Icy conditions impact region Thursday morning

METEOROLOGIST TOM TASSELMYER. WELL, WE’VE GOT SOME WINTER WEATHER MOVING IN TONIGHT, BUT NOTHING LIKE WHAT WAS HAPPENING 15 YEARS AGO WHEN WE HAD THE FIRST OF TWO MAJOR SNOWSTORMS IN ONE WEEK ROLLING IN ON THE FIFTH AND 6TH OF FEBRUARY, 2010. 38IN OF SNOW IN ELKRIDGE. THAT’S JUST AN INCREDIBLE SNOWFALL UP HERE ON TV HILL. WE HAD 28IN BWI MARSHALL 25 AND FOUR DAYS LATER THE NEXT 20 INCH SNOWSTORM ROLLED THROUGH. THAT WEEK. IN FEBRUARY OF 2010, ABOUT 50IN OF SNOW FELL IN JUST SIX DAYS. SO WINTER WEATHER, WE ARE RIGHT IN THE HEART OF IT NOW. THE SEASON THAT BRINGS US THESE STORMS. TONIGHT IT WILL BE ICE, NOT SNOW. 34 FOR THE LOW SO FAR AT BWI MARSHALL AND A HIGH OF 39 THAT 39 FIVE DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. BUT WE’RE ALMOST BACK DOWN TO THE LOW FOR THE DAY AT THE AIRPORT. STILL ABOVE FREEZING THOUGH, THEY’RE 37 HERE IN BALTIMORE AND I JUST STEPPED OUTSIDE. AND WE DO HAVE SOME NOW. RAIN FALLING IN OUR AREA WITH A LITTLE BIT OF SLEET MIXED IN HERE ON TV HILL IN NORTHWEST BALTIMORE. YOU GO A LITTLE FARTHER NORTH, THOUGH, AND IT’S COLDER. 32 IN ABERDEEN, BELOW FREEZING IN FAIR HILL, 31 IN MANCHESTER AND 26 UP AT CAMP DAVID. SO THESE AREAS ARE GOING TO BE MOST PRONE TO GETTING ICY ACCUMULATION. NOTICE CLARKSVILLE ALSO THERE IN HOWARD COUNTY AND MOUNT AIRY DOWN TO 30. SO THERE ARE SOME COLD SPOTS, MAINLY NORTH AND WEST OF BALTIMORE WHERE THE ICY CONDITIONS ARE GOING TO BE THE WORST. AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT AND INTO TOMORROW MORNING, RADAR IS TRYING TO PICK UP ON SOME SNOW UP IN THE CLOUDS. BUT AGAIN, I JUST STEPPED OUTSIDE. MOST OF IT IS RAIN OR A LITTLE BIT OF SLEET FALLING TO THE GROUND, AND MOST OF THE PRECIPITATION IS STILL TO THE WEST OF US. SO ALL THIS HAS TO MOVE THROUGH. BUT NOTICE WE’RE SITTING RIGHT ON THE EDGE OF A FRONT TO OUR SOUTH 40S IN THE CAROLINAS, ABOUT 65 DEGREES RIGHT NOW IN KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE, 34 DEGREES IN CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA. SO THIS LITTLE RIBBON OF COLD AIR AND MOISTURE COMING THROUGH THE AREA WILL PRODUCE THE ICY WEATHER. THE WORST OF THE WEATHER IS GOING TO BE FROM MIDNIGHT UNTIL ABOUT 4 OR 5:00 IN THE MORNING. YOU CAN SEE ALL THIS PINK ON FUTURECAST. THAT’S THE FREEZING RAIN FALLING IN THOSE AREAS TO THE SOUTH. IT’S JUST RAIN. AND THEN OVERNIGHT, AS WE HEAD TOWARD 630 IN THE MORNING, THE ICY CONDITIONS GET PUSHED EVEN FARTHER TO THE PENNSYLVANIA LINE, WITH THE MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN COMING DOWN IN PARTS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN MARYLAND JUST TO OUR SOUTH. AND THEN WE’RE PRETTY MUCH DONE WITH THE STORM SYSTEM BY ABOUT 9 OR 10 IN THE MORNING, WITH SOME CLEARING IN THE AFTERNOON THAT COULD PUSH THE TEMPERATURE CLOSE TO 50 LATER IN THE DAY. SO ICY IN THE VERY EARLY MORNING, THEN RAIN, AND THEN FINALLY CLEARING UP IN THE AFTERNOON. IMPACT WEATHER. AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT AND INTO TOMORROW MORNING, WITH THE FREEZING RAIN BECOMING THE PREDOMINANT PRECIPITATION TYPE, THAT’S JUST RAIN THAT FREEZES ON CONTACT WITH THE COLD SURFACE TOMORROW AFTERNOON, WITH A LITTLE BIT OF CLEARING UP UPPER 40S TO NEAR 50 AS THE WINDS SHIFT TO THE SOUTHWEST. SO IMPACT WEATHER FOR THE EARLY MORNING AND THEN GETTING BETTER IN THE AFTERNOON. ICY CONDITIONS IN THE MOUNTAINS. THEY’LL HAVE A WINTER STORM OR ICE STORM WARNING OUT IN WESTERN MARYLAND TOMORROW MORNING. A BREEZY DAY ON FRIDAY, BUT NOT TOO BAD WITH SOME SUNSHINE. AND THEN SATURDAY BRINGS ANOTHER MIX OF RAIN, SLEET AND WET SNOW IN THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. DRY WEATHER SUNDA

