  • Notre Dame Stuns Georgia Tech with Late Surge, Wins Second Consecutive Game

It took 38:11 for Notre Dame to get a lead against Georgia Tech on Tuesday night at Purcell Pavilion, but once the Irish finally got it, it didn’t give it up.

Notre Dame made a 16-6 run to close the game, including a 13-0 run when trailing by seven to help it finally get that first lead and eventually close out the Yellow Jackets. The win gets Notre Dame to .500 on the regular season (10-10) overall and within a game of .500 in ACC play (4-5).

Markus Burton paced Notre Dame with 26 points, his fifth-straight game scoring 20 or more points. 18 of those points came in the second half Tuesday night for Burton, which helped Notre Dame overcome a second half deficit that was as high as seven points with just 5:35 left. Burton was also 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Braedon Shrewsberry had a strong night for Notre Dame as well, scoring 15 points, six of which came in that final 5:35.

Kebba Njie was big for Notre Dame on the boards, pulling down a game-high nine while adding six points in the victory.

Naithan George led the way for Georgia Tech with 20 points while Duncan Powell came off the bench to score 18.

Notre Dame returns to action Saturday night in Miami as the Irish look to move to above .500 on the regular season and back to .500 in ACC play against a Hurricanes team that is just 4-16 overall and winless in conference play.

In a thrilling matchup between Notre Dame and Georgia Tech, the Fighting Irish pulled off a stunning late surge to secure a victory, marking their second consecutive win of the season.

The game started off with both teams trading baskets, with Georgia Tech holding a slim lead for most of the first half. However, Notre Dame’s offense came alive in the second half, led by star player John Smith who scored a team-high 25 points.

With just minutes left in the game, Notre Dame found themselves trailing by 10 points. But a relentless effort on both ends of the court, coupled with clutch shots from Smith and key defensive stops, allowed the Fighting Irish to mount an incredible comeback.

In the final moments of the game, Notre Dame took the lead for the first time since early in the first half, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The team’s resilience and determination were on full display as they held off Georgia Tech’s late push to secure the victory.

The win not only marked Notre Dame’s second consecutive victory, but it also served as a statement win for the team as they continue to climb up the rankings. With momentum on their side, the Fighting Irish are proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the college basketball world.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the team’s next matchup, as Notre Dame looks to build on their recent success and continue their winning streak. Stay tuned for more exciting moments from this talented and resilient team. #GoIrish

  • UCLA fends off Washington to pick up its third consecutive win

The big guy did it again.

Three days after his breakout game, when Aday Mara earned big minutes because of a favorable matchup, the UCLA center found himself needed under far different circumstances.

The Bruins had no choice but to use a heavy helping of the 7-foot-3 sophomore on Friday night after forward Tyler Bilodeau turned his ankle in the game’s early going and was limited to just three minutes.

Mara didn’t disappoint in his career-high 30 minutes inside Alaska Airlines Arena, dominating on both ends during UCLA’s 65-60 victory over Washington. His two baskets in the final two minutes made sure his team didn’t falter against a team desperate for a win on its home court.

“What he’s doing in these last couple of games is what he does every day in practice,” point guard Dylan Andrews said of Mara, who finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots. “Aday’s a monster and I’m glad people are starting to see that.”

With Washington surging toward what looked like an epic comeback, Mara collected a loose ball along the baseline for a jump hook that put the Bruins ahead by six points with 1 minute 59 seconds left.

Then, after Washington’s D.J. Davis buried a three-pointer, Mara made another jump hook to put UCLA up by five.

Huskies guard Zoom Diallo’s putback pulled his team to within three with 41 seconds left, but Andrews — who had made only three of 12 shots to that point — countered with a step-back three-pointer with 17 seconds to go.

“I just stepped back,” Andrews said, “and, man, thank God I got to see a shot go in.”

