Ravens to clinch AFC North? Will Bengals keep playoff hopes alive?

Why Brooke picked the Vikings: Game 272 is for all the NFC marbles. The winner claims the division and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, while the loser heads on the road for a wild-card meeting next week. The Lions edged the Vikings in their first meeting in Week 7, and they continue to flex their muscle despite having countless injuries to key players. Both Jared Goff and Sam Darnold are playing the best football of their careers thanks to excellent play-calling by Ben Johnson and Kevin O’Connell, respectively, and having exquisite playmakers around them. These two offenses are moving the ball at will, and it’s a beautiful thing to watch. Thus, the final outcome hinges on which defense will make the most plays Sunday night. Goff has been great against man coverage all season long, throwing for 19 TDs with zero interceptions, but will face a Brian Flores-led unit that plays a lot of zone, which Goff has struggled against at times (17 pass TDs, 10 INTs). Despite playing zone coverage on 74.1 percent of opposing dropbacks, Minnesota’s defense is no slouch when it does play man either, allowing a 69 percent passer rating (lowest in the NFL) and recording the second-most INTs with eight, per Next Gen Stats. On the flip side, Detroit’s defense is allowing the most yards per play (7.4) since Week 14, and it has struggled to get to the quarterback on a regular basis (yes, Aidan Hutchinson still leads the team in sacks despite not playing in the last 11 games). The Lions have relied on the blitz, an area in which Darnold thrives, and must find a way to slow Minnesota’s deep passing attack. The Vikings duo of Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison will look to take advantage of a defense that has allowed 389 yards on deep passes (20-plus air yards) since Week 14, per Next Gen Stats.

Detroit desperately needs a week off with all the injuries, and Minnesota is gaining some serious momentum heading into the postseason. I won’t be surprised in the least bit to see Detroit win the season finale, but based on injuries and how each defense is playing right now, I’m riding with Minnesota.

As the NFL regular season winds down, the Baltimore Ravens are in a prime position to clinch the AFC North title. With a 9-4 record and a two-game lead over their division rivals, the Ravens are poised to secure the top spot in the division and a spot in the playoffs.

However, the Cincinnati Bengals are not out of the playoff picture just yet. With a 7-6 record and currently holding the final wild card spot in the AFC, the Bengals still have a chance to keep their playoff hopes alive. They will need to win their remaining games and hope for some help from other teams in order to secure a spot in the postseason.

With only a few games left in the regular season, the race for the AFC North title and the playoff spots in the conference is heating up. Will the Ravens be able to clinch the division, or will the Bengals pull off a late-season push to keep their playoff hopes alive? Stay tuned to find out.

  • How Detroit can clinch NFC’s No. 1 seed

How Detroit can clinch NFC’s No. 1 seed

With the Detroit Lions currently sitting at the top of the NFC standings, the possibility of clinching the No. 1 seed in the conference is within reach. Here are a few key steps the Lions can take to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs:

    1. Keep winning: The most obvious way for Detroit to clinch the top seed is to continue winning games. With a strong record already in place, the Lions must maintain their focus and momentum in order to secure victories in the remaining games of the regular season.

    2. Defend Ford Field: With a perfect record at home this season, the Lions must continue to dominate at Ford Field. By winning their remaining home games, Detroit can solidify their position as the top seed in the NFC and give themselves a significant advantage heading into the playoffs.

    3. Get healthy: Injuries are always a concern as the season progresses, but the Lions must prioritize getting key players healthy and back on the field. A fully healthy roster will give Detroit the best chance of securing the No. 1 seed and making a deep playoff run.

    4. Focus on the details: In close games, the little things can make a big difference. Whether it’s avoiding turnovers, converting on third downs, or excelling in the red zone, the Lions must pay attention to the details and execute at a high level in order to secure the top seed in the NFC.

By following these steps and staying focused on their ultimate goal, the Detroit Lions have a strong chance of clinching the No. 1 seed in the NFC and positioning themselves for success in the playoffs. Go Lions! #OnePride

  • Saquon Barkley eclipses 2,000-yard mark as Eagles clinch NFC East

Saquon Barkley eclipses 2,000-yard mark as Eagles clinch NFC East

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles running back Saquon Barkley on Sunday became just the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.

The accomplishment came in the fourth quarter of a 41-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys that clinched the NFC East Division title for the Eagles.

“Being a fan of the game and the running back position, to reach a milestone and put myself up there with eight other backs that I respect, and some I grew up watching, definitely means a lot,” Barkley said, donning an NFC East champion hat for the first time in his career. “But at the same time, I wouldn’t be able to do that without this team. You can’t be great without the greatness of others.”