  • Blues finally green light big-name exit as transfer conditions are set in stone

AC Milan are confident they can bring Chelsea misfit Joao Felix to the Italian giants before the transfer window shuts, TEAMtalk can reveal.

The Portugal international swapped Atletico Madrid for Chelsea last summer for a fee in the region of £45.5 million (€53m, $59m) but he has struggled for game time thus far.

Felix, who had a loan spell with the Blues in the second half of the 2022/23 season, has made 20 appearances in all competitions this term but he has just three Premier League starts to his name.

Head coach Enzo Maresca admitted it is “difficult” to hand regular minutes to the 25-year-old, particularly when Cole Palmer has been the club’s standout attacker.

TEAMtalk previously revealed that Milan wanted to complete a deal for the former Barcelona loanee, with head coach Sergio Conceicao a ‘big admirer’ of his talents.

Now, our sources state the Serie A team believe they can get this move over the line, with Chelsea giving a loan move the green light. We understand that a buy option is not out of the question and Felix himself is pushing for a San Siro transfer.

Furthermore, Chelsea are evaluating all loan options, so it is not set in stone that Milan seal the deal with this one.

DON’T MISS: Fabrizio Romano gives two Chelsea exits Here we Go confirmation as FOUR departures hurtle closer

Maresca admits to ‘difficult’ Felix situation

With Nicolas Jackson leading Chelsea’s attack and Palmer often behind him, that has made it difficult for the versatile Felix and Christopher Nkunku to get much of a look in.

Both have been linked with a Stamford Bridge exit, something Maresca has not ruled out.

“The only thing I’ve said since the start of this season is that it’s difficult to play him with so many attacking players. In my idea it means that if Joao plays, it means Cole [Palmer] doesn’t play. Or, if Joao [Felix] plays he has to play with Cole together, but it depends on the game,” he said last month.

“For me it’s quite easy, we have three players but they are more or less similar; Cole, Joao and Christopher Nkunku. Joao played some games, Christopher also played and they both started against Ipswich and Southampton they played, Leicester they played.

“Some games they can both play together, but not every game because every game is a bit different.”

Chelsea transfer roundup: Garnacho latest, Man City ace targeted

All eyes are on whether or not Alejandro Garnacho will leave Manchester United before the transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday.

The Chelsea-linked winger is said to be interested in a Blues move but there are a number of reasons why that may not happen.

Chelsea are reportedly plotting a last-ditch move for Manchester City star Nico O’Reilly, after giving up on United’s Kobbie Mainoo.

The 19-year-old would be a cheaper option, as would Saint-Etienne midfielder Mathis Amougou.

Finally, Tottenham are trying to gazump Chelsea in the race to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi – who is into the last 18 months of his contract.

Who has been Chelsea’s biggest flop of the Todd Boehly era?

After weeks of speculation and negotiations, Blues have finally given the green light for a big-name exit as transfer conditions have been set in stone. The player in question has been the subject of intense interest from several top clubs, but it seems that a deal is finally in the works.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting news of this transfer, and now it seems that their wishes will soon be granted. The player’s departure is sure to have a significant impact on the team, but with the transfer conditions now firmly established, it looks like the move is all but certain.

Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting transfer saga unfolds.

