  • Texas road conditions map live | Check for icy roads

HOUSTON — An Arctic blast is expected to cause hazardous driving conditions across Texas this week.

In the Houston area, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch that goes into effect Monday evening and lasts through Tuesday afternoon. Winter precipitation, including freezing rain, snow and sleet are possible. This could create dangerous driving conditions.

Ahead of the expected winter weather, many roads were treated with a brine solution to help prevent them from icing over.

If you’re planning on hitting the roads during the winter weather we expect, the Texas Department of Transportation has a statewide map showing road conditions.

Tips for driving on ice or snow

If you have to be on the road, AAA offers these tips for driving in wintry weather.

    • Drive slowly
    • Stay at least five car lengths behind vehicles in front of you.
    • If you hit a patch of ice, don’t panic and slam on the breaks. Once you get past the ice, your vehicle will regain traction.
    • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface, such as on ice and snow.
    • If you have an accident, call for help and stay in your vehicle.

“In a situation like this, you have to remain patient. That is why we recommend that you have an emergency kit inside your vehicle. A blanket non-perishable snacks and some water,” said Joshua Zuber, a spokesperson for AAA.

    • Also keep other cold-weather gear in your car, including warm clothing, gloves and a hat, a flashlight, a window scraper, spray to melt ice on your windshield, a phone charger and jumper cables.

You can find a list of other important items on the AAA Texas website.

Prepare your vehicle for wintry weather

Two parts of your vehicle to check before you hit the road include car battery and your tire pressure and tread.

“Making sure you have the right equipment in your car is vital,” AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster says many stranded motorists suffer from a common problem.

Dead batteries are one of the top roadside emergencies we see during winter storm, cold weather it can make it difficult for an older battery, or one that’s not up to par, to start a vehicle,” Armbruster said.

“Flat tires are another top call we see for roadside emergencies…Make sure you have enough tread, you can take a quarter, turn it upside down in the tread groove, put it in there, if the top of [George] Washington’s head is exposed, you need new tires,” Armbruster adds.

The minutes spent checking your car may save you from waiting on roadside help.

“We do see an increase in call volume for these types of situations, its important if you do get out, be patient if you get into an emergency. Certainly, cold weather is nothing to take lightly,” he said.

Winter weather can make traveling on Texas roads dangerous, especially if icy conditions are present. To stay informed and safe, be sure to check out the live Texas road conditions map. This map provides real-time updates on road conditions, including any icy patches that may be present.

By regularly checking the Texas road conditions map, you can plan your travel routes accordingly and avoid any hazardous areas. Remember to drive cautiously and be prepared for any unexpected road conditions. Stay safe out there! #TexasRoadConditions #IcyRoads #DriveSafe

VERNON, CT (WFSB) – Residents are preparing for the cleanup of Winter Storm Albatross.

In Tolland County, the snow started falling around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

By 11:00 p.m., there was already a few inches of snow.

Plow drivers are doing the best they can to keep up.

Kyle Geer from Allied Snow is using a new plow.

“It’s very slippery out here,” he said. “It’s accumulating and the visibility is awful.”

Town plows are working extremely hard in Vernon.

Dee Lambert from Manchester explained the importance of driving slow.

“A lot slower. A lot slower… It’s going to be really slick out,” she said.

Jessica Dimmock works at a shelter in Rockville. She was out Sunday night waiting for the bus.

“It’s very windy. It gets in your face. It’s accumulating and the roads are getting bad,” Dimmock stated.

A big refreeze is anticipated with cold temperatures on the way.

  • Marlon Humphrey looks forward to wintry Buffalo conditions

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey earned both an All-Pro selection and his third Pro Bowl berth during the 2024 season. Given his injury-riddled, disappointing 2023, this season has been nothing short of a significant comeback.

Humphrey and the Ravens will visit the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night for the most anticipated game of the divisional playoff weekend. It’s probably one of the most hyped-up divisional playoff games ever.

It’s a matchup between two teams used to playing in cold weather, and Humphrey is excited about potentially playing in the snow. “It gets cold enough in Baltimore, so I don’t think it will be much different.”

The current forecast for kickoff time is an air temperature of 17 degrees, with a 20% chance of precipitation and a humidity of 64%. Also, once that wind whips up in Highmark Stadium, during nighttime, it will feel much colder than 17 to everyone who is in attendance.

If snow falls throughout this game, it will add interest and excitement to what is shaping up to be a classic.