The coaching staff kept Barkley in the game in the fourth quarter despite Philadelphia holding a big lead. He was handed the ball on five straight plays, the last of which was a 23-yard scamper down the left side that put him over 2,000 yards.

Barkley trotted to the sideline and received a pat on the head from lineman Mekhi Becton and a hug from offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Coach Nick Sirianni then called a timeout, allowing the rest of his teammates to swarm Barkley and offer their congratulations while the fans broke into “MVP” chants.

“It’s a testament to him, coming to another team, first year, a lot of expectations. He’s truly a super-talented football player, a great teammate,” right tackle Lane Johnson said. “I was happy for him.”

Barkley was replaced in the lineup by Kenneth Gainwell after surpassing the 2,000-yard mark. Barkley finished with 167 yards on 31 carries. He is now just 101 yards from breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record (2,105 yards).

Now the question becomes: With the division wrapped up and the chances slim of capturing the No. 1 seed in the NFC, will he have a chance to chase Dickerson in the regular-season finale against the New York Giants?

Sirianni will have to weigh allowing Barkley the chance to capture the rarest of records versus ensuring his health heading into the postseason.

“I always have to do what’s right for the football team to reach our goals of what we need to do,” Sirianni said. “I’ve got a lot to think about.”

Johnson’s stance was that the group had accomplished its goal of surpassing 2,000 yards and suggested the starters should rest Week 18 under the philosophy that it’s “better to be safe than sorry.”

Left tackle Jordan Mailata, meanwhile, said he will “push for” the starters to play against New York even if the game has no meaning in terms of playoff seeding, though he sounded unsure whether Sirianni would go for it.

“It’s an opportunity to make history,” Mailata said. “We never really spoke about the Giants next week, but we just had the feeling that if we don’t go for it today, we might sit out. We don’t know. Coach hasn’t really said anything yet. We’ll see.”

Barkley said he’ll be fine with whatever Sirianni decides.

“Whatever his decision is, I’m all for it,” Barkley said. “If his mindset is, we’ll go out there and try it, I’ll go out there and try it. If his mindset is, let’s rest and get ready for this run, I’m all for that, too … I came here to do something special. Breaking a record is special but I want a banner up there. I think we all do.”

With the win, the Eagles completed their first season sweep of the Cowboys since 2011. This is the 20th straight season the NFC East does not have a repeat champion, which is the longest streak in NFL history.

Philadelphia accomplished the feat while operating with its No. 2 and No. 3 quarterbacks at the controls.

Kenny Pickett got the start for Jalen Hurts, who suffered a concussion against the Washington Commanders last week. Pickett, a New Jersey native who grew up cheering for the Eagles, had a strong performance (10 of 15, 143 yards, 2 total touchdowns) but was playing through injured ribs and had to exit the game after a couple of hard hits during the opening series of the second half.

“I’m good. I’ll be all right,” Pickett said. “Came in with a little bit of an injury. We’ll do some more tests to see how it looks, but I’ll be OK.”

Tanner McKee, the 2023 sixth-round pick out of Stanford, received the bulk of the first-team reps Friday so Pickett could rest, Johnson said. McKee made the most of his opportunity, going 3-of-4 for 54 yards with 2 touchdown tosses.

The Eagles (13-3) reached 13 wins for just the fourth time in franchise history. The other three times (2004, 2017, 2022) they went to the Super Bowl.

There is one game left before the playoffs. Should Barkley sit out that game against his former team, it would be just fine with Dickerson, who made it clear to the Los Angeles Times he does not want Barkley to break his long-standing record.

“If you had a record, would you want me to break your record?” Barkley said when asked to respond to Dickerson’s comments. “It’s an honor to … have your name attached to that record and having guys chase it. Guys have been chasing that record for 40 years. I don’t see it as a shot, I don’t see it as throwing shade. You shouldn’t want me to break that record. That’s how I look at it.”

In a thrilling season finale, Saquon Barkley made history by surpassing the 2,000-yard rushing mark, solidifying his place as one of the league’s top running backs. Barkley’s incredible performance helped lead the Eagles to a crucial victory, clinching the NFC East division title and securing a spot in the playoffs.

Barkley’s dominant display on the field was a sight to behold, as he consistently broke tackles, made defenders miss, and showcased his incredible speed and agility. His determination and talent were on full display as he carried the team on his back and delivered when it mattered most.

With the Eagles heading to the playoffs as division champions, Barkley’s record-breaking season has undoubtedly been a key factor in their success. As they prepare for the postseason, fans are hopeful that Barkley’s exceptional play will continue to propel the team towards their ultimate goal of a Super Bowl victory.

Congratulations to Saquon Barkley and the Eagles on their remarkable accomplishments this season. The future looks bright for this talented team, and fans can’t wait to see what they will achieve in the playoffs.