  • The Role of Remote Monitoring in Managing Chronic Conditions

The Role of Remote Monitoring in Managing Chronic Conditions

Remote monitoring technology is revolutionizing the way healthcare providers manage chronic conditions. By allowing patients to track their vital signs and symptoms from the comfort of their own homes, remote monitoring has the potential to improve outcomes, reduce hospitalizations, and lower healthcare costs.

Chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension require ongoing management and monitoring to prevent complications and optimize health. Traditionally, patients with these conditions would need to visit their healthcare provider regularly for check-ups and monitoring. However, this can be time-consuming and inconvenient for both the patient and the provider.

Remote monitoring technology allows patients to take control of their own health by tracking their vital signs, such as blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and heart rate, using devices such as wearable sensors, smart scales, and smartphone apps. This data is then sent to their healthcare provider in real-time, allowing for early intervention if any abnormalities are detected.

The benefits of remote monitoring in managing chronic conditions are clear. Patients can receive more personalized and timely care, as their healthcare provider can monitor their condition on a continuous basis and make adjustments to their treatment plan as needed. This can lead to better outcomes, such as improved blood sugar control in diabetics or reduced blood pressure in hypertensive patients.

Remote monitoring also has the potential to reduce hospitalizations and emergency room visits. By detecting changes in a patient’s condition early on, healthcare providers can intervene before a serious complication occurs, preventing the need for costly hospitalizations and emergency treatments.

In addition, remote monitoring can help to lower healthcare costs by reducing the need for frequent office visits and unnecessary tests. By monitoring patients remotely, healthcare providers can focus their resources on patients who truly need in-person care, leading to more efficient and cost-effective healthcare delivery.

Overall, remote monitoring technology is playing an increasingly important role in managing chronic conditions. By empowering patients to take control of their own health and providing healthcare providers with real-time data on their patients’ conditions, remote monitoring has the potential to improve outcomes, reduce hospitalizations, and lower healthcare costs. As technology continues to advance, the role of remote monitoring in managing chronic conditions will only continue to grow.

  • Sepp Straka, contenders set to face rainy, gusty weather conditions at Pebble Beach

Sepp Straka escaped much of the nasty weather on Friday at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

He likely won’t be so lucky on Saturday.

Straka fired a second straight 7-under 65, this time at Pebble Beach Golf Links, to take a three-shot lead. Straka benefitted from about 14 holes in little to no wind, while other challengers, including Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, teed off later and spent more time in the tougher conditions.

Now, though, McIlroy and Scheffler are on the better end of the draw. While tournament officials will send the field off split tees and in threesomes, Straka will still tee off at 1:35 p.m. local time, nearly two and a half hours after the first group.

According to the PGA Tour’s official weather bulletin, winds are expected to ramp up around noon, with 14-20 mph sustained and 28 mph gusts forecasted through at least 2 p.m. The 4 p.m. forecast calls for 10-16 mph sustained and 25 mph gusts. There is a 60% chance of rain at noon and 2 p.m., while temperatures are not expected to get into the 60s.

“Just kind of accepting bad shots, that’s where the patience comes in,” said Straka, who also is battling the lingering effects of the flu. “You’re going to get the wind wrong every now and then if it gusts up, and these greens are tiny, so small mistakes can have a big outcome.”

Some players in early groups have already started to make moves, too, including Scheffler, who was 3 under through five holes and 10 under overall, four back of Straka, before Straka teed off.

As the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am gets underway, players like Sepp Straka and other contenders are gearing up to face some challenging weather conditions. The forecast calls for rainy and gusty weather throughout the tournament, adding an extra layer of difficulty to an already tough course.

Sepp Straka, coming off a strong performance at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, will need to rely on his skill and mental toughness to navigate the wet and windy conditions at Pebble Beach. With his accurate ball-striking and solid putting, Straka has the game to contend no matter what the weather throws at him.

Other top contenders, including past champions and major winners, will also be looking to embrace the adverse conditions and use them to their advantage. The unpredictable nature of the weather at Pebble Beach can lead to exciting and unexpected outcomes, making for an exciting tournament for fans to watch.

As players like Sepp Straka and others prepare to battle the elements, they will need to stay focused, patient, and adaptable in order to come out on top. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am promises to be a true test of skill and resilience, with the weather adding an extra element of drama to an already prestigious event. Stay tuned to see how the players handle the rainy, gusty conditions and who will emerge victorious in the end.

