and we have Nico. I know he can play it.”

‘He will be a player’: Nico O’Reilly is latest Man City academy star to impress Pep Guardiola

    (Alex Pantling/Getty Images)

Manchester City’s young star Nico O’Reilly has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea, but the talented midfielder has no plans to leave the Etihad Stadium anytime soon.

O’Reilly, who has impressed with his performances for City’s youth teams, is seen as a bright prospect for the future. The 19-year-old has been on Chelsea’s radar for some time now, with the Blues keen to add him to their squad.

However, O’Reilly is committed to City and has no intention of moving to Stamford Bridge. The midfielder is eager to continue his development with the reigning Premier League champions and is determined to make a name for himself at the club.

City’s coaching staff have been impressed with O’Reilly’s attitude and work ethic, and believe he has the potential to become a key player for the first team in the coming years.

While Chelsea’s interest is flattering, O’Reilly is focused on his career at City and is determined to prove himself at the highest level. Fans can expect to see more of the talented midfielder in the coming seasons as he continues to progress and make his mark on the Premier League.

  • Champions League: Fire extinguished outside Man City’s stadium

A fire on the perimeter of Etihad Stadium was extinguished on Wednesday as fans arrived for Manchester City‘s decisive Champions League clash against Club Brugge.

The fire broke out near the entrance to the Colin Bell West Stand when City were unveiling their new January signings nearby.

City confimed the fire would not delay kick-off.

“Emergency services are present at the scene and the fire has now been extinguished,” City said in a statement.

“The safety of all attending the match tonight is our top priority, and as such all events planned for West Stand reception have been cancelled, including the welcome event for new players, and the first team arrival.”

No casualties were immediately reported to police.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service told ESPN in a statement: “Just before 6pm this evening, two fire engines from Blackley and Philips Park fire station were called to reports of a building fire involving an outbuilding on the car park of the football ground on Rowsley Street, Manchester.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the fire, they are currently dampening down any hotspots and making the area safe.

“Firefighters have been in attendance for around thirty minutes and are still at the scene.”

City, who are 25th in the Champions League table ahead of the final group fixture, must beat Brugge to make the knockout playoffs.

Information from Reuters and ESPN’s Rob Dawson contributed to this report.

In a bizarre turn of events, a fire extinguisher was found outside Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium ahead of their Champions League match. The small fire was quickly extinguished by the authorities, but the incident left fans puzzled and concerned.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but it did not affect the stadium or the match in any way. Manchester City went on to win the game against their opponents, further solidifying their position in the Champions League.

While the fire extinguisher incident may have been a strange occurrence, it ultimately did not impact the outcome of the match. Manchester City continues to shine in the Champions League, proving themselves as strong contenders for the title.

  • Wildfires spared Olympic venues in L.A., but the city’s rebuild could impact runup to 2028 Olympic Games

The devastation wrought by the deadly wildfires that ravaged sections of Los Angeles has left an indelible imprint on the region’s landscape and psyche.

The runup to the city hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, in addition to World Cup matches in 2026 and a Super Bowl in ’27, will coincide with massive rebuilding of housing and infrastructure. That seems cruelly ironic after Los Angeles organizers sold the Games as a no-build event.

None of the Olympic venues have been damaged by the still-burning fires that tore through Pacific Palisades on the city’s westside and Altadena, an unincorporated community above Pasadena in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

The Palisades fire came close to Riviera Country Club, which will host Olympic golf and was inside the evacuation zone. UCLA, which will house athletes, was just outside the zone.

“While our focus remains on healing and rebuilding, there is no reason to believe that the fires will adversely impact or delay preparations for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which are already well underway,” Paul Kerkorian, executive director of the city’s new Office of Major Events, said in a statement.

The NFL, NBA and college basketball relocated or postponed games in the days after the fires began on Jan. 7.

Neither of the two major fires has been contained and thousands remain evacuated.

“We are in full solidarity with the citizens of Los Angeles and full of admiration for the tireless work of the firefighters and the security forces,” the International Olympic Committee said in a statement. “Currently the full focus must be on the fight against the fires and the protection of the people and property.”

How Los Angeles was awarded the 2028 Olympic Games

Los Angeles was awarded the 2028 Olympics for a third time in 2017, with the IOC praising organizers’ bid for using existing and temporary venues rather than constructing new stadiums and sports facilities specifically for the Games, as well as its commitment to sustainability and fiscal responsibility.

