  • Philippe Clement sends firm warning to Manchester United, explains Rangers plan for Europa League clash

Manchester United are back in Europa League action when they host Rangers on Thursday night.

Two matches remain in the League Phase of the Europa League, with Manchester United sitting in seventh place, knowing the top eight will progress to the knockout stages.

United face Rangers following a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Rangers progressed to the Scottish Cup last 16 at the weekend, with a 5-0 win over Fraserburgh.

The Gers are currently placed second in the Scottish Premiership, three points behind leaders Celtic. They also stand a chance of reaching the knockout phase and will be looking to cause an upset at Old Trafford.

This will be the first time the two teams meet in the Europa League. They previously clashed four times in the Champions League, with one draw and three United wins.

Paul Clement sends warning to Manchester United

Rangers manager Philippe Clement wants his players to go to Old Trafford with ambition.

It will be the first meeting between the two clubs since 2010 when United won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Wayne Rooney.

United won’t have Rooney this time and Clement will be hoping his side can take advantage of their opponent’s questionable form.

That said, United are unbeaten in Europe this season.

“I want pressure, to be very clear,” Clement said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “I want pressure on the team.

“I want my team to be ambitions. And if we are somewhere, that we have higher ambitions to make it better. So, that’s what we’re going to do.

“The team has worked really hard to be in a good position in this Europa League. They did really well in this Europa League.

“We know what Manchester United are. We know their level. But we’re going to go there to fight and to show ourselves and to do something really special. That’s our ambition, to go there and to do something special.”

    Manchester United face in-form Rangers

Rangers’ 5-0 win over Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup was their third successive win.

Clement’s side stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches ahead of their trip to Manchester.

United’s first team have made hard work of their European campaign, dropping points against FC Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce – but still managed to win their last two matches in the competition.

Rangers drew 1-1 with Tottenham in their previous Europa League outing. They also scored four goals in their games against FCSB and Nice.

Clement emphasized that Rangers have a clear plan in place for the game against Manchester United and they are determined to come out on top. He highlighted the importance of staying organized defensively and being clinical in front of goal.

The manager also pointed out the strengths of the Manchester United team, acknowledging their attacking prowess and quality players. However, Clement made it clear that Rangers are ready to face the challenge and are confident in their ability to secure a positive result.

  • Champions League makes January debut with high-stakes clash of struggling PSG and Man City | National Sports

GENEVA (AP) — The first Champions League games to be played in January include one with shocking possible consequences in an unpredictable debut season for the 36-team format.

Paris Saint-Germain vs. Manchester City on Wednesday is a clash of super-wealthy state-backed teams currently a barely believable 25th and 22nd in the standings.

If the 2020 beaten finalist and 2023 champion play to a draw at Parc des Princes, both could start the 18-game final round on Jan. 29 outside the top-24 places that qualify for the knockout stage.

The new format that replaced the traditional groups — now with eight games instead of six, facing eight different opponents, and two in January — is unknown territory even for UEFA, whose preseason prediction that eight points should ensure advancing likely will fall short.

However, few imagined what would play out in the first six rounds.

Man City and PSG have struggled, Real Madrid has lost half its games in 20th place despite adding Kylian Mbappé to a title-winning team, and lowest-ranked debutant Brest has cruised to four wins and seventh in the standings, just ahead of Lille.

“It would have been impossible to list these eight clubs as being in the top eight positions,” Giorgio Marchetti, the UEFA deputy general secretary, told The Associated Press in a recent interview. “There is a lot of new fresh air.”

“I think the format has an impact,” Marchetti said, pointing to comments by Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi that it is more difficult to prepare for eight different opponents instead of three. “It is more of a challenge.”

Which positions are teams playing for?

The top eight in the standings on Jan. 29 advance directly to the round of 16 that starts in March. They will likely include current leader Liverpool and second-place Barcelona which are the only two teams already certain to finish in the top 24. Liverpool is the only team to win all six games.

Teams placed from ninth to 24th go into the new knockout playoffs round. Nos. 9-16 will be seeded in the draw on Jan. 31 and will play the second leg at home. Teams placing 17 to 24 host the first legs.

Nos. 25-36 in the standings are eliminated and do not transfer to the Europa League. Already out are Leipzig, Slovan Bratislava and Young Boys which each lost all six games.