  • NFL playoff picture and draft order Week 17: Vikings hang on in race for top seed as Rams, Commanders clinch

NFL playoff picture and draft order Week 17: Vikings hang on in race for top seed as Rams, Commanders clinch

As Week 17 of the season wraps up, we now know this: The Philadelphia Eagles are NFC East champions, the Indianapolis Colts were eliminated from the AFC playoff race, and both the Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams earned playoff spots.

And the NFC race will now come down to a winner-take-all battle in the NFC North.

The Eagles became the first team in the NFC to claim a division title after their blowout of the rival Dallas Cowboys. Their chances of winning the conference, however, were eliminated on Sunday afternoon after the Vikings held on to beat the Green Bay Packers in Minneapolis. The Vikings’ matchup with the Detroit Lions next week will now determine who wins both the NFC North and the NFC’s No. 1 seed as a whole. The winner of that game gets a first-round bye, and the loser will be the No. 5 seed and have to travel for their first playoff game.

Also in the NFC, the Washington Commanders secured a playoff spot with their overtime win against the Atlanta Falcons. That also gave the Los Angeles Rams the NFC West title and a playoff spot of their own via the strength of victory tiebreaker against the Seattle Seahawks after beating the Arizona Cardinals, 13-9, on Saturday night.

In the AFC, six of the seven playoff spots are taken, and one of them won’t be the Colts, who lost at the New York Giants on Sunday. The defeat knocked them out of the postseason race.

The Kansas City Chiefs clinched the conference’s overall top seed with a 29-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday. The Los Angeles Chargers joined the postseason party with a 40-7 win over the New England Patriots on Saturday afternoon. And the Cincinnati Bengals avoided elimination by defeating the Denver Broncos in overtime on Saturday night.

The Broncos missed a chance to clinch a playoff berth with a win or tie at the Bengals. It would’ve been their first time in the postseason since winning Super Bowl 50. They will conclude the regular season against the Chiefs, who don’t have much to play for with the No. 1 seed already secured.

In order to nab that final postseason wild-card ticket, the Bengals need to win their regular-season finale against the Steelers, have the Broncos lose to the Chiefs and the Dolphins lose next week at the New York Jets. Miami rolled over the Browns on Sunday afternoon.

The Dolphins can get that final playoff slot with a win against the Jets and a Broncos defeat in Week 18.

The NFC North title is up for grabs and down to the Lions and Vikings.

The Vikings beat the Packers at home on Sunday to get to 14-2 on the season. That moved them into the lead in the NFC North. The division will come down to their game next week in Detroit regardless of whether the Lions beat the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. As of now, the Vikings are looking at a first-round bye in the playoffs.

The rest of the conference is just about solidified. The Commanders are back in the playoffs for the first time since winning the division in 2020 after beating the Falcons. The Buccaneers are leading the NFC South after their blowout win over the Carolina Panthers, but that division is not yet locked up.

Here’s a look at where things stand playoff-wise as we enter the last four games of Week 17.

As for the draft order, both the New York Giants and the Las Vegas Raiders are playing their way out of the top pick and an easy spot to acquire a new franchise quarterback.

The New England Patriots moved into position to claim the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft this weekend after both the Giants and Raiders won. Both franchises could use a new quarterback, and both Miami star Cam Ward and Colorado star Shedeur Sanders are available and expected to go early in the draft. It would’ve been an easy move for both the Giants and Raiders to scoop either quarterback had they lost on Sunday. Now, though, it’s unclear if either player will still be around by the time they are on the clock.

The Washington Commanders have officially clinched a spot in the NFL postseason after a thrilling victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. With their win, the Commanders secured a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

The Commanders have been on a hot streak in recent weeks, winning five of their last six games to secure their spot in the postseason. Led by quarterback Taylor Heinicke and a stingy defense, the Commanders have proven to be a force to be reckoned with in the NFC East.

In Sunday’s game against the Eagles, Heinicke threw for over 200 yards and two touchdowns, while the defense held Philadelphia’s high-powered offense in check. The Commanders’ special teams also came up big, with a blocked punt leading to a crucial touchdown in the second quarter.

Head coach Ron Rivera has been instrumental in turning the Commanders’ season around, instilling a winning culture and a never-say-die attitude in his players. Rivera’s leadership has been crucial in guiding the team to the playoffs, and his experience in the postseason will be invaluable as the Commanders look to make a deep run.

The Commanders’ playoff berth is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and coaching staff, who have overcome adversity and injuries to secure their spot in the postseason. Fans in Washington are ecstatic about their team’s success and are eagerly anticipating the team’s playoff run.

With the playoffs just around the corner, the Commanders are poised to make some noise in the postseason. With a balanced offense, a stout defense, and a never-say-die attitude, the Commanders have all the tools to make a deep playoff run and potentially compete for a Super Bowl title.