Meanwhile, an Arctic blast will hit most of the United States this weekend and last until about Thursday. Subzero wind chills could be seen as far south as Atlanta and/or Dallas.

Weather alerts are going out as we speak, and we’ll all need to practice common sense to stay safe, as this front will adversely impact most of the population.

Marlon Humphrey, star cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens, is no stranger to tough weather conditions. And as his team prepares to face off against the Buffalo Bills in the upcoming game, Humphrey is looking forward to the wintry conditions that Buffalo is known for.

In a recent interview, Humphrey expressed his excitement for playing in cold, snowy weather. “I love playing in tough conditions, it really brings out the best in me,” he said. “I thrive in those kinds of situations and I can’t wait to see how our team performs in Buffalo.”

Humphrey’s confidence in his abilities to perform in adverse weather conditions is well-founded. Throughout his career, he has proven himself to be a resilient and adaptable player, always rising to the occasion no matter the circumstances.

As the Ravens gear up to face the Bills in what promises to be a challenging game, fans can rest assured that Marlon Humphrey is ready to embrace the wintry conditions and give it his all on the field. With his determination and skill, there’s no doubt that he will be a force to be reckoned with in Buffalo.

  • Treacherous conditions expected as skiers head to high country for MLK weekend

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is warning travelers about icy and snowy road conditions expected Friday night and Saturday morning as skiers head to the high country for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend.

Drivers heading up Interstate 70 should prepare for significant travel difficulties, including the risk of flash freezing.

“It’s going to be a mess,” said Dave Riggs, who stopped to fill up near Genesee before embarking on his journey on westbound I-70.

    SKI-TRAFFIC-ICE-WARNING.00_00_24_00.Still003.jpg

    Denver7 News

Riggs decided to fuel up in anticipation of potential delays.

“Just coming up the hill, it got real slippery. So I pulled over here to fuel up just in case I have to spend the night somewhere,” he added.

Many drivers are taking CDOT’s warnings seriously, with some opting to stay off the roads altogether.

“Not going skiing. Staying home, bundle up, watch some movies, all that good stuff,” said Kim, a driver who also stopped near Genesee.

The winter storm is expected to create challenges not only for travelers but maintenance crews. CDOT’s plows are outfitted with technology that measures road friction to determine the appropriate de-icing and anti-icing products needed to maintain safety on the highways.

Charlie Stubblefield, owner of Mountain Recovery, is anticipating an influx of service calls this weekend.

The towing company typically responds to about 15 incidents per day. Stubblefield expects that number to skyrocket to around 75.

“There’s going to be one minute where the roads are going to be just dry to wet and not frozen over, and the next minute, around that corner wherever you’re going to be, it’s going to be totally frozen,” Stubblefield warned. “You’re going to be out of control. Be prepared. Don’t take anything for granted.”

Stubblefield also emphasized the importance of moving over for anyone on the side of the road, if you do need to travel.

CDOT has reported record ski travel for MLK weekends in the past. Last year nearly 165,000 drivers traveled both east and westbound through the Eisenhower Tunnel.

Travelers can check current road conditions at cotrip.org.

As skiers across the country prepare to hit the slopes for the long MLK weekend, they should be aware of treacherous conditions awaiting them in the high country. With recent snowfall and freezing temperatures, avalanche risk is high and mountain roads may be icy and dangerous.

It’s important for skiers to be prepared and take necessary precautions before heading out for a day on the mountain. This includes checking avalanche forecasts, carrying essential safety gear such as beacons, shovels, and probes, and staying up to date on weather conditions.

Additionally, skiers should be mindful of their surroundings and stay on designated trails to avoid potential hazards. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to backcountry skiing.

As we celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend, let’s also remember to stay safe and responsible while enjoying the great outdoors. Have a fun and safe weekend on the slopes!

    KDKA-TV Morning Forecast (1/17)

    03:11

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The snow from yesterday’s clipper system has ended for the most part early Friday morning. Cloudy skies and a few flurries linger across the region. For the most part, snow totals were around what we anticipated, with most locations in the Pittsburgh metro area receiving 1-3 inches, including the airport which received 1.7 inches. There were a few isolated higher 4-5 inch totals, but these were few and far between. Most reports coming out of the Laurel Highlands range between 4-6 inches and 1-3 inches also fell along the I-80 corridor as well.

