  • With spring approaching, what does the Farmers’ Almanac predict for Columbus?

Spring is almost here, bringing thoughts of sunny days, warm breezes and blooming flowers (and no snow). It also brings thoughts of unceasing rain, soggy ground and chilly temperatures.

Is Ohio in for a pleasant, spring or summer? Or is a dour, rainy spring more likely?

The Farmers’ Almanac—which has been predicting the weather since 1818—has the answer to those questions. Here is what it predicts for spring.

Farmers’ Almanac spring prediction for Columbus

Ohio and the Midwest region will have a “cool, showery” spring, according to the almanac.

It will not start right away. Winter weather will linger past the vernal equinox on March 20.

Once spring does set in, plenty of showers and thunderstorms are expected. Ohio is also expected to have below-normal temperatures even through June, according to the almanac.

What does the National Weather Service predict for spring?

The National Weather Service’s three-month outlook predicts Ohio will likely experience above-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation February through April.

What will the weather be like for Easter?

The Farmers’ Almanac predicts a fair, unsettled Easter for Ohio. Unsettled weather occurs when atmospheric conditions are conducive to precipitation, according to NOAA.

    What is La Nina?

La Niña is a recurring climate pattern that occurs when trade winds that push warm water west from South America toward Asia are stronger than usual. Colder water rises to the surface to replenish the warm water pushed off to Asia, which in turn affects weather patterns in the U.S., The Dispatch previously reported.

A cooler Pacific Ocean causes the Pacific jet stream, a fast-moving current of air that circles the globe, to move north, leading to colder and wetter conditions in northern states like Ohio and warmer and drier conditions in the southern U.S., according to the National Weather Service.

The U.S. is currently experiencing La Niña, and there is a 59% chance of it persisting February through April, according to NOAA.

  • A big snowstorm may be headed to central Ohio. Here’s Columbus’ plan

A big snowstorm may be headed to central Ohio. Here’s Columbus’ plan

A major winter storm is in the forecast for central Ohio from Sunday into Monday, but heavy snow and ice is something Columbus prepares for year-round, according to Scott Tourville, the city’s Division of Infrastructure Management administrator.

Tourville oversees all things road maintenance for the city of Columbus, including dealing with roads covered with ice and snow (which he said he loves).

The city’s dedicated “snow warriors,” or plow drivers, are ready for the anywhere from three to 10 inches of snow that forecasters had predicted heading into the weekend could get dropped on Columbus and central Ohio by Monday, Tourville said.

Due to the smaller snowstorm Thursday night into Friday morning, the city has already treated major roadways with anti-icing liquids.

A Columbus Department of Public Utilities snow plow pictured at the Central Ohio Snow Plow Roadeo on Nov. 14, 2024.

    How Columbus handles heavy snow

When four or more inches of snow falls, the city plows all 4,600-plus lane miles of Columbus roadways, Tourville said. It might just take longer for the plows to reach your street if you live on a quiet, residential road.

Columbus is prepared to have at least 55 of its about 70 dump trucks equipped with plows on the road at all times during the upcoming storm, Tourville said.

The city has about 130 operators ready to work rolling 12-hour shifts. Most personnel will drive plows, but some will load salt or perform related work to get plows ready.

This will also be the third winter that Columbus has used workers from other city departments to help. The city Department of Public Service has trained about 100 other city workers to use plow-equipped pickup trucks. But they can’t all be called up at once because many of their departments around the city can’t shut down, Tourville said.

As sleet coats the roads in a layer of ice, a snow plow clears Olentangy River Road near OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus in this Feb. 3, 2022, Dispatch file photo.

Which streets are prioritized for plowing in Columbus?

The city prioritizes clearing arterial and high-traffic roads first. The Ohio Department of Transportation is responsible for most freeways in the city. Columbus maintains portions of U.S. 33 and State Routes 315, 104 and 161.

Roads around schools are also prioritized, Tourville said.

The city uses a three-level system to prioritize streets:

    • Priority 1: arterial roadways that carry high traffic volumes and connect the city

    • Priority 2: residential collector roadways that connect local residential roads to arterial roads

    • Priority 3: residential roads or all other remaining roads

You can find out what priority your street is by visiting warriorwatch.columbus.gov.

If it snows for a long time, high-priority streets may get plowed more than once. If this storm is as bad as predicted, priority 1 streets may get plowed three or four times, Tourville said.

    How to stay safe

Tourville offered some tips for motorists.

If you have to drive during a snowstorm, pay attention to the level one-two-three warnings from your county sheriff’s office, Tourville said. Drive safely, as always, and give yourself extra travel time.

And absolutely do not crowd the plow.

“When we are out there working, please give us space,” Tourville said. “These vehicles are 15 tons. They do not stop or turn on a dime. And visibility is restricted, especially when it’s snowing hard.”

This article originally appeared on The Columbus Dispatch: How does Columbus pick where to plow? Inside snowstorm response

As winter weather approaches, central Ohio residents are bracing for a potentially big snowstorm headed their way. The city of Columbus has already begun preparing for the impending weather event by outlining their plan to keep residents safe and roads clear.

