  • Causeway officials work to clear bridge as icy conditions persist


    MANDEVILLE, La. (WVUE) – Crews brought in heavy equipment today to clear the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, which remained closed due to dangerous icy conditions. Officials are hopeful at least one lane will reopen for first responders Thursday afternoon.

    Across the North Shore, many roadways were becoming passable, though treacherous patches of black ice continued to threaten drivers. Despite repeated warnings to stay off the roads, more and more vehicles ventured out.

    “Obviously, it’s a beautiful day, and a lot of people need to be reminded there’s still thick layers of black ice on the highways,” said Louisiana State Police Troop L Trooper Marc Gremillion.

    As the sun shone on the icy streets, major roadways such as U.S. Highway 190 south of Covington gradually became more accessible.

    However, some drivers struggled to gain traction, with vehicles fishtailing and skidding.

    “It’s scary,” said Rene Hymel of Covington. “I lived in Connecticut and Cleveland, so I have an all-wheel-drive, but there are a lot of icy patches.”

    In some cases, drivers took to any available dry patches, leading to near-misses, including a close call between a passenger vehicle and an 18-wheeler near Covington’s Claiborne Hill.

    WINTER BLAST

    While some roadways improved, others remained slick with ice, leaving those with four-wheel drive at an advantage.

    “It’s been really slick and icy, but this truck does good with four-wheel drive,” said Michelle Carey, a certified nurse assistant from Covington. “I’m pretty good with it.”

    Carey said she had to brave the hazardous conditions to get to work.

    The icy conditions brought many North Shore residents an unexpected day off.

    “I’m glad I have a nine- and a 10-year-old,” Hymel added. “They had fun, and I hope everyone stays safe.”

    Meanwhile, crews worked diligently at the Causeway to remove hundreds of tons of ice and snow.

    Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said efforts to clear the bridge would continue through the night, with hopes of reopening by tomorrow.

  • Ozempic and similar weight loss drugs may lower risk of 42 health conditions, but also pose risks


    Several years ago, a little-known drug named Ozempic – previously used only to treat diabetes – emerged as a promising new drug for weight management.

    The Food and Drug Administration’s approval of Ozempic in 2021 for weight loss treatment ushered in a new era for the class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, or GLP-1.

    Today, GLP-1 drugs, including Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound, have become household names and key tools in the fight against obesity: 1 in 8 American adults say they have used a GLP-1 drug, and forecasts show that by 2030, 1 in 10 Americans will likely be using these medications.

    Now, research from my lab and others suggests that GLP-1 drugs could help treat dozens of other ailments as well, including cognitive issues and addiction problems. However, my colleagues and I also found previously unidentified risks.

    I am a physician-scientist and I direct a clinical epidemiology center focused on addressing public health’s most urgent questions. My team works to address critical knowledge gaps about COVID-19, long COVID, influenza, vaccines, effectiveness and risks of commonly used drugs, and more.

    On Jan. 20, 2025, my team published a study of more than 2.4 million people that evaluated the risks and benefits of GLP-1 drugs across 175 possible health outcomes. We found that these drugs lowered risks of 42 health outcomes, nearly a quarter of the total that we analyzed. These include neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, substance use and addiction disorders, clotting disorders and several other conditions.

    Unfortunately, we also found that GLP-1 drugs come with significant side effects and increase the risk of 19 health conditions we studied, such as gastrointestinal issues, kidney stones and acute pancreatitis, in which the pancreas becomes inflamed and dysfunctional.

    Initially, GLP-1 drugs were developed to treat diabetes.

    Cognitive benefits

    One of the most important health benefits we found was that the GLP-1 drugs lowered the risk of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. These findings align with other research, including evidence from preclinical studies showing that these drugs may reduce inflammation in the brain and enhance the brain’s ability to form and strengthen connections between its cells, improving how they communicate with one another. These effects contribute to mitigating cognitive decline.

    Two other key studies have shown that patients treated with a GLP-1 drug for diabetes had a lower risk of dementia.

    All of these studies strongly point to a potential therapeutic use of GLP-1 drugs in treatment of the cognitive decline. Ongoing randomized trials – the gold standard for evaluating new uses of drugs – are looking at the effects of GLP-1 drugs in early Alzheimer’s disease, with results expected later in 2025.

    Curbing addiction and suicidal ideation

    GLP-1 drugs have also demonstrated potential in reducing risks of several substance use disorders such as those involving alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, opioids and stimulants. This may be due to the ability of these drugs to modulate reward pathways, impulse control and inflammatory processes in the brain.

    The effectiveness of GLP-1 drugs in curbing addictive behavior may explain their spectacular success in treating obesity, a chronic disease state that many have suggested is indeed a food addiction disorder.

    Our study demonstrated a reduced risk of suicidal thoughts and self-harm among people using GLP-1 drugs. This finding is particularly significant given earlier reports of suicidal thoughts and self-injury in people using GLP-1 drugs. In response to those reports, the European Medicines Agency conducted a review of all available data and concluded that there was no evidence of increased risk of suicidality in people using GLP-1 drugs.

    Now at least two studies, including our own, show that GLP-1 drugs actually reduce the risk of suicidality.

    Other benefits

    In addition to the well-documented effects of GLP-1 drugs in reducing risks of adverse cardiovascular and kidney outcomes, our study shows a significant effect in reducing risk of blood clotting as well as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

    One puzzling finding in our study is the reduced risk of infectious diseases such as pneumonia and sepsis. Our data complements another recent study that came to a similar conclusion showing that GLP-1 drugs reduced risk of cardiovascular death and death due to infectious causes, primarily COVID-19.

