    The Kremlin said Monday that U.S.-Russia relations were on the brink of collapse and refused to confirm whether Russian President Vladimir Putin had spoken with President Donald Trump, despite Trump saying so Sunday.

    Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told a media conference Monday that relations with Washington “are balancing on the brink of a breakup” and reiterated that the war in Ukraine would last until Kyiv drops its ambitions to join NATO and withdraws from the four regions occupied by Russian forces.

    In remarks suggesting Moscow is maintaining its tough negotiating stance, Ryabkov said that “we simply imperatively need to get … the new U.S. administration to understand and acknowledge that without resolving the problems that are the root causes of the crisis in Ukraine, it will not be possible to reach an agreement.”

    Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the same day that he would “neither confirm nor deny” Trump’s comments to reporters on Air Force One on Sunday that he and Putin had spoken in his first officially acknowledged contact with the Russian leader since 2022.

    Referring to his contact with the Russian leader, Trump told reporters, “let’s just say I’ve had it … and I expect to have many more conversations. We have to get that war ended.”

    “I hate to see all these young people being killed. The soldiers are being killed by the hundreds of thousands,” he said, but declined to provide any more details about how many times the two had spoken, responding, “I’d better not say.”

    The remarks from Trump and spokespeople for the Kremlin come at a crucial juncture for the war in Ukraine, with Kyiv and its European neighbors nervously awaiting details of Trump’s peace plan to end the conflict that Russia launched with its full-scale invasion three years ago.

    Between winning election in November and being inaugurated last month, Trump said he planned to end the war in a single day upon taking office.

    Referring to Trump’s remarks Sunday, Keir Giles, a senior fellow of the Russia and Eurasia Program at the London think-tank Chatham House, said “it would be tempting to think that this was all part of a careful plan for not releasing information too early in order not to bridge this process.”

    “Or it could simply be that, as seems to be the case with Trump’s earlier promises of immediate action to bring the conflict to an end, that there isn’t, in fact, a plan yet,” he told NBC News.

    Giles added that more clarity on the situation may come later this week, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy due to attend the high-profile Munich Security Conference, which senior U.S. officials are also attending.

    Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, told NBC News’ Meet the Press” on Sunday that the U.S. officials would be “talking through the details of how to end this war and that will mean getting both sides to the table.”

    He added that Trump would be “prepared to tax, to tariff, to sanction” Moscow to get Putin to the negotiating table, while also stripping back assistance to Ukraine to force European allies to ramp up support to Ukraine.

    Ryabkov’s comments today came after Zelenskyy told the British broadcaster ITV last week that he was ready to hold talks with Russia as long as “I had an understanding that America and Europe will not abandon us and they will support us and provide security guarantees.”

    The Ukrainian leader also told Reuters on Sunday that it was important he meets Trump before any negotiations with Putin, “otherwise, it will look like a dialogue about Ukraine without Ukraine.”

    A Russian drone attack on Kyiv late Sunday injured a woman and damaged several houses in the northeastern city of Sumy, Ukrainian officials said Monday.

  • New York Islanders claim defenceman Adam Boqvist off waivers from Florida Panthers


    The New York Islanders claimed defenceman Adam Boqvist off waivers from the Florida Panthers on Friday. 

    The 24-year-old has two goals and four points in 18 games this season while averaging 12:51 of ice time. He has not played an NHL game since Jan. 6. 

    Drafted eighth overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2018, Boqvist was dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets in July of 2021, where he would play five seasons before signing with the Panthers in the off-season on a one-year, $775,000 deal.

     

    Isles continue to add on defence

    With the Boqvist claim, this is New York’s third notable move to address their blueline in the past week. 

    On Jan. 24, the team signed Tony DeAngelo for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. The 29-year-old hasn’t played in the NHL this season, but had six goals with 26 assists in 34 games with the KHL’s St. Petersburg SKA.

    DeAngelo appeared in 31 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season, recording three goals and eight assists. He added two assists in nine playoff games. 

