The Colorado Buffalos (9-11, 0-9) take on the TCU Horned Frogs (10-10, 3-6) on Sunday, February 2, at 3 pm CT. Here are some key players on the Colorado team that TCU fans should know before the game.

    #3 Julian Hammond III

    Guard from Denver, Colorado. Senior

The senior guard is the undisputed leader of the Buffaloes’ roster, leading the team in both scoring and assists. Despite the team’s struggles this season, he has been a consistent bright spot, showcasing his ability as both a playmaker and a scorer. His vision and skill allow him to orchestrate the offense effectively, creating opportunities for himself and his teammates. If TCU wants to disrupt Colorado’s game plan, they must focus on limiting his impact and forcing the Buffaloes to find other scoring options.

    #6 Trevor Baskin

    Forward from Arvada, Colorado. Senior

The 6-foot-9 forward may not be the most dominant offensive threat, but he makes his presence felt with strong defense and relentless rebounding on both ends of the floor. His physicality and effort allow him to compete for every board, and he has the ability to finish tough shots in the lane. He will look to outwork Ernest Udeh on the glass, making rebounding a key battle in this matchup. TCU must match his intensity and stay aggressive to prevent him from controlling the boards and creating second-chance opportunities.

The Colorado Buffaloes may not always be at the top of the rankings, but they are a formidable opponent in college basketball. As we prepare to face off against them, it’s important to know our foe and what they bring to the court.

The Buffaloes are known for their strong defense, led by head coach Tad Boyle. They have a physical and aggressive style of play that can disrupt their opponents’ offensive flow. Their ability to force turnovers and limit second-chance opportunities makes them a tough team to score against.

Offensively, Colorado is a well-rounded team with multiple scoring threats. Guard McKinley Wright IV is a dynamic playmaker who can score in a variety of ways, while forward Jabari Walker has emerged as a key contributor in the frontcourt. The Buffaloes also excel at moving the ball and finding open looks from beyond the arc.

As we prepare to take on Colorado, we must be ready for a tough and physical battle. We need to be disciplined on defense, limit turnovers, and execute on offense to come out on top. Knowing our foe and their strengths will be crucial in securing a victory against the Buffaloes. Let’s bring our A-game and show them what we’re made of on the court. #GoTeamGo #KnowYourFoe #BeatColoradoBasketball

Colorado vs TCU College Basketball Betting Preview

Will the Buffaloes ever win a conference game? They’re turning the ball over at an obscene rate (23%, per KenPom), fouling everyone (42% free-throw rate allowed, per KenPom) and doing a poor job cleaning the glass, resulting in a nearly impossible shot-volume disadvantage.

They’ve been a tad unlucky, with conference opponents hitting a whopping 36% of their 3s.

TCU has been an up-and-down team all year, recording wins over Xavier, BYU and Baylor en route to 10 wins and 10 losses. The Frogs are trending down at the moment, as losers of three straight.

They’ve been similarly unlucky in conference play, hitting only 29% of their 3s.

However, it’s tough to win games when you rank among the bottom three in the Big 12 in 2-point shooting (47%) and 2-point shooting allowed (57%).

All that said, the Frogs should be able to score here. They run an up-tempo secondary-motion offense, and the Buffaloes don’t defend well in transition or against handoff and off-ball screen actions.

Meanwhile, Colorado plays almost exclusively through the post, which’ll be tough against TCU’s compact post-denial defense.

The Buffs will win a game eventually, but I’m not betting on that happening here.

The Colorado Buffaloes will take on the TCU Horned Frogs in a highly anticipated college basketball matchup on Sunday, February 2. Both teams are coming off strong performances and will be looking to secure a crucial win in this game.

The odds for this matchup are currently in favor of the Colorado Buffaloes, who are the higher-ranked team and have been playing exceptional basketball as of late. However, the TCU Horned Frogs are known for their tenacity and could potentially pull off an upset in this game.

In terms of picks and predictions, it is expected to be a close and competitive game. The Buffaloes have a strong offense led by star player McKinley Wright IV, while the Horned Frogs have a solid defense that could pose a challenge for Colorado.