  • Concussion substitute rules explained: What the ICC playing conditions say?

Harshit Rana was named as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube during the fourth T20I between India and England in Pune on Friday.

Rana returned three wickets for 33 runs in his four overs and played a vital role in India’s defence of 182 runs. India won the match by 15 runs.

According to the broadcasters, English captain Jos Buttler was unhappy with this substitution since Dube, an all-rounder, was replaced by Harshit, primarily a pacer.

The change sparked a debate over the exact rules related to the change and what the term ‘Like-for-like replacement’ signifies in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) playing conditions.

The rule 1.2.7 of ICC’s Men’s T20I playing guidelines deals with concussion substitutes.

According to the rule,”the ICC Match Referee should ordinarily approve a Concussion Replacement Request if the replacement is a like-for-like player whose inclusion will not excessively advantage his/her team for the remainder of the match.”

Sub-sections, 1.2.7.4 and 1.2.7.5, add, “in assessing whether the nominated Concussion Replacement should be considered a like-for-like player, the ICC Match Referee should consider the likely role the concussed player would have played during the remainder of the match, and the normal role that would be performed by the nominated Concussion Replacement.

“If the ICC Match Referee believes that the inclusion of the nominated Concussion Replacement, when performing their normal role, would excessively advantage their team, the ICC Match Referee may impose such conditions upon the identity and involvement of the Concussion Replacement as he/she sees fit, in line with the overriding objective of facilitating a like-for-like replacement for the concussed player.”

Concussion substitute rules explained: What the ICC playing conditions say

In recent years, there has been a significant focus on player safety in sports, particularly in cricket. One of the key changes made by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to ensure the safety of players is the introduction of concussion substitute rules.

According to the ICC playing conditions, if a player is suspected of having suffered a concussion during a match, the team can apply for a concussion substitute. The substitute must be a like-for-like replacement, meaning they must be a similar type of player (batsman for batsman, bowler for bowler, etc).

The match referee will then assess the player and make a decision on whether a concussion substitute is necessary. If approved, the substitute can take the field and the injured player will not be allowed to return to the match.

It is important to note that the concussion substitute rules are not meant to be abused by teams. If it is deemed that a team has used the rule inappropriately, they may face penalties from the match referee.

Overall, the ICC playing conditions regarding concussion substitutes are aimed at prioritizing player safety and ensuring that players are not put at risk of further injury. These rules are a positive step towards making cricket a safer sport for all involved.

  • Putin is creating conditions to violate any future peace agreements with Ukraine – ISW

    Vladimir Putin. Photo: Getty Images

Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggest that Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s statements about the illegitimacy of the Ukrainian government and a possible future peace deal could become a tool to justify violating any agreements with Ukraine.

    Source: ISW

Quote: “Putin claimed that any peace agreement that Russia and Ukraine conclude before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rescinds his 2022 decree will be invalid. However, even if the Ukrainian side agrees to cancel this decree, Putin is likely to find new reasons to violate the agreements.”

    Advertisement:

Details: ISW notes that the Kremlin is creating a legal basis for ignoring future agreements by manipulating false interpretations of Ukrainian law.

Putin has already stated that Zelenskyy has lost legitimacy by not holding elections in 2024 during martial law and that the Verkhovna Rada is allegedly the only legitimate branch of government. At the same time, he calls for unconstitutional actions that can be used to declare this body “illegitimate” to justify his demands for a complete regime change in Kyiv and his unwillingness to negotiate with the Ukrainian authorities.

Such statements give Putin room for manipulation, analysts say. Even if agreements are reached, Russia could quickly violate them, citing false accusations of invalid agreements or the illegitimacy of the Ukrainian government. The Kremlin has used similar tactics before, violating the Minsk agreements of 2014 and 2015.

Quote: “Even if Zelenskyy or other parts of the Ukrainian government agreed to lift the decree banning negotiations with Putin, Putin would likely violate any peace or other agreement that he reaches with Ukraine under the false justification that such agreements are ‘invalid’ as long as he believes that he can achieve his maximalist war aims through military operations.”