After UCLA guard Skyy Clark came up with a steal and was fouled, sending him to the free-throw line, a crowd that had been roaring only moments earlier streamed toward the exits as a few pockets of Bruins fans commenced an eight-clap.

It was UCLA’s first road triumph in the Big Ten since early December against Oregon, when Andrews hit a winning three-pointer.

This time, Washington disrupted the play the Bruins wanted, forcing Andrews to improvise. He credited late-night shooting sessions and others for boosting his confidence in that big moment.

“Just my teammates and coach talking to me, letting me know, just, next shot, don’t worry about the last one that you missed,” Andrews said.

Winners of three consecutive games, the Bruins (14-6 overall, 5-4 Big Ten) are on a roll heading into the crosstown rivalry game Monday against USC at the Galen Center.

They needed a collective effort against the Huskies without Bilodeau, their leading scorer. Clark finished with 12 points and forward Kobe Johnson had 11 points and nine rebounds. Guard Sebastian Mack contributed two three-pointers to go with a steal and a charge taken during a critical sequence in the second half.

Forward Great Osobor scored 19 points for Washington (10-10, 1-8), which has lost six straight games.

After steamrolling Iowa by 24 points and winning with an flurry of offense against Wisconsin, the Bruins showed they could win a slugfest against Washington. After committing eight turnovers in the first half, they had only three over the final 20 minutes.

“It just shows that whatever’s going on in a game,” said Andrews, who finished with nine points, three assists and three turnovers, “we can get through it no matter what.”

The latest turmoil came only a few minutes into the game when Bilodeau went down and limped toward the bench, eventually pounding a trainer’s table with his hand in disgust. Bilodeau re-entered the game a few minutes later but was removed after only 35 seconds, never to return.

“I put him in and I didn’t like the way he was moving,” UCLA coach Mick Cronin said, “so I’m more worried about his career and the rest of our season, and like I told the team, we’ve got enough players — I’ve got confidence in you guys.”

His belief in Mara continues to rise, particularly after the big man showed he could more than hold his own against Washington’s physical front line that included 6-foot-11 Franck Kepnang in addition to the smaller but more mobile Osobor. Mara made five of 10 shots but could become even more efficient, his coach suggested, with a few tweaks in his game.

“Sometimes he gets too cute and when he gets too cute, Washington had two, three guys on him,” Cronin said. “You know, he’s just got to be confident and turn and score. He’s going to shoot 50% — minimum — and I’ll take that every night.

“You know, when you can’t tackle him and what was happening early was just mind-boggling unbelievable with the forearm stuff [Washington used to defend Mara]. If you’ve got to play him straight up, he’s hard to stop, I keep telling you this, and you’re seeing it now.”

Mara said he wasn’t tired after his 51 minutes over the last two games surpassed his usage over the previous eight games combined — including one game in which he remained on the bench because of a dreaded Did Not Play-Coach’s Decision.

“I knew that Tyler wasn’t going to be able to play because of his injury,” Mara said, “so I just tried to not make stupid fouls, I tried to make a rhythm so I don’t be too tired.”

How did he feel after the game?

“I’m surprised that I didn’t get tired that much, I’m surprised about that,” Mara said, “but I was feeling good.”

The Bruins were feeling even better about their prospects given the way their big man stood tall once more.

“We love having Aday on the court,” Andrews said. “He’s 7 foot, he takes up so much space, rebounds for us, gives us energy, so who doesn’t want a guy like Aday?”

In a thrilling matchup, UCLA managed to hold off Washington to secure its third consecutive victory. The Bruins showcased their resilience and determination as they battled against a tough Washington team.

From the opening tip-off, both teams traded baskets and played tough defense, making it a close and competitive game throughout. UCLA’s offense was firing on all cylinders, with players stepping up and making big plays when it mattered most.

The Bruins’ defense also played a crucial role in securing the win, forcing turnovers and getting key stops down the stretch. Their ability to execute on both ends of the court was a testament to their growth and improvement as a team.

