Modern role-playing games are nearly whimsical in their depictions of magical powers and playable fantasy races, but the origins of the genre are much darker than most folks realize. More often than not, the books and myths that inspired RPG developers like Gary Gygax veered into terrifying territory (just think of all the times that Conan faced down cosmic horrors), with some of these influences needing to be watered down so that the hobby could eventually be accepted in the mainstream.
These days, even adult-oriented RPG-adjacent productions like Prime Video’s Vox Machina series are still mostly playful in tone, but that’s not to say that no creator has ever dared to explore the darker side of their favorite hobby.
We’ve already covered dark fantasy flicks like Solomon Kane and The Beastmaster on previous editions of Horror Adjacent, but today I’d like to discuss something a little more meta. Back in 2009, a young French-Canadian filmmaker decided to turn his interest in extreme role-playing into the basis for a story about how make-believe conflict can have very real consequences, with the ensuing project becoming the criminally underseen indie thriller The Wild Hunt.
Inspired by the Norse sagas that still thrive amongst the Nordic immigrants of Canada, filmmaker Alexandre Franchifelt came up with the idea for his debut feature when he realized that these ancient narratives were often accidentally re-enacted by dedicated Live-Action Role-Players (hobbyists engaging in a gamified form of collective storytelling where players physically play out characters without the need for abstract tools like dice and character sheets). And with Franchifelt’s home-province of Quebec being home to one of the largest LARP communities in the world, it stands to reason that the director would want to take advantage of the existing Tolkienesque backdrop of elves and Vikings roaming the enchanted backwoods of Canada.
In the finished film, we follow the son of Icelandic immigrants Erik Magnusson (Ricky Mabe) as his jealous nature gets the better of him and he crashes a LARP event in order to win back his role-playing girlfriend Lyn (Kaniehtiio Horn). With the help of his mythology-obsessed older brother Bjorn (Mark Antony Krupa), Erik unwittingly incites chaos among the various factions of the game, with the film slowly devolving into a very real tragedy about the dark side of role-playing and the unpredictable power of narrative itself.
SO WHY IS IT WORTH WATCHING?
I’ve had a lifelong fascination with everything related to role-playing games, which is likely why I spent years seeking out all forms of RPG-adjacent media like Dead Gentlemen Production’s The Gamers franchise and even indie documentaries like Monster Camp. However, while there are a handful of similar productions out there, The Wild Hunt stands out by being one of very few “gamer” movies that still stands on its own even if you have no knowledge (or even interest) in the RPG scene.
Despite the feature’s shoestring budget and questionable production value, there’s an undeniable thoughtfulness to the filmmaking here, with Franchifelt effortless transitioning between the intimate conversations of the real world to the Peter-Jackson-inspired extravagance of seeing dozens of costumed fanatics putting on silly accents and threatening each other with foam swords.
In fact, one of the film’s biggest draws is its believable cast of weekend warriors, with recognizable gaming folk like high-and-mighty rules lawyers and even racial minorities that feel slightly out of place turning the experience into a fascinating character study about the kind of person that engages in such a niche hobby. I also appreciate how characters on all sides present hints of toxic masculinity (which is something of a big issue in the gaming scene), with even our protagonist failing to realize that his quest was ultimately rooted in selfishness.
Of course, the delusional weirdo Bjorn is the real star of the show here despite initially coming off as comic-relief, with Krupa giving a deceptively nuanced double performance as both a fearless vessel of Thor (complete with a crummy theater kid accent) as well as a genuinely vulnerable young man desperate to flee from his painful family life.
None of this would matter if there wasn’t an interesting story putting these characters in motion, and that’s where The Wild Hunt’s mythological roots really shine. The age-old premise of a desperate man venturing into the unknown in order to reclaim his beloved from a villainous captor recalls the most memorable Norse Sagas, though the film’s somber final act is almost certainly indebted to Greek tragedies. Hell, Lyn’s in-game kidnapping and the ensuing “war” even feels like an intentionally ironic retelling of Troy.
To be honest, I feel like The Wild Hunt’s lack of a cult following has a lot more to do with its subpar distribution (it’s actually quite difficult to track down a copy of the film internationally) than the film’s overall quality. Sure, the photography stumbles a bit during night scenes and there are some serious pacing issues before we reach the climactic tonal shift of the third act, but the fact remains that this movie deserves more fans.
AND WHAT MAKES IT HORROR ADJACENT?
You might be surprised to hear that a down-to-earth indie flick about nerdy warriors wearing rubber elf ears contains some unsettling genre elements, but The Wild Hunt is actually a much darker movie than its premise might lead you to believe.
We’ve all met (and possibly made fun of) overly competitive gamers who take their hobbies way too seriously, but when you add in isolation and the social pressures of a communal narrative, you may come to realize that groups like this have a lot in common with cults due to their willingness to spur others into violent action for the sake of a “story.” The Wild Hunt may have a central antagonist in the form of the dark shaman Murtagh (Trevor Hayes), but the real “villain” of the film is the idea that real acts of cruelty can be inspired by mere narratives.
Of course, it’s the film’s third act that really cements it as a tense thriller, with characters forgoing foam swords for fists and torches as the violent spirit that inspired the old sagas claims real world victims. And while I won’t go into detail in order to avoid spoiling the experience for newcomers – suffice to say that there’s some brutal imagery on display towards the final moments of the picture.
The morally ambiguous ensemble, low production value and eventual tonal whiplash are clear signs that The Wild Hunt was never meant to be a crowd-pleaser, but I can’t help but keep coming back to this one whenever I see hardcore fans of any niche hobby engaging in questionable behavior online. Part indie drama, part Lord of the Rings fan-film and all Shakespearean tragedy, I’d recommend this flick to anyone who can appreciate the emotional roller-coaster that is fantasy role-playing.
I also think it would also make for a great double-feature with Joe Lynch’s much more light-hearted Knights of Badassdom!
There’s no understating the importance of a balanced media diet, and since bloody and disgusting entertainment isn’t exclusive to the horror genre, we’ve come up with Horror Adjacent – a recurring column where we recommend non-horror movies that horror fans might enjoy.