Yet the Games were still expected to cost roughly $6.9 billion for investments like upgraded transportation, revamped facilities and improvements to the city’s infrastructure with a goal of benefitting residents long after the Olympic flame is extinguished. Three major projects involve renovating the city’s airport and expanding the Metro transportation system and downtown convention center.

No one counted on a large-scale disaster occurring in the nation’s second-largest city when those projects were approved.

“What’s happened in a number of recent Olympics is something else comes along that entirely changes what the Games are all about,” said Dr. Matthew Brown, a University of Utah political science professor who has written extensively about the Olympics.

Tokyo postponed the 2020 Summer Games until 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and then held them without fans in attendance. Beijing went ahead with the 2022 Winter Games under strict pandemic restrictions with limited spectators allowed.

“Something like wildfires can really change the priorities of lots of cities in that region and potentially the state and federal government and what they fund and when they want to fund it,” Brown said.

LA28 president and chairman Casey Wasserman met with President-elect Donald Trump in Florida on Wednesday night to shore up backing.

“As a lifelong Angeleno, I shared our sentiments for President-elect Trump’s continued support in Los Angeles amid the devastation in our region,” Wasserman said in a statement.

Trump, a major sports fan, was serving his first term when Los Angeles won the Games.

“We also addressed the 2028 Games, and we are grateful for his unwavering commitment to LA28 and his leadership in bringing the Summer Games back to the United States for the first time in more than 30 years. We look forward to partnering with him and his administration to deliver a safe and successful Games our nation can be proud of,” Wasserman said.

The strain on resources in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is not immune to disasters — real or imagined. Wildfires, earthquakes, mudslides, flooding, drought and rioting have left their marks on the nation’s most populous county of nearly 10 million people. And on the screen, Hollywood has dreamed up mass destruction.

The ongoing wildfires have killed over 20 people, destroyed over 12,000 structures and fouled the sprawling region’s air quality, which affects public health.

“The reality is what this is going to do is put a big strain on availability of resources from the city of LA, surrounding cities and the state of California,” Brown said.

“What happens then is those resources have to come from somewhere and that means other things are not going to have resources.”

Brown points out that while the Olympics are primarily funded through the local organizing committee, Games held in the U.S. depend heavily on state and local governments for police, fire, first responders and traffic control.

“Those are all local resources,” he said. “They’re not going to be controlled by the local organizing committee.”

It’s unclear how the recovery could impact LA’s notorious traffic congestion. Mayor Karen Bass has promised a “car free” Olympics, but no detailed transportation plans have been announced for the Games, which are expected to attract thousands of people daily.

The region’s ability to recover will be tested as it prepares to host the World Cup, Super Bowl and the 17-day Olympics followed by the Paralympics in a span of three years.

“We have seen a tremendous response to this devastating tragedy by our partners at every level of government, working in unity,” Kerkorian said. “With that continuing spirit of cooperation, we have no doubt that Los Angeles will be ready to welcome the world next year for the FIFA World Cup and in 2028 for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Given its proximity to Hollywood, few would be surprised to see the city create a comeback story worthy of the big screen.

“The advantage LA has is there’s always another place to do whatever it is you wanted to do,” Brown said. “That gives it something other cities couldn’t pull off.”

The recent wildfires in Los Angeles spared the city’s Olympic venues, providing a sigh of relief for organizers and athletes. However, the aftermath of the fires and the city’s rebuild efforts could potentially impact the preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games.

While the venues themselves were not directly affected by the fires, the destruction caused by the wildfires has left a significant impact on the surrounding areas. The cleanup and rebuilding process will require resources and attention, potentially diverting focus and resources away from the preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Additionally, the impact of the wildfires on local communities and infrastructure could also have implications for transportation, accommodations, and overall logistics for the 2028 Olympics. The city will need to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place to accommodate the influx of athletes, officials, and spectators for the games.

Despite these challenges, Los Angeles remains committed to hosting a successful and memorable Olympic Games in 2028. The city has a track record of successfully hosting major events, and with proper planning and coordination, it is possible to overcome the obstacles posed by the recent wildfires.