    On Monday, the Islanders acquired Scott Perunovich from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a 2026 conditional fifth-round pick. 

    The 26-year-old had two goals and six points in 24 games with the Blues this season while averaging 14:37 of ice time.

    The 5-foot-10 left-shot defenceman signed a one-year, $1.15 million with the Blues in the off-season and is a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

    Jan. 31: The Islanders claimed Boqvist off waivers from the Panthers on Friday, per Friedman. He’s the third puck-moving blue-liner they’ve added in the past few weeks, joining UFA pickup Tony DeAngelo and trade acquisition Scott Perunovich. He’ll add some needed depth to the team’s blue line as they deal with the long-term absences of Noah DobsonRyan Pulock, and Mike Reilly. They’ll need to open up a roster spot as Boqvist’s acquisition puts them over the 23-player limit.

    Jan. 30: The Panthers placed defenseman Adam Boqvist on waivers Thursday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports. He will presumably be assigned to AHL Charlotte if he clears.

    Boqvist, 24, has not played since Jan. 6 and was healthy scratched for an 11th straight game in Wednesday’s shutout win over the Kings. The 5’11” righty played in nine of Florida’s first 10 games of the season but has been a press box fixture since then, only suiting up 18 times among the Panthers’ 52-game slate thus far.

    Once one of the league’s more highly-touted defense prospects, Boqvist was a low-risk pickup for the Panthers last summer on a one-year, league-minimum contract. He’d been bought out by the Blue Jackets with one season left on a three-year, $7.8MM deal, ending his tenure in Columbus prematurely after being brought in as the centerpiece of the return from the Blackhawks in the 2021 Seth Jones blockbuster.

    Selected eighth overall by Chicago in the 2018 draft, Boqvist looked well on his way to becoming a top-four fixture soon after the trade to Columbus. He wasn’t logging a ton of even strength minutes but had worked his way up to a consistent power play role and, when healthy, notched 46 points in 98 games over his first two seasons in Ohio. His lack of physicality had always been a sticking point, though, and, paired with underwhelming possession quality numbers, he entered the 2023-24 campaign further down on the depth chart than in years past.

    Healthy scratches and shoulder issues were the norm for Boqvist last season. He was limited to 35 appearances for the Jackets, scoring once and adding nine assists for 10 points. He averaged 18:17 per game when in the lineup, similar to the usage he’d had in years prior. However, he was an even less engaged checker with only 11 hits and fell behind as Columbus added veterans Ivan Provorov and Damon Severson to their ranks.

    The Panthers were optimistic that Boqvist could regain a regular role in Florida, helping accommodate the departures of power-play fixtures, such as Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Brandon Montour, in free agency after winning the Stanley Cup. He also linked up with older brother Jesper Boqvist, who signed a matching league-minimum deal with the Cats. While Boqvist did get a long look on the power play, he was quickly overtaken on the top unit by Aaron Ekblad and averaged just 10:48 per game at even strength, the lowest among Florida defenders. His 3.4 GA/60 at even strength also ranked last among Panthers D-men, leading to his poor defensive impacts outweighing any offensive benefit.

    Boqvist hits pause on his NHL career for now after recording six points (2 G, 4 A) in 18 appearances for the Panthers. If he suits up for Charlotte, it will mark his first AHL appearance since the 2019-20 campaign when he was still in the Blackhawks organization.

    The New York Islanders have claimed defenseman Adam Boqvist off waivers from the Florida Panthers.

    Boqvist, 24, has played in 18 games this season, scoring two goals and four assists for six points. He has played six NHL seasons with the Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Chicago Blackhawks, totaling 91 points (25 goals and 66 assists) over 227 games.

    The Falun, Sweden native, played one season with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League and was named to the OHL Second All-Star Team in 2018-19 after recording 60 points (20 goals and 40 assists) over 54 games. His 40 assists led the Knights.

    Sammy bagged the cash prize after winning the series alongside Jess Harding but called off their romance soon after they returned home.

