  • Phoenix-area under freeze warning overnight due to bitter cold temps

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — It was a chilly start to our morning on Tuesday with lows in the lower 40s and some areas in the Valley dropping down into the mid-30s. And even colder temperatures are on the way for the deserts of the state.

This afternoon we will see a high of 61 degrees, which is 7 degrees below our average.

Expect to see even colder temperatures tomorrow morning with lows near freezing around the Valley. We have declared a First Alert Weather Day for Wednesday because the National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning until 9 a.m. tomorrow.

After our cold morning, we will start to see warmer temperatures move into the Valley. Wednesday’s high will be in the upper 60s.

Even warmer weather is expected Thursday through Saturday, with highs in the lower 70s.

Another storm system will bring a chance of light rain here in the Valley and some snow in the High Country. The expected timing on this will be Saturday night through Sunday evening, but we will have a better grasp on what to expect as we get closer.

  • Wet and cold conditions linger for the Gulf Coast

Wet and cold conditions linger for the Gulf Coast

Scattered rain will impact the Gulf Coast overnight and throughout Wednesday.

THAT’S THE VERY LATEST IN TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA. AIR FOR US. BACK TO YOU. IT’S PUT HAVE. YEAH, A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE IN AND THEN THOSE OF US THAT ARE ORIGINALLY FROM AREAS THAT IT SNOWS. YOU THINK, AL, I’M HEADED OUT TO BUT IT’S NOT THE SAME ROAD CONDITIONS BECAUSE WE DON’T SALT THE ROADS. WE DON’T TREAT THE ROADS. SO IT SAYS IT’S SO MUCH MORE DANGEROUS AND YOU GO OUT THERE THINKING, OH, YOU JUST GOTTA. >> GO SLOW. KNOW YOU’RE GOING TO SLIDE LEAST I’M GLAD WE’RE NOT DEALING WITH IT, BUT IT IS KIND OF NICE. IT’S THOSE KIDS UP IN THE PANHANDLE. I MEAN, HAVING SO MUCH TO MUCH. I’VE SUCH A CORE MEMORY OF THE BLIZZARD OF 92 IS KIND OF WHAT GOT ME INTERESTED IN WHETHER TO BEGIN SO I’M SURE THEY’RE JUST KIND OF HAVING THE TIME OF THEIR LIFE UP. THERE’S HOPEFULLY IT WON’T SAVE THE ONE THING THAT’S INTERESTING AND COULD BE PRETTY DANGEROUS GOING FORWARD AS THE TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO BE SLOW TO RISE. THEY DON’T GET INTO THE 40’S UNTIL THURSDAY. NOW THEY WILL SEE A LOT OF SUNSHINE TOMORROW, BUT THAT SNOW MIGHT BE SLOW TO MELT AT LEASE, ESPECIALLY IN SOME GRASSY AREA. SO HOPEFULLY THOSE ROAD CONDITIONS CAN START TO GET BETTER AND IMPROVE. SO PEOPLE GET BACK ON THE ROAD SAFELY AND GET TO WHERE THEY NEED TO BE GIVEN ANY EMERGENCIES OR JUST MAYBE FOR SOME GROCERIES. ALL RIGHT. HERE’S THE LATEST ON RADAR. SO THE SNOW WILL START TO TAPER OFF IN FLORIDA BY TOMORROW MORNING. IT’S THAT PINK STUFF THAT THAT FREEZING RAIN WHEN FREEZES ON CONTACT ON THE GROUND. THAT’S THE MESSY STUFF. BUT THEN ONCE YOU HEAD SOUTH OF GAME, GAINESVILLE. IT’S ALL RAIN. WE ARE GOING TO HAVE SOME PRETTY CHILLY WEATHER TOMORROW MORNING. TOMORROW WILL BE BLUSTERY IN THE MORNING. COLD WEATHER MOVING ON IN TEMPERATURES START TO MODERATE. BUT THEN WE GET