Will it snow during “Frozen Confines” hockey games at Wrigley Field?
The next seven days will feature plenty of Notre Dame vs. Penn State content.
It starts Friday night at Wrigley Field, where the home of MLB’s Chicago Cubs will host back-to-back doubleheaders of Big Ten hockey. The first game Friday pits Ohio State vs. Michigan in men’s hockey (5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT), followed by Notre Dame taking on Penn State (8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. CT). Saturday sees a women’s hockey game between Ohio State and Wisconsin, with the Badgers’ men’s team then facing Michigan State at the same respective times of Friday’s contests.
More:The Chicago connections that make Notre Dame hockey’s game at Wrigley Field special
The “Frozen Confines” series comes three days after the NHL Winter Classic saw the St. Louis Blues defeat the Chicago Blackhawks, 6-2.
With it being an outdoor game, what does the weather forecast look like? Here’s the playing conditions expected for both days of action.
Weather forecast for “Frozen Confines” hockey games
While the Blues and Blackhawks had to deal with rain Tuesday, it’s unlikely the eight teams playing this weekend will have precipitation.
Per The Weather Channel, the high temperature for each day will be 24 degrees and the low 12 degrees. It’s expected to be partly cloudy conditions Friday, while mostly sunny Saturday. That could play a factor for at least the first period of the early games, as the sun won’t set until around 4:30 p.m. CT each day.
Important on Big Ten hockey standings
The only men’s Big Ten hockey team not playing at Wrigley Field this weekend is the conference leader, Minnesota. They enter January with a five-point cushion over Michigan State in the standings, but the Gophers have played two more conference games than the Spartans so far.
Wisconsin is tied for second with Michigan State, but have played four more Big Ten contests than them. This will be a key weekend for the Badgers to stay in the mix for a top seed in the conference tournament.
Ohio State is fourth and Michigan fifth in the conference. That leaves Notre Dame and Penn State in the bottom two spots, meaning points this weekend would help the winning team avoid finishing in last place by season’s end.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming “Frozen Confines” hockey games at Wrigley Field, fans are left wondering – will it snow during these epic outdoor matchups? With the frigid temperatures and unpredictable weather in Chicago during the winter months, the possibility of a snow-covered ice rink is definitely on the table. While the thought of watching players glide across a snow-covered ice surface under the lights at Wrigley Field is certainly a picturesque scene, it also presents some challenges for both the players and fans. Snow can affect the speed and control of the puck, making for a more unpredictable game. Additionally, the safety of the players could be compromised if the snow accumulation becomes too heavy.
However, a light dusting of snow could add to the ambiance of the event and make for a truly memorable experience for all in attendance. The magic of seeing snow fall during a hockey game at Wrigley Field would be a sight to behold and a unique opportunity for fans to witness a one-of-a-kind event.
So, will it snow during the “Frozen Confines” hockey games at Wrigley Field? Only time will tell. But one thing is for certain – no matter the weather, these games are sure to be a thrilling showcase of skill, determination, and the enduring spirit of outdoor hockey.

How to watch Michigan vs. Ohio State – NCAA Men’s Hockey: Frozen Confines | Channel, stream, preview
CHICAGO — Two rivals take their icy hatred outdoors on Friday night, as the Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes get set to do battle at the Frozen Confines of Wrigley Field.
- Watch Michigan on FuboTV (7-day free trial)
Michigan, along with rival Michigan State, kickstarted the outdoor hockey craze in North America in 2001, when they had that classic battle in East Lansing. Since then, the Wolverines are 4-4-1 in outdoor games. Ohio State is 1-4 in its first five outdoor games.
The last time both of these teams played outdoors came against one another at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland in Feb. 2023, with Ohio State coming away with a 4-2 win. The Wolverines beat the Buckeyes at Progressive Field in Jan. 2012.
Each team has been off for the past three weeks. The Wolverines last split with Wisconsin at Yost to close out 2024, with their win on Dec. 14 snapping a three-game losing streak. In fact, Michigan has lost four of its last six contests.
On the other side, the Buckeyes enter 2025 on a four-game winning streak, having swept Penn State and Notre Dame before the holiday break. OSU has won six of its previous eight games, with a pair of losses to Princeton, which is their only slip-up since American Thanksgiving.
This will be the first of four meetings this season between the Wolverines and Buckeyes. Michigan went 3-0-1 against OSU last year.
