Biden awards Liz Cheney, Jan 6 committee chairman a medal: US ‘is better because of their dedication’

President Biden awarded the leaders of the former Jan. 6 House Select Committee, former Republican Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney and Mississippi Democrat Rep. Bennie Thompson, the second-highest civilian medal for their “exemplary deeds of service for their country,” according to the White House.

“The Presidential Citizens Medal is awarded to citizens of the United States of America who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens. President Biden believes these Americans are bonded by their common decency and commitment to serving others. The country is better because of their dedication and sacrifice,” the White House detailed in a statement Thursday.

The White House announced 20 people across the nation would receive the Presidential Citizens Medal on Thursday, including Cheney and Thompson, who Biden lauded as “intrepid” and holding a “steadfast commitment to truth.”

“Throughout two decades in public service, including as a Congresswoman for Wyoming and Vice Chair of the Committee on the January 6 attack, Liz Cheney has raised her voice—and reached across the aisle—to defend our Nation and the ideals we stand for: Freedom. Dignity. And decency. Her integrity and intrepidness remind us all what is possible if we work together,” the White House said in its statement of Cheney.

“Born and raised in a segregated Mississippi, as a college student inspired by the Civil Rights movement, Bennie Thompson volunteered on campaigns and registered southern Black voters. That call to serve eventually led him to Congress, where he chaired the House January 6th Committee—at the forefront of defending the rule of law with unwavering integrity and a steadfast commitment to truth,” the statement on Thompson read.

Thompson served as the chair of the Jan. 6 select committee, with Cheney serving as the vice chair. The Jan. 6 committee was founded in July 2021 to investigate the breach of the U.S. Capitol earlier that year by supporters of Trump ahead of President Biden officially taking office on Jan. 20. The Jan. 6 committee’s investigation was carried out when Democrats held control of the House.

The committee concluded its 18-month investigation in 2023, after Republicans regained control of the House, and sent referrals to the Justice Department recommending that Trump be criminally prosecuted for his involvement in the lead-up to his supporters breaching the Capitol.

The committee was composed of seven Democrats and two Republican lawmakers, Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, both of whom are no longer in office.

Incoming Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo., reacted to Biden’s decision to award Cheney with the medal in a comment to Fox Digital on Thursday, slamming her as a former elected official who “represents partisanship and divisiveness.”

“President Biden was either going to pardon Liz Cheney or give her an award. She doesn’t deserve either. She represents partisanship and divisiveness, not Wyoming,” he said.

Republican elected officials and President-elect Donald Trump have railed against the committee and its leaders for years, with a recent Republican House report calling on the FBI to investigate Cheney for “potential criminal witness tampering” related to her role on the former select committee.

“Based on the evidence obtained by this Subcommittee, numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney, the former Vice Chair of the January 6 Select Committee, and these violations should be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” stated a report released last month by House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight Chair Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga. “Evidence uncovered by the Subcommittee revealed that former Congresswoman Liz Cheney tampered with at least one witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, by secretly communicating with Hutchinson without Hutchinson’s attorney’s knowledge.”

Cheney and Thompson both slammed the report in comments to Fox Digital last month.

DONALD TRUMP SAYS HE’LL PARDON JAN 6 RIOTERS ON DAY 1: ‘ACTING VERY QUICKLY’

“The January 6th Committee’s hearings and report featured scores of Republican witnesses, including many of the most senior officials from Trump’s own White House, campaign and Administration,” Cheney said. “All of this testimony was painstakingly set out in thousands of pages of transcripts, made public along with a highly detailed and meticulously sourced 800 page report. Now, Chairman Loudermilk’s ‘Interim Report’ intentionally disregards the truth and the Select Committee’s tremendous weight of evidence, and instead fabricates lies and defamatory allegations in an attempt to cover up what Donald Trump did. Their allegations do not reflect a review of the actual evidence, and are a malicious and cowardly assault on the truth. No reputable lawyer, legislator or judge would take this seriously.”

Cheney had served as the third-highest ranking Republican in the House but was ousted from her role as GOP conference chair by her colleagues in 2021. Cheney lost her 2022 primary run for re-election to Trump-backed Rep. Harriet Hageman.

HOUSE GOP REPORT ALLEGES JAN 6 COMMITTEE ‘DELETED RECORDS AND HID EVIDENCE’

The report followed speculation that Biden could grant Cheney a presidential pardon ahead of leaving the Oval Office. Late last year, Trump renewed his longstanding criticisms of Cheney and the Jan. 6 committee, suggesting she and Thompson could face jail time.

“Cheney did something that’s inexcusable, along with Thompson and the people on the un-select committee of political thugs and, you know, creeps,” he said in an interview with NBC. “They deleted and destroyed all evidence.”