Ultimately, I predict that the Colorado Buffaloes will come out on top in a hard-fought battle against TCU. The Buffaloes have the talent and experience to secure a win in this game, but the Horned Frogs could make it interesting. It will be a game to watch for all college basketball fans.

  • Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs Philadelphia Flyers (1:00 p.m. MST)

The Avs come into this contest coming off of a dominating performance against the Blues, scoring four goals in the first period, including the first goal in an Avs sweater for Martin Necas in his home debut. The speed Necas plays with has meshed seamlessly in the Avs system so far, and a rapport with Nathan MacKinnon is quickly forming.

As for today, the recipe for success should look the same as it did on Friday night. The Avs weren’t afraid to shoot the puck, and were rewarded early and often on the scoresheet. The Blues simply could not keep up. With this being the final time the Avs will play on front of the Avs faithful until February 26th, the Avs should be ready to come out flying and put on another show for the fans.

Cale Makar and Scott Wedgewood were absent from practice on Saturday. Makar, who blocked a shot with his foot against the Dallas Stars on January 18th, has seemingly been managing that issue ever since, so this should be nothing more than maintenance for the Avs star defenseman.

Conversely, Wedgewood’s situation is a mystery. He has not appeared in game action in 8 days, last playing in Boston against the Bruins to open the Avs recent road trip. Additionally, Trent Miner was recalled from the Colorado Eagles yesterday, so the signs point towards Wedgewood being a scratch today.

As is the case with matinee affairs, the Avs won’t have a morning skate prior to the start of the game, so lineups will be confirmed in warmups.

    Projected Lineup

    Artturi Lehkonen (62) — Nathan MacKinnon (29) — Martin Necas (88)

    Jonathan Drouin (27) — Casey Mittelstadt (37) — Juuso Parssinen (16)

    Miles Wood (28) — Jack Drury (18) — Ross Colton (20)

    Joel Kiviranta (94) — Parker Kelly (17) — Logan O’Connor (25)

    Devon Toews (7) — Cale Makar (8)

    Samuel Girard (49) — Josh Manson (42)

    Keaton Middleton (67) — Sam Malinski (70)

    Mackenzie Blackwood (39)

  • Game Preview: Colorado Avalanache look to close out road trip on a high note on Long Island vs. New York Islanders

After what has certainly been a hectic weekend and road trip for the Colorado Avalanche, they’ll take on the New York Islanders tonight before heading back home. This will be the second and final regular-season matchup between these two teams, with the Islanders winning the first game by a final score of 6-2.

    Colorado Avalanche

As previously mentioned, this past weekend and road trip have been nothing short of hectic for this Avalanche team. On Friday evening, the team traded for Mikko Rantanen. In that trade, the Avs also welcomed Martin Necas and Jack Drury to the team, both of whom scored points on Sunday.

Colorado comes into this game off of a thrilling win over the New York Rangers, which saw Artturi Lehkonen end the game for the Avs in regulation with just seconds left in the third period. They’ll need to give that same effort here tonight against the Isles.

    Projected Lineup

Jonathan Drouin – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas
Juuso Parssinen – Casey Mittelstadt – Artturi Lehkonen
Ross Colton – Jack Drury – Miles Wood
Joel Kiviranta – Parker Kelly – Logan O’Connor

    Devon Toews – Cale Makar
    Samuel Girard – Josh Manson
    Keaton Middleton – Sam Malinski

    New York Islanders

The Isles are hot right now, as they’re currently riding a four-game win streak, with their most recent victory being against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Despite being seventh in the Metropolitan Division, the Eastern Conference playoffs race is so tight that the Isles are still technically in the mix with other teams. If they want to make a genuine push and make the playoffs this year, they need to keep winning games right now to keep pace with all the other teams trying to make it in.

