Drew Eubanks, Patty Mills traded to Clippers
I went up to Patty Mills — 36-year-old Patty Mills, NBA champion Patty Mills — and asked the same question. The same pause followed. “I don’t know. I don’t know. I’ve always played for purpose. I play for purpose, that’s for sure. So when purpose isn’t there, it’s definitely hard,” Mills said. “It’s obviously a business, and everyone realizes when you get to this stage. There are situations that will happen that will remind you of that. At the end of the day — it’s a business call for sure — our job is to go out there and help develop, help teach, especially these young guys, how to be professionals.” -via Salt Lake Tribune / January 22, 2025
The Portland Trail Blazers have made a major move, trading Drew Eubanks and Patty Mills to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for a package of draft picks and young players. This trade signals a shift in the Blazers’ roster and sets the stage for a new era in Portland. Eubanks and Mills have been fan favorites in Portland, but the team is looking to shake things up and improve their chances of contending in the playoffs. Stay tuned for more updates on this blockbuster trade.

Suns make surprising choice to start Royce O’Neale over Bradley Beal against Clippers
Despite an opening in the starting lineup with Ryan Dunn out with an ankle injury, the Phoenix Suns started Royce O’Neale instead of Bradley Beal in last night’s 111-109 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
Since the three-time All-Star moved to the bench earlier this month, Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer has been adamant that Beal will remain there for the foreseeable future.
When asked last night about the decision to start O’Neale over Beal, he said he’s “just trying to keep some of those same combinations” that the team has held since Beal moved to the bench. O’Neale plays the same position as Dunn while Beal primarily plays shooting guard.
“Little bit of gut.”
Mike Budenholzer on why he went with Mason Plumlee down the stretch instead of Nick Richards.

When asked if the move was going to be a long-term decision after the announcement was made that he was moving to the bench before a contest against the Philadelphia 76ers, Budenholzer tried to walk around giving a definitive answer but eluded to the fact that it was likely to be longterm.
“This is a real decision,” Budenholzer stated. “Life in the NBA and life in general. I don’t think you should ever paint yourself into corners, but this is what we plan to do. Continue to evaluate but I wouldn’t turn this into a day-to-day type thing.”

The Suns are 9-3 since the shooting guard moved to the bench. In the nine games he’s played since then, he’s averaging 14.7 points on 49% from the field and 38.5% shooting from deep.
Speculation has continued to strengthen the closer the trade deadline has gotten regarding the Suns trading Beal in a package that sends them Jimmy Butler, which many have said is why he is coming off the bench in the first place.
With Phoenix playing their best basketball since the start of the season where they went 8-1 out the gate, the team seems committed to keeping their third-leading scorer and minutes leader in his current bench role.
In a shocking move, the Phoenix Suns have decided to start Royce O’Neale over star guard Bradley Beal in their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Clippers. This decision has left fans and analysts alike scratching their heads, as Beal is widely regarded as one of the top players in the league. Many are questioning the rationale behind this surprising choice, as Beal has been a consistent performer for the Suns this season and is known for his scoring ability and leadership on the court. O’Neale, on the other hand, has been a role player for the team and is not typically in the starting lineup.
It remains to be seen how this decision will impact the Suns’ performance against the Clippers, but one thing is for certain – all eyes will be on O’Neale as he steps into the spotlight in this unexpected starting role. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Royce O’Neale steps up as starter in Suns’ win vs Harden, Clippers
Phoenix Suns coach Mike Budenholzer could’ve easily given the starting nod to Bradley Beal for their 111-109 home win against the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday.
Prior to the game, Budenholzer didn’t reveal who’d replace injured rookie wing Ryan Dunn (left ankle sprain) in the starting lineup. He ultimately rolled with Royce O’Neale instead of Beal.
“He could’ve went with anybody and he chose me,” O’Neale told The Arizona Republic after the game. “Don’t change my mindset. Just play as hard as I can, come in and impact the game and just be me.”
Most observers would have predicted Beal the choice after he scored 20 points in 38 minutes off the bench during Phoenix’s 119-109 home win over Washington on Saturday. He also was a starter up until a few weeks ago, when Budenholzer replaced him with Dunn.
During O’Neale’s 10th start this season Monday, he scored 11 points, hit 3-of-8 from 3 and matched his season-high of four steals against L.A.

