UCLA Makes Stunning Comeback on Floor to Edge Michigan State
LOS ANGELES – In front of a crowd of 10,681 in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom and a nationally-televised audience on FOX, No. 6 UCLA made an exhilarating comeback in the final rotation to defeat No. 5 Michigan State, 197.300-197.200. The Bruins trailed by seven-tenths of a point before scoring a national-best 49.800 on floor exercise, capped by a meet-clinching perfect 10.0 from Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles. The Bruins (6-2 overall, 3-0 in the Big Ten) are well-known for their floor parties, but Saturday’s party was a full-out rave, with each competitor building up the scores. Leadoff performer Emily Lee started with a 9.875 on her first floor routine of the year. Emma Malabuyo followed with a 9.900. Freshman Macy McGowan scored her first career 9.950. Brooklyn Moors and Chae Campbell went back-to-back with 9.975s, setting the stage for Chiles’ fifth career 10 on floor.
With UCLA surging and regaining all of the momentum in the room, Michigan State could not hold on to its lead, scoring 49.000 on balance beam. After their final competitor Gabrielle Stephen finished with a 9.825 to give the Spartans a one-tenth lead, the fate of the meet rested in Chiles’ hands. Needing a 9.925 to win the meet for UCLA, the junior delivered with a 10.0 to give the Bruins the narrow victory.

— Big Ten Network (@BigTenNetwork) February 2, 2025“That was incredible. It was one of those moments in sport that you live for. It was a really special moment,” said The R.C. Rothman UCLA Head Gymnastics Coach Janelle McDonald. “I couldn’t be more proud of their resilience and their fight and grit in that moment. That said a lot about who our team is.”
The meet started out close, with UCLA taking a 49.350-49.300 lead after recording a season-high on vault. Chiles led the team with a 9.925 to match her season best, McGowan scored a new career-high of 9.900, and Campbell earned a 9.875. Freshman Riley Jenkins made her collegiate debut, scoring a 9.850 on a Yurchenko 1.5. Michigan State kept it close with a 49.300 on uneven bars, led by Sage Kellerman’s 9.925.
UCLA continued fighting in rotation two, with Campbell, Mika Webster-Longin and Emma Malabuyo starting with consecutive marks of 9.850, all season-highs for each gymnast. Frida Esparza also added a 9.850, but the Bruins finished with a 49.150 after a mishap on the low bar from Chiles. Meanwhile, Michigan State had a historic vault rotation, recording a school record 49.600, the highest vault score in the nation this season. Three Spartans, Olivia Zsarmani, Nikki Smith and Kellerman, each scored 9.950s, enabling Michigan State to take the lead, 98.900-98.500.
The Spartans increased their lead in rotation three after scoring 49.300 on floor to UCLA’s 49.000 on beam. The Bruins started with back-to-back 9.850s from Emily Lee and Chiles, but Malabuyo owas the only other Bruin to score above 9.7, earning a meet-winning 9.925.

This was just the sixth score of 49.800 or higher by any UCLA team on any event.

LOS ANGELES — The No. 6 UCLA gymnastics team keyed in on the intensity of floor exercise in the fourth and final rotation of the meet to pull off a comeback win over No. 5 Michigan State on Saturday afternoon.
Chiles was battling illness all week and had a 104-degree fever on Wednesday but still managed to score a perfect 10.0 with her Prince-themed routine that allowed UCLA to edge Michigan State 197.300-197.200.
The 197.300 extends UCLA’s streak of scoring 197 or higher to four meets.
“I’ve done the flu game once before,” Chiles said. “If you take it back to 2017. It’s not fun but I knew in that moment that no matter what, how strong I am and I have people around me that can help me and support me. At the end of the day, we’re going to just keep pushing forward and I knew what my role was.”