“And Cheney was behind it. And so was Bennie Thompson and everybody on that committee,” he continued. “For what they did, honestly, they should go to jail.”

The Presidential Citizens Medal is the second-highest honor a civilian can receive from the president, after the Presidential Medal of Freedom, according to the Associated Press.

In a surprising turn of events, President Joe Biden has awarded Liz Cheney, the chairwoman of the Jan 6 committee, with a prestigious medal for her dedication to uncovering the truth behind the Capitol insurrection. In a ceremony at the White House, Biden praised Cheney for her unwavering commitment to upholding democracy and holding those responsible for the events of January 6th accountable.

During his speech, Biden stated, “The United States is better because of the dedication and hard work of individuals like Liz Cheney. She has shown immense courage in the face of adversity and has been a true patriot in her pursuit of justice. We owe her a debt of gratitude for her tireless efforts to uncover the truth and ensure that such a dark day in our nation’s history never happens again.”

Cheney, who has faced backlash from members of her own party for her role in the committee, expressed gratitude for the recognition and vowed to continue fighting for the truth. “I am honored to receive this medal from President Biden, but the real honor is in serving my country and working towards a more just and transparent government. The events of January 6th were an attack on our democracy, and it is our duty to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”

The awarding of this medal to Cheney highlights the importance of bipartisan cooperation in the pursuit of truth and justice. It serves as a reminder that, despite political differences, we must all come together to defend our democracy and uphold the values that make America great.

  • Biden to award Presidential Citizens Medal to key members of House Jan. 6 committee

Biden to award Presidential Citizens Medal to key members of House Jan. 6 committee

President Joe Biden will award Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., who served as chair and vice chair of the now-defunct House Jan. 6 committee, with the Presidential Citizens Medal during a ceremony at the White House on Thursday.

The medal is the second-highest civilian award in the United States, behind only the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Thompson and Cheney’s inclusion on the list of honorees comes as President-elect Donald Trump has increasingly threatened to punish former members of the House Jan. 6 committee, which examined his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol during its 18-month investigation.

In a December interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Trump said that former members of the committee, which included just two Republicans — Cheney and former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill. — “should go to jail.”

The comment came as Trump also detailed his plans to pardon the rioters who have been convicted for their roles in the attack at the Capitol that day.

Thompson has fired back on the notion that Trump could jail members of the committee, telling reporters on Capitol Hill in December that the committee did nothing “that violates the law.”

In a lengthy statement after Trump’s “Meet the Press” interview, Cheney also blasted the president-elect’s comments, saying, “Donald Trump’s suggestion that members of Congress who later investigated his illegal and unconstitutional actions should be jailed is a continuation of his assault on the rule of law and the foundations of our republic.”

House Republicans have also attacked Cheney for her role on the committee. Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., called for the former congresswoman’s role in the Jan. 6 committee to be investigated, alleging that she engaged in witness tampering.

Thompson has also suggested that he would accept a preemptive pardon from the president before he leaves office if Biden offered.

“It’s [Biden’s] prerogative. If he offers it to me or other members of the committee … I would accept it, but it’s his choice,” Thompson told CNN last month.

The comment came days after two sources familiar told NBC News that Biden and his senior aides had discussed issuing preemptive pardons for those who could become targets of Trump in his next administration.

Thompson and Cheney are among more than a dozen Americans that Biden will honor on Thursday. Other recipients include former Sens. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, Bill Bradley of New Jersey, Nancy Kassebaum of Kansas and Ted Kaufman of Delaware.

Several veterans, marriage equality activists, women’s rights activists and civil rights advocates are also set to be honored.

President Joe Biden announced today that he will be awarding the Presidential Citizens Medal to key members of the House Jan. 6 committee in recognition of their dedication to upholding democracy and seeking justice for the events that took place on January 6, 2021.

The Presidential Citizens Medal is one of the highest civilian honors in the United States and is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the country. The members of the House Jan. 6 committee have been at the forefront of investigating the Capitol insurrection and holding those responsible accountable.

In a statement, President Biden praised the committee members for their tireless efforts to uncover the truth and defend the democratic values that are the foundation of our nation. He emphasized the importance of their work in ensuring that such a heinous attack on our democracy never happens again.

The award ceremony will take place in the coming weeks, where the committee members will receive their medals in recognition of their courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice. This honor serves as a reminder of the critical role that each of us plays in safeguarding our democracy and upholding the principles that make America great.

Hands Off: The Future of Self-Driving Cars

The development of self-driving cars has the potential to revolutionize transportation as we know it. However, with this innovation comes the need for careful consideration of safety, regulation, and ethical implications. The Committee on Science Commerce VG is at the forefront of these discussions, working to ensure that the future of self-driving cars is a safe and responsible one.

