Students around the Louisville metro did not have to go out in single-digit temperatures Wednesday morning. Most school districts in the region opted for nontraditional instruction, including Jefferson County Public Schools.
JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan said the decision to close schools was made “with the safety and well-being of our students in mind, as they would be waiting at bus stops and walking to school in extremely cold conditions.” Officials were also concerned about facilities encountering problems due to the frigid weather.

JCPS

School athletic events and extracurricular activities will continue as planned, as temperatures are expected to warm in the afternoon.
Bullitt County Public Schools
Students with Bullitt County Public Schools have a nontraditional instruction day Wednesday due to the cold weather, the district announced Tuesday evening.
“These conditions make early bus routes unsafe for drivers and students, and large facilities like our schools often face challenges keeping spaces warm during extreme cold,” officials said in a statement.
Shelby County Public Schools
Students in Shelby County Public Schools have nontraditional instruction Wednesday, the district announced on social media.
Spencer County Public Schools
Students in Spencer County Public Schools have nontraditional instruction Wednesday, the school district announced.
“After consulting with the National Weather Service and considering the potential for hazardous weather conditions, including a Cold Weather Advisory for temperatures in the single digits below zero, and the risk of unsafe conditions in subzero temperatures Spencer County Schools will implement NTI Day #3 on Wednesday, January 22, 2025,” a statement read.
The Tiger Cub Village is open Wednesday.
Hardin County Schools
Hardin County Schools in on a 2-hour delay Wednesday, the district announced on social media. Bus pick-up will also start two hours later than normal.
“This delay will allow us to start the process of picking up students when the sun is up, allowing us to see any slick roadways,” the district said in a statement. “It also allows our transportation team the time it may need to resolve any mechanical issues.”
Kentucky School for the Blind
Kentucky School for the Blind officials announced the school will operate on a 2-hour delay Wednesday. Students can arrive as early as 9:15 a.m. No JCPS transportation will be provided.

Attention Louisville-area families: Due to the extreme cold weather conditions, Jefferson County Public Schools and other surrounding districts will be implementing Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) for students. This means that students will be completing their schoolwork remotely from home.
While we understand that this may be an inconvenience, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. We encourage all families to stay warm and stay safe during this chilly weather.
Please check your school’s website or social media pages for more information on how to access and complete NTI assignments. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this time. Stay warm, Louisville! #JCPS #NTI #StaySafeLouisville