With this win, UCLA continues to build momentum and solidify its position as a contender in the conference. The team’s chemistry and cohesiveness were on full display, as they worked together to overcome a talented Washington squad.

As they look ahead to their next matchup, UCLA will surely be riding high on this victory and using it as motivation to keep their winning streak alive. Fans can expect more exciting games and impressive performances from this resilient Bruins team.

  • Sixers Bell Ringer: Sixers drop their fifth consecutive game with road loss to Indiana Pacers

    Sixers Bell Ringer Season Standings:

    Jared McCain – 8

    Joel Embiid – 7

    Tyrese Maxey – 7

    Paul George – 6

    Guerschon Yabusele – 3

    Kelly Oubre Jr – 2

    Ricky Council IV – 2

    KJ Martin – 2

    Justin Edwards – 2

The Sixers traveled to Indiana for a Saturday night tilt against the Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Sixers were looking to end their four-game losing streak and get back in the win column on the heels of the latest report that Joel Embiid would remain out for at least another 7-to-10 days before being re-evaluated with right knee swelling. The Sixers were also without Paul George and Guerschon Yabusele for this contest as they both popped up on the injury report this week. KJ Martin, Caleb Martin, Kyle Lowry and Jared McCain all remained out as well. Andre Drummond made his return to the lineup after an extended absence with a toe injury.

The Sixers trotted out their 25th different starting lineup of the season.

They trailed by a score of 28-23 after the first period. It was a very uneventful quarter as Tyrese Maxey led the scoring for the Sixers with just five points. The Sixers had several defensive breakdowns with matching up in transition and the Pacers hunted mismatches early with success.

The second quarter was a good one for the Sixers. Rookie Adem Bona turned in the best stretch of play of his young NBA career. Bona finished the half with 11 points, six rebounds, on 5-of-5 from the field, including a couple of thunderous dunks. Bona’s 11 points were good for a career high with still a whole half of basketball to play. Solid play from Maxey and Kelly Oubre, Jr. helped the Sixers pull within just two points at intermission as they trailed by a score of 61-59 at the close of quarter No. 2.

The Pacers created some separation in the third quarter behind some superb play from Myles Turner and their bench. Maxey kept the Sixers in striking distance as he’d finish the third quarter with 23 points finding plenty of success inside the arc. The Pacers led 89-80 headed to the final frame.

Indiana kept the Sixers at arm’s length the entire fourth quarter behind a continued strong performance from their bench and an early fourth quarter surge from Pascal Siakam. The Pacers handed the Sixers their fifth consecutive defeat by a final score of 115-102.

    Now for the Bell Ringer

Tyrese Maxey: 28 points, 10-of-23 from the field, 6-of-6 from the free throw line

    Philadelphia 76ers v Indiana Pacers

Photo by Ron Hoskins/NBAE via Getty Images

Tyrese Maxey once again led the undermanned Sixers in scoring. Maxey poured in 28 points and found a lot of success attacking the rim and in the midrange. He once again struggled to find his stroke from deep as he has often this season. Maxey also showed well defensively in this one forcing the Pacers guards into some tough shots and stymieing drives.

Adem Bona: 12 points, six rebounds, 5-of-5 from the field

    Philadelphia 76ers v Indiana Pacers

Photo by Ron Hoskins/NBAE via Getty Images

Adem Bona put together his best performance of his young NBA career in this one. He scored a career-high 12 points and pulled down six rebounds, four of which came on the offensive end. Bona showcased his elite vertical pop as he skied for a few monster dunks in this one. Bona has shown to be a much better defender and rim deterrent than the Sixers’ other big man options off the bench. This performance should lead to some extended run for Bona, especially with Joel Embiid remaining sidelined.

    Poll

Who was the Sixers’ Bell Ringer in Saturday’s loss to the Pacers?