One key issue that the Committee is addressing is the question of who is ultimately responsible in the event of an accident involving a self-driving car. Should it be the manufacturer, the software developer, the owner, or some combination of these parties? This is just one of the many complex legal and ethical questions that must be answered as self-driving cars become more prevalent on our roads.

Another important consideration is the potential impact of self-driving cars on jobs in the transportation industry. While self-driving cars have the potential to increase efficiency and reduce accidents, they also have the potential to displace millions of truck drivers, taxi drivers, and other transportation workers. The Committee is working to develop policies that will help to mitigate these potential negative consequences.

Overall, the Committee on Science Commerce VG is committed to ensuring that the future of self-driving cars is a safe, efficient, and equitable one. By addressing key issues such as safety, liability, and job displacement, we can help to shape a future in which self-driving cars benefit society as a whole. Hands off, the future of self-driving cars is in good hands with the Committee on Science Commerce VG.

  • Marianne Williamson Announces Campaign to Lead the Democratic National Committee

Marianne Williamson Announces Campaign to Lead the Democratic National Committee

Any hopes that two-time failed presidential candidate Marianne Williamson had left politics and returned to her roots as a spiritual guru were dashed Thursday. That’s when the vocal supporter of alleged sexual assailant and anti-vaxxer Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. announced via her Substack (of course) that she is launching a campaign to head up the Democratic National Committee and to “reinvent the party” in her image.

Marianne Williamson sprang into the spotlight in the late 1980s as an advisor to the stars, characterized in a 1991 Vanity Fair feature as “a liberal, Jewish ex-lounge singer from Texas” who brought A Course in Miracles—a book allegedly dictated to its author by Jesus Christ—into the mainstream. Now 72, she’s since moved from the spiritual realm into the political, throwing her hat into the Democratic presidential ring in 2020, and again in 2024.

Williamson’s non-traditional stances on the 2019 campaign trail feel almost quaint compared to RFK, Jr.’s during the most recent election cycle, but such is the frog-in-pot life of America in 2024. Still, her announcement that, if elected, she’d launch a Department of Peace, or that hurricanes could be controlled by collective meditation, or that “James Cameron deserves a Nobel Peace Price” for Avatar still managed to raise even the most jaded political watchers’ brows, as did allegations of a toxic and abusive environment for campaign staffers in 2020. (Williamson, for her part, has denied those allegations, calling them a “distraction technique.”)

But though the heavily-memed former candidate appeared to eventually realize that her path to the White House began and ended with her vision board, the spiritualist wants to remain in the game. In her subscription newsletter, “TRANSFORM with Marianne Williamson,” the teacher (who just yesterday used her platform to announce “only love is real”) posted an open letter to DNC members saying that “The MAGA phenomenon now challenges the very way that politics are done in America, and the traditional tool kit of party organizing will not be enough to meet the moment.”

Williamson, who just last month tweeted “Good choice!” in response to Donald Trump’s announcement that Kennedy would be named the country’s Secretary of Health and Human Services, writes that “President Trump has ushered in an age of political theatre – a collective adrenaline rush that has enabled him to not only move masses of people into his camp but also masses of people away from ours.”

While Williamson does not mention the top contenders to replace DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, who led the party since 2021 and isn’t expected to seek another term, her criticism of the Dem’s current strategies seems a shot at traditional candidates such as Minnesota Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, former Homeland Security official Nate Snyder, Sen. James Skoufis, and Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler. “Data analysis, fundraising, field organizing, and beefed-up technology – while all are important – will not be enough to prepare the way for Democratic victory in 2024 and beyond,” Williamson writes, proposing “A party that listens more, and makes people feel that their thoughts and feelings are as important as their wallets.”

The DNC is slated to hold its election for positions, including its chair, on February 1, with four candidate forums planned throughout January. Williamson is the only woman, thus far, to announce her candidacy for the role.

In a video that accompanied her letter, Williamson said, “Donald Trump is a 21st-century political phenomenon, and we need to become one, too … We need to know what it was that made people feel that their wallets were more important than their pain. We need to understand what it is that has made people emotionally and psychologically disconnect from a sense that the Democratic Party was part of a great legacy in American history.”

Marianne Williamson, best-selling author and spiritual teacher, has announced her campaign to lead the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Williamson, known for her advocacy of love and compassion in politics, believes that her leadership can bring a new vision to the party.

In a statement released today, Williamson stated, “Our party is at a crossroads, and we need a leader who can inspire unity and bring a sense of purpose to our movement. I believe that my message of love and healing can help heal the divisions within our party and bring us closer to our values of justice and equality.”