Temperatures this morning are not as cold compared to previous days this week, thanks to a west to southwest wind at the surface. Expect highs to reach the lower to mid-30s in the afternoon. Some decrease in cloud coverage is possible later in the day. This brief “warm up” will last into Saturday ahead of a strong Arctic cold front. Moisture moving in ahead of the front will set us up for a light rain/snow mix beginning after sunrise Saturday lasting through the night. More snow is expected generally north of Pittsburgh, while precipitation will tend to mix with more rain south of Pittsburgh. The snow and rain should taper off Saturday evening after sunset, with partially clearing skies overnight. Clouds are expected to increase again on Sunday during the day, as another fast-moving trough aloft in the atmosphere passes by just to the southeast. This system, along with some low-level cold winds coming out of the northwest, will likely produce some light snow in the afternoon on Sunday, with minor accumulations possible in the Laurel Highlands and Ridges.

The coldest air of the season will gradually transfer into our region starting on Sunday. High temperatures will likely occur early in the day on Sunday and Monday before a slow downward trend each day. The peak of the cold looks to be Tuesday into Wednesday, with lows on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings well below zero. Wind chills will likely be in the -10 to -25 degree range across our area during this event. This is much closer to the range that is actually considered dangerous, and frostbite can occur within 30 minutes on exposed skin, so take precautions and cover up well when going outside. The coldest morning will likely be Wednesday as high pressure settles into the region, before warmer winds from the southwest bring an end to the cold spell by the end of next week.

As we head into the weekend, we can expect more mild conditions with a mix of rain and snow chances in the forecast. While temperatures may not be as cold as we’ve seen in recent weeks, there is still a chance for some wintry precipitation to make an appearance.

As we move into next week, however, a blast of Arctic air is expected to move in, bringing with it much colder temperatures and the potential for more widespread snowfall. It’s important to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and be prepared for changing conditions.

In the meantime, enjoy the relatively milder weather this weekend, but be sure to keep an eye on the sky for any precipitation that may be headed our way. Stay safe and stay warm as we head into the winter season!

Snow showers expected to impact road conditions in Pittsburgh through Saturday | First Alert Weather

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – As of 3:30 a.m., snow showers are rolling in but the ‘core’ of the snow that will have an impact on roads is still located from Parkersburg, West Virginia up through Columbus.

The biggest impact of snow on the morning commute will be felt south of Pittsburgh for people living along I-70. These communities may see up to 2″ falling before noon.

Pittsburgh totals will likely be around 1.5″ through noon. Once school is letting out the best chance for snow will shift with snow squalls being heaviest north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. While snow totals will be all over the place depending on who sees the brunt of snow squalls, an additional 2″-3″ of snow will be possible overnight for places like New Castle and Oil City bringing their 24-hour snow totals close to 4″-5″ of snow.

The highest totals will be recorded in westward-facing slopes of the Ridges and Laurel Highlands where 24-hour snow totals should hit 6″-8″.  It should be an outstanding weekend for skiers at the ski resorts.

    Enjoy!

Morning snow showers will have the biggest impact on roads from Pittsburgh to the south especially for places along and just south of I-70.  From afternoon to evening, impacts will switch to places in the north.

Due to the weather, we have issued a First Alert Weather Day for the area through tomorrow morning.

Conditions throughout the day – January 3, 2024

We have a 3rd First Alert Weather Day (the first two occurring today and Saturday) in place for Monday.

Monday is going to be a mess no matter what, but the biggest question I have right now is how far north warm ahead of the front pushes. The GFS model has the push of this warm air far enough that we see several hours of mixed precipitation.

It still shows snow totals being in the winter storm warning range, meaning more than 6″ of snow falling. The EURO model keeps the event as all snow and obviously means some really big totals are being shown there. We will keep you up to date with the latest on what data is showing and what you should expect over the weekend.

Getting back to this weekend, impactful snow comes to an end Saturday morning. Most will see the impactful stuff done before sunrise, but some lake effect snow showers and a squall or two will still be possible up to nearly noon on Saturday morning. Saturday will be windy and cold with high temperatures in the mid-20s.

Sunday won’t be as cold with highs in the upper 20s.

Snow showers are expected to impact road conditions in Pittsburgh through Saturday, according to First Alert Weather. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory, warning of reduced visibility and slippery road conditions.

Drivers are urged to use caution and allow for extra travel time when commuting in the area. Snow plows and salt trucks will be out in full force to help keep roads clear, but it’s always best to drive slowly and safely in winter weather conditions.

Stay tuned to First Alert Weather for the latest updates on the snow showers and any potential road closures or delays. Stay safe out there, Pittsburgh!
