Conner Mantz, Clayton Young go for American record in half marathon – Deseret News
A former BYU Cougar will chase history Sunday as he takes on the Houston Half Marathon alongside some of the top distance runners in the country.
Conner Mantz will attempt to break the American record for the half marathon, but he’ll have to beat more than just Ryan Hall’s time of 59:43 from 2007 to do it.
Mantz wil also need to stay in front of 10K specialist Joe Klecker, who has been training with the goal of besting Hall’s record.

Despite the fact that Sunday will be Klecker’s first-ever official half marathon, Mantz credited the Boulder-based runner with motivating him to enter the race.
“Pretty much when I heard that Joe was running it, I was like alright I want to be in this race. If he’s gonna go out and run 59:30, I want to be there to try and beat him so I can be the one that takes the record,” Mantz said during a Friday press conference.
In recognition of their star power and budding rivalry, Citius Mag released a mini-documentary series on Mantz and Klecker this week, which tracks how they prepared for the Houston Half.
“I don’t know how fit I am right now. I don’t know if I’m going to be fit enough to even come close to the American record in the half, but I’m going to go for it either way. If I blow up, it’s fine. What do I have to lose?,” Mantz said in the first of the series’ two episodes.
The Mantz segments include his friend, training partner and fellow BYU Cougar Clayton Young, who also has a shot at the American record Sunday.
Mantz’s personal best time in the half marathon is 1:00:55, while Young’s is 1:01:18, per FloTrack.
While at BYU, Mantz claimed two national cross-country titles in 2020 and 2021, and Young was the 10K champion at the NCAA outdoor championships in 2019.
The pair is now best known for their marathon careers.
They raced together in the Olympic Marathon in August, where Mantz finished 8th in 2:08:12 and Young finished 9th in 2:08:44, as the Deseret News reported at the time.
Although the Houston Half Marathon is typically a fast race and Sunday’s event will feature several runners looking to push the tempo, Mantz noted during Thursday’s press conference that factors like the weather could interfere with efforts to set a new American record.
Texas, like much of the country, has been hit by an arctic blast this weekend. It’s supposed to be in the 30s in Houston on Sunday, per local news station KIAH.
More than 37,000 total runners will compete in the Houston Half Marathon, the article said.
Futsum Zienasellassie, Hilary Bor, Morgan Pearson, Frank Lara and Diego Estrada are the other top American men competing alongside Mantz, Young and Klecker, FloTrack reported.
“With a field like this, you could definitely get some really fast times. … I want to be in that race whether I’m ready or not,” Mantz said Thursday.
On November 1st, Conner Mantz and Clayton Young will be taking on the challenge of going for the American record in the half marathon. These two talented runners will be pushing themselves to the limit as they aim to break the current record of 59:43.Mantz, a standout athlete from BYU, and Young, a seasoned runner from BYU, have been training tirelessly for this moment. Both have impressive resumes in the running world and have proven themselves to be strong competitors.
The race will take place in a yet-to-be-disclosed location, but fans can follow along with live updates on the Deseret News website. This is sure to be an exciting event that you won’t want to miss.
Stay tuned for more updates and show your support for Conner Mantz and Clayton Young as they chase after this incredible record. Let’s cheer them on as they race towards history!

ARIZONA — The Arizona Cardinals have released their final injury report of Week 17’s matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
OUT – Joey Blount, Elijah Jones, Matt Prater
QUESTIONABLE – James Conner, Evan Brown, Baron Browning, Trey Benson
GOOD TO GO – Kelvin Beachum, Michael Palardy, Darius Robinson, Mack Wilson Sr.
The Rams are listing Rob Havenstein as questionable.
As for Arizona:
It’s a big week for the Cardinals despite being knocked out of the postseason picture.
“It seems like a long time ago when we played the Rams Week 2, but (they are a) good football team. Obviously, they’re playing really good ball right now. They protect the ball; they’re playing good defense. I really think that the last couple games, when you look at them, they’re playing really clean so that’s the challenge to our guys,” said head coach Jonathan Gannon.
“We have to be able to match that, play our brand of ball to have a chance to win, so (I’m) excited for the opportunity.”
The Cardinals will make practice squad elevations on Friday and will reveal inactives 90 minutes prior to kickoff on Saturday at SoFi Stadium.
The Arizona Cardinals are facing a tough matchup against the LA Rams this weekend, and they may be without some key players. Running back James Conner is among three Cardinals players listed as questionable for the game.Conner has been dealing with a heel injury that kept him out of practice earlier in the week. While he was able to return to limited practice on Friday, his status for Sunday’s game remains uncertain. If Conner is unable to play, the Cardinals will have to rely on backup running backs Chase Edmonds and Eno Benjamin to carry the load.
In addition to Conner, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and cornerback Byron Murphy are also listed as questionable for the game. Hopkins has been dealing with a hamstring injury, while Murphy has been nursing a foot injury. Both players are key pieces of the Cardinals’ lineup, so their potential absence would be a significant blow.
The Cardinals will need all hands on deck to take on the Rams, who are coming off a big win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If Conner, Hopkins, and Murphy are unable to play, the Cardinals will have their work cut out for them. Stay tuned for updates on their status as game time approaches.

James Conner is expected to play on Saturday night
The Cardinals listed two running backs as questionable to play against the Rams on Saturday night and it looks like at least one of them will be in the lineup.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that James Conner is expected to be in the lineup for Arizona. Conner was listed as questionable to play because of a knee injury he suffered last Sunday. Conner had 166 scrimmage yards before being hurt.
The Cardinals also listed Trey Benson as questionable due to an ankle injury, so they elevated Michael Carter from the practice squad to go with DeeJay Dallas as running back options.
Arizona also elevated safety Andre Chachere from the practice squad. Joey Blount was ruled out with injured ribs.
James Conner, star running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is expected to play in Saturday night’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. Conner has been dealing with a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the past two games, but he has been practicing this week and is on track to make his return to the field.Conner’s presence will be a huge boost for the Steelers, who are currently sitting at the top of the AFC North with a 10-3 record. His ability to run the ball effectively and catch passes out of the backfield adds an extra dimension to Pittsburgh’s offense, and his toughness and leadership are invaluable to the team.
Fans can expect to see Conner out on the field on Saturday night, ready to make an impact and help the Steelers secure another crucial win as they push for a playoff spot. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting game with Conner back in action. #HereWeGo #SteelersNation