    Tuesday games

Liverpool hosts Lille and Barcelona is at 15th-place Benfica. Atletico Madrid in 11th place can rise above visiting Bayer Leverkusen, which is in fourth place with just one point more.

Aston Villa, the 1982 European Cup winner, can qualify for the round of 16 with a win at 16th-place Monaco.

Stuttgart, in 26th place, is favored to win at Slovan and move to 10 points, which would put pressure on PSG and Man City.

    Wednesday games

Real Madrid hosts struggling Salzburg, and third-place Arsenal can secure its round of 16 entry — and do Man City a favor — by winning at home against 24th-place Dinamo Zagreb.

Sixth-place Inter Milan goes to Sparta Prague, and Bayern Munich, in a surprising 10th place with 12 points, travels to Feyenoord which is 18th with 10 points.

Brest goes to Schalke’s stadium in neutral Germany to face Shakhtar Donetsk, which has four points and likely must win to stay in contention.

Why is the Champions League playing in January?

For the money, mostly. The most influential clubs wanted a bigger and more lucrative Champions League and got two extra midweek matches for all. The congested calendar for soccer left few options.

Historically, European club competitions took a midwinter break until March. Then February was occupied in 2001 by the Champions League when a new format with a second group stage started. February stayed on the calendar when the round of 16 started in 2004, and for the next two decades.

So when UEFA decided in 2022 on this eight-game league phase, January was needed even though some leagues in Nordic countries do not start until March, and others are still on midwinter breaks.

Austrian champion Sturm Graz, which plays at Atalanta on Tuesday, has not played a domestic game since Dec. 7 and will not resume until Feb. 1.

The Champions League is set to make its January debut with a high-stakes clash between struggling Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City. Both teams are looking to bounce back from recent disappointing results and secure a spot in the knockout stages of the competition.

PSG, who have been dealing with injuries to key players such as Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, have struggled in recent matches and are in danger of missing out on advancing to the next round. Meanwhile, Manchester City have also had their fair share of struggles this season, with inconsistent performances in the Premier League and in Europe.

The upcoming match between these two European giants is sure to be a thrilling and intense affair, with both teams desperate for a win to keep their Champions League hopes alive. • Barca confirm massive Dani Olmo blow ahead of Benfica clash as fears grow over longer absence

Barcelona have been hit by an injury blow to key playmaker Dani Olmo ahead of their next game against Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

Olmo complained of muscular discomfort in his calf after featuring as a substitute in the LaLiga draw against Getafe on Saturday and Barca have now confirmed that he will be out of the midweek match against the Portuguese side.

Barcelona, who are now third in the La Liga table and five points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, can qualify automatically for the next stage of the Champions League against Benfica.

However, the loss of Olmo will be a blow for Hansi Flick’s side – especially after his impressive showing against Real Betis in the Copa del Rey.

Flick is likely to give an update on how much time that Olmo is likely to miss at his press conference for the Benfica clash on Monday.

Barca were only granted provisional permission to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor by the Spanish national sports council (CSD) at the start of the month.

The players, both summer signings, were only registered for the first half of the season as Barcelona could not meet LaLiga’s wage cap restrictions.

They had initially been rejected by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and LaLiga in their efforts to register the duo.

However, the CSD stepped in on January 8 following an appeal by the club to grant a precautionary measure and allow the pair to play in the short term.

Latest Barcelona news: Offer for Liverpool star coming / Spurs to aid Rashford swoop

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz has made a clear decision on his future amid strong interest from Barcelona, with a report in his native Colombia claiming the big issue that the Reds have to overcome to keep hold of the star, as another big-name forward could be on his way out of Anfield.

Since his £37m move from FC Porto in January 2022, Diaz has established himself as one of the best players for Liverpool and has become a fan favourite. The Colombia international was one of the first names on the teamsheet under Jurgen Klopp, and he has kept his place in the Reds’ starting lineup under Arne Slot.

Diaz is under contract at Liverpool until the summer of 2027, and there has been speculation in the Spanish press that Barcelona are keen on signing him at the end of the season.

There have been reports that Diaz is not happy at Liverpool, with the chance to move to Barcelona seen favourably by the 28-year-old winger.