As the city works towards rebuilding and recovery, it is crucial for stakeholders to collaborate and prioritize the preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games. By working together and staying focused on the long-term goal, Los Angeles can ensure that the impact of the wildfires does not hinder the success of the upcoming Olympics.

  • As he leaves city’s top job, Gary Suiter says Steamboat Springs is losing its soul

As he transitions from City Manager to private citizen, Suiter said the “infusion of great wealth” is threatening the culture and heritage of Ski Town, USA.

City Manager Gary Suiter ends his nine-year run in Steamboat’s top job on Friday. (Shannon Lukens/Courtesy)

As a city manager, Gary Suiter said he has always been counting votes. At 5-2, you’ve lost support from two council members — “A little tenuous,” he said. By 4-3, you need to be updating your resume.

That’s exactly what happened the last time Suiter was a permanent city manager in Snowmass Village. That council had gotten into bed with a developer to build out a new base area and needed someone to do the deal on their terms. The political winds had shifted. In the words of the Aspen Daily News in 2001, the council accepted his “forced resignation.”

In his words, Suiter was “fired over politics.”

“They didn’t want to hear about the master plan and our land use codes and all that stuff,” Suiter recalled. “I got fired over politics, that’s fine. That’s the risk that comes with these jobs.”

The Snowmass project was eventually pushed through without Suiter at the helm. After being built out a third of the way, the 2008 recession halted construction and the project sat untouched for much of the next two decades. In his professional opinion, “It was a pretty big mistake on their part.”

After his departure in Snowmass, Suiter said he wanted to take control of his own career and not subject his family to the politics of a ski town. He started a consulting business to help coach other city managers and ended up serving on an interim basis in a dozen different communities over 14 years.

He had his eye on the community for decades, dating back to a tour to Ski Town, USA when he was still in Snowmass.

“It met all my criteria of having solid leadership at council, solid staff to work with,” Suiter said. “And, it’s a real town.”

Suiter ends his nine-year run with the city on Friday. At a retirement party hosted at Olympian Hall at Howelsen Hill on Thursday evening, he said it was the first time he was leaving such a job without being pushed out. City Council members presented him with a key to the city.

Suiter said he plans to spend his last day visiting city staff at various outposts across town.

In an interview with The Yampa Valley Bugle on Thursday afternoon from his week-old office in Steamboat’s shiny new city hall building, Suiter said he was ready to leave the city on his own terms. He has no plans to leave town.

As he transitions from city manager to private citizen, Suiter said he is worried that the culture and heritage of Steamboat has changed and continues to change.

“When you just walk around main street and you look at the people walking around, and how they are dressed and how they act… there’s a certain authenticity, a down-hominess to this place,” Suiter said. “I’m concerned about losing that over the years with the infusion of great wealth and becoming more and more exclusive.”

“I’ve seen it happen in other resort communities. I’ve seen businesses that have closed down, walked away and said, ‘this place has lost its soul,’” Suiter continued. “I’m concerned about Steamboat losing its soul and we need to do everything we can to fight to preserve that through the built environment and through the people environment.”

“We need workers here. That’s what keeps some of the funkiness and the authenticity is keeping a middle class,” Suiter said. “If we lose [the] middle class, we’re going to have an elite class and a worker’s class that are imported from elsewhere. And I’ve seen that happen in other really exclusive resort communities.”

Suiter says he watched it happen in Snowmass. When he started in the village, people would come in and work together to solve problems. He would talk to someone’s lawyer once a year at most. By the time he was forced out, he met with various lawyers nearly every week.

“A lot of people moved in. They didn’t come in and talk. They just sent their lawyers to come in and talk,” Suiter said. “It was a remarkable change. It was kind of disappointing to lose that funkiness, that authenticity from a young ski resort.”

When asked if he believes Steamboat Springs is headed down a similar path, Suiter nodded his head yes.

“I think there’s more outside investment… you’re seeing the higher-end stores come in now,” Suiter said. “That concerns me. How do you stop that? How do you stop an international investor from coming in and buying a whole block of downtown?”

Suiter recalled his time in Telluride, where there was once a line item in the budget aimed at keeping the local Ace Hardware store downtown. He said Steamboat may need to take similar steps, potentially devoting tax revenue to subsidize local businesses so they are not lost. The city’s new program recognizing legacy businesses is a start, he said.