O’Neale is known as a versatile playmaker, tough defender, solid 3-point shooter (Suns’ third-best 40.5% on 5.6 attempts per game) and penetrator. Budenholzer’s plan was to have him stick to James Harden and have Beal back him up with that task and contain Kawhi Leonard.
“He gave us a presence on Harden,” Budeholzer said about O’Neale. “We had a lot of different people we were gonna throw at Harden, but I think starting with Royce and then coming with Brad. I thought Brad did a great job on Harden, did a great job on Kawhi.
“Just trying to keep those same combinations we’ve been talking about. … He and Royce defensively I thought gave us a great presence on Harden and Leonard,” Budenholzer continued.
At the Suns’ Monday shootaround, Tyus Jones said Harden’s recently played “in a really good rhythm.” He’s a high-level scorer and distributor (21.7 points per game, NBA’s sixth-best at 8.3 assists), and dropped 40 and nine in L.A.’s win over Milwaukee on Saturday.
“It’s a group effort, especially on the defense,” O’Neale said about Harden. “I think all of us being connected and talking. We know he likes to hit the pocket pass, or the step-back 3, or attack. So I think just trying to make things tough for him, taking every advantage.”
The same goes for Leonard, who played his eighth game of the season after being sidelined most of the season from his recurring knee injury.
O’Neale and Beal helped limit Harden and Leonard to just eight and four points during the first half, respectively. Harden finished with 24 points, the game-high 10 assists and six rebounds. His other game-high, though, was six turnovers. Leonard ended the game with 17 points and five boards.
Two of O’Neale’s steals and one of Beal’s two steals were off Harden. The Clippers guard’s other early turnover was when Harden had Grayson Allen on an isolation drive, and Allen rotated over to help and pick up a charge on Harden.
O’Neale nearly got what would’ve been his first steal off Harden, and five total, at 7:05 in the first. Harden dribbled at mid-court and O’Neale disrupted his dribble before he initiated an offensive play and they got tied up for a jump-ball.
“When he plays that way picking you up as soon as the ball crosses half-court, using his hands well – always been great with his hands,” Kevin Durant said.
“He’s physical and just plays hard. Sometimes you might be out of position, but if you play hard you get steals, you get blocks, so Royce was great tonight,” Durant added.
O’Neale also set the tone for Phoenix with their 3-point shooting, in which they matched a season-high 22 made from the arc.
He knocked down the Suns’ first triple in the first quarter’s opening minutes, two more in the second. His third trey in the first half’s final minute extended their largest lead to 13.
The Suns have played well in January, edging the Clippers to get eight wins out of their past 10 games.
O’Neale feels that his teammates haven’t been rattled by the media’s trade speculation surrounding Beal and Jimmy Butler, or the frenzy about Budenholzer and the Suns’ former starting center Jusuf Nurkic not talking for two months while he’s on the trading block.
“Never too high, never too low, keep playing and being us,” O’Neale said. “Outside noise is always gonna be outside. I think we just focused on each other, try to win as many games as we can. That’s what it’s about.”
In a thrilling matchup against James Harden and the LA Clippers, Royce O’Neale proved his worth as a starter for the Phoenix Suns. O’Neale’s impressive performance helped lead the Suns to a crucial victory, showcasing his ability to step up in high-pressure situations. The game was a back-and-forth battle from start to finish, with both teams trading baskets and momentum swings. O’Neale’s defensive prowess was on full display as he locked down Harden, one of the league’s most prolific scorers, and limited his impact on the game. His tenacity on the defensive end sparked the Suns’ energy and helped set the tone for the team’s overall performance.
Offensively, O’Neale also made his presence felt, knocking down key shots and making smart plays to keep the Suns in control of the game. His ability to contribute on both ends of the floor was crucial in securing the win for Phoenix, as they continue to solidify their position as a top contender in the Western Conference.
As O’Neale continues to excel in his role as a starter for the Suns, his contributions will be vital to the team’s success moving forward. His performance against Harden and the Clippers serves as a reminder of his value to the team and his ability to rise to the occasion in big moments. Suns fans can rest assured knowing that O’Neale is more than capable of stepping up when his team needs him most.