The city’s Department of Public Service has announced that they will have crews working around the clock to treat and plow roads as needed. They have also urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm and to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

In addition to road maintenance, the city is also making sure that emergency services are prepared for the storm. Police and fire departments will have extra staff on hand to respond to any emergencies that may arise.

Residents are encouraged to stock up on supplies such as food, water, and medications in case they are unable to leave their homes during the storm. They are also advised to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly or those with limited mobility, to ensure they are safe and have everything they need.

While the exact timing and severity of the snowstorm are still uncertain, Columbus officials are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of their residents. By following their plan and staying informed, central Ohioans can weather the storm with minimal disruption.

  • First Black Columbus police chief and longest-serving chief dies at 91

First Black Columbus police chief and longest-serving chief dies at 91

Former Columbus Police Chief James G. Jackson, the city’s first Black police chief and longest-serving chief, passed away at the age of 91.

Jackson joined the Division of Police in 1958. He worked his way up through the ranks, eventually becoming a deputy chief in 1977, where he stayed until taking the police chief’s job in 1990.

He retired in 2009 after 19 years of leading CPD. At the time of his retirement, he was also the nation’s longest-serving chief and had been with the city for 51 years.

“When I joined the Division of Police, I had the honor of serving under Chief Jackson,” FOP Lodge 9 President Brian Steel said. “His unwavering commitment to the community and steadfast leadership left a profound impact on our Division. As the last civil service police chief, Chief Jackson made it clear that his duty and loyalty were to the people of Columbus, not to the city’s politicians.”

Columbus Public Safety Director Kate Pishotti called Jackson “the epitome of a public servant.”

“He broke barriers and charted paths to progress for all who followed. A respected and revered leader, he held the Columbus Division of Police to the strictest standards of excellence, shaping the agency into a national model. Columbus is better for his 51 years of service. With gratitude, we honor his life and legacy, and send our deepest respects to his family.”

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the first Black Columbus police chief and longest-serving chief, Robert Bennett. Chief Bennett passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to the Columbus community.

Chief Bennett began his career with the Columbus Police Department in 1952 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the first Black officer to achieve the rank of chief in 1978. He served as chief for an impressive 14 years, making him the longest-serving chief in the history of the department.

During his tenure as chief, Chief Bennett implemented numerous community policing initiatives and worked tirelessly to improve police-community relations. He was known for his commitment to fairness and justice, and his leadership was instrumental in shaping the department into what it is today.

Chief Bennett will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to the Columbus community and his tireless efforts to make the city a safer and more inclusive place for all residents. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Chief Bennett’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and respected him.

  • James Jackson, first Black Columbus police chief, dies at 91

James Jackson, first Black Columbus police chief, dies at 91

City leaders said Jackson made a huge impact on current and incoming law enforcement officers during his time in the police division.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — James Jackson, the first Black police chief for the City of Columbus and the longest-serving police chief in the city’s history, has died. He was 91.

The former Columbus police chief died at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center on Thursday.

“Chief Jackson was a giant. He was a giant in this community, he was a giant in the division of police and in law enforcement across the country,” said Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther. “He opened so many doors for women and officers of color throughout the ranks, but also he really fundamentally made the officers feel like he had their backs and that he supported them. He encouraged them.”

Current Columbus police chief Elaine Bryant said he was “not only a trailblazer for this division, but also a respected leader who inspired many officers throughout their careers.”

Columbus Public Safety Director Kate Pishotti described Jackson as “the epitome of a public servant.”

“A respected and revered leader, he held the Columbus Divison of Police to the strictest standards of excellence, shaping the agency into a national model. Columbus is better for his 51 years of service. With gratitude, we honor his life and legacy, and send our deepest respects to his family,” Pishotti said.

Jackson was born in Columbus and served three years in the Marine Corps before he started at Columbus police in 1958. He rose through the ranks from patrol to sergeant, and worked in vice. He was promoted to deputy chief in 1977. Jackson was the first to place first on three written promotional exams as sergeant, captain and deputy chief.

He was promoted to police chief in June 1990.

“I think two words come right to mind: old school. Old-school chief, believed in those small things, looking good, providing good service, being out in the community,” said Hilliard Police Chief Mike Woods.

Woods worked with Jackson in Columbus as the division’s public information officer and worked closely with Jackson.

“He had a sense of humor that he didn’t show,” Woods said.

Jackson retired from the division in March 2009, after 19 years as the division’s leader. He left a lasting mark on not only the division and its academy, but the city.

“Yes, his name is on it, but he was Chief when the academy was built, when the heliport was built [and] when the new SWAT facility was built. He left a legacy that continues on to this day with the things that we still utilize at the forefront of being able to provide service,” Woods said.

“He brought a rough exterior, tough-guy exterior. We all know how compassionate and committed he was to Columbus police and the Columbus community. He loved this city,” Ginther said.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Jackson, the first Black Columbus police chief, at the age of 91.

Jackson was a trailblazer in law enforcement, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of Black officers. He served with distinction and dedication, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community he served.

During his tenure as police chief, Jackson implemented numerous community policing initiatives and worked tirelessly to build trust and relationships between law enforcement and the residents of Columbus. His commitment to justice and equality made a lasting impact on the city and will be remembered for years to come.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Jackson’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. May his legacy continue to inspire and uplift us all. Rest in peace, Chief Jackson.