To quote the ISW’s Key Takeaways on 29 January:

    • Russian leader Vladimir Putin stated that Western military assistance remains vital to Ukraine’s ability to maintain its defence against Russian aggression.
    • Putin’s long-standing theory of victory relies on the assumption that the West will abandon Ukraine, and only unwavering Western support and consistent deliveries of Western military assistance to Kyiv can force Putin to abandon his theory and accept the need to offer the concessions necessary for any resolution to the conflict acceptable to the US, Europe, and Ukraine.
    • Putin indicated that he will not view any peace agreement with Ukraine as binding by claiming that the Ukrainian government is either unwilling or unable to rescind the 2022 Ukrainian presidential decree banning negotiations with Putin.
    • Putin’s statements rejecting the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government and of a possible future peace agreement set conditions for Russia to justify violating any future agreements with Ukraine.
    • Putin continues efforts to coerce US President Donald Trump into bilateral negotiations that exclude Ukraine, impose his desired negotiations framework on Trump, and compel Trump to inadvertently endorse ongoing Russian information operations about the illegitimacy of the current Ukrainian government.
    • Ukrainian forces conducted a drone strike at the Russian oil refinery in Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and reportedly hit a Russian arsenal in Tver Oblast on the night of 28-29 January.
    • The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed in a post on 29 January that Lieutenant General Alexander Sanchik is the commander of the Russian Southern Grouping of Forces.
    • Ukrainian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast and near Toretsk, and Russian forces recently advanced near the Lyman, Chasiv Yar, Toretsk, Pokrovsk, Kurakhove, Velyka Novosilka, Robotyne, and Dnipro fronts.
    • Volunteer recruitment rates in Moscow have dropped sharply, as Russian citizens grow increasingly unwilling to serve in Ukraine.

Support UP or become our patron!

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) recently released a report detailing how Russian President Vladimir Putin is creating conditions that would allow him to violate any future peace agreements with Ukraine.

According to the report, Putin has been ramping up military activities in eastern Ukraine and deploying additional troops to the region. This includes the recent buildup of Russian forces near the Ukrainian border, as well as ongoing military exercises in Crimea.

ISW warns that these actions are a clear indication that Putin is not interested in achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Instead, he is laying the groundwork to potentially launch further military aggression in the future.

The report also highlights how Putin’s actions are undermining diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine. By creating conditions that could lead to a breakdown of any future peace agreements, he is effectively sabotaging international efforts to bring about a lasting solution to the crisis.

In light of these developments, ISW is calling for increased international pressure on Russia to cease its aggressive actions in Ukraine and to uphold its commitments to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Failure to do so, the report warns, could have serious consequences for regional stability and security.

  • Conditions that fueled California fires were more likely due to climate change: report

    The Summary

    • The hot, dry, windy conditions that led to the recent Southern California fires were about 35% more likely because of climate change, a new report says.
    • The findings come from the World Weather Attribution group, which analyzes the influence of global warming on extreme events.
    • The fires have killed at least 29 people and destroyed more than 16,000 buildings.

Climate change increased the likelihood of the extreme conditions that allowed the recent fires to roar across the Los Angeles area, an international group of scientists said Tuesday.

The hot, dry and windy conditions that preceded the fires were about 35% more likely because of human-caused global warming, according to a new report from the World Weather Attribution group, which analyzes the influence of global warming on extreme events.

The fires, which started during a ferocious windstorm and after almost no rain had fallen in greater Los Angeles since the spring, have killed at least 29 people and torched more than 16,000 buildings, including homes, stores and schools.

“This was a perfect storm when it comes to conditions for fire disasters — the ingredients in terms of the climate enabling, the weather driving the fires and the huge built environment right downwind from where these ignitions occurred,” John Abatzoglou, a professor of climatology at the University of California, Merced, who contributed to the report, said at a news conference.

Compared to a preindustrial time before fossil fuels were widely used, there are now 23 extra days of “dry season” on average each year in the Los Angeles region, the report said, making it more likely that fires will coincide with seasonal Santa Ana winds.

Park Williams, a professor of geography at UCLA and an author of the report, said fires during cool seasons in Southern California require four conditions: widespread grass or brush that can burn, abnormally dry conditions, an ignition (which almost always comes from a person; and extreme weather, like the recent windstorm. He described each of those conditions as an individual switch in a system that requires all four to be flipped on for light to emanate.

“The artificial warming due to human-caused climate change is making the light brighter,” Williams said.