Clippers at Hornets picks and predictions
Prediction
Clippers 109, Hornets 100
Moneyline
PASS.
The Hornets (+650) will be missing their most efficient offensive weapon in Ball along with some other minor pieces. Without Ball, they stand little chance and shouldn’t be taken to win outright, although they do have some value on the spread.
Against the spread
BET HORNETS +14.5 (-110).
Charlotte is 3-2-1 ATS in its last 6 home games. As double-digit underdogs, the Hornets are 4-1 ATS in the last 5. The Hornets have scored at least 107 points in 3 of their last 5 and 8 of their last 10, so they should be able to keep pace with the Clippers, especially on their home floor.
The Clippers are 1-1 ATS in their last 2 road games — they were favored in both. Meanwhile, LA is 3-5 ATS in its last 8 on the road.
Considering the big spread, BACK HORNETS +14.5 (-110).
Over/Under
BET UNDER 214.5 (-115).
Neither team plays at a fast tempo. The Hornets rank 22nd and the Clippers rank 20th in pace, so this has the writing of a slow game, which should equate to fewer scoring opportunities.
The Clippers, who are 4-6 O/U in their last 10, have traded off going Over and Under in 8 straight and are primed to cash an Under. The Hornets have gone Under in 4 straight games, allowing 104 or fewer points in 3 of those.
BET UNDER 214.5 (-115).

The LA Clippers are set to face off against the Charlotte Hornets in an exciting matchup on Friday night. The Hornets, on the other hand, have odds of +130. This game is shaping up to be a close one, with both teams having talented rosters and the potential for a high-scoring affair.
In terms of picks and predictions, the Clippers have been playing well recently and have a slight edge in terms of talent and experience. However, the Hornets have been surprising many with their strong play this season and could certainly pull off an upset.

for toddlersNBA News: Kawhi Leonard believes James Harden and another Clippers teammate deserve All-Star nods
Los Angeles Clippers pulled off an impressive 127-117 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, powered by stellar performances from James Harden and Norman Powell. After the game, Kawhi Leonard praised his teammates and expressed his belief that both Harden and Powell deserve spots on the NBA All-Star roster.
“[James Harden] and [Norman Powell] closing out that game was special,” Leonard said. “It was great, very special. Them taking on the challenge, getting to their spots—they made it look easy.”
Leonard went on to highlight their consistency this season: “They’ve been playing great all year. There’s a lot of politics in [All-Star selections]. I’m not sure if they’re going to give us two players, but hopefully, they do. They’ve been playing at a high level.”
James Harden delivered a game-high 40 points, along with five rebounds and nine assists. He shot 12-of-24 from the field and went a perfect 12-of-12 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Norman Powell contributed 33 points, six rebounds, and three steals on 11-of-23 shooting. The Clippers improved to an impressive 22-8 (.733 win percentage) this season in games where Powell scores at least 18 points.

Harden: All-Star recognition is secondary to team goals
A 10-time NBA All-Star, James Harden remains one of the league’s most respected players, but he downplayed the significance of individual accolades this season.

“It would mean a lot,” Harden said when asked about potentially earning another All-Star nod. “I think it would be my 10th or 11th. Just being one of the top 24 players in this league—I feel like I deserve it. But I’m not going to campaign for myself. I just go out there, put the work in, and it is what it is.”
Harden emphasized that team success is his primary focus: “We’re, what, top five or top six [in the standings]? [Norm] is shooting the ball at a high clip, leading our team in scoring. Somebody’s got to make it. We’ve put the work in and put ourselves in a really good position. But that’s out of our control. For us, I think we’re just focused on continuing to rack up wins because we’ve got a bigger goal than All-Star Games.”
Harden has been productive this season, averaging 21.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 8.3 assists, and 1.4 steals per game on 39.7% shooting from the field and 34.4% from three-point range. He’s one of only three players in the Western Conference averaging at least 20 points, five rebounds, and eight assists per game.
Powell’s case for All-Star selection
Norman Powell has been equally impactful, showcasing his offensive firepower. Powell is averaging 23.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.3 steals, and 3.5 made three-pointers per game on 49% shooting from the field and 43.1% from beyond the arc. He has scored 20+ points in 28 of the 37 games he has played this NBA season.