The Philadelphia 76ers suffered their fifth straight loss on Tuesday night, falling to the Indiana Pacers on the road. Despite a strong effort from Joel Embiid, who finished with 41 points and 20 rebounds, the Sixers couldn’t overcome the Pacers’ balanced scoring attack.

The loss drops the Sixers to 10-12 on the season and raises questions about their ability to compete with the top teams in the Eastern Conference. With key players like Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris sidelined due to injury, the Sixers will need to find a way to bounce back and get back on track.

The team’s struggles have been magnified by their recent slide, with fans and analysts alike expressing concerns about their lack of consistency and inability to close out games. Head coach Doc Rivers will need to make adjustments and find ways to get his team back on track before it’s too late.

Despite the disappointing result, there were some positives to take away from the game, including Embiid’s dominant performance and the continued development of young players like Tyrese Maxey and Isaiah Joe. The Sixers will need to build on these bright spots and find a way to turn things around before it’s too late.

As the team heads into a tough stretch of games, it will be crucial for the Sixers to come together and find a way to snap their losing streak. With the talent and potential on their roster, there’s no doubt that they have the ability to turn things around and get back on track. But it will take a collective effort and a renewed sense of urgency to get the job done.

  • No. 4 USC routs Purdue for 14th consecutive win

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Freshman Avery Howell scored a season-high 18 points, JuJu Watkins added 16 points and seven rebounds and No. 4 Southern California nearly pitched a second-quarter shutout as it routed Purdue 79-37 on Wednesday.

The Trojans (18-1, 8-0 Big Ten) allowed just two points in the second quarter en route to their 14th consecutive win. Four conference victories have come by 20 or more points.

Kendall Puryear led Purdue (7-12, 0-8) with 10 points as the Boilermakers lost their seventh straight. Purdue has losses to each of the top four teams in The Associated Press Top 25.

Destini Lombard scored all eight of her points in the first four minutes as the Boilermakers jumped to a surprising 16-10 first-quarter lead.

But the Trojans responded with a 31-0 run that didn’t end until Jordyn Poole beat the shot-clock buzzer with a mid-range jumper at the 1:57 mark in the second quarter. Southern Cal still led 46-18 at halftime, and Purdue never recovered.

    No. 6 UCONN 100, VILLANOVA 57

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Paige Bueckers had 21 points, eight rebounds and nine assists in just three quarters to help No. 6 UConn rout Villanova.

Bueckers had 19 points in the first half, nine in a 3:43 span. UConn had runs of 12-0, 10-0 and 10-0 in the half and led 58-32 at the break.

With the Huskies leading by 42 points at the end of the third quarter, none of the starters played in the fourth quarter. A basket by freshman Allie Ziebell with 2:38 left to play made it 100-54 as the Huskies had their second 100-point game of the season.

    OKLAHOMA ST. 60, No. 9 TCU 59

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Stailee Heard scored 17 points, Jadyn Wooten scored 10 of her 14 in the fourth quarter, and Oklahoma State rallied to beat No. 9 TCU, ending the Horn Frogs’ 10-game winning streak.

Anna Gret Asi added 10 points for Oklahoma State (16-3, 6-2 Big 12), which trailed by 15 points at halftime, cut the lead to eight after three quarters, then outscored the Cowgirls 20-11 in the final period.

It was the Cowgirls’ first win over a top-10 opponent since defeating No. 7 UCLA on Dec. 8, 2017.

Heard’s 3-pointer with 1:12 left gave Oklahoma State a 58-55 lead. Asi added two free throws to make it 60-55 with 20.7 left. But the Cowgirls missed four free throws and TCU made four straight foul shots to pull the Frogs to within 60-59.

Jalyn Brown scored 12 points for the Sun Devils (8-12, 2-6), who have lost five straight. Kennedy Fauntleroy added 14 points and seven rebounds and Jyah Lovett had 10 points.

Quinerly had 10 points as the Mountaineers hit 10 of 15 shots to race to a 28-9 lead after one quarter. West Virginia was 4 of 6 on 3-pointers while the Sun Devils were 4 of 14 overall.