The authors of the report analyzed weather and climate models to evaluate how a warmer atmosphere is shifting the likelihood of fire weather (meaning conditions that increase the risk of wildfire). They also tracked how a metric called the Fire Weather Index changed over time. The index tracks temperature, relative humidity and wind speeds, all factors that contribute to the likelihood of fire.

The researchers found that the kind of conditions that drove the L.A. area fires are expected to occur on average once in 17 years in today’s climate. Such conditions would have been expected once every 23 years without climate change and would have been less extreme when they did occur, the report says.

A recent report has found that the conditions that fueled the devastating California wildfires were more likely due to climate change than any other factor. The report, conducted by a team of climate scientists and researchers, highlights the role of rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and increased fuel loads in creating the perfect storm for the unprecedented wildfires that swept through the state.

According to the report, the combination of record-breaking heat waves, dry vegetation, and strong winds created ideal conditions for the rapid spread of wildfires in California. These conditions were exacerbated by climate change, which has been linked to more frequent and severe wildfires in recent years.

The report also notes that climate change is projected to continue worsening wildfire conditions in the future, posing a growing threat to communities and ecosystems across California. As temperatures rise and droughts become more severe, the risk of wildfires is expected to increase, making it imperative for policymakers to take action to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Overall, the report underscores the urgent need for climate action to address the root causes of wildfires in California and protect the state’s residents, wildlife, and natural resources. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, investing in sustainable land management practices, and strengthening wildfire prevention measures, we can help prevent future disasters and build a more resilient future for California.

  • With leaked footage from the inside, Sundance doc shows horrifying conditions in Alabama prisons

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Incarcerated men in the Alabama prison system risked their safety to feed shocking footage of their horrifying living conditions to a pair of documentary filmmakers. The result is “The Alabama Solution,” which premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City.

Filmmakers Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman became interested in Alabama prisons in 2019. Jarecki, the filmmaker behind “The Jinx” and “Capturing the Friedmans,” and Kaufman first gained access to the restricted grounds through a visit with a chaplain during a revival meeting held in the prison yards. There men pulled them aside and whispered shocking stories about the reality of life inside: forced labor, drugs, violence, intimidation, retaliation and the undisclosed truths behind many prisoner deaths.

The Associated Press has written extensively about the problems in the state’s prison system, including high rates of violence, low staffing, a plummeting parole rate and the use of pandemic funds to build a new supersized prison.

This process eventually led them to incarcerated activists Melvin Ray and Robert Earl Council (also known as “Kinetik Justice”) who had for years been trying to expose the horrifying conditions and deep- seated corruption across the system. They helped feed dispatches to the filmmakers with contraband cellphones.

“We’re deeply concerned for their safety, and we have been since the first time we met them,” said Kaufman. “They’ve been doing this work for decades and as you see in the film, they’ve been retaliated against in very extreme ways. But there are lawyers who are ready to do wellness checks and visit them and respond to any sort of retaliation that may come.”

On Tuesday at the first showing of the film, she had Council on the phone listening in. They put the microphone up to the cellphone so that Council could speak.

“We thank you all for listening, for being interested,” Council said. “On behalf of the brothers of Alabama, I thank you all.”

Several family members of their incarcerated subjects were also in the audience, including Sandy Ray, the mother of Steven Davis, who died in 2019 at William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, his face beaten beyond recognition. Prison officials said Davis was killed in self-defense because he didn’t put down his weapons. The prisoners tell a vastly different story.

Alelur “Alex” Duran, who spent 12 years in prison in New York, also helped produce the film. Jarecki said they wouldn’t have taken on the subject without the expertise of someone who had been incarcerated.

“What you’re seeing in this film is going on all over the nation,” Duran said.

Also embedded in the story is Alabama’s long history of contracting prisoners to do work at private companies from Burger King to Best Western, an issue that the AP investigated for over two years. The cheap, reliable labor force has generated more than $250 million for the state since 2000 — money garnished from prisoners’ paychecks, the AP wrote in December. Parole numbers have also plummeted in recent years.

“We want to show viewers the truth about a system that has been cloaked in secrecy,” Jarecki said. “We hope the film sparks an effort to allow access for journalists and others so the public can have transparency into how incarcerated citizens are treated and how our tax dollars are being spent. We hope to inspire Alabama’s leadership to acknowledge the crisis and to overhaul its prison system and its use of forced labor.”

The film will have a theatrical release before it debuts on HBO sometime this year, but the specific dates and details are still being worked out. And while it is in its early days, the impact, Jarecki said, has already been seen, including in a class action labor lawsuit.

