Well it’s the last lazy Sunday of 2024 and I am all for making good use of it. Order takeout. Watch one of the new shows or movies that are out this weekend. Give into your laziness and skip out on the chores. It’s still the holiday season, after all. All the tasks can wait until Monday. Then it’s all preparation for New Year’s Eve and whatever fun festivities you have planned.

And, of course, we have a Wordle to solve. Let’s solve it!

    How To Solve Today’s Wordle

    The Hint: Music.

The Clue: This Wordle has a double letter.

PLANE is normally a pretty good starting guess, but today it let me down. With 200 remaining possible solutions and one meager yellow box, I had many words to cut. I’m not sure if TAROT was the best choice, but it did slash that number down to just 5, and secured a green box and a second vowel. MACHO removed every possible solution but one: MAMBO for the win!

    Competitive Wordle Score

A total wash today. 0 points for guessing in four and 0 for tying the Bot. Zeroes all around.

    How To Play Competitive Wordle

    • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
    • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
    • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
    • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

    Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “mambo” originates from the Kikongo language of Central Africa, where “mambo” means “conversation” or “word.” It was brought to the Caribbean through the African diaspora, blending into Afro-Cuban culture. In Cuban music, mambo evolved to describe a musical style and dance that emerged in the 1940s, characterized by syncopated rhythms and energetic movements.

ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1287 Hints, Clues And Answer For Friday, December 27th

Back when I was a kid, the days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve were a kind of magical time. School was out. There was always snow on the ground. There was always lots of good food and family gatherings and extra time to spend with new toys.

Now, I find myself wading through a kind of winter melancholy each year around this time. A week of mild gloom. It’s almost like a spiritual Christmas hangover. All that anticipation and build-up leading to the Big Day and then it’s over, wrapping paper littering the floor. Back to work. Back to life. Back to this liminal week wedged and contorted between two of the year’s biggest holidays.

And a Wordle to solve, of course. Shall we?

    How To Solve Today’s Wordle

    The Hint: Publicly denounce.

GRADE did much better than I expected it to, leaving me with just 49 remaining possible solutions and three yellow boxes. I tried juggling those with CIDER, but they all came back yellow, with a new yellow ‘C’ in the mix. Fortunately, only one solutioned remained and eventually I tracked it down. DECRY for the win!

    Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “decry” comes from the Old Frenchdescrier, meaning “to cry out, announce, or denounce.” This, in turn, derives from the prefix des- (meaning “down” or “away”) and crier (meaning “to cry or proclaim”). In English, by the late 16th century, decry took on the meaning of publicly condemning or criticizing something.

Today’s ‘Wordle’ #1286 Hints, Clues And Answer For Thursday, December 26th

Looking for Wednesday’s Wordle hints, clues and answer? You can find them here:

ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1284 Hints, Clues And Answer For Tuesday, December 24th

Christmas has come and gone. It’s always a little bittersweet. So much anticipation in the lead-up to Christmas, and then it comes and we open our presents and listen to the music and then it’s over. But we still have New Year’s Eve to look forward to!

Yesterday, I gave you a Wordle Wednesday riddle and it was a pretty tough one! Today, I’ll give you the answer. Here was the riddle:

The answer is 50. There’s a complicated mathematical way to solve this, but I’ll just explain the numbers. If the first elf takes half the pile—25—and adds 3, you get 28. The second elf takes half of what’s left—11—and adds 3, you get 14. 14 + 28 = 42. The third elf does the same, taking half of 8—4—and adding 3. That’s 7. 42 + 7 = 49. One present is left for Santa, which leaves us with 50.

    And that’s all folks! Have a great rest of 2024! Now let’s solve this Wordle . . . .

I was lucky with my first guess today. I’ve used FLARE a number of times in the past, but it was better than ever today, leaving me with just 5 possible solutions. MAFIA was the best second guess I could have come up with—I never would have guessed the answer on #2—and left me with just 1 possible solution: AFFIX for the win. That’s a tough Wordle!

    Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and another point for beating the Bot, who took four tries today. 2 points for me!

    Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “affix” comes from the Latin affixus, the past participle of affigere, meaning “to fasten to”. This is derived from ad- (meaning “to” or “toward”) and figere (meaning “to fasten” or “fix”). The term entered Middle English in the late 15th century, retaining the sense of attaching or adding something.