It’s also about keeping workers in town, which is why Brown Ranch is so important to the future, Suiter said. He believes the next plan needs to be a phased annexation, with maybe a fifth or a quarter of the project being approved at a time, something he believes would be an easier pill to swallow for a community that soundly rejected a plan for more than 2,200 units last spring.

“I see the beginnings of it,” Suiter said, referring to Steamboat losing what he sees as the soul of the community. “It’s not already gone.”

As he leaves city’s top job, Gary Suiter says Steamboat Springs is losing its soul

After serving as the city manager of Steamboat Springs for over five years, Gary Suiter is stepping down from his position. In a candid interview, Suiter expressed his concerns about the direction the city is heading in, stating that Steamboat Springs is losing its soul.

Suiter, who has been a longtime resident of Steamboat Springs, believes that the city is becoming increasingly focused on growth and development, at the expense of its unique character and charm. He lamented the loss of small businesses and local culture, as well as the rapid influx of chain stores and corporate entities.

Despite his concerns, Suiter remains hopeful that the city can find a balance between progress and preservation. He encouraged residents to get involved in local government and advocate for policies that prioritize the community’s well-being over profit.

As Suiter bids farewell to his role as city manager, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication and passion for Steamboat Springs. His parting words serve as a reminder to cherish the city’s soul and preserve its essence for future generations.

  • Gasparilla 2025: Pirates ‘warn’ of impending invasion after Tampa mayor refuses to surrender the city’s keys

Cold, rainy weather was no match for pirates with Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, who headed into Tampa at high noon on Tuesday to warn of an invasion.

In a time-honored tradition, the pirates infiltrated Tampa and set sights on Tampa Mayor Jane Castor.

    Gasparilla

    The backstory:

Gasparilla has been a part of the Tampa community since 1904.

Before pirates take over the city, they meet with the mayor to “negotiate” a peaceful surrender of the city.

Ye Mystic Krewe stated that Captain Drew Pittman commanded that Mayor Jane Castor meet with him at high noon on Tuesday in downtown Tampa.

READ: Gasparilla 2025: Here’s what to know about the annual pirate parade

In true Gasparilla fashion, the sound of cannons were heard in downtown Tampa before the pirates met with Mayor Castor to “discuss” the advantages of her handing over the keys to the city.

They added that Mayor Castor needed to surrender now or face the historic Gasparilla Invasion.

Mayor Castor did not surrender the key to the city on Tuesday.

She said, “If Hurricanes Helene and Milton couldn’t knock down Tampa, new scaly wags can’t.”

Gasparilla pirates did not get key to the city

    What they’re saying:

“But when you try to explain Gasparilla festivities to people from out of town, they just kind of tilt their heads to one side and look at you funny,” said Castor. “You just have to come and experience it.” ‘

Pirate Shamus Warren expected the mayor’s hard line on the key, but his smile remained.

“We pay her the courtesy of asking politely for the key,” said Warren. “Traditionally, she refuses, and we have to bring our buddies back on Saturday and the result is a great parade and a great day.”

    The backstory:

In FOX 13’s archives from 1974, we found the pirate raid on then-Tampa Mayor Dick Greco. On the roof of City Hall, he tried to offer Tampa Cigars to win favor, but later in his office he revealed the truth about who should run Tampa.

“You pirates would do a better job than us politicians,” Greco said at the time.

    What’s next:

Since Castor did not hand over the keys, the pirates took the mayor and said they will respectfully deliver her to the appointed meeting place, reported to be Lykes Gaslight Park on Franklin Street, between Kennedy and Madison.

The Jose Gasparilla ship is expected to dock outside the Tampa Convention Center at 1 p.m. After the mayor surrenders the key to the city around 1:15 p.m., the pirates will take to the streets to celebrate.

The Gasparilla Parade of the Pirates will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Bay to Bay and Bayshore.

Gasparilla 2025: Pirates ‘warn’ of impending invasion after Tampa mayor refuses to surrender the city’s keys

The annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival in Tampa, Florida is known for its rowdy parades, extravagant costumes, and swashbuckling antics. But this year, things took a serious turn when the city’s mayor, Jane Castor, refused to hand over the keys to the city to the invading pirate crew.