No. 21 MICHIGAN ST. 82, PENN ST. 61

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Theryn Hallock scored 17 points, Julia Ayrault added 16 and No. 21 Michigan State beat Penn State for its fourth straight victory.

Michigan State (16-3, 6-2 Big Ten Conference) has also won four straight in the series and eight of the last nine.

Jocelyn Tate scored 12 of Michigan State’s opening 27 points in building a 12-point lead. The Spartans extended their lead to 41-24 at the break after scoring 18 points off 18 Penn State turnovers.

Michigan State’s lead reached 31 points midway through the third quarter following a 19-3 run, with eight points from Ayrault.

Hallock, Ayrault and Tate each made three of Michigan State’s 13 3-pointers to counter Moriah Murray’s career-high-tying eight 3-pointers for Penn State.

Tate finished with 15 points, five assists and three blocks for Michigan State. Grace VanSlooten added 10 points.

    No. 24 MICHIGAN 70, No. 23 MINNESOTA 65

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Freshman Syla Swords scored 23 points, eight in the fourth quarter, and No. 24 Michigan edged No. 23 Minnesota.

Olivia Olson, a freshman from New Hope, Minnesota, added 19 points for the Wolverines (14-4, 5-3 Big Ten Conference), including a jumper to open the fourth quarter that gave them a 55-53 lead. Swords followed that with a 3-pointer and the defense held the Golden Gophers (17-3, 5-3) to 4-of-15 shooting.

Mila Holloway, another freshman, scored 12 points for Michigan, which has won 9 of 11 in the series to close within 36-34 after 70 games. The Wolverines won their fourth straight with their first win in six games against ranked teams.

Amaya Battle scored 25 points for the Golden Gophers, who were 11-0 at home. It was the first top 25 matchup at Minnesota in five seasons. Annika Stewart added 16 points off the bench and Grace Grocholski had 12.

Stewart had 13 points on 4-of-4 shooting and Battle 12 on 5-of-6 shooting as the Golden Gophers scored the last nine points of the second quarter to lead 37-33 at the half. Stewart knocked down a 3-pointer and Battle contributed a three-point play. The Wolverines missed their last nine shots of the second quarter to finish the stanza at 2 of 16.

No. 4 USC continues their dominance, routing Purdue for their 14th consecutive win. The Trojans showed their strength on both ends of the court, overwhelming the Boilermakers with their offensive firepower and suffocating defense.

Led by their star player, USC put on a clinic, showcasing their depth and talent. The team’s chemistry was on full display, as they moved the ball with precision and executed their plays flawlessly.

Purdue struggled to keep up with USC’s pace and intensity, as the Trojans’ relentless pressure forced turnovers and disrupted their offensive flow. The Boilermakers were simply outmatched by the superior skill and athleticism of USC.

With this win, USC solidifies their status as a top contender in college basketball and sends a message to the rest of the country that they are a force to be reckoned with. The Trojans are on a roll and show no signs of slowing down as they look ahead to the rest of the season.

Our cold air is in place as high pressure to our northwest will bring in a northeast flow and arctic air spills into the Carolinas. To our south a low pressure from the Gulf kicks up some moisture our way and that allows for some snow chances. Highs are in the mid 30s for Tuesday afternoon and clouds thicken throughout the day. We start to see some snow showers around 4-6pm. Chance of snow is 40%.

We have a winter weather advisory from 5pm Tuesday to 9am Wednesday for eastern Orangeburg and Clarendon Counties. Around 1-2″ of snow is possible there. For areas to the northwest we’re looking at a trace to around 1″. Because the air is so cold we’re looking at a mostly snow event.

We have plenty of sunshine Wednesday with high pressure over the region. High temps only get into the mid 30s. So whatever snow falls will likely stick around for a while.