Emma Malabuyo finished first on balance beam and UCLA claimed the top four spots in floor exercise to hand Michigan State its first Big Ten loss of the season.
UCLA (6-2 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) was trailing by roughly one point heading into floor — an event that it ranked second nationally in. Emily Lee made her season debut in the event and kicked off the team’s signature “floor party” with a 9.875.
The individual scores steadily climbed after that and each gymnast scored 9.900 or above. Brooklyn Moors and Chae Campbell each hit 9.975, which marked a career-high for Moors, to help boost UCLA to a nation-high 49.800 event score.
“We literally had no words after that,” Moors said. “We put everything we had and more into that last rotation. I think it’s just knowing that the work we’re doing is paying off and we’ll see more tens soon.”
UCLA led early on but fell behind at the midway point of the meet, which was the first gymnastics meet to ever be televised nationally on FOX.
The fourth-ranked vault squad in the nation allowed Michigan State (5-2, 2-1) to take a 98.900-98.500 lead. Three out of six gymnasts recorded a 9.950 on vault for a 49.600 team score — which outdid the Bruins’ 49.350.
Chiles scored a team-best 9.925 on vault but had a major deduction on uneven bars that hurt UCLA’s overall event score. No gymnasts surpassed a 9.850, which resulted in a season-low team score of 49.150.
Chiles recovered from the uncharacteristic performance and an impromptu dismount change on bars to hit a sharp routine on balance beam. She scored a 9.850 in her second competitive appearance of the season in the event.
“One thing about me when I’m sick is I forget how my brain works on bars,” Chiles said. “I just got frustrated and was like, I already forgot to do my pirouette, I forgot to do a while skill so I might as well do a double layout. I just need to get off of bars.”
Ciena Alipio’s score suffered a deduction when she fell on beam before calmly resuming the choreography with a side leg extension. Malabuyo was the next and final competitor on the apparatus, and her experience showed.
The Philippines Olympian danced next to the beam while waiting for her cue to perform, then delivered a 9.925 score to anchor the Bruins and get them to a 49.00 event score.
“Her getting up and nailing that beam routine was critical in resetting the tone,” head coach Janelle McDonald said. “It allowed us to go to floor and compete freely and aggressively. Emma has an incredible energy about her.”
UCLA secured the win on national television and in front of a Pauley Pavilion crowd of 10,681 during its annual alumni meet.
“Everyone really rallied behind us and we could feel that when we were coming from behind,” Campbell said. “It’s always special. We love drama, apparently.”

What we learned as Warriors stun first-place Thunder in comeback win
What we learned as Warriors stun first-place Thunder in comeback win originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
SAN FRANCISCO – Nine days after getting blown out by the Boston Celtics and looking nothing like an NBA playoff contender, the Warriors turned the tide and stunned the best team in basketball, beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-109 on Wednesday.
It took just about everything that Golden State had, too.
After digging a double-digit hole in the first half, the Warriors (24-23) chipped away and had the Chase Center crowd roaring after Stephen Curry’s go-ahead 3-pointer with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The lead changed hands four times after that until Curry and Andrew Wiggins nailed consecutive 3-pointers with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.
Curry returned to the lineup after sitting out Tuesday’s win over the Utah Jazz to rest his aching knees and scored 21 points, moving past Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Ray Allen for 27th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.
Wiggins was in solid form with 27 points. Kevon Looney added a career-high-tying 18 points, Gary Payton II had 15 points including an emphatic one-handed jam in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to go with nine rebounds. Brandin Podziemski added 11 points.
The Warriors needed every bit of it on a night when they had no answer for Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The NBA’s leading scorer had more points by himself than the Warriors had as a team at one point in the first half and finished the night with 52 points.
Now 3-1 on their homestand, the Warriors turn their attention to the Phoenix Suns who come to town Friday.
Here are the takeaways from Wednesday’s game:
Steph Finds His Shot
Historically, Curry has had some of the best games of his NBA career against the Thunder. He went into the night averaging 29.6 points a game against OKC, Curry’s second-best average against any team. After sitting out Tuesday’s win over the Jazz, however, Curry’s return got off to a slow start.
Playing against the best defense in the NBA, Curry struggled to get an open look and took a couple of forced shots that didn’t connect. He missed his first five shots and was 1 of 7 at halftime.
The two-time NBA scoring champ warmed up in the second half, knocking down 5 of 8 shots and scoring 17 points.
Credit some of Curry’s shooting problems to the Thunder, who repeatedly sent double-teams toward Curry to keep him from finding any sort of shooting rhythm.
Keep It Coming, Wiggs
Wiggins is in the midst of another scoring flurry, and the timing was perfect against the Thunder with the rest of Golden State’s offense stumbling.
Wiggins shot 10 of 17 from the floor and made several big shots, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer just before halftime. That’s five games in a row and eight of nine that Wiggins has reached double figures. He had a 13-game stretch earlier this season.
Until Jonathan Kuminga returns from his injury, Wiggins will continue to be the Warriors’ second-best scoring option. And as teams continue to send extra defenders in Curry’s direction, Wiggins should get plenty of open looks.
Starting Lineup Shake-up
Quinten Post’s first career NBA start didn’t last very long. The 7-footer played eight bland minutes in the first half then spent the rest of the game on the bench.
Post earned the start following a week of solid games when he was one of Golden State’s most effective reserves.
It was a different story as a starter.
Post had a stat line filled with zeroes other than the three fouls he picked up.
Despite Post’s rough night, it likely won’t be his last time taking the floor as a starter. With his ability to shoot from distance, Post is a legit stretch 5 and his presence on the court forces opponents to defend him honestly, which creates better spacing for Golden State’s shooters, especially Curry.
The Golden State Warriors pulled off a stunning comeback win against the first-place Oklahoma City Thunder, proving that they are still a force to be reckoned with in the NBA.Here are some key takeaways from the Warriors’ impressive victory:
1. Never count out the Warriors: Despite facing a double-digit deficit in the second half, the Warriors never lost faith in themselves and continued to fight back until they secured the win. This resilience and never-say-die attitude are trademarks of championship teams, and the Warriors showed that they still possess those qualities.
2. Steph Curry is still a superstar: Curry put on a show in the second half, scoring 20 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Warriors to victory. His ability to take over games and hit clutch shots is unparalleled, and he once again proved why he is one of the best players in the league.
3. Defense wins games: The Warriors’ defense stepped up in the second half, holding the Thunder to just 17 points in the fourth quarter. Their ability to get stops and force turnovers was crucial in their comeback win, showing that defense is just as important as offense in winning games.
Overall, the Warriors’ victory over the Thunder was a statement win that showed they are still a team to be feared in the NBA. With their combination of talent, experience, and heart, the Warriors have proven that they are capable of competing with the best teams in the league.