    This is especially important since COVID-19 is regarded as a significant cardiovascular risk factor. Whether GLP-1 drugs completely offset the increased risk of cardiovascular disease associated with COVID-19 needs to be thoroughly evaluated.

    GLP-1 drugs may also be useful in treating fatty liver disease and conditions ranging from asthma to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, depression and eye disorders.

    Some doctors are prescribing GLP-1 drugs to help with fertility issues.

    Risks and challenges

    Despite their broad therapeutic potential, GLP-1 drugs are not without risks.

    Gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea, vomiting, constipation and gastroesophageal reflux disease are among the most common adverse effects associated with GLP-1 drugs.

    Our study also identified other risks, including low blood pressure, sleep problems, headaches, formation of kidney stones, and gall bladder disease and diseases associated with the bile ducts. We also saw increased risks of drug-induced inflammation of the kidneys and pancreas – both serious conditions that can result in long-term health problems. These findings underscore the importance of careful monitoring in people who are taking GLP-1 medications.

    A significant challenge with using GLP-1 drugs is the high rates at which patients stop using them, often driven by their exorbitant cost or the emergence of adverse effects. Discontinuation can lead to rapid weight gain.

    That’s a problem, because obesity is a chronic disease. GLP-1 drugs provide effective treatment but do not address the underlying causes of obesity and metabolic dysfunction. As a result, GLP-1 drugs need to be taken long term to sustain their effectiveness and prevent rebound weight gain.

    In addition, many questions remain about the long-term effectiveness and risks of these drugs as well as whether there are differences between GLP-1 formulations. Addressing these questions is critical to guide clinical practice.

  • Fire weather conditions persist in San Diego County, residents urged to prepare


    SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With several brush fires erupting around San Diego County this week, dangerous conditions continued across the region on Thursday.

    A Red Flag Warning remained active for inland and mountain communities through Friday morning, which means it could be another busy day for local fire crews.

    The past few days have demonstrated how quickly the Santa Ana winds can cause fires to spark and spread.

    On Wednesday, the Bernardo Fire scorched parts of Rancho Bernardo, burning 7 acres and threatening homes before it was contained.

    Firefighters told ABC 10News the blaze had the potential to destroy 100 acres.

    Firefighters on Tuesday put out the Friars Fire near Fashion Valley Mall in Mission Valley. Crews were able to contain the fire before it could damage any home, but this fire and the Rancho Bernardo blaze both triggered evacuation warnings that forced people to leave their homes.

    “Our main objective was to get our cat and then we got our cat out and yeah, that was it,” a Mission Valley resident told ABC 10News. “We just, we ended up hanging around here just to see kind of if it would escalate or if the firefighters would be able to handle it. And they did such a good job. Like, they were so prepared so thanks to them we’re OK.”

    Fires have destroyed more than 15,000 structures

    As dangerous fire weather conditions continue to blanket southern California, thousands are struggling after losing everything. The American Red Cross is there, providing help and hope with necessities like food, shelter, emotional care, recovery planning and financial assistance.

    More than 15,000 structures have already been destroyed and more could be threatened this week. Unhealthy air quality warnings have been issued as winds continue to blow ash from the fire areas. Everyone should take precautions.

    This morning, more than 600 evacuees woke up in Red Cross shelters, where disaster health volunteers are caring for minor injuries and replacing things like eyeglasses and medications, and mental health workers are providing emotional support to those experiencing unimaginable loss. Caseworkers are helping shelter residents plan their next steps and connect them with other community resources. The top priority is housing, but people also need help with transportation, health care, childcare and other challenges.

    The Red Cross is working closely with local officials, government agencies and other nonprofits to coordinate relief efforts and make recovery plans, including Disaster Recovery Centers in Los Angeles and Pasadena where people can access resources and aid from multiple organizations. Red Cross teams have also formed special task forces with government and community partners to support immediate and long-term needs such as feeding, veteran care and housing.

    Communities are slowly reopening, and Red Crossers will be there with support and relief supplies to help as people return. As many as 730 Red Cross responders are working day and night to make sure people are not alone. Since the fires started over a week ago, the Red Cross has provided more than 10,000 overnight shelter stays and almost 90,000 meals and snacks with the help of partners.

    GET HELP In addition to assisting those currently in our shelters, we are also providing financial assistance to residents who lived within the fire perimeters of Eaton, Palisades, Hurst, and Kenneth as defined by Cal OES. If you receive a call, text or email from the Red Cross, please follow the instructions provided in the message. If you lived within the fire perimeters and aren’t sure you received a message, please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to sign up. To learn more about financial assistance, please visit redcross.org/gethelp.

    We strongly encourage people to apply for federal aid at disasterassistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362. It’s important to know that eligibility for Red Cross assistance is not connected to FEMA. You don’t need approval from FEMA to get help from the Red Cross, and receiving money from the Red Cross won’t impact your eligibility for FEMA assistance or insurance payouts.

    HOW YOU CAN HELP Families are depending on the Red Cross for assistance now, and we need your support. Help people affected by wildfires in California in 2025 by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767) or texting the word CAWILDFIRES to 90999 to make a donation. Your donation enables the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from these disasters.

    As the wildfires continue to burn and dangerous winter weather spreads across the country, the number of Red Cross blood drive cancelations has grown, impacting thousands of lifesaving blood donations. Donors of all blood types — particularly type O negative blood donors and those giving platelets — are needed to help save lives. Where it is safe to do so, we encourage people to schedule a blood donation appointment by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