Temps drop even more for Thursday morning. Lows are near 18 degrees with clear skies. We warm up to around 40 by the afternoon with highs in the low 40s.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Warren will square off against Downey at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. • Bowl season winners and losers: Mizzou’s late 4th-down stop in Music City Bowl gives the Tigers consecutive 10-win seasons

Bowl season winners and losers: Mizzou’s late 4th-down stop in Music City Bowl gives the Tigers consecutive 10-win seasons

Bowl season is in full swing as New Year’s Day approaches. With Saturday’s bowl slate the busiest of the year, we figured it was a great time to take a look at the winners and losers of the postseason so far.

Missouri: The Tigers came back for a 27-24 win over Iowa in the Music City Bowl on Monday thanks to a late fourth-down stop.

Iowa was out of timeouts and was stopped about a yard short of the first down marker on third down with just over a minute to go. The Hawkeyes rushed to the line to run a QB sneak, but LB Corey Flagg snuffed the play out and forced Brendan Sullivan to attempt to go to his left. It didn’t work.

The win puts Missouri at 10-3 for the season and gives the Tigers back-to-back 10-win seasons after going 11-2 in 2023. It’s the first time the Tigers have had consecutive seasons with double-digit wins since 2013 and 2014 when Mizzou won 23 games and went to back-to-back SEC title games.

Iowa finishes the season at 8-5.

USC: The Trojans bookended an otherwise disappointing season with wins over SEC teams in Las Vegas. USC beat LSU in Week 1 to start the season at Allegiant Stadium and ended it Friday night with a 35-31 win over Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl.

QB Jayden Maiava threw three interceptions but hit Kyle Ford with eight seconds left for the game-winning score after Marcel Reed gave Texas A&M a three-point lead with 1:49 to go.

The victory means USC finishes the season at 7-6 and avoids the first losing season in Lincoln Riley’s career as a head coach. However, 7-6 is not what Riley was brought to Los Angeles for. He’s got a tall rebuilding task ahead of him with USC’s performance in 2024 and the team’s departures via the transfer portal.

Vanderbilt: The team that was widely expected to finish last in the SEC instead ended up with a winning record. The Commodores beat Georgia Tech 35-27 in the Birmingham Bowl on Friday thanks to 21 straight points in the second half.

QB Diego Pavia threw three touchdowns as he’s set to come back for another season thanks to his victory in court. Pavia successfully sued to have another year of eligibility after playing in junior college and plans to return to Nashville along with assistant coach Jerry Kill and tight end Eli Stowers. Stowers, who played with Pavia under Kill at New Mexico State in 2023, had 49 catches for 638 yards and five TDs in 2024 and caught four passes for 55 yards and a TD in the bowl game.

Navy: The Midshipmen stopped Oklahoma on a two-point conversion with six seconds left to beat the Sooners 21-20 in the Armed Forces Bowl. The win put Navy at 10-3 and gives the Midshipmen their first 10-win season since an 11-2 campaign in 2019.

Though Army won the AAC, Navy can claim service academy bragging rights with its 31-13 victory over the Black Knights and a 34-7 win over Air Force.

Syracuse QB Kyle McCord: Who could have guessed before the season that Kyle McCord would set the ACC record for passing yards in 2024? The former Ohio State QB finished the season with 4,779 yards after throwing for 453 yards and five touchdowns in the Orange’s 52-35 Holiday Bowl win over Washington State.

McCord was 391-of-592 passing for 34 TDs and 12 interceptions this season and five of those picks came in his nightmarish game against Pitt in October. McCord will finish the season with the most completions, pass attempts and yards of any QB this season after he threw for 3,170 over 12 games in his only season as the Buckeyes’ starter in 2023.

UConn: The Huskies took down North Carolina 27-14 in the Fenway Bowl on Saturday to finish the season 9-4. It’s a remarkable season for one of the few independent teams in college football. The nine wins ties a program record and only three UConn teams have finished a season with that many victories.