The actor and TV host revealed his news on Tuesday when he announced he had signed a new deal.
Taking to Instagram, he shared Deadline‘s article explaining his fresh acting gig.
Mark will star in Scream 7 and he’s incredibly excited by the opportunity.
“Honored to be part of this iconic franchise. #Scream7,” he wrote.
His quick witted wife, Kelly Ripa, was one of the first to respond and quipped: “Are you the killer?”
The couple’s oldest son, Michael — who is also an actor — remarked: “Literally the coolest thing,” and added some clapping hand emojis.
Mark agreed and commented back: “Right??”
Mark will star alongside the already announced legacy cast which includes Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown. Other newcomers include Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor and Joel McHale.
The role is far cry from his hosting duties on Live! but it’s by far the first acting gig he’s had.
Mark had a recurring role on political drama The Girls on the Bus, he’s appeared in Only Murders in the Building, and had other TV credits in the likes of How I Met Your Father, Riverdale and The Night Shift.
He and Kelly met while acting on All My Children in 1995.
Sarah Michelle Gellar recently reminisced with the couple on their show about the day they first met on set.
At the time, Sarah had a regular role on the soap and said: “I will never, ever forget the story — this is a true story, you can tell me if I tell it wrong — but I was, I guess I was in the hair and makeup.
“And Kelly comes in. This is the ’90s, so she has those huge Velcro rollers she used to wear in her hair,” she laughed.
“And she comes running in, she’s like, ‘Oh my God!’ I’m like, ‘What happened?’ she’s like, ‘There’s the most beautiful man in the rehearsal hall. I have never… I’m in love!’ And that is you!” she finished, pointing at Mark.
Mark played Kelly’s love interest on the show after the pair met in a 1995 audition and sparks flew instantly.
“She literally saw you, and this girl is never at a loss for words,” the 47-year-old told Mark. “She was at a complete loss for words.”
“Thank God I recovered,” Kelly chuckled.
The couple now have three grown children, Joaquin, Lola and Michael who have all left home to forge forward with studies and their careers.
Mark Consuelos, who has been a co-host on Live! alongside Kelly Ripa for the past two years, recently announced his decision to move away from the show. Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have made his early arrival habits no secret to Live with Kelly and Mark viewers, and now his tendencies have a name.
While Ripa acknowledged on Monday’s episode that she and the Live staff may experience what is called “hurry sickness” as “critters of live TV,” she insisted that this is “by nature of [their] jobs,” and that her husband and co-host has the condition because “it is who he is.”
“If you’re always in a rush, you have something called ‘hurry sickness.’ Hurry sickness is described as an excessive sense of time urgency,” she explained. “It’s not technically a medical condition. Not yet. But if I know the medical community, they’ll come up with a pharmaceutical drug for it soon.”
As Ripa continued detailing the symptoms of the “wellbeing phenomenon,” she teased that it is “detrimental to your health and irritates your wife.”
Consuelos chimed in, “Do you know who wrote that? Someone who doesn’t care about time. If you’re on time, you’re 10 minutes late.”
Ripa claimed that she and Consuelos are never just “10 minutes early,” but rather they are “45 minutes early” or even “an hour early.”
Consuelos interjected, “What’s the exaggeration sickness? Is there an exaggeration sickness?”
Photo: ABC Though Live EP Michael Gelman teased that he would “find an article” for Consuelos on the matter, Ripa wanted back-up, citing the example of Albert Bianchini.
“I just want Albert here because Albert traveled with Mark traveled to Italy and said to me, ‘I will never travel with that man again,’” she recalled. “Because Mark got them to the airport about six and a half hours ahead of schedule. Not exaggerating.”
Consuelos asserted “that’s crazy,” arguing that he “would never” go six and a half hours early.
“I would go about five and a half hours [early],” he quipped.