    Projected Lineup

Anders Lee – Bo Horvat – Mathew Barzal
Anthony Duclair – Brock Nelson – Kyle Pulmieri
Casey Cizikas – Jean-Gabriel Pageau – Simon Holmstrom
Maxim Tsyplakov – Kyle Maclean – Marc Gatcomb

    Adam Pelech – Scott Mayfield
    Alexander Romanov – Tony DeAngelo
    Isaiah George – Dennis Cholowsky

    Goaltenders

Tonight, it will likely be Mackenzie Blackwood against Ilya Sorokin. Blackwood played well for the Avs on Sunday against the Rangers. He’ll need to be sharp again tonight to help the Avs secure another two points and end the road trip on a high note.

The Colorado Avalanche are set to wrap up their road trip with a showdown against the New York Islanders on Long Island. After a strong start to the season, the Avalanche have hit a bit of a rough patch and will be looking to get back on track with a win over the Islanders.

The Avalanche will be facing a tough test in the Islanders, who are currently sitting near the top of the standings in the Eastern Conference. The Islanders have been playing some solid hockey as of late and will be a formidable opponent for the Avalanche.

Key players to watch in this matchup include Avalanche stars Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, who have been leading the charge offensively for the team. On the other side, the Islanders will be relying on the likes of Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee to generate offense and shut down the Avalanche’s top players.

With both teams hungry for a win, this game is sure to be a thrilling and competitive battle. Will the Avalanche be able to close out their road trip on a high note with a win over the Islanders? Tune in to find out!

Arizona came out firing on all cylinders, building an early lead and never looking back. The Wildcats’ offense was firing on all cylinders, with multiple players stepping up to contribute.

Guard John Smith led the way for Arizona with 20 points, while forward Sarah Johnson added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Wildcats’ defense was also impressive, holding the Buffaloes to just 63 points and forcing numerous turnovers.

Colorado fought hard throughout the game, but ultimately couldn’t keep up with Arizona’s high-powered offense. Guard Emily Williams led the Buffaloes with 18 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Wildcats’ strong performance.

With the win, Arizona improved to 15-2 on the season and solidified their position as one of the top teams in the country. The Wildcats will look to continue their winning ways as they push towards the postseason.

  • Spectator killed after hammer reportedly goes out of bounds at high school track and field meet in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A spectator at a high school track and field meet was killed after an athlete’s hammer reportedly went out of bounds Sunday morning.

UCCS, which hosted the meet, said it was heartbroken over what it called a “horrible accident.”

“We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” said UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet in a statement obtained by 11 News.

According to UCCS, the student’s hammer was thrown past the certified barriers, hitting a spectator sitting in the stands.

“A member of the attending audience was killed when a hammer thrown by a participant cleared certified barriers and struck him. The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded, provided medical care and ultimately pronounced the audience member dead at the scene. Members of the UCCS Police Department and Colorado Springs Police Department were on scene,” UCCS said.

The university has not identified the victim, including whether the victim was a parent or other relative, but an 11 News viewer shared a statement they said they got from Colorado United Track Club.

The message sent to that viewer also said officials were working with District 12 social workers to determine how to best support students who attended the event as well as the families involved.

We will continue to update this story as we learn more.

Tragic Incident at High School Track and Field Meet in Colorado Springs: Spectator Killed by Hammer Out of Bounds

In a devastating turn of events, a spectator was killed at a high school track and field meet in Colorado Springs after a hammer reportedly went out of bounds and struck them. The incident occurred during the throwing events, where athletes compete in events such as shot put and hammer throw.

Witnesses at the meet described the chaos that ensued as the hammer flew out of the designated throwing area and struck the unsuspecting spectator. Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, but tragically, the individual succumbed to their injuries.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised questions about the safety protocols in place at high school track and field events. School officials have expressed their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim and have vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

As the community mourns this heartbreaking loss, our thoughts are with the family of the victim and all those affected by this tragic event. May we come together to support one another during this difficult time and work towards ensuring the safety of all spectators and athletes at future track and field meets.

  • Witness searches for answers after freak Colorado Springs track accident kills spectator

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – One person is dead after a freak accident at a high school track meet in Colorado Springs.

According to UCCS officials, it happened at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse Sunday morning when a hammer from one of the athletes, “cleared certified barriers,” and hit a spectator who died at the scene.

“We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet said.

One person at the meet, who wished to remain anonymous, told 11 News she thought more could have been done to protect attendees.

