Sadly, as of this writing, there is much turmoil here in California. Many here on campus have been affected by the fires ravaging the southern parts of our state, and the scenes of devastation are heartrending. But we’re remaining strong, and we’re supporting those in need.
As ever, Aggies help Aggies.
Though the holidays were less than a month ago, they already feel long past. And not only because of the fires. In fact, many positive things have happened, even this early into the year. Our faculty have continued to make advances in their respective fields, our students have returned to the classroom, the lab and the field, and our community—with mentorship, compassion and support—continues to represent many of the best parts of UC Davis.
To our colleagues, students, alumni, donors and all those who connect with the college in other ways, I encourage you to embrace community, resilience and not let go of hope.
As the Dean of this institution, I am proud to share with you all the importance of mentorship, compassion, and support in our academic community.
Mentorship is a crucial aspect of personal and professional growth. It provides guidance, encouragement, and valuable insights to help individuals navigate their academic and career paths. As members of this institution, it is our responsibility to mentor and support each other, fostering a culture of collaboration and growth.
Compassion is another essential value that we should prioritize in our interactions with one another. Showing empathy and understanding towards our peers creates a sense of belonging and support within our community. By practicing compassion, we can build strong relationships and create a positive learning environment for everyone.
Support is the foundation on which our academic community thrives. Whether it be academic, emotional, or personal, offering support to one another can make a significant difference in someone’s life. As Dean, I encourage all members of our community to lend a helping hand, be a listening ear, and provide assistance whenever needed.
In conclusion, mentorship, compassion, and support are essential values that we should uphold in our academic community. Let us continue to mentor, show compassion, and support each other, creating a welcoming and nurturing environment for all. Together, we can achieve greatness and make a positive impact on the lives of those around us.