Those reports have now been backed by sources in Colombia. Antena 2 has reported that Barcelona have already told Liverpool that they plan to make an offer for Diaz in June, with a €70 (£59m, $72m) bid expected.

Meanwhile, Tottenham could inadvertently help Marcus Rashford to secure his preferred move out of Manchester United this month, with reports detailing the latest on Barcelona’s interest as well as a Spurs ‘offer’ that unlocks their deal.

Who has been the best value-for-money signing in the current Barcelona squad?

Barcelona fans have been dealt a massive blow as the club has confirmed that star midfielder Dani Olmo will miss the upcoming clash against Benfica due to injury. The news has sparked fears among fans that Olmo could be facing a longer spell on the sidelines.

Olmo, who has been in scintillating form for Barcelona this season, picked up a knock in training earlier this week and was unable to recover in time for the crucial Champions League match against Benfica. The absence of the talented playmaker is a huge blow for Barcelona as they look to secure a crucial victory in their quest to advance to the knockout stages of the competition.

Fans are now anxiously waiting for further updates on Olmo’s condition, with concerns growing that he could be out for an extended period of time. The loss of Olmo will undoubtedly be felt by Barcelona, who will need to find a way to cope without one of their key players in the upcoming matches.

As Barcelona prepare to face Benfica without Olmo, fans will be hoping for a swift recovery for the talented midfielder and are keeping their fingers crossed that he will be back on the pitch sooner rather than later.

  • La Liga 2024-25: Tchouameni set to miss Real Madrid clash with Las Palmas due to ‘leg discomfort’

Aurelien Tchouameni dropped out of Real Madrid’s squad to face Las Palmas in La Liga on Sunday “due to discomfort in his left leg”, said the Spanish champions in a statement.

The French midfielder, often used in defence by Madrid, was replaced in the squad by Jacobo Ramon and Chema Andres for the home match that kicks off at 15:15 GMT.

Los Blancos are a point behind La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid, who lost 1-0 on Saturday at Leganes. Real hosts RB Salzburg in a crucial Champions League game on Wednesday.

Real needed extra time on Friday to overcome Celta Vigo in the Copa Del Rey, scoring three goals in the second half of the extended period thanks to a brace from Endrick and a goal from Federico Valverde.

La Liga 2024-25: Tchouameni set to miss Real Madrid clash with Las Palmas due to ‘leg discomfort’

In a disappointing turn of events for Real Madrid fans, star midfielder Tchouameni is set to miss the upcoming clash against Las Palmas due to what the club has described as ‘leg discomfort’. The young Frenchman has been a key player for the team this season, and his absence will surely be felt on the pitch.

Tchouameni has been in fine form this season, with his performances earning him rave reviews from fans and pundits alike. His absence will be a blow to Real Madrid as they look to maintain their position at the top of the La Liga table.

While the exact nature of Tchouameni’s injury is unknown at this time, the club has stated that they are taking a cautious approach and will not rush him back into action. With a busy schedule ahead, including important Champions League matches, it is crucial that Tchouameni is fully fit before returning to the pitch.

In the meantime, Real Madrid will have to rely on their depth and quality to overcome Las Palmas without Tchouameni. Fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for the midfielder so that he can return to action as soon as possible.

More than a decade after the swift cancellation of the underrated show “Enlisted,” Fox has taken another bite at the apple of a broadcast workplace sitcom set within the United States military. As with its predecessor, the midseason premiere “Going Dutch” counters the global scope of its central employer with the intimate one of immediate family. What it adds to this shared premise is a long litany of jokes about bikes, tulips, prostitution, bluntness as a cultural value and cheese.

Created by Joel Church-Cooper (“Brockmire”), “Going Dutch” stars Denis Leary — also an executive producer, alongside his son Jack — as Colonel Patrick Quinn, a career officer who finds himself exiled to Stroopsdorf, “the least important army base in the world.” The Netherlands outpost’s bowling alley, laundry facilities and world-class fromagerie are under the interim command of Patrick’s estranged daughter Maggie (Taylor Misiak), who defends her colleagues’ lavender-picking, silent-disco-having ways…

Denis Leary Military Sitcom ‘Going Dutch’ Is a Culture Clash Farce That Could Be Something More: TV Review

Denis Leary is back on the small screen with his new military sitcom, “Going Dutch,” which follows the misadventures of a group of American soldiers stationed in the Netherlands. The show is a culture clash farce that has the potential to be something more, but falls short in its execution.