ANOTHER COLD BLAST OF AIR BY SATURDAY MORNING. THAT WILL BE OUR COLDEST MORNING OF THIS SEASON SO FAR. WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AT THOSE NUMBERS COMING UP IN JUST A MOMENT. SO FOR TONIGHT WILL DROP DOWN INTO THE UPPER 40’S ALREADY SEEING THE 40’S IN SOME AREAS. AND THEN BY THE AFTERNOON TOMORROW WILL INCREASE BUT NOT MUCH WERE HEADED TO JUST SHY OF 60 DEGREES FOR THE AFTERNOON TOMORROW MORNING. WE ARE GONNA HAVE TEMPERATURES FEELING INTO THE 30’S FOR DESOTO COUNTY. THAT’S WHY THAT COLD WEATHER ADVISORY IS IN PLACE FOR DESOTO COUNTY AND DESOTO COUNTY. ONLY WITH THAT WIND FACTORED IN. IT’S GOING TO FEEL IT ABOUT 36 DEGREES WITH WINDS GUSTING UP TO SAY 20 MILES PER HOUR THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS. AS FAR AS RAIN IS CONCERNED, LIGHT RAIN THROUGH 3, 5 O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING OR THAT KIND OF SCATTERED SHOWERS FOR THE MORNING. I WAS EVEN UP THROUGH ABOUT 8.30. IF YOU’RE ON THE ROADS TOMORROW MORNING. EXPECT THINGS TO BE ON THE SLIPPERY SIDE AND CHILLY AND BREEZY. IT’S NOT VERY COMFORTABLE. THAT’S FOR SURE. BY 11 O’CLOCK. A LOT OF THOSE SHOWERS START TO MOVE FARTHER TO THE SOUTH. SO LITTLE OPPOSITE OF WHAT HAPPENED TODAY TODAY, THE SHOWERS MOVED OFF TO THE NORTH TOMORROW. THEY’RE GOING TO MOVE OFF TO THE SOUTH, DRIER BY WEDNESDAY NIGHT, STILL CLOUDY AND CHILLY. WE GET A FEW MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR RAIN ON THURSDAY, BUT JUST NOT AS MANY AS WHAT WE’LL HAVE FOR TOMORROW. SO SOME NEEDED RAIN FOR TOMORROW. IT’S JUST UNCOMFORTABLE. RAIN FOR SURE. HERE’S A LOOK AT THE CURRENT TEMPERATURES ARE MOVING ON IN WITH THAT COLD AIR. IT’S ONLY 47 DEGREES IN ARCADIA SAYS THAT FRONT EDGE OF THAT COLD AIR PUSHING ON IN. IT’S STILL INTO THE 60’S. NOT TOO BAD FOR MARCO ISLAND ARE GOLDEN GATE. BUT TOMORROW AGAIN, NOTICE SOME CHANGES. HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT TOMORROW MORNING 46. WE START TO INCREASE THE OVERNIGHT LOWS FOR THURSDAY. THEN COLD AIR IS REINFORCED BY ANOTHER COLD FRONT. WE ARE DRIER ON FRIDAY, BUT IT’S SATURDAY MORNING. I WANT TO BRING YOUR ATTENTION TO. WE COULD HAVE SOME FROST AROUND THE REGION, WIDESPREAD FROST. SO JUST KEEP THAT IN MIND. THEN THE WARM-UP BEGINS. ONCE WE GET PAST SATURDAY MORNING, TEMPERATURES WILL START TO INCREASE DURING THE AFTERNOON AND AT NIGHT AS WELL BY MONDAY AND TUESDAY MORNING, WE’RE ALREADY APPROACHING YOUR 80 DEGREES BY THE AFTERNOON WITH ABOVE AVERAGE OVERNIGHT LOWS TOMORROW MORNING. 43 IN ARCADIA FEELING INTO THE MID 30’S MID TO UPPER 40’S FOR AREAS ELSEWHERE. BUT THEY HAVE TO NOON TOMORROW. 58 AGAIN IS PRETTY GUSTY IN THE MORNING. A LITTLE BIT QUIETER FOR THE AFTERNOON, BUT CLOUDY, BREEZY HIGH TEMPERATURES AT 58. THESE ARE NOT NORMAL NUMBERS, NOT NORMAL CONDITIONS FOR FLORIDA’S SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, THE GULF COAST AND SPECIFICALLY THE PANHANDLE TO WHEN DOES THE SUMMER TERM FRIDAY. WE’LL SEE A LOT MORE SUNSHINE ON FRIDAY. SURPRISED WE SEE A LITTLE BIT OF SUNSHINE HERE THERE ON THURSDAY, BUT MORE SO FOR FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND. BUT WHAT A TURNAROUND SUNDAY WITH 75 DEGREES BY THE AFTERNOON.

