Hawaiʻi Mayor Signs Emergency Proclamation Due To Storm, Update Closure List
(BIVN) – Hawaiʻi County Mayor Kimo Alameda signed an emergency proclamation Thursday, as severe weather approaches Hawaiʻi Island.

The Big Island already experienced a day of powerful wind gusts, as a powerful winter low pressure system drags a strong cold front from the northwest, down the island chain tonight and Friday. A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the entire island, as well as a Flood Watch. A Winter Storm Warning is in place for the summits of Maunakea and Mauna Loa.

“We urge our residents to stay prepared and take extra precaution as severe weather moves across the island,” Mayor Alameda stated in a news release. “Crews are working hard to ensure roadways are clear and to restore power to traffic intersections. We ask residents to remain off roadways if possible as weather conditions worsen and to stay connected to our emergency notifications.”

Alameda’s proclamation allows the County to “streamline its response and coordinate resources as heavy rainfall and high winds are expected,” the news release stated.

Seven emergency shelters are currently open:

- Kekuaokalani Gym

The FAA issued a ground stop for interisland flights to and from Honolulu earlier in the day, the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation reported. The order was slowly being lifted this afternoon, officials said.

The Hawaiʻi Judiciary reported the Keahuolū Courthouse in Kona, and the South Kohala District Court in Waimea were closed Thursday due to power and water outages. Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald issued an order extending the deadline for filing documents due on Thursday, January 30, 2025 by one day to January 31, 2025. Hearings or trials that had to be cancelled due to the closures will be rescheduled to the next available date, a Judiciary news release stated.

As of 6 p.m., Hawaiian Electric said it was working to restore power to approximately 54,000 customers on O‘ahu, Hawai‘i Island and Maui County who were affected by severe thunderstorms and powerful winds. Customers have been asked to plan for possible extended outages as the storm system makes its way across the state.

Ubisoft announces studio closure as it lays off 185 staff
Ubisoft is set to close its UK studio based in Leamington, as it sheds 185 jobs across the business.

A small number of Leamington staff will be retained under remote contracts. Additionally, Ubisoft offices in Düsseldorf (formerly Blue Byte), Stockholm and the Newcastle-based Ubisoft Reflections will be downsized.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to prioritise projects and reduce costs that ensure long-term stability at Ubisoft, we have announced targeted restructurings at Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm and Ubisoft Reflections and the permanent closure of Ubisoft Leamington site,” a Ubisoft spokesperson said in a statement to Eurogamer.

“Unfortunately, this should impact 185 employees overall. We are deeply grateful for their contributions and are committed to supporting them through this transition.”

Founded in 2002 as FreeStyleGames by a group of former Rare and Codemasters veterans, Ubisoft Leamington had most recently worked as a support studio on the Tom Clancy’s The Division series, and also assisted development on games such as Star Wars Outlaws, Skull and Bones and Far Cry 5.

In its heyday, under its previous ownership by Activision, Leamington was best known for its DJ Hero games, before it was put to work on the publisher’s Guitar Hero and Call of Duty franchises. Ubisoft then acquired the firm in 2017.

As for the teams that have been downsized, Ubisoft Düsseldorf is best known for developing Anno and The Settlers, while Ubisoft Stockholm most recently worked on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora with Massive Entertainment. Ubisoft Reflections, the veteran team originally founded in 1984 and acquired by Ubisoft in 2006, had been working closely with Leamington supporting AAA game development.

Ubisoft’s latest layoffs come as the company continues to try and cut costs after a string of disappointing game launches including the failure of big budget bet Star Wars Outlaws, the shutdown of live-service shooter XDefiant, and repeated delays to Assassin’s Creed Shadows amidst wider concern for the firm’s future.

Ubisoft has repeatedly reduced its headcount since 2022, when it employed 20,279 people. By the end of September 2024, Ubisoft employed 18,666.

Earlier this month, Ubisoft said it was “taking decisive steps” to reshape the company, in order to “review and pursue various transformational strategic and capitalistic options to extract the best value for stakeholders”.

Reports previously suggested Ubisoft was keen to take the company private via investment from Chinese giant Tencent, although company boss Yves Guillemot wanting to retain overall control has allegedly proven a sticking point. All eyes now turn to the upcoming launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows on 20th March, whose success has never seemed more vital.

Residents and families protest Norse Home closure in Seattle
With just five months to go until the Norse Home is set to close its doors, residents and their families held a protest in hopes of preventing the closure.

SEATTLE — The Norse Home, a senior assisted-living facility in Seattle, is set to shut its doors in June. However, residents and their families are doing everything they can to stop the closure.

On Saturday, a protest was held outside of the Norse Home. The goal of the protest was to raise awareness about the closure and garner support so that the remaining residents don’t have to move.

“This is probably one of the last, if not the last of the true nonprofits that have a Medicaid contract,” Lisa Satin, a senior housing advisor, said. “I want people to pay attention to what happens when we get older.”

Satin said it’s already a difficult process to find affordable housing for seniors and if the Norse Home closes, it will make options even more limited.

“We’d like to inform people of the nonprofit that calls themselves a nonprofit who is taking this building to turn it into a community for wealthy people when they could really take the building and remodel it like they’re going to do and get the DSHS to house seniors that need assisted living at a good price,” Satin said.

Transforming Age, the nonprofit that runs the Norse Home, announced the closure in the fall of 2024. The organization told residents it would be a temporary closure.

However, KING 5 discovered the organization had already submitted plans to the city of Seattle to change the building’s use and occupancy. The proposed plans would change the building from its existing 130 units to just 32 units.

Houston airport closure: Hobby and Bush Intercontinental Airports both reopen Wednesday following winter storm

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston’s airports reopened on Wednesday morning after being closed all day Tuesday thanks to a winter storm that left Houston covered in snow.

ABC13 was live from an empty Hobby Airport on Wednesday morning. The TSA security check at the normally bustling airport was scheduled to reopen at 9 a.m.

Still, ABC13 cameras saw travelers going through around 6:30 a.m. An airport employee said they were letting guests through early.

Fights were scheduled to begin taking off from both Bush and Hobby airports at 11 a.m.

Pooja Lodhia takes her role as a hands-on reporter very seriously. So when Houston got historic snowfall, it only made sense that she would join right in the fun!

The Houston Airport Systems director says they’ve been working to make sure the roads and runways are good to go and said they made the decision to open at 9 a.m. instead of, say, 5 a.m. to give time for the sun to come out and for road conditions to improve.

ABC13 spoke to a man on Tuesday who was waiting for the airports to reopen because he was trying to go visit his sick friend.

“I want to be in Baltimore for my friend. I told her I would be there. I made a promise. I’ve got to get there for her,” Donnie Ray said.

Houston Airport System Director Jim Szczesniak told ABC13 that operations were running as expected after restarting operations.

“We’ve got all the runways open at both airports,” he said. “The ground transportation is there. The TSA is here. The customs officers are here making sure we can process, so all the pieces of the puzzle we need to put together to operate the airports are here.”

The airport used deicing pellets and liquid to keep the runways and roads clear of ice and snow, and according to Szczesniak, everything went according to their preparations.

“We’re happy because the plan that we wanted, we executed it,” he said. “It did not trap people here on Monday. It was Tuesday. Fight the storm so we could open on Wednesday. We opened (Wednesday) morning, and operations are basically back to normal.”

If you have a flight on Wednesday, you should double-check with your airline. Even though the airports are back open, there are still about 500 flights between Bush and Hobby that have been canceled on Wednesday.
