  • ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ Climbs Netflix’s Streaming Chart

Released in 2022, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was one of the riskier Hollywood projects to hit theaters after the pandemic wreaked havoc across the industry. The film featured Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal in a story that parodied the real-life Face/Off actor and paid homage to his lengthy filmography while poking fun, too. Unfortunately, it proved to be a box office flop, barely making back most of its $30 million budget with a $29 million worldwide box office gross. However, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent turned out to be a great comedy with more than enough to warrant a viewing, and it’s making big waves on streaming this year.

Per Flix Patrol, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent reached the number four spot on Netflix’s Top 10 streaming titles on the platform on Friday. Netflix is known for revitalizing films that otherwise went unnoticed during their theatrical run, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is no exception. Moreover, critics and audiences universally loved the Cage-centric comedy, with both camps giving it an 87% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes upon its theatrical release.

In addition to Cage and Pascal, the cast of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent includes Sharon Horgan, Ike Barinholtz, Alessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Lily Sheen, Neil Patrick Harris, and Tiffany Haddish. The film was directed by Tom Gormican (That Awkward Moment) based on a script from him and frequent collaborator Kevin Etten (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F), who are teaming up again for the upcoming Anaconda reboot starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black. Check out the official synopsis for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent:

“Nicolas Cage stars as… Nick Cage in the action-comedy ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.’ Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, the fictionalized version of Cage must accept a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan (Pedro Pascal). Things take a wildly unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by a CIA operative (Tiffany Haddish) and forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones. With a career built for this very moment, the seminal award-winning actor must take on the role of a lifetime: Nick Cage.”

A Hilarious and Heartfelt Action Comedy All About Nicolas Cage

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent could have easily been too meta for its own good. It’s a meta-comedy that often references Nicolas Cage’s past films, especially Face/Off and other beloved classics. The film is filled with Easter eggs, and much of its thematic weight rests on the audience being familiar with Cage’s work. However, it’s hard to argue against how The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent balances being a Cage-fest while managing to be an entertaining action comedy featuring another superstar in the making, Pedro Pascal.

‘John Wick 4’ star Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd will join Nicolas Cage in the follow-up.

For most of its runtime, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent feels like an alternate timeline where Cage lost his touch at his late age (not the case in real life if you ask us) and constantly looks back at the peak of his career as a young, successful actor. There is an inherent earnestness to having Cage reflect on his filmography in such a goofy and surreal fashion, as well as reckon with the reality of an aging actor who continues to have a diehard fanbase. At some point, it seems the film would have been radically different if Cage had not signed up for it, but we’re very glad he did.

  • Tennessee still No. 1 in AP men’s Top 25; UCLA climbs 7 spots

Tennessee still No. 1 in AP men’s Top 25; UCLA climbs 7 spots

Tennessee remains No. 1 after a quiet holiday week in the AP Top 25.

The Volunteers received 41 first-place votes from a 61-person media panel in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll released Monday. No. 2 Auburn had 20 first-place votes, with Iowa State, Duke and Alabama rounding out the top five.

The Tigers gained ground on Tennessee’s No. 1 spot last Monday and did it again this week despite not playing, picking up eight additional first-place votes.

The top 13 teams remained unchanged, following a week in which 12 ranked teams didn’t play.

Tennessee won its lone game of Christmas week, beating Middle Tennessee 82-64 last Monday night to retain the No. 1 spot for the third straight week.

Tennessee is among four unbeatens left in men’s Division I basketball, including three from the Southeastern Conference, joining No. 6 Florida (10-0) and No. 12 Oklahoma (10-0). Drake (9-0) also begins this week undefeated.

The Gators beat Stetson 85-45, and the Sooners knocked off Prairie View 89-67.

The SEC continued to dominate the Top 25, with No. 6 Florida giving the league four of the top six.

    UCLA’s rise

Most of the AP Top 25 teams in action last week went up against schools from smaller conferences.

    Not UCLA and Gonzaga.

The Zags and Bruins played the final marquee game of the nonconference season on Saturday, squaring off in the first college basketball game played at the Intuit Dome, the new home of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers.

UCLA held off Gonzaga’s late rally to pull out a 65-62 win behind Eric Dailey Jr.’s 18 points and was rewarded in this week’s poll by moving up seven spots to No. 15. Gonzaga dropped five spots to No. 19 with the loss.

    Rising and falling

UCLA was the only team to move up more than two spots in this week’s poll.

No. 24 Mississippi barely held on to a ranking, dropping eight places following an 87-70 loss to No. 21 Memphis on Saturday.

    In and out

Memphis was the only team to move into this week’s poll after the win over Ole Miss.

San Diego State dropped out from No. 20 after losing 67-66 to Utah State on Tucker Anderson‘s 3-pointer with 6.8 seconds left. The Aggies appeared on 14 ballots after the win.

    Conference watch

The SEC leads all conferences with 10 ranked teams. The Big Ten and Big 12 each have five and the Big East two. The Atlantic Coast, West Coast and American Athletic conferences each have one.

In the latest AP men’s Top 25 rankings, Tennessee remains on top as the No. 1 team in the country. The Volunteers have continued their impressive run this season, boasting a 9-1 record and securing wins against tough opponents.

Meanwhile, UCLA has made a significant jump in the rankings, climbing 7 spots to No. 12. The Bruins have been on a hot streak lately, winning their last five games and showcasing their talent on both ends of the court.

With conference play heating up and the NCAA tournament on the horizon, it will be interesting to see how these teams continue to perform and if any other teams can challenge Tennessee for the top spot. Stay tuned for more updates on college basketball’s top teams.