Leary stars as Sgt. Jack O’Malley, a gruff and sarcastic army veteran who is tasked with leading a group of misfit soldiers in a foreign country. The premise of the show is ripe with comedic potential, as the clash of American and Dutch cultures leads to plenty of misunderstandings and awkward situations.

While the show has its moments of hilarity, it often relies too heavily on tired stereotypes and predictable jokes. The characters are one-dimensional and the writing lacks the depth and nuance needed to truly explore the complexities of the culture clash at play.

That being said, there is still hope for “Going Dutch” to grow into something more. Leary is a talented actor and comedian, and with some tweaking and a more nuanced approach to the material, the show could find its footing and become a standout in the crowded world of military sitcoms.

Overall, “Going Dutch” is a fun and entertaining watch, but it falls short of reaching its full potential. With some fine-tuning and a deeper exploration of its themes, the show could evolve into something truly special. Only time will tell if “Going Dutch” can rise above its initial missteps and become a must-watch sitcom for fans of military comedy.

  • Aztecs, Rebels clash in first game since Mountain West tournament tilt – San Diego Union-Tribune

    SDSU vs. UNLV

    When: 5 p.m., Saturday

    Where: Viejas Arena

    On the air: CBSSN; 760-AM

    Records: SDSU 11-4, 4-2 MW; UNLV 10-7, 4-2

Series history: SDSU leads 44-38 and has won 23 of the last 26. UNLV, however, won the most recent regular-season meeting, 62-58 in Las Vegas last March. Nine days later, the Aztecs won 74-71 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West tournament.

Aztecs update: They put their 67-game win streak in Quad 3 or lower games on the line against the last school to beat them in one: UNLV in 2020 at Viejas Arena after SDSU had opened the season 26-0. The Aztecs remain solidly in the NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi, who has them as a 9 seed. Utah State and New Mexico are the only other Mountain West teams in his bracket (although the Lobos have slipped to one of the last teams in). Rebounding has been an issue all season, but UNLV is statistically even worse. The Aztecs rank 214th nationally in keeping opponents off the offensive boards; the Rebels are 322nd. Since 2013-14, SDSU leads the Mountain West with an .874 winning percentage (90-13) in home conference games. Boise State is second at .788 (82-22). Utah State and Nevada are the only other programs above .700. Senior guard Reese Waters, out all season with a stress fracture in his foot, has his next bone scan scheduled for Monday. The Kenpom metric projects a 71-59 Aztecs win. All fans entering Viejas Arena will receive a Brian Dutcher bobblehead. In addition, it is the annual ALS Awareness Game, with fans raising placards during a timeout to honor, remember and advocate for those afflicted with ALS.

Rebels update: They were 9-0 against teams outside the top 100 of the major metrics and 0-7 against teams inside it until Wednesday’s 65-62 home win against Utah State, which is No. 22 in the Associated Press poll. Last year, they had a similar big home win in January (against New Mexico) that untracked an underperforming season and they went on a 10-1 run, their best 11-game conference stretch since 1992. That got them into the NIT and they won their first postseason game in 16 years, reaching the quarterfinals. This team, like the last few editions under fourth-year coach Kevin Kruger, is filled with transfers. Only one starter is back: point guard Dedan Thomas Jr. (15.6 points, 4.5 assists). Another starter returned in forward Rob Whaley Jr., but he’s been injured for all but two games and is expected to take a medical redshirt. Also back is guard Jalen Hill, who tore knee ligaments in last year’s game at Viejas Arena, a 72-61 Aztecs win on Jan. 6. The Oklahoma transfer had his best game of the season in the Utah State win with 15 points (7 of 9 shooting) and eight rebounds. Jeremiah “Bear” Cherry, a 6-11, 280-pound San Diego native who spent two seasons at a JC in New Mexico, is averaging 9.2 points and 5.5 rebounds. The Rebels rank second in the Mountain West in 3-point accuracy at 37.1%. They’re 102nd in Kenpom, 109th in the NET.

Next up: Wednesday at Air Force (7 p.m. PST, CBSSN)