    Speaking about his fresh chance at love, Sammy explained: ‘It did work out for me the first time, but things changed when I left the Villa. Hopefully this time round, I’ll leave with a relationship that goes the distance. 

    ‘Last time I was very much a boy and was immature at times in terms of not thinking about my actions beforehand.’

    He continued: ‘Now looking back, I feel like I’ve changed a lot and I’d like to think I’ve grown from a boy to a gentleman.’ 

    Danielle, who appeared in series three, is looking to find the man of her dreams as she returns.

  • DR Congo’s president says country won’t be humiliated after rebels claim takeover

    Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi has vowed “a vigorous and coordinated response” against a rebel alliance that has besieged swathes of the nation’s mineral-rich east and forced hundreds of local troops to surrender.

    In a defiant televised address on Wednesday, Tshisekedi declared that his country would not be “humiliated or crushed” as regional leaders push for negotiations with the rebels.

    Goma, the largest city in eastern DR Congo’s North Kivu province, fell under the control of the AFC/M23 rebel coalition on Monday, the rebels told CNN. This was the latest in a string of territorial acquisitions by the group in recent weeks. The Congolese government has not confirmed the rebels’ takeover in Goma but acknowledged the city was under siege.

    According to multiple local reports, the rebels are also advancing toward the center of the neighboring South Kivu after seizing towns in the province.

    The Congolese government accused its neighbor Rwanda of equipping the M23 with both weapons and troops. Rwanda does not deny the allegations but has criticized DR Congo for collaborating with a Hutu militia group against a mainly Tutsi rebel group, the CNDP, which M23 grew out of.

    Hutu militias carried out the genocide of Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda in 1994.

    Tshisekedi was not present when East African leaders met on Wednesday to find solutions to the crisis. At that meeting, they urged him “to directly engage with all stakeholders, including the M23 and other armed groups that have grievances.”

    Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who attended the meeting, said the only path to peace was for all parties to engage in dialogue and for mediators to understand the context of the conflict.

    Several people, including foreign peacekeepers, have reportedly died and hundreds more are injured as Congolese forces battle to push back against the rebels.

    In Goma, where residents told CNN that fighting has persisted, hundreds of government troops have been disarmed by M23, according to the Uruguayan army, whose troops are part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the area.

    Foreign mercenaries believed to be helping DR Congo’s army have also surrendered, according to Rwanda’s military, which said Wednesday it “received and escorted over 280 Romanian mercenaries who had been fighting alongside the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) in Eastern part of DRC.”

    CNN has contacted the Congolese military for comment on its alleged use of mercenaries.

    As tensions boil over in eastern DR Congo, authorities are faced with “two possible scenarios that may unfold,” according to an analysis by Ladd Serwat, a senior African analyst for ACLED, a UK-based group that collects data on violent conflict.

    “The control of Goma by M23 and Rwanda Defense Force could push the Congolese government and regional allies to negotiate,” Serwat said. Otherwise, he added, “Kinshasa could push for a military solution and widen the conflict through increased battles to retake Goma and cross-border attacks into Rwanda.”

    Tshisekedi has previously threatened to go to war with Rwanda. Kagame has responded in kind.

    “We are ready to fight,” Kagame told French network France 24 in June last year, adding: “We are not afraid of anything.”

    The rebels, known as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), have reportedly seized control of several towns in the eastern part of the country. This has raised concerns about the security situation in the region, as the ADF is known for its brutal attacks on civilians.

    President emphasized that the government is committed to protecting the sovereignty and integrity of the country. He urged the citizens to remain calm and vigilant, and assured them that the authorities are working tirelessly to address the situation.

    The international community has also expressed concerns about the escalating violence in DR Congo. Several countries and organizations have offered support to help the government in its efforts to combat the rebels and restore peace in the region.

    As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize the safety and well-being of the Congolese people.     If previous Icons are anything to go by, there should be loads of new cosmetics, including Sabrina Carpenter skins and jam tracks from the artist, reports InsiderGaming.

    Carpenter is also likely to be featured in the Fortnite shop as a bundle with exclusive items.