“I think I’ve been playing at an All-Star level all season,” Powell told ClutchPoints. “Honestly, I don’t like talking about myself, but numbers don’t lie—where I’m at, what I’m averaging, what I’m doing across the board, and the efficiency that I’m playing with. I see myself as an All-Star, I want to be an All-Star, and I think I am.”
As the Clippers continue to climb in the standings, the performances of Harden and Powell remain pivotal. Whether or not both players earn All-Star nods, their impact on the Clippers’ success this season is undeniable.
In a recent interview, Kawhi Leonard shared his thoughts on the upcoming NBA All-Star game, expressing his belief that James Harden and another one of his Clippers teammates deserve spots on the All-Star roster.Leonard praised Harden’s performance since joining the Clippers, highlighting his scoring ability and overall impact on the team. He also mentioned another teammate who he believes has been playing at an All-Star level but may not receive the recognition he deserves.
With the All-Star game fast approaching, Leonard’s endorsement of his teammates adds to the ongoing debate about who should be selected for the prestigious event. Fans will have to wait and see if Harden and his Clippers teammate ultimately earn their spots on the All-Star roster.

The Los Angeles Clippers were projected by many to finish among the worst teams in the Western Conference this season. After it was declared that Kawhi Leonard would miss the start of the season due to injury and Paul George departed to the Philadelphia 76ers, the Clippers roster appeared to be some role players with an aging James Harden.
Entering Thursday, the Clippers are sixth seed in the Western Conference and Leonard is coming off his season-high in points in a win over the San Antonio Spurs. To add on top of the positivity for Clippers fans, Harden made franchise history this evening following the All-Star reserves being announced.

After missing the All-Star game for the last two seasons, Harden has earned his 11th career appearance and first with the Clippers. Additionally, he becomes the oldest player in franchise history at 35 years old to make the All-Star game.

Clippers’ James Harden makes his 11th All-Star team – Orange County Register
James Harden didn’t need a campaign to state his case. He didn’t need sports pundits to plead as to why he belongs on the NBA All-Star roster. His résumé was convincing enough.
Harden earned his 11th nod to the NBA All-Star Game on Thursday as a Western Conference reserve, as selected by the league coaches. The game will be played Feb. 16 at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
Harden joins Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), Anthony Davis (Lakers), Jaren Jackson Jr. (Memphis Grizzlies), Alperen Şengün (Houston Rockets), Jalen Williams (Oklahoma City Thunder) and Victor Wembanyama (San Antonio Spurs) as the Western Conference reserves.
Clippers guard Norman Powell, who was seeking his first All-Star selection, was left off the list.
The Eastern Conference reserves are Jaylen Brown (Boston Celtics), Pascal Siakam (Indianapolis Pacers), Darius Garland and Evan Mobley (Cleveland Cavaliers), Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons), Damian Lillard (Milwaukee Bucks) and Tyler Herro (Miami Heat).
“It means a lot,” Harden said last week. “Just the work that I’ve put in individually and as a team. The accomplishments and my numbers are good enough. I’ve been on the other side where I led the league in assists and didn’t make it. So, it would be an honor to me. I would love to be a part of the team.”
Even at age 35, Harden is proving he’s not ready to call it a career. Through 44 games, he is averaging 21.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 8.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
He reached another milestone Wednesday, passing Rod Strickland for No. 13 on the NBA’s career assists list with 11 in a 128-116 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
He recently joined the elite company of Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan as the only players in NBA history to score 40 or more points 100 times. He dropped 40 points in a victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday for his 103rd 40+game.
“James is one of the smartest players I’ve ever coached,” said Bucks coach Doc Rivers, who coached Harden in Philadelphia.
Harden, though, said his accomplishments aren’t a big deal, a list that includes an NBA Most Valuable Player award (2018), being a three-time scoring champion (2018-20) and two-time assists leader (2017, 2023) and a Sixth Man of the Year award (2012).
“I just go out there and put the work in and it is what it is,” Harden said.
Powell, left off the initial All-Star reserves list despite averaging a team-high 24 points per game on 49.4% shooting, said what Harden does with a basketball is just shy of magical for the Clippers (27-20), who currently are sixth in the Western Conference.
“He’s a guy that makes a lot of stuff happen with the ball, making plays,” Powell said. “And the way teams guard us with him on the floor, with either me or him out, it gets a little difficult. But him, he’s such a ball-dominant guy that can get even better.
“We need him. What he sees on the floor, and I thought he had great leadership off the floor. He was talking to the guys, what he sees, how we can be better tonight.”