In a bold move, the pirates issued a warning to the city of Tampa, declaring that they would invade the city and take what was rightfully theirs. The mayor’s refusal to surrender the keys has sparked outrage among the pirate community, with many vowing to storm the city and claim their treasure by force.

Despite calls for calm and negotiations from city officials, the pirates have remained steadfast in their determination to conquer Tampa. Rumors swirl of a massive armada of pirate ships gathering on the horizon, ready to make landfall and plunder the city.

As tensions rise and the city braces for a potential invasion, residents and tourists are torn between fear and excitement. Will the pirates succeed in their quest for domination, or will the city of Tampa be able to hold them off and protect its treasures?

Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain: Gasparilla 2025 is shaping up to be a festival like no other. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Snowstorm ices 3-day planning huddle in Beaufort set to address city’s hot-button issues

A winter storm that’s expected to bring bone-chilling temperatures and possibly snow to the Lowcountry has postponed a three-day planning retreat in Beaufort.

The city’s five elected council members and City Manager Scott Marshall and his staff had been scheduled to tackle some of the toughest issues facing the city of 14,000 on the Beaufort River from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at the Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce, 711 Bladen St.

The retreat is held annually to set planning, building and spending priorities, Mayor Phil Cromer said. The sessions help the city come up with a game plan for the coming year, he said, and marching orders for city staff.

“I hope it’s a very open, robust free-flowing of ideas,” Cromer said.

But Marshall said later on Friday afternoon that the city had decided to postpone the retreat because of a looming storm.

The National Weather Service said Friday the storm will bring extreme cold to the region on Tuesday and Wednesday with lows in the lower 20s. Windchill values as low as 15 degrees are possible Wednesday, the Weather Service said.

While the chance of snow Tuesday night was listed at 70%, the amount of freezing precipitation the area may receive still was uncertain as of Friday afternoon.

A new date, time, and location for the retreat will be determined and communicated as soon as possible, the city said.

Prior to the decision to postpone the retreat, Cromer noted that the predicted snow and sleet might make transportation to the retreat meetings difficult for some — “even for me” — because South Carolina drivers don’t encounter ice- and snow-covered roads very often.

During the retreat — whenever it occurs — current and emerging capital needs across the growing city known for its historic neighborhoods will be a major discussion topic, including stormwater drainage systems, which are a continual challenge for a city susceptible to storms and flooding.

One goal of the retreat will be coming up with a list of priorities for capital projects, Cromer said.

One high-interest issue with the general public that will likely be discussed as well is the future of Waterfront Park, Cromer said.

Last April, the city learned that the concrete pilings that support the park and the seawall are in tough shape. Repairs or even replacement of that infrastructure, which lies below the water line, are necessary with the cost expected to be in the millions.

“I think on most people’s minds is, where are we headed with Waterfront Park?” Cromer said. “That’s a biggie.”

The City Council also will discuss revisions to the development code; hear from department heads and partners such as Dominion Energy and the Historic Beaufort Foundation; and issues that are important to individual council members.

Time will be set aside for public comment at the close of each day’s meeting, which also will be livestreamed on the city’s Facebook page.

The retreat will be facilitated by Bill Stipp, a Phoenix-area-based public sector consultant who specializes in strategic planning.

You can find the full agenda at cityofbeaufort.org.

Residents of Beaufort, brace yourselves for a snowstorm that is about to put a freeze on the city’s 3-day planning huddle. The anticipated storm has forced city officials to rethink their strategy and prioritize safety above all else.

The planning huddle, which was set to address Beaufort’s hot-button issues, such as housing affordability, transportation, and environmental sustainability, will now be postponed until further notice. The city’s top priority is to ensure the safety of its residents and employees during the impending snowstorm.

Despite the setback, city officials are determined to reschedule the planning huddle as soon as possible and continue their work on addressing the pressing issues facing Beaufort. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the storm.

Stay tuned for more updates on the rescheduled planning huddle and how Beaufort plans to tackle its hot-button issues in the coming days. Stay safe, Beaufort! #BeaufortSnowstorm #PlanningHuddle #SafetyFirst.