Williamson’s campaign will focus on grassroots organizing, building a diverse coalition of supporters, and advocating for progressive policies that address the needs of all Americans. She has already gained support from a number of prominent figures in the party, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

As the DNC prepares for a new chapter in its history, Marianne Williamson’s candidacy offers a fresh perspective and a commitment to building a more inclusive and compassionate Democratic Party. Stay tuned for updates on her campaign and how you can get involved in supporting her vision for the party.

Marianne Williamson launches bid for Democratic National Committee chair

Washington — Marianne Williamson, a self-help author who twice ran for president, announced Thursday that she is running for chair of the Democratic National Committee.

In an open letter to DNC members posted online, Williamson laid out her plan for the party as it seeks to move forward after losing the White House and Senate in November. She urged Democrats to sign a petition to allow her to participate in candidate forums that will be held in January.

DNC members will elect the party’s new chair and other officers at its winter meeting Feb. 1. There will also be a series of four forums to allow those running for DNC chair to speak with party members and lay out their vision for the Democratic Party.

“As chairwoman, I will work to reinvent the party from the inside out,” Williamson wrote in her pitch to DNC members. “For if we want a new president in four years, and a new Congress in two, then we must immediately get about the task of creating a new party.”

She said under her plan, the Democratic Party will be one that “listens more, and makes people feel that their thoughts and feelings are as important as their wallets” and “advocates unequivocally for the working people of the United States.” Williamson said the party will have “the humility to recognize we need to look in the mirror, and be willing to reinvent ourselves.”

“We won’t just fight; we will inspire. We will create a surge of patriotic fervor, and a connectedness of the American heart to the great historical legacy of this country,” she wrote. “Our ultimate success will be creating in people’s minds a sense that in order to further that legacy, your smartest move is to vote for Democrats.”

Williamson joins a field of candidates that includes Martin O’Malley, former governor of Maryland; Ken Martin, leader of the Minnesota arm of the Democratic Party; and Ben Wikler, chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. Jaime Harrison, the current DNC chair, is not seeking reelection.

Williamson, 72, sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 and 2024. She was the first Democrat to launch her presidential bid during the most recent election, becoming the first primary challenger to President Biden.

A spiritual adviser and author, Williamson suspended her presidential campaign in early February, but rejoined the race several weeks later. After the primaries ended in June, she posted on social media that she was “no longer a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president.” Mr. Biden dropped out of the race in July, with the Democratic Party ultimately nominating Vice President Kamala Harris.

In a surprise announcement today, spiritual author and activist Marianne Williamson has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the position of Democratic National Committee chair. Known for her inspirational speeches and advocacy for social justice issues, Williamson is seeking to bring a new vision and energy to the Democratic Party.

In a statement released on her website, Williamson said, “I believe that the Democratic Party is in need of a major shake-up. We need leaders who are willing to think outside the box and challenge the status quo. As DNC chair, I will work tirelessly to unite our party, inspire grassroots activism, and push for progressive policies that truly benefit all Americans.”

Williamson’s candidacy is sure to shake up the race for DNC chair, which has so far been dominated by more establishment figures. With her unique blend of spirituality and progressive politics, Williamson could energize a new generation of Democrats and bring fresh ideas to the party.

Stay tuned for updates on Marianne Williamson’s campaign for DNC chair and her vision for the future of the Democratic Party. #WilliamsonforDNCChair

Committee Management in Human Services: Running Effective Meetings, Committees, and Decision-Making Processes

Committees play a crucial role in the field of human services, as they bring together a diverse group of individuals with different perspectives and expertise to address complex issues and make important decisions. However, managing committees effectively requires careful planning, communication, and facilitation skills.

One key aspect of committee management is running effective meetings. This involves setting clear agendas, establishing ground rules for participation, and ensuring that all members have the opportunity to contribute their ideas and opinions. It is important to keep meetings focused and productive, and to follow up on action items to ensure that decisions are implemented in a timely manner.

In addition to running meetings, committee management also involves overseeing the overall functioning of the committee, including managing conflicts and disagreements, building consensus, and ensuring that decisions are made in a fair and transparent manner. It is important to create a supportive and inclusive environment where all members feel valued and respected.

Finally, effective committee management also involves making strategic decisions about the composition and structure of the committee. This may involve recruiting new members with specific expertise or experience, re-evaluating the committee’s goals and objectives, or considering changes to the committee’s operating procedures.

Overall, effective committee management is essential for ensuring that human services organizations are able to address complex issues and make informed decisions. By running effective meetings, managing conflicts, and making strategic decisions, committee managers can help to ensure that committees are able to fulfill their important role in the field of human services.
