Indiana Fever Star to Compete in Unrivaled’s 1 on 1 Tournament
The brand new Unrivaled 3v3 league is just two weeks old, but they already have an exciting event that is just around the corner–a one-on-one tournament, where the winner will receive a slice of the $350,000 prize pool. According to Unrivaled’s website, Indiana Fever star Lexie Hull will be one of the 30 participants.
Competing along with Hull will be four of her teammates on Rose Basketball Club, Chelsea Gray, Kahleah Copper, Brittney Sykes, and Azurá Stevens, though Angel Reese is not among those listed.
The way the payouts will work is that the winner will receive $200,000, while each clubmate of the winner will receive $10,000. The runner-up will get $50,000, and the semi-finalists that do not advance will get $25,000 each.
Each of the participants has been split into one of four pods, and fan voting will determine the seeding for the tournament. Each round will be single elimination, until the finals, which will be a best-of-three series.
The tournament itself is set to begin on February 10, and games will be played to either 11 points or for ten minutes, whichever outcome occurs first.
The shot clock will only last for seven seconds, and will follow “winners” rules, where if a player makes a basket, they get to inbound the next possession. The scoring will also be the same as in a regular game, so two-point shots will count for two, and anything beyond the arc will add three points to the score.
For a player like Hull that can get hot from deep in a hurry and be a solid defensive presence, she could end up having a slight advantage in this tournament.
As for her team, they sit at 1-3 after the first two weeks of play, losing their most recent game to the undefeated Laces club. Hull has been averaging just seven minutes per contest, the fewest minutes on the team, though she has performed well when she’s on the court on average, putting up 7.3 points per game.
Rose BC takes the court next on Friday, January 31 at 4:15 (PT) against Phantom Basketball Club, led by Satou Sabally, Britney Griner, Sabrina Ionescu, and Hull’s teammate on the Fever, Katie Lou Samuelson. Phantom BC is also currently 1-3 to begin the season and is the only team left in the league that Rose BC has yet to face.

Yankees’ Steinbrenner admits it is difficult to compete with Dodgers financially
Yet, the Los Angeles Dodgers have outspent the Yankees and every other Major League team on their way to a $290 million payroll — the highest in baseball.
“It’s difficult for most of us owners to be able to do the kind of things that they’re doing,” Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said to YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits in an interview that aired Tuesday night.
The Yankees payroll doesn’t fall too far behind the Dodgers, sitting at $273 million. However once you factor in the competitive balance tax each team is currently projected to pay in 2025, the discrepancy grows.
The Dodgers have been over the MLB’s competitive balance tax threshold for four consecutive seasons, meaning they are required to pay a 50 per cent tax on all overages. Los Angeles is also nearly $50 million over the base threshold, adding an additional 42.5 per cent surcharge. As a result, the team is projected to pay a staggering total of nearly $370 million in payroll plus tax.
While the Yankees are also subject to the 50 per cent tax, their total salary only results in a 12 per cent surcharge, bringing their projected post-tax total to $291 million.
The same Forbes list ranked the Dodgers as the second most valuable MLB franchise — the two teams ranked fourth and 24th among all sports franchises, respectively. Forbes also valued the Yankees at $7.55 billion, and the Dodgers at $5.45 billion, last March.
“I wouldn’t say surprised, but I mean I really didn’t know what to expect, I didn’t know what was going to happen,” said Steinbrenner of the Soto talks. “I mean, Juan’s got a big family, they were all very involved, so there were a lot of different voices in his ear talking to him and giving him advice. I really just didn’t know. So I wouldn’t say I wasn’t surprised, I was certainly disappointed.”
The Yankees may have lost an American League MVP finalist who finished sixth in the majors in wins above replacement at 7.9, but they still have the 2024 AL MVP in Aaron Judge, and made significant additions around him.
“We’re excited about them,” said Steinbrenner. “A lot of hard work in December into January. Some people may disagree with me, but some people will agree with me — I think we have a better team than we did a year ago today.”
Replacing Soto’s prolific offensive production, including the best on-base percentage in baseball over the past five years, will be no easy feat. But the Yankees have added two former National League MVPs in Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt, who offer strong, albeit less consistent offensive profiles than Soto.
“Bellinger and Goldschmidt, I think they’ll make up for a good deal of Juan’s offence” Steinbrenner said.
The Yankees’ largest off-season expenditure is the eight-year, $218-million deal given to left-handed starter Max Fried. He will join a rotation that includes former Cy-Young winner Gerrit Cole and 2024 AL Rookie of the Year winner Luis Gil.
“The work ethic is impeccable from what I’ve heard. And (Fried’s) a great teammate,” said Steinbrenner. “I mean he’s everything we want in our clubhouse, over and above what he brings when he’s on that mound.”
New York also added elite closer Devin Williams via a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. But as the dust settles, their $236 million total committed to players this off-season still pales in comparison to the $380 million in total money committed to free agents by the Dodgers.
“Now, we’ll see if it pays off,” Steinbrenner said of the high spending done by the Dodgers. “They still have to have a season relatively injury-free for it to work out for them, and it’s a long season, as you know, and once you get to the post-season, anything can happen. We’ve seen that time and time again. We’ll see who’s there at the end.”