“If it was certified, I would believe it would be higher up and there wouldn’t be seating there and they would have already tested it to see if there was any possible incident, anything that could be possibly happening before you had two hundred people there,” she said.

She said she wasn’t the only one at the meet with safety concerns.

“This lady sat next to us and she commented about how the bleachers that were next to the hammer throw or the cage and she was like, ‘That’s terrifying, why is it next to that?“’

Another parent at the meet sent 11 News this picture of the set up:

The meet was not organized by the university or CHSSA, but the Colorado United Track Club. The club released the following statement to parents after the incident that reads in part:

    “Track family,

It is with a heavy heart that I share some sad news with you all.

At the UCCS track meet this morning, a spectator was hit in the head by a stray throwing weight. The man who was hit by this weight died on scene. He was the father of one of our CO United team members who attends Vista Ridge HS. The remainder of the meet was cancelled and all athletes were asked to go home.

Our Administration, Assistant Superintendent, and D12 Social Workers have been working to determine who to best support both CMHS students as well as the athletes and families of CO United who are affected. Kris Roberts, our D12 Athletic Director, is contacting the D49 Athletic Director to offer support and assistance as well.”

The club said they will have resources and support for the affected athletes and their families.

11 News has reached out to the club about what happened. We have not yet heard back. We have also reached out to UCCS about safety measures around the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse throwing area.

On Saturday, tragedy struck at the Colorado Springs track when a spectator was killed in a freak accident during a race. As a witness to the horrific incident, I am left searching for answers and grappling with the horror of what I saw.

The race had been going smoothly until suddenly, a car lost control and veered off the track, crashing into the stands where the spectator was standing. The impact was devastating, and despite the best efforts of emergency responders, the victim did not survive.

In the aftermath of the accident, I am haunted by the questions racing through my mind. How could this happen? Was it a mechanical failure, human error, or some other unforeseen circumstance? Could more have been done to prevent this tragedy?

As I try to come to terms with what I witnessed, I can’t help but feel a sense of helplessness and sadness. My thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones, who are now left to grieve the loss of their loved one in such a sudden and senseless manner.

I hope that a thorough investigation will provide answers and insight into how such a tragic event could occur. In the meantime, I will continue to hold onto the memories of that day and honor the memory of the victim by seeking justice and understanding in the wake of this heartbreaking accident.

  • Colorado Avalanche at New York Rangers odds, picks and predictions

The Colorado Avalanche (28-20-2) and the New York Rangers (24-20-4) meet Sunday at Madison Square Garden. Puck drop is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Avalanche vs. Rangers odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: Avalanche lead 1-0; Colorado won 3-2 in overtime at home on Jan. 14 as a moderate favorite (-147) as the Under (6) cashed

The past 5 meetings in this series have either gone to overtime or a shootout since Oct. 25, 2022. The Under has connected in 6 consecutive meetings, too.

The Avalanche traded RW Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. On Saturday in Boston, new center acquisitions Jack Drury and Martin Necas made their debuts in a 3-1 loss. Both players were scoreless, with Necas picking up a minus-3 rating with a hit and 2 blocked shots.

The Avs are 0-2-1 in the past 3 games, while totaling just 4 goals. The Under has cashed in each of the past 3 outings, while the total has gone low at an 8-3 clip in the past 11 games dating back to Jan. 4.

The Rangers are an impressive 7-0-3 across the past 10 games since Jan. 5, including a pair of wins in the past 2 games while outscoring the opposition 11-1.

    • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

    Avalanche at Rangers projected goalies

    Mac Blackwood (15-13-5, 2.57 GAA, .916 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Igor Shesterkin (17-15-2, 2.72 GAA, .914 SV%, 3 SO)

Blackwood allowed 3 goals on 25 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss against the Winnipeg Jets Wednesday, and he hasn’t won in the past 3 starts. He has not gotten a lot of offensive support lately, with just 9 goals in the past 5 outings (1.8 goals per game). He is still 4-3-2 with a 2.17 GAA and .916 SV% in 8 starts and 1 relief appearance in January.