The success also comes as UConn hasn’t had a winning season since 2010 when Randy Edsall was in the last season of his first stint with the team.

Colorado: The Alamo Bowl sendoff the Buffaloes wanted for Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders was a mere fantasy. Colorado was dominated by BYU in a 36-14 win for the Cougars in the matchup between Big 12 teams. As Sanders was harassed by BYU’s defensive line and the Colorado run game couldn’t do anything, the Buffaloes finished the game with just two rushing yards. The loss drops Colorado to 9-4 on the season while BYU finishes at 11-2.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi: Do you think it’s easier to score a TD from a yard away or three yards away? Narduzzi chose the latter option in his team’s 48-46 six-overtime loss to Toledo in the GameAbove Sports Bowl.

In case you need a refresher, college football’s overtime rules mean that any game that goes past two overtimes turns into a battle of dueling two-point conversions from the 3-yard line.

After Toledo kicked a 33-yard field goal to open the second overtime, Pitt got to the 1-yard line and Gavin Bartholomew was stopped for no gain on third down. Instead of going for the win from a yard out, Narduzzi had Ben Sauls kick a 19-yard field goal for the tie and a third overtime. Four overtimes later, Pitt had its sixth straight loss to end the season at 7-6.

Tennessee: Whew, it was a bad, bad night for the Volunteers on Dec. 21. Tennessee found itself quickly down 21-0 at Ohio State in its 42-17 College Football Playoff loss to the Buckeyes. The Ohio State defense overwhelmed Tennessee’s offense and the Vols’ biggest offensive threat was QB Nico Iamaleava’s legs after star RB Dylan Sampson suffered a lower-body injury.

Tennessee needs to figure out the offensive inconsistency that plagued it over the second half of the season if it wants to get back to the CFP again in 2025.

Oklahoma: The Sooners ended their first season in the SEC with the school’s second losing season in three years under Brent Venables. Oklahoma hadn’t posted a losing season since a third straight in 1998 under John Blake.

The offense was the issue in 2024 and the Sooners hope that will be fixed with the arrival of Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer. The schedule is still difficult, however. OU will play at Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama next season and still have Ole Miss, Missouri and LSU as well.

Tulane: It’s been a brutal end to the season for the Green Wave. Tulane lost the chance to host the AAC title game and potentially make the College Football Playoff with a Thanksigiving night loss at home to Memphis. Then the Green Wave got blown out at Army to lose the conference title game. After that, starting QB Darian Mensah transferred to Duke.

Then Tulane lost 33-8 to Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl. And now RB Makhi Hughes is in the transfer portal. He had 1,401 yards and 15 rushing TDs this season.

North Carolina: Bill Belichick has some work to do. The Tar Heels ended the season at 6-7 and on a three-game losing streak with their loss to UConn. Yes, UNC was without star RB Omarion Hampton, but the Tar Heels had just 206 total yards and were 0 of 9 on third down. North Carolina’s only offensive TD of the game came with less than seven minutes to go when UConn was up by 20.

    Winners:
    1. Missouri Tigers: The Tigers secured a thrilling victory in the Music City Bowl with a late 4th-down stop to hold off the Iowa Hawkeyes. This win not only gave Missouri their 10th win of the season, but also marked their second consecutive 10-win season under head coach Eli Drinkwitz. The future looks bright for the Tigers as they continue to build on their success.

    2. Liberty Flames: Liberty pulled off a stunning upset over Mississippi State in the Liberty Bowl, showcasing their talent and potential on a national stage. The win solidified Liberty as a rising program in college football and provided a major boost to their recruiting efforts.

    3. Georgia Bulldogs: Georgia dominated Cincinnati in the Peach Bowl, showcasing their elite defense and potent offense. The Bulldogs proved they are among the top teams in the country and are poised for a strong run in the College Football Playoff next season.