Caitlin Clark disinclined to compete in NBA All-Star three-point contest, sources tell SBJ

Caitlin Clark has told the NBA she is disinclined to participate in an All-Star Game three-point contest next month that could include Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Sabrina Ionescu, sources told SBJ, although indications are the league is still in discussions with Clark’s representatives.
Sources said Clark is not interested in shooting three-pointers off of a ball rack — considering her practice regimen consists only of catch-and-shoot three-pointers or shots off the dribble — and, unless she is persuaded otherwise, she will decline the invitation.
That decision would be somewhat of a blow to the league, which had contemplated moving what they call Steph vs. Sabrina 2.0 to the Sunday night of All-Star weekend, to be staged in between the second semifinal and championship game of the first ever All-Star tournament in San Francisco.
In another development, the league officially announced its Rising Stars Challenge rosters today, revealing that Bronny James would not be one of the seven G League players participating in the event. There had previously been the remote possibility that, if Bronny James was part of a team that won the Rising Stars Challenge, he could possibly face off against his father LeBron James in an All-Star semifinal on Sunday. But, according to Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, Bronny (averaging 16.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists in the G League) declined an invitation to play.
The league has spent the past year attempting to spruce up the Sunday portion of the All-Star Game, eventually drawing up the four-team tournament that included three teams of eight NBA All-Stars, plus the Rising Stars winner. And the idea of adding Clark to mix became a peripheral priority.
According to sources, the league reached out to the Fever guard through her close associates and agents, and the possibility still exists she could still accept their three-point shooting invitation. One scenario would have an NBA player such as Curry conceivably reciprocating and doing a similar shoot-out at the WNBA All-Star Game next summer.
“I wouldn’t say it’s over until the thing happens,’’ a source said of Clark’s decision. “A lot of this stuff comes together very, very late.’’

It’s because we have a lot of buy in from the junior class. We had the 10 first-round picks last year. All of those guys were seniors. We’ve got a number of juniors that I think are going to be first-rounders this year.”
The Falcons drafted three defensive lineman last season.
“I think our cut line on the (defensive) line, our lowest graded player was the fourth round,” Nagy said. “That’s pretty high on the board. Some positions you get down there in the sixth round. Some years, when it was just all senior running backs, you were picking guys in the seventh round. The (defensive) line class, by far was the toughest cuts.”
There’s usually a defensive standout flying under the radar, too.
“I love (cornerback) Upton Stout from Western Kentucky,” Nagy said. “He’s just an easy guy to like. You put on the tape and he’s just super urgent. He’s flying around.”
Here’s a look at the Georgia players and the Georgia Tech representative (height, weight, other measurements recorded at Senior Bowl):
Trevor Etienne, RB, Georgia, 5-foot-8, 202 pounds: He spent his first two seasons at Florida before transferring to Georgia for the 2024 season. He rushed 122 times for 609 yards and nine touchdowns for the Bulldogs. He rushed 371 times for 2,081 yards and 23 touchdowns over his career. He’s a dependable pass-catcher. He caught 62 of 63 targets over his career for 432 yards and a touchdown. He missed some time last season with a rib injury.
Arian Smith, WR, Georgia, 6-0, 185: He played in 47 games for the Bulldogs. He caught 68 passes for 1,356 yards (19.9 yard per catch) and 10 touchdowns. His injury history will scare off some teams. He was credited with 10 dropped passes heading into the Sugar Bowl by pro football focus.
Dan Jackson, DB, Georgia, 5-11, 194: He was a walk-on at Georgia after playing at North Hall High. He made two big plays in Georgia’s 44-42 eight-overtime win over Georgia Tech last season. Against the Yellow Jackets, Jackson made the late-fourth-quarter hit on quarterback Haynes King that caused a fumble. In overtime, Jackson’s sack of King led to one of the seven scoreless periods for Tech in extra time. He was a Coaches’ All-SEC third-team pick last season. He made 12 starts and played in 13 games.
Smael Mondon Jr., LB, Georgia, 6-2 3/8, 229: The former Paulding County High standout was a five star recruit. Played early in his career. He played in 51 games and had 212 tackles and 18 tackles for losses. He also showed some pass-rush ability with eight sacks.
Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, DL, Georgia, 6-4, 276: Played in 37 games for the Bulldogs over four seasons. He played mostly in reserve and rotational roles. He made three tackles, including two for a combined loss of eight yards in the SEC opener win over Kentucky to earn SEC defensive lineman of the week award last season.
Jackson Hawes, TE, Georgia Tech, 6-4, 252, 79-inch wing span: The Yale (2019-2023) transfer was used primarily as a blocking tight end. He’s a ferocious blocker and was used as a puller at times. He’s a power player with limited pass catching skills. He did catch 35 passes for 371 yards and six touchdowns at Yale.
Accepted invitations, but are not on the rosters released on Monday:
Tate Ratledge, OG, Georgia, 6-6, 320: Played in 38 games over his career, including 10 last season. He was named Associated Press All-America third-team and Associated Press and Coaches first-team All-SEC. He was suffered knee and ankle injuries in conference opener against Kentucky and missed the next four games before returning to action against Florida.
Jared Wilson, C, Georgia, 6-3, 310: He played in 34 career games for the Bulldogs over the past four seasons. He was a two-year starter. He was named to the Coaches’ second-team All-SEC team. In 2023, he played in 13 of 14 games and was part of the unit that ranked first in the SEC and seventh nationally in sacks allowed (0.93). He helped Georgia’s offense finish second in the SEC and fifth in the nation in total offense (496.5), offensive passing efficiency (168.21) and scoring offense (40.1).
Georgia is well represented in this year’s Senior Bowl, with five players from the state set to showcase their skills in the prestigious college football all-star game. Additionally, one player from Georgia Tech will also be competing, adding to the talent pool from the Peach State.The five players from Georgia competing in the Senior Bowl are:

“I love (cornerback) Upton Stout from Western Kentucky,” Nagy said. “He’s just an easy guy to like. You put on the tape and he’s just super urgent. He’s flying around.”
Here’s a look at the Georgia players and the Georgia Tech representative (height, weight, other measurements recorded at Senior Bowl):
Trevor Etienne, RB, Georgia, 5-foot-8, 202 pounds: He spent his first two seasons at Florida before transferring to Georgia for the 2024 season. He rushed 122 times for 609 yards and nine touchdowns for the Bulldogs. He rushed 371 times for 2,081 yards and 23 touchdowns over his career. He’s a dependable pass-catcher. He caught 62 of 63 targets over his career for 432 yards and a touchdown. He missed some time last season with a rib injury.
Arian Smith, WR, Georgia, 6-0, 185: He played in 47 games for the Bulldogs. He caught 68 passes for 1,356 yards (19.9 yard per catch) and 10 touchdowns. His injury history will scare off some teams. He was credited with 10 dropped passes heading into the Sugar Bowl by pro football focus.
Dan Jackson, DB, Georgia, 5-11, 194: He was a walk-on at Georgia after playing at North Hall High. He made two big plays in Georgia’s 44-42 eight-overtime win over Georgia Tech last season. Against the Yellow Jackets, Jackson made the late-fourth-quarter hit on quarterback Haynes King that caused a fumble. In overtime, Jackson’s sack of King led to one of the seven scoreless periods for Tech in extra time. He was a Coaches’ All-SEC third-team pick last season. He made 12 starts and played in 13 games.
Smael Mondon Jr., LB, Georgia, 6-2 3/8, 229: The former Paulding County High standout was a five star recruit. Played early in his career. He played in 51 games and had 212 tackles and 18 tackles for losses. He also showed some pass-rush ability with eight sacks.
Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, DL, Georgia, 6-4, 276: Played in 37 games for the Bulldogs over four seasons. He played mostly in reserve and rotational roles. He made three tackles, including two for a combined loss of eight yards in the SEC opener win over Kentucky to earn SEC defensive lineman of the week award last season.
Jackson Hawes, TE, Georgia Tech, 6-4, 252, 79-inch wing span: The Yale (2019-2023) transfer was used primarily as a blocking tight end. He’s a ferocious blocker and was used as a puller at times. He’s a power player with limited pass catching skills. He did catch 35 passes for 371 yards and six touchdowns at Yale.
Accepted invitations, but are not on the rosters released on Monday:
Tate Ratledge, OG, Georgia, 6-6, 320: Played in 38 games over his career, including 10 last season. He was named Associated Press All-America third-team and Associated Press and Coaches first-team All-SEC. He was suffered knee and ankle injuries in conference opener against Kentucky and missed the next four games before returning to action against Florida.
Jared Wilson, C, Georgia, 6-3, 310: He played in 34 career games for the Bulldogs over the past four seasons. He was a two-year starter. He was named to the Coaches’ second-team All-SEC team. In 2023, he played in 13 of 14 games and was part of the unit that ranked first in the SEC and seventh nationally in sacks allowed (0.93). He helped Georgia’s offense finish second in the SEC and fifth in the nation in total offense (496.5), offensive passing efficiency (168.21) and scoring offense (40.1).

5. DJ Daniel, cornerback from the University of Georgia

Keith Taylor, Jr., cornerback from the University of Washington (hometown: Decatur, Georgia)These talented athletes will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete against some of the best players in college football, all while representing the state of Georgia on a national stage.