#Clippers #James #Harden #11th #AllStar #team #Orange #County #RegisterSan Antonio vs. Los Angeles, Final Score: Spurs fight back but Clippers pull away late, 116-128
Finally back home for the first time in 12 days, the Spurs were hoping to get back on the right foot after a rough few weeks. Unfortunately, they ran into a buzzsaw Clippers squad that is fully healthy and has Kawhi Leonard’s minutes restrictions loosened, allowing him to play in the fourth quarter. After a tight first half, it looked like there was a turd quarter in the making as the Spurs got down by 16. They fought back, even taking the lead a few times, but they just couldn’t keep the Clippers off the free throw or the offensive glass in the fourth quarter, eventually falling 128-116.
Victor Wembanyama led four Spurs in double figures with 23 points, 12 rebounds 4 assists and 3 blocks. Kawhi Leonard and Norman Powell scored 27 apiece for the Clippers, and Ivica Zubac had a 20-20 game with 21 points and 22 rebounds.
Observations
- First and foremost, the question on everyone’s mind heading into this game: would Spurs fans heed Gregg Popovich’s pleas from last season to stop booing Kawhi? The answer is no, they did not. He first touched the ball on their second offensive possession, and the boos began immediately and continued throughout. They weren’t the loudest they’ve ever been, but they were there.
- Mitch Johnson continued the approach of rolling with Jeremy Sochan as backup center, and that may remain the case for the foreseeable future with Johnson stating before the game that Stephon Castle would continue starting for the foreseeable future for developmental purposes. Then, when Sochan sits, Sandro Mamukelashvili briefly comes in alongside Wemby. Both players were everywhere and created a spark when they came in, with Sochan getting back-to-back steals on James Harden and Mamu getting a bucket and flying in for rebounds.
- Julian Champagnie’s biggest weakness may be his handles. Many of his turnovers lately seem to be unforced, and he had two such turnovers on consecutive possessions in the first quarter, first where he lost the ball out of bounds on the dribble, followed by failing to scoop up an (admittedly low pass) in transition, losing the ball off his leg despite having an open basket in front of him.
- Victor Wembanyama did not attempt a three-pointer in the first half, and the result was four shot attempts — the least of all five starters — plus four free throws for 9 points. People wonder why he takes so many threes, sometimes out of rhythm, and this is why: a lack of touches. He finally got going in the third quarter with a middy and three-pointer, as well as a series of blocks against Zubac, who shoved him to the floor out of frustration (with somehow no call). Let’s just say he briefly poked the bear (as in the Spurs as a whole) as it came amidst a 25-11 run to close the quarter that got them back into the game after they trailed by as much as 16, avoiding a “turd quarter”.
- The Clippers, namely Zubac, absolutely crushed the Spurs on boards with a 57-30 advantage in total rebounds, 17 of which were offensive rebounds, 13 of which belonged to Zubac. He had a field day down low, either taking advantage when the Clippers forced a switch and Wemby had to go out to defend a jumper or just straight up owning the boards when Wemby sat. The one area that kept the Spurs in the game was points off turnovers, getting 25 off the Clippers’ 17 while only coughing it up 10 times themselves. Unfortunately, the Clippers were too hot everywhere else to fully take advantage.
- Another classic Wemby stat to close out:
Victor Wembanyama now has 35 straight games with a block and a three – the longest streak in NBA history (previously 21 by Kristaps Porzingis).
Second-longest active streak: 6 (Brook Lopez)

The Spurs will return to the Frost Bank Center on Friday as the first part of a back-to-back ahead of the Rodeo Road Trip, beginning with the Milwaukee Bucks. Tip-off will be at 7:00 PM on FanDuel Sports Network.
The highly anticipated matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Clippers did not disappoint as both teams battled it out until the final buzzer. The Spurs fought back from an early deficit to make it a close game, but in the end, the Clippers pulled away late to secure a 128-116 victory. The game started off with the Clippers dominating on both ends of the court, taking an early lead behind the stellar play of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. However, the Spurs refused to back down and mounted a comeback in the second half, thanks to the strong performances from DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge.
Despite the Spurs’ best efforts, the Clippers proved to be too much to handle as they continued to hit shots and play stifling defense. Leonard and George continued to lead the charge for the Clippers, finishing with impressive stat lines and making key plays down the stretch to seal the win.
Overall, it was a hard-fought battle between two talented teams, but in the end, the Clippers came out on top with a 128-116 victory. Both teams showed why they are considered contenders in the Western Conference, and fans were treated to an exciting and competitive game from start to finish.