#Kelly #Ripa #shocking #revelation #hubby #Mark #ConsuelosKelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos mark bittersweet final LIVE holiday show with videos of their three kids
It’s the end of an era for Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, as LIVE with Kelly and Mark aired “Miracle on 67th Street,” the show’s final holiday show in their famed 67th street studio.
Over the past four decades, since its 1983 inception, the famed daytime talk show has been taped in its Upper West Side home, seeing the rise and eventual departure of hosts like the late Regis Philbin, Kathie Lee Gifford, Michael Strahan and Ryan Seacrest.
In the new year, the current iteration of LIVE will move to a “fancy state-of-the-art” new home in SoHo, per Kelly, as she and her husband will soon conclude their second full year of hosting the show together.
For the latest episode, aired on December 23rd, the two hosts started off with a pre-taped Christmas skit, in which they walk through a snowy New York while reminiscing on past memories of LIVE.
Several old videos of their three kids, Michael, Lola and Joaquin, also feature. “It looks like this walk to work is turning into a stroll down memory lane,” Kelly joked with an affected drawl.
As clips of their family played, she remarked: “Look! Some of our past holiday shows together. The kids, they were so tiny!” to which Mark added: “And all the times Santa came to visit, this is incredible!”
Kelly has been hosting LIVE since 2001, when she joined Regis after Kathie Lee’s departure following 12 years in the co-anchor spot. Mark made several appearances on the show during that time, and their kids grew up before the world on the sets of the talk show as well.

Before officially being named co-host in April 2023, the Riverdale star guest hosted the show several times, and their older two children have made several more appearances with their parents, sometimes as celebrity guests, and sometimes as happy helpers for cooking segments.
Eventually, the special cut back to the studio, to an audience dressed in their Christmas sweater finest, and a set that received a full holiday makeover, complete with a roaring virtual fireplace, dozens of bouquets, a snow-covered virtual background, and a plush sofa replacing their usual hosts’ chairs.

Kelly quipped: “This is, allegedly, as you know, our last holiday show from our studio home in this very building on 67th street,” and Mark chimed in: “It’s a miracle! It has been broadcasting from here for more than 40 years.”
Their holiday show welcomed guests Mary J. Blige and Rob Thomas, plus some special video messages from past celebrity guests recalling their favorite holiday memories, including Cher, Jimmy Fallon, former President Bill Clinton, Niecy Nash and even Ryan.

The latter recalled the Christmas onesies being the best part of doing the show, as opposed to Kelly and Mark, who were dressed sharply in a satin blouse with a tie and pencil skirt and a full tailored suit respectively.
“Well, now that you’re here, we have to look more elegant,” the Hope & Faith star joked to her husband, who quipped back: “No more onesies.”
As the holiday season comes to a close, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos bid farewell to their final LIVE holiday show with a mix of joy and sadness. The couple, who have been hosting the annual special for years, shared a heartfelt message with viewers as they wrapped up the festive season. In a touching moment, the couple’s three children – Michael, Lola, and Joaquin – joined them on stage to say goodbye to the show. The kids, who have grown up in the spotlight alongside their famous parents, were all smiles as they shared their favorite holiday memories and thanked fans for their support.