Shesterkin has won 4 straight starts, including 2 shutouts Jan. 18-21. He is easily having his best stretch of the season in January, going 6-0-1 with 1.39 GAA and .948 SV% in 7 starts. He allowed 3 goals on 26 shots in a 3-2 OT loss on Jan. 14 in Denver.

Avalanche at Rangers picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Rangers 3, Avalanche 1

    Moneyline

The RANGERS (-115) are a strong play at home, as the Avalanche (-105) have the tough turnaround with a second straight matinee game on no rest.

New York is finally playing up to its capabilities, enjoying its best stretch of the season. It is 7-0-3 in the past 10 games, and a major reason for the turnaround has been the play of Shesterkin. New York is 5-0-1 in the past 6 games at Madison Square Garden.

Colorado is 0-2-1 in the past 3 games, while going just 4-5-2 in the previous 11 outings. It’s a major reason the Avalanche decided to shake things up and acquire the likes of Drury and Necas for the stretch run.

    Puck line/Against the spread

If you’re a little more adventurous, forget the moneyline and go for RANGERS -1.5 (+220) for the chance to more than double up.

Again, remember that last week the first meeting went to overtime, and each of the past 5 meetings haven’t been decided in regulation. So, there is plenty of risk playing New York. However, it has covered the puck line as a favorite in each of the past 2 games, while going 4-2 in the past 6 when favored.

    Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (+100) is the lean, but go very lightly.

The Under has cashed in 6 consecutive meetings since Dec. 14, 2021, including the 3-2 OT win by the Avalanche on Jan. 14.

The total has gone low at a 5-3 clip in the past 8 games for the Rangers, as Shesterkin is playing tremendous goal in the month of January.

For the Avs, the Under has hit in 3 in a row, while going 8-3 across the previous 11 outings.

  • Colorado Avalanche vs New York Rangers Prediction, Odds and Picks

The new-look Colorado Avalanche made the first stop on a three-game Eastern Conference road trip on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-1 in Boston. The Avalanche led 1-0 through two periods, but fell apart in the third period with three goals allowed. Jack Drury and Martin Necas, acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night for Mikko Rantanen, were each scoreless in their team debut. In fact, Necas took a minus-3 with two shots on goal, two blocked shots and a hit in 25:08 of ice time. The Avalanche were very physical, but they lacked much offense. The Avs are 0-2-1 in the past three games, posting a total of four goals.

The Rangers fell 3-2 in overtime at Ball Arena on Jan. 14 in the first meeting, as Mackenzie Blackwood and the Avs did just enough to ease by Igor Shesterkin and the Blueshirts. Devon Toews deposited the winner in overtime. Rantanen had an assist in regulation, but he is now obviously gone. The last time the Avs played on no rest Jan. 9, they won 6-1 in Minnesota after a loss in Chicago. They’re 3-2-0 in five games on no rest this season, but they’ve won the past three tries. Colorado runs into a Rangers team started to finally awaken from its slumber. New York is 7-0-3 in the past 10 games, and it has outscored Philadelphia and Ottawa 11-1 in the past two games. Despite the success of the Avs recently when playing on no rest, back Shesty and the Rangers Sunday.

Rangers ML (-110) at time of publishing. Playable to -120.

The Colorado Avalanche will face off against the New York Rangers in an exciting NHL matchup. Both teams have been performing well this season, making this game a must-watch for hockey fans.

The Avalanche have been on a hot streak, with a record of 9-4-1 so far this season. Led by star players Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, Colorado has been dominant on both ends of the ice. Their high-powered offense has been scoring goals at an impressive rate, while their defense has been shutting down opponents.

On the other hand, the Rangers have also been playing well, with a record of 8-3-3. Led by Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad, New York has been a tough team to beat. Their strong defensive play and solid goaltending have been key factors in their success this season.

In terms of odds, the Avalanche are currently favored to win this matchup. However, the Rangers have been known to pull off upsets, so this game could go either way.

Our prediction for this game is that the Avalanche will come out on top in a close matchup. With their high-powered offense and strong defense, we believe Colorado will be able to edge out the Rangers in this game.

    Picks: Colorado Avalanche.