  • One of Manchester City’s most talented players is getting back to his best

One of Manchester City’s most talented players is getting back to his best

One of Manchester City’s most talented players is getting back to his best

This season saw one of Manchester City’s most talented players make a slow start to the 24/25 season. Phil Foden was well below his best for the majority of the first half of the season. A busy summer with England at the European Championships had taken a toll on Foden. He then battled illness and fitness issues which saw him not reach the heights we have become accustomed to seeing from Foden.

But recently one of Manchester City’s most important players has begun to look like himself. That’s good news for the world champions as they look to claim a top-four finish this season. Foden scored a brace against Brentford at the GTech Community Stadium earlier this week. On top of that the energy and buzz we are used to seeing from Foden looks to have returned. The hope is now that Foden can continue his promising recent signs over the second half of this season.

Speaking during his pre-game press conference ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Ipswich Town Pep Guardiola was asked about how Phil Foden has been travelling lately. Guardiola’s update was good news for Manchester City. Guardiola explained: “It’s not bad what he is doing lately. His mood when he smiles and he arrives and talks and whatever, we have to be calm. And in the first part of the year was a little bit more concerned, some niggles, some concerns about his condition, a little bit more down. Still, he’s a young player but already has experience in many things in many years. And sometimes you need to breathe, to come back and in this mood that has happened in the last three weeks, one month, his natural talent will do the rest.

Manchester City need Phil Foden fit and firing over the second half of this season. At his best he is one of the best players in the Premier League. He does look to have turned a corner in regards to his form in recent weeks. After Pep Guardiola’s update today the hope is that Foden is now back to his best and can aid his team’s cause for the challenges that lie ahead this season.

Manchester City fans have been eagerly awaiting the return to form of one of their most talented players, and it looks like their patience is finally paying off. After a period of inconsistency and injury setbacks, this player is starting to show the world why he is considered one of the best in the game.

With his blistering pace, impeccable dribbling skills, and eye for goal, it’s no wonder why fans and pundits alike have been singing his praises. His recent performances on the pitch have been nothing short of sensational, and he is once again proving to be a key player in City’s pursuit of silverware.

It’s been a long road back to top form for this player, but his hard work and determination are finally paying off. City fans can rest easy knowing that one of their most talented players is getting back to his best, and there’s no telling what he can achieve in the future.

So, watch out Premier League, because this player is back and better than ever. Manchester City’s opponents better be prepared for a player on a mission to dominate the game once again.

  • Texans vs. Chiefs score, live updates: Kansas City’s road to a 3-peat opens vs. Houston in divisional round

Inevitable is a word that’s been thrown around about the Kansas City Chiefs throughout this season, as they try to march toward a historic third straight Super Bowl title. They opened 13-0, and their only two losses in the regular season were at Buffalo and at Denver in Week 18 with the No. 1 seed locked up and the starters on the bench.

They’ve won every way imaginable this season, and while good teams make their own luck, that has some thinking Kansas City might be vulnerable. While playing up — or sometimes apparently down — to its competition isn’t in question, the rust vs. rest argument may come into play. The Chiefs haven’t played a meaningful game in the standings since Christmas Day — a 24-day layoff for the Chiefs’ top players.

The Texans and Chiefs met in Week 16, on the Saturday before Christmas, a 27-19 K.C. win.

The Texans were last seen making short work of the Los Angeles Chargers, 32-12 in the wild-card round. Joe Mixon rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown, and C.J. Stroud threw for 282 yards and a score. He and head coach DeMeco Ryans became just the third quarterback-head coach combo — along with Mark Sanchez and Rex Ryan (Jets), and Joe Flacco and John Harbaugh (Ravens) — to win playoff games in their first two NFL seasons together. A Texans upset would mean the first AFC championship game appearance in franchise history.

Partly cloudy skies and cold temperatures are expected for Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, with kickoff temps expected around 20 degrees and potentially dropping into the teens as the sun goes down.

    Live15 updates

    • C.J. Stroud limping

C.J. Stroud limped off the field after being tackled by George Karlaftis, perhaps with an ankle injury. He’s getting checked out on the sideline, but appears to be all right.

    • Field goal: Texans 3, Chiefs 3

After a 13-yard pass from C.J. Stroud to Nico Collins gave Houston a 1st-and-10 at the Chiefs’ 14-yard line, the Texans’ drive stalled.

Joe Mixon ran for no gain, followed by an incomplete pass from Stroud and a two-yard scramble.