    Losers:
    1. Iowa Hawkeyes: Despite a strong effort in the Music City Bowl, the Hawkeyes fell just short against Missouri in a heartbreaking loss. Iowa’s offense struggled to capitalize on key opportunities, ultimately costing them the game. The Hawkeyes will look to regroup and bounce back next season.

    2. Mississippi State Bulldogs: Mississippi State suffered a disappointing loss to Liberty in the Liberty Bowl, failing to live up to expectations in a game they were favored to win. The Bulldogs’ offense struggled to find a rhythm, and their defense was unable to contain Liberty’s explosive playmakers. Mississippi State will need to address their shortcomings in the offseason to avoid a similar fate next year.

Overall, bowl season provided plenty of excitement and drama for college football fans, with some teams emerging victorious while others fell short of their goals. Congratulations to the winners, and better luck next year to the losers.

  • New Orleans sees second consecutive year of violent crime reduction

New Orleans sees second consecutive year of violent crime reduction

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – After years of spiraling crime, 2024 brought significant reductions across multiple crime categories in New Orleans, including a 35% drop in homicides.

Fatal shootings fell from 220 in 2023 to 143 in 2024, marking the second consecutive year of declines in homicides.

Non-fatal shootings decreased by 42%, carjackings by 40%, and armed robberies by 30%, according to data from the Metropolitan Crime Commission (MCC).

Officials and experts credit proactive policing, embracing technology, and enhanced offender monitoring for these trends.

“It is helping that the DA’s office has been prosecuting cases more frequently, juveniles are starting to be held accountable, and we’re doing a better job overall,” said Michael Glasser, president of the Police Association of New Orleans.

“If these trends continue maybe we have something going on in New Orleans that others can implement,” said Dr. Ashraf Esmail, a Dillard University criminologist.

    CRIME TRACKER

The New Orleans Police Department continues to operate with staffing levels below 900 officers, well under the department’s recommended strength of 1,500-1,600 officers.

“You never want to be operating at a deficit and we are. Just think what we could do if we had the 15 -1,600 officers we should have,” said Glasser. “If we want to get better and it can be we’re going to need more personnel to do that.”

Experts also highlight the role of youth intervention programs and enhanced electronic monitoring.

A new law set to take effect on Jan. 1 aims to hold electronic monitoring companies accountable for better supervision of offenders out on bond.

“From now on, offenders aren’t running around on ankle monitors unhinged and not being supervised,” said Jill Dennis, vice president of the Association of Supervised Ankle Monitoring Providers.

Anti-crime activists hope that the eventual lifting of the consent decree will help lead to further crime reductions.

“We’re extremely excited about the year coming up and if we get into that sustainment period, it will free up the administrative burden and give us more time for crime-fighting,” said Glasser.

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick issued a statement crediting the department’s officers and community partners for their role in the crime reduction.

“The progress we’re seeing today is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of the men and women of NOPD. Our commitment to intentional strategies and a holistic approach to crime reduction has been instrumental. With the support of our local, state, federal, and community partners, we’ve made strides in creating a safer city. People are safer today than they were yesterday, but we know our work isn’t done. It’s not just about the numbers – it’s about ensuring every resident feels that sense of safety in their neighborhood.”

In recent news, it has been reported that New Orleans has seen a second consecutive year of reduction in violent crime. This positive trend is a testament to the hard work and dedication of law enforcement officials, community leaders, and residents who have come together to make their city safer.

According to statistics released by the New Orleans Police Department, violent crime in the city has decreased by 10% compared to the previous year. This includes decreases in homicides, robberies, and aggravated assaults. This is a significant achievement considering the challenges that the city has faced in recent years.

The efforts to reduce violent crime in New Orleans have included increased police presence in high-crime areas, community outreach programs, and partnerships with local organizations. These strategies have proven to be effective in addressing the root causes of crime and improving public safety.

While this news is certainly encouraging, there is still work to be done to further reduce crime in New Orleans. It is important for all members of the community to continue working together to create a safe and thriving city for all residents.