The Comeback of the Commercial Supersonic Jet
Supersonic air travel could be making a comeback, thanks to the work of companies like Boom. We visited Boom’s hangar in Mojave, California, to learn about what it takes to resurrect the dream of blisteringly fast intercontinental air travel, more than 20 years after the retirement of the Concorde supersonic jetliner.
At the time of writing, Boom Supersonic’s XB-1 demonstrator aircraft has flown 11 test flights, achieving a maximum speed of Mach 0.95. Mach 1 is the speed of sound — about 767 mph at 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Boom founder and CEO Blake Scholl says it’ll go supersonic “somewhere around flight 12.”
Boom Supersonic says its XB-1 demonstrator aircraft is getting ready to break the sound barrier.
Behind the controls for these flights is Chief Test Pilot Tristan “Gepetto” Brandenburg, who tells me that from inside the aircraft, going supersonic is “actually kind of anticlimactic.” Aside from a subtle change in the feel of the controls, the only way he would even know it happened is by keeping an eye on his speed indicator.
Brandenburg shows off his view from the cockpit inside the XB-1 flight simulator.
The infamous sonic boom, after which the company and the XB-1 “Baby Boom” aircraft is named, is primarily something experienced by people outside the aircraft. To minimize disturbance to anybody living and working in Boom’s flight path, the company says it plans to fly its passenger aircraft at supersonic speeds over the ocean, and will fly at just below the speed of sound when over land. That’s still significantly faster than the cruising speed of traditional jetliners, however, which is about 550 to 600 mph.
Boom says it is also keeping an eye on NASA’s development of low-boom supersonic technology and may integrate that into future aircraft designs.
Shortly after going supersonic, Boom’s XB-1 demonstrator aircraft will be retired and the focus will shift to building the scaled-up passenger aircraft Overture.
The XB-1 flight test program is paving the way for the Overture, Boom’s passenger aircraft, which will be capable of running on both traditional aviation fuel as well as newer sustainable aviation fuel.
The company aims to carry its first passengers in about five years. It has already completed construction on a “superfactory” that will churn out 33 Overture aircraft a year to start, with plans to expand. United, American and Japan Airlines already have preorders in.
Boom completed construction of its Overture Superfactory in North Carolina in June last year.
While ticket pricing will ultimately be set by the various airlines, passengers can expect to pay a bit of a premium for the faster ride, especially “on day one, when there are more passengers than there are airplanes,” Scholl says. “But our goal is to get [prices] down over time.”

The commercial supersonic jet, once thought to be a relic of the past, is making a comeback in the aviation industry. With advancements in technology and increasing demand for faster travel, several companies are working on developing new supersonic jets that promise to revolutionize air travel. One of the most anticipated projects is the Boom Supersonic Overture, a Mach 2.2 airliner that aims to cut travel times in half. With a capacity of 65-88 passengers, the Overture will be able to fly from New York to London in just 3.5 hours, making it a game-changer for business travelers and jet-setters alike.
Another player in the supersonic jet market is Aerion Supersonic, which is developing the AS2, a 12-passenger jet that can reach speeds of Mach 1.4. The AS2 is expected to enter service in 2027 and promises to deliver a comfortable and sustainable supersonic travel experience.
The return of the commercial supersonic jet is not without its challenges, including regulatory hurdles and concerns about noise pollution. However, companies like Boom Supersonic and Aerion Supersonic are working closely with regulators and stakeholders to address these issues and pave the way for a new era of faster, more efficient air travel.
As we look to the future, the revival of the commercial supersonic jet offers exciting possibilities for travelers worldwide. With shorter flight times and increased comfort, these new jets have the potential to transform the way we think about air travel. Get ready to soar into the future with the comeback of the commercial supersonic jet.