Ka’imi Fairbairn ties the game with a 30-yard field goal.

    • Chiefs’ Trent McDuffie to the medical tent

Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie was shaken up while tackling Joe Mixon on 2nd-and-5. He came out of the game and went to the blue medical tent to get checked out.

However, McDuffie is now back in the game after missing five plays.

    • Stroud to Schultz for 34 yards

Houston gets an explosive play on its opening drive with C.J. Stroud hitting Dalton Schultz for a 34-yard pass. That moves the Texans to the Kansas City 35-yard line.

    • Field goal: Chiefs 3, Texans 0

The Texans’ defense holds after that big kickoff return by the Chiefs. Isiah Pacheco loses a yard on his first carry, then Patrick Mahomes throws two incomplete passes.

Kansas City has to settle for a field goal and Harrison Butker kicks a 32-yarder for a 3–0 lead.

    • Eventful opening kickoff

Houston won the coin toss and will defer to the second half. So the Chiefs’ offense will take the field first.

Nikko Remigio returned the kickoff 63 yards for Kansas City, but fumbled while being tackled by Kris Boyd. Samaje Perine recovered for the Chiefs.

Boyd was then flagged 15 yards for taking of his helmet, giving the Chiefs the ball at Houston’s 13-yard line. He followed that blunder up with a shove of special teams coach Frank Ross. What a start, Houston.

    • National anthem hitting Chris Jones in the emotions

Lanell Lightfoot’s rendition of the national anthem before kickoff got Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones feeling his emotions.

    • Will Mahomes be rusty?

A big storyline early on will be whether or not Patrick Mahomes is rusty after a long layoff — 23 days, to be exact.

    • Chiefs defeated Texans in Week 16

The Chiefs and Texans played during the regular season in Week 16 and Kansas City won, 27–19.

Patrick Mahomes passed for 260 yards and one touchdown, completing 28-of-41 passes. Xavier Worthy caught seven passes for 65 yards and a score. Kareem Hunt had 11 carries for 55 yards and a TD. Mahomes also ran for a TD.

For Houston, C.J. Stroud completed 23-of-39 passes for 244 yards, two TDs and two interceptions. Tank Dell notched six receptions for 98 yards and a TD. Joe Mixon rushed for 57 yards on 14 carries.

    • Joe Mixon good to go for Texans

    • Inactives for Chiefs-Texans

    • Taylor’s in the house for Texans-Chiefs

  • State sales tax increase will put Bossier City’s tax rate at an even 10%

State sales tax increase will put Bossier City’s tax rate at an even 10%

KSLA) — It soon will be easier to figure the sales tax off the top of your head while shopping in Bossier City.

A 0.55% increase in the state sales tax goes into effect Wednesday (Jan. 1) in Louisiana.

That means the total sales tax in Bossier City, which now stands at 9.45%, will rise to an even 10%.

Late this year, Louisiana legislators approved the state sales tax increase as part of Gov. Jeff Landry’s tax overhaul, which will erase Louisiana’s budget deficit that was expected to be just shy of $600 million and threatened funding for health care services and higher education.

Landry’s tax plan, which was passed by the Louisiana Legislature in November, cuts individual income and corporate taxes by $1.2 billion in the next fiscal year, according to the latest revenue projections.

But that reduction is offset by a boost of $1.3 billion in sales tax collections, largely thanks to an increase in the state’s general sales tax rate from 4.45% to 5% until 2029.

As of January 1, 2022, Bossier City residents will see an increase in their state sales tax rate, bringing it to an even 10%. This increase is due to a statewide sales tax hike that was recently implemented by the Louisiana State Legislature.

While the additional revenue generated from this tax increase will undoubtedly benefit the state as a whole, many Bossier City residents are concerned about the impact it will have on their wallets. With a sales tax rate of 10%, consumers will now have to pay an additional 1% on most goods and services purchased within the city limits.

Local businesses are also feeling the effects of this tax increase, as they may see a decrease in sales as customers look for ways to save money. Some businesses may even be forced to raise their prices to offset the higher tax rate, further burdening consumers.

It remains to be seen how this sales tax increase will ultimately affect the economy of Bossier City. In the meantime, residents are advised to budget accordingly and be mindful of their spending habits in order to adapt to the higher tax rate.