As winter continues to grip the Gulf Coast, residents are facing persistent wet and cold conditions. From Texas to Florida, heavy rain showers and chilly temperatures have become the norm, making outdoor activities a challenge.

The combination of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and cold air from the north has created a recipe for dreary weather along the coast. Flash flooding and slick roads have become a common occurrence, causing delays and disruptions for commuters.

Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, residents are finding ways to stay warm and dry. From cozying up by the fireplace to bundling up in layers, Gulf Coast residents are adapting to the chilly weather.

As we wait for warmer days to return, it’s important to stay informed and prepared for any weather-related challenges that may arise. Stay safe and stay dry, Gulf Coast friends!

  • Allegheny County courts, many schools to close again Wednesday due to cold weather

Allegheny County Common Pleas Courts will be closed again Wednesday, as will Pittsburgh Municipal Court, due to severe and hazardous cold weather conditions, court officials said

For the second day in a row, President Judge Susan Evashavik DiLucente has ordered the closure of all divisions of the county Common Pleas Court and all Magisterial District Courts, as well as the municipal court, according to a statement Tuesday.

Arraignment Court, however, will remain open for those proceedings. Emergency protection-from-abuse orders can be obtained at Arraignment Court, 600 First Avenue, Downtown.

Allegheny County offices also will be partially closed, and non-essential county employees equipped with technology to work at home will be expected to do so, county officials said.

Also Wednesday, schools throughout the region will hold classes online or suspend school altogether as a polar vortex continues to bring single-digit temperatures.

Students at Pittsburgh Public Schools again will follow their regular class schedules for remote, synchronous learning Wednesday. The district has canceled all transportation, and staff will work remotely.

The National Weather Service has issued a cold-weather advisory for Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, east-central Ohio and northern West Virginia due to low temperatures and below-zero wind-chill temperatures.

The NWS forecast for Wednesday calls for scattered snow showers between 3-8 p.m. with about a half-inch of accumulation. The weather service predicts a high temperature of 13 degrees and wind-chill temperatures as low as -14 degrees.

The high temperature for Wednesday is expected to hit 12 degrees, with wind-chill values as low as -16 degrees, before falling to a low of 4 degrees at night.

Wind chills from 15 to 20 degrees below zero are dangerously low, causing frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes and hypothermia with prolonged exposure, the NWS said in its advisory.

People who must go outside are urged to use caution and wear appropriate clothing, including hats and gloves. Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible, the NWS said.

Temperatures in the region are expected to rise somewhat Thursday, with a high of 26 degrees and a low Thursday night around 15 degrees, according to the weather service.

Jillian Forstadt of WESA contributed to this report.

Allegheny County courts, many schools to close again Wednesday due to cold weather

Due to the frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chills forecasted for Wednesday, many schools and courts in Allegheny County will be closed once again. The extreme cold poses a significant risk to students, staff, and residents, prompting officials to prioritize safety and well-being.

Parents are encouraged to stay updated on school closures and delays through their school district’s communication channels. Additionally, individuals with court appearances scheduled for Wednesday are advised to contact the appropriate courthouse for further instructions.

While the closures may disrupt schedules and routines, the safety of students and employees remains the top priority. It is important for everyone to take precautions in this severe weather and stay warm indoors. Stay safe, stay warm, and stay informed.

  • Marion County nursery prepares their plants for a cold week

OCALA, Fla. — As winter weather moves across the southeast and Florida, Marion County is preparing for some cold temperatures this week.

    What You Need To Know

    • Feel like temperatures in Marion County will dip into the lower 20s Tuesday night with even colder weather coming by Friday
    • Landscapers at Tower Hill Nursery spent much of Tuesday rolling out plastic over their plants to protect them from the cold weather
    • Experts say homeowners in Marion County should cover their ferns, sensitive flowers, perennials and their robellini palms

Forecasters expect the feels like temperatures in Ocala will be in the lower 20s heading into Wednesday with even colder weather expected by Friday.