As the Commanders gear up for the postseason, fans can’t help but be excited about the team’s potential. With a playoff spot secured, the Commanders are ready to take on the best teams in the league and prove that they belong among the NFL’s elite. The road to the Super Bowl won’t be easy, but with the Commanders’ talent and determination, anything is possible.

Rams clinch 2024 NFC West title

It took handling their own business and some help from other teams, but the Rams became the NFC West division champions Sunday via the Strength of Victory tiebreaker over the Seahawks.

It is the Rams’ fourth division title under head coach Sean McVay and first since 2021.

In order to clinch the division in Week 17, the Rams needed a win over the Cardinals Saturday night, plus at least four wins from any of the Bengals, Bills, Browns, Vikings, Commanders and 49ers to win the Strength of Victory tiebreaker over the Seahawks. The Bengals knocked off the Broncos in overtime Saturday leading into Rams-Cardinals. On Sunday, the Bills defeated the Jets, the Vikings defeated the Packers, and the Commanders defeated the Falcons in overtime on Sunday Night Football.

McVay in a video conference with reporters Sunday morning acknowledged he’d have the games on to keep tabs on those outcomes, but that most of his focus was toward preparing for next week’s regular season finale against the Seahawks.

“I’ll have them on,” McVay said. “I’ll definitely be paying attention to them but I think for us… we’ll clean this film up. We’ll get with the coaches and then we’ll start to get our plans together as far as what’s the best way to approach our Seattle preparation like we would in any other week while having our eye on those games. Maybe a little bit more intentful, but that’s typically what I would do if we had played a little bit earlier anyways.”

Asked how the team would celebrate if they ended up clinching today, given they’ve structured their week of preparation in anticipation of facing the Seahawks next Saturday and therefore have the player off day scheduled for tomorrow instead of Tuesday, McVay said he don’t know, but “that’d be a positive problem though.”

“Maybe I’ll call guys up, say congratulations, we’ll have a Zoom team meeting,” McVay said with a smile. “I don’t know. It’s weird. If we were able to do that, you’d love to be able to do that collectively. However we do it, I’m certainly not going to be complaining. Let’s hope that’s an answer that I have for you the next time we connect.”

The feat is a remarkable one when considering the Rams began the season 1-4, then won 9 of their last 11 – including five-straight entering Week 18 – to put themselves in position to capture the division title.

“I don’t want to get too much into hypotheticals, but sitting here doing this at 1-4 and to where we are right now, I sure am proud of this group,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said postgame. “Got a lot more football to play and a lot more to earn, but we’ve earned the opportunity to be where we are. And whatever that is, that is at the end of the weekend. But I’m proud of this group and the way they’ve battled back. A lot of people doubting us, a lot of people writing us off at 1-4, and being able to sit here with our record is what it is right now, I feel proud of this group.”

Rams clinch NFC West title thanks to strength of victory tiebreaker over Seahawks

The Los Angeles Rams celebrated a victory on Saturday.

On Sunday, a playoff celebration followed.

The Rams, who defeated the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday night, clinched the NFC West title thanks to a strength of victory tiebreaker over the Seattle Seahawks. L.A. earned that tiebreaker on Sunday by virtue of wins by the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings and Washington Commanders. It was the Commanders’ Sunday night win, one in which Washington clinched a playoff berth itself, that was the official clincher to send the Rams to the postseason.

The Rams improved to 10-6 on the season with their win over the Cards. The Seahawks (9-7), who defeated the Chicago Bears on Thursday, can match L.A. in overall record with a win over the Rams next week, but that win would only split the season series, resulting in the tiebreaking process.

Los Angeles is now playoff-bound for the sixth time in eight seasons under Sean McVay and has won its first division crown since the 2021 season, when it went on to win the Super Bowl.

The Rams are rolling right now, having won five in a row, clinched a playoff spot on their off day and are 9-2 since their bye.

The Los Angeles Rams have officially clinched the NFC West title, edging out the Seattle Seahawks thanks to the strength of victory tiebreaker.

Both teams finished the regular season with a 9-8 record, but the Rams’ victories over tougher opponents throughout the season gave them the edge in the tiebreaker. This marks the second consecutive division title for the Rams, who will now advance to the playoffs with home-field advantage.

The Rams’ strong performance throughout the season, led by standout players such as quarterback Matthew Stafford and defensive star Aaron Donald, has solidified their position as a top contender in the NFC. With their high-powered offense and tenacious defense, the Rams are poised to make a deep playoff run and potentially compete for a Super Bowl title.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Rams on their NFC West title and best of luck in the playoffs! #RamsHouse #NFCWestChamps