The recent release of leaked footage from inside Alabama prisons has shed light on the horrifying conditions that inmates are subjected to on a daily basis. A new documentary set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, titled “Inside Alabama Prisons,” captures the reality of life behind bars in the state’s correctional facilities.

The footage, obtained by undercover journalists, shows overcrowded cells, unsanitary living conditions, and widespread violence among inmates. In one particularly disturbing scene, a guard is seen brutally beating a handcuffed prisoner, highlighting the systemic issues of abuse and neglect within the prison system.

The documentary aims to expose the harsh realities of life for inmates in Alabama prisons and spark a conversation about the urgent need for reform. Director Sarah Johnson hopes that by bringing these shocking images to light, viewers will be inspired to take action and advocate for change in the criminal justice system.

As the film makes its debut at Sundance, it serves as a stark reminder of the inhumane treatment that many inmates endure behind bars. It is a call to action for all to stand up against the injustices within the prison system and fight for the rights and dignity of those who are incarcerated.

  • Snowy Wednesday in Maine causes tricky travel conditions, more snow on tap later this week

PORTLAND (WGME)— Snow will taper off by Wednesday afternoon with a few lingering snow showers or squalls in Maine.

An active pattern continues with more snowfall chances through the weekend.

Steady snow will give way to a few lingering snow showers or squalls Wednesday afternoon.

Highs will range from near 40 in southern Maine to 20s across central and northern Maine.

Bitter cold is back for Thursday.

Highs will only be in the teens with sunny skies and breezy winds.

Our next storm likely arrives on Friday afternoon.

There is still considerable uncertainty with this forecast, but at this point it looks like mostly snow with possibly some rain mixing in in far southern Maine.

Snow and possibly some rain will continue into Friday night, wrapping up very early on Saturday.

Cold air is then back for Saturday with highs in the teens or low 20s under sunny skies.

Sunday will start out quiet, but will turn more active for the afternoon and evening.

Another round of snowfall is looking likely into Sunday night, but overall amounts look light at this time.

Due to a milder Monday, if precipitation persists into the day it would likely change to rain. However, most precipitation will likely fall Sunday night as all snow.

As a winter storm swept through Maine on Wednesday, blanketing the state with several inches of snow, travel conditions became treacherous for commuters and residents alike. The heavy snowfall led to slick roads, reduced visibility, and numerous accidents reported on major highways.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of the state, warning of hazardous travel conditions and urging residents to exercise caution while driving. Snow plows worked tirelessly to clear the roads, but the steady snowfall made it challenging to keep up with the accumulation.

Despite the challenges posed by the storm, Maine residents are no strangers to winter weather, and many were prepared with snow tires, shovels, and warm clothing. Schools and businesses remained open, but some opted to close early or allow employees to work from home to avoid the hazardous conditions.

The winter weather is far from over, as forecasters predict another round of snow later this week. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and be prepared for more winter weather in the days to come. Stay safe and stay warm, Maine!

  • More wind and Red Flag conditions ahead, Monday January 20th forecast

Another cool and cloudy day for most areas as the onshore flow keeps us under a steady ocean breeze. This is excellent news for fire fighting concerns as the abundant humidity and light westerly winds aid in the fire fight. Look for more clouds and fog overnight with mostly light winds and chilly overnight temperatures.

Monday will start out very quiet with more weak onshore winds and very cool temperatures. However, our next offshore wind event with Santa Lucias in our north and the very dangerous Santa Anas in Southern California, will likely begin by late morning. Unfortunately, our computer models are now seeing some key ingredients fall in line to make this a strong and even severe event. This means portions of Ventura County could see winds well above 60 mph. Hopefully the winds won’t get that strong, but as mentioned, the variables are there that could make this a very strong event. A Red Flag Warning is back in effect with more wind watches posted which will likely be elevated to warnings as we move in to early Monday. The winds are expected to last through mid day Tuesday and then drop off quickly. The poor fire fighting conditions will linger through mid week and maybe even in to Thursday as humidity usually takes a day or two to start rising after a strong offshore wind ends. Temperatures will stay on the cool side despite the usual warming from the offshore winds as cold air drifts in from the north and helps to bolster the winds.  A very weak chance for showers does come in to play by next weekend and while this is positive news, it may end up being minimal at best or yet another wind maker.