Tower Hill Nursery owner Ryan Mims is moving fast to protect plants due to the cold snaps.

“As soon as we hear about bad weather or cold snaps, we have to make sure everything is covered. So, it usually takes a day of preparation,” said Mims, who has been landscaping most of his life.

He says several of the plants that will be covered include ferns, sensitive flowers, perennials and robellini palms.

Mims says he waters them a sufficient amount as well to keep them warm under the plastic.

As for the snow a bit further north, Mims had one thing to say.

“My thoughts about this snow is that I hope it stays away,” he said. “We are Florida, and we are known as the sunshine state. Turn around and go back.”

As temperatures drop in Marion County, local nurseries are taking steps to protect their plants from the impending cold snap. One such nursery, located in the heart of the county, is busy preparing their inventory for the chilly week ahead.

With forecasts predicting temperatures to dip below freezing, the nursery staff are working diligently to ensure that their plants are well taken care of. This includes moving sensitive plants indoors, covering delicate varieties with frost cloth, and applying a protective layer of mulch to insulate the roots.

“We want to make sure that our plants are well-equipped to handle the cold weather,” says the nursery owner. “By taking these preventative measures, we can help minimize any potential damage to our inventory and keep our plants healthy and thriving.”

Customers are encouraged to also take precautions with their own plants at home, by bringing in any potted plants or covering them with blankets or towels. Taking these steps can help prevent frost damage and ensure that your plants survive the cold weather.

As Marion County braces for the cold week ahead, local nurseries like this one are doing their part to protect their plants and keep them in top condition. By taking these proactive measures, they are ensuring that their inventory remains healthy and vibrant for customers to enjoy.

  • This Central Florida school district cancels outdoor after-school activities due to cold weather

OCALA, Fla. – Marion County Public Schools on Tuesday canceled outdoor after-school activities as the area braces for colder weather sweeping across Central Florida.

On Tuesday, the district posted on Facebook that outdoor activities were canceled due to “predicted colder weather.” Those cancellations run from Tuesday through Thursday.

However, the district assured that schools would still remain open despite the “wintery weather.” Indoor after-school activities will also remain as scheduled.

“Other Marion County school districts in other states have canceled classes, but your Marion County Public Schools here in Florida will remain open on regular schedules,” a release from the district reads.

According to the district, P.E. classes and recess will be moved indoors.

In addition, the release urges parents to dress students who ride the bus in additional layers to protect them from the cold temperatures, and drivers are asked to be “extra cautious,” especially if the region sees freezing rains overnight.

“Should conditions change and impact school schedules, we will share that information with additional Skylert messaging,” the release continues. “For now, stay safe and stay warm.”

Central Florida will see widespread, scattered showers through the day Tuesday and overnight into early Wednesday. Many locations across Central Florida could rack up drought-denting rainfall with accumulations between 1-2 inches.

Tuesday night, the north winds will bring even colder air, dropping lows to the mid to upper 30s north and west of Orlando, with low 40s along the I-4 corridor.

A Cold Weather Advisory is already in effect for Marion and Flagler counties, with a chance of it being extended further south.

With the mix of rain and freezing temperatures, there will be a slight chance we could see some sleet mix in with the rain over the far northern areas (Marion, Flagler counties) late Tuesday night, though no accumulation is expected.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Marion County starting overnight Wednesday morning.

As a result, several districts have already canceled school or shifted to distance learning in anticipation of the “dangerously cold temperatures.”

Many are also canceling school-sponsored programs. For a complete list of closures and delays, click here.

“Our commitment is to keep families, staff and the community informed of weather-related school closings and cancellations,” said the SPPS district in a news release.

Anoka-Hennepin, the state’s largest school district, also announced it would be closed on Tuesday, saying the decision was made for the “safety of the students and staff.”

According to KARE 11 meteorologist Jamie Kagol, this recent Arctic blast is due to a polar vortex in the region.

“We live on this big blue marble called Earth and at the top and the bottom you have spinning air — a vortex — and that air at the top and bottom, North and South Pole, is very cold,” explained Kagol. “So that’s your polar vortex. That’s what the polar vortex is.”
