  • Ukraine war briefing: Moscow claims control of Velyka Novosilka but Ukrainians say fight continues | Ukraine


  • Russia on Sunday claimed its troops had captured Velyka Novosilka, a strategically important town in the Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine. The statement could not be independently verified, and Ukraine’s 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade said its troops had only strategically withdrawn from certain parts of Velyka Novosilka to avoid encirclement. “This does not mean that we have completely left the city, the fighting in Velyka Novosilka continues. All actions are aimed at minimising our own losses and maximum damage to the enemy.” The brigade said the withdrawal would make it topographically difficult for Russians to advance by making the river an obstacle. “The enemy … will have no peace, any movement is cut off by shells and drones.”

  • Russia also claimed it troops had taken control of the settlement of Zelene in Donetsk region. There was no independent confirmation. Zelene lies south of Pokrovsk where Russia has incurred mass casualties in a grinding campaign against Ukrainian defenders. In its latest Russia-Ukraine war assessment, the Institute for the Study of War said: “Russian forces recently advanced near Toretsk, Pokrovsk, Kurakhove, and Velyka Novosilka.”

  • Ukraine’s military said it destroyed 200 Shahed drones in an attack on warehouses in the Oryol region of Russia. “Concrete structures were hit, where thermobaric warheads, which are used to equip drones, were stored. There is information about a strong secondary detonation.”

  • Ukraine on Sunday claimed a further successful drone strike on the Ryazan oil refinery south-east of Moscow. It was the second attack on the same site in less that two weeks. Kyiv said the refinery is one of the four largest in Russia and is used by Moscow’s air force. “Explosions and a fire were recorded in the targeted area,” it said. The Russian regional governor in Ryazan – Pavel Malkov – said Russian air defence had “destroyed” drones over the region and that authorities were assessing the damage. Russian officials routinely falsely claim that all attacking drones were destroyed and any damage was only caused by falling debris.

  • An undersea fibre optic cable between Latvia and Sweden was damaged on Sunday, likely as a result of external influence, Latvia said, prompting Nato to deploy patrol ships to the area and triggering a sabotage investigation by Swedish authorities. Nato was coordinating military ships and aircraft under its recently deployed mission, dubbed Baltic Sentry. The effort follows a string of incidents in which power cables, telecom links and gas pipelines have been damaged in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

  • The rout continues with S&P 500 futures down over 2% now


    Tech shares are the main drag with Nvidia itself down some 11% in pre-market trading. A lot of attention is put on DeepSeek and Adam had the early scoop last week already here: China’s DeepSeek may have just upended the economics of AI

    That’s leading to a broader fallout among chipmakers now as investors pick up on the development since the weekend. S&P 500 futures are now down 2.4% at the lows for the day with Nasdaq futures down 4.2%. It’s a bloodbath out there. Meanwhile, Dow futures are down 0.9% currently.

    The flight to safety is leading 10-year Treasury yields down over 9 bps to 4.524% and USD/JPY down over 1% now to test 154.00 on the break of the 155.00 level earlier. The greenback was the lead gainer in Asia trading but has surrendered a chunk of its gains during European morning trade.

    EUR/USD has turned things around from 1.0460 to 1.0500 now while GBP/USD is up from 1.2430 to 1.2500 on the session. USD/CHF has also dropped from 0.9060 to 0.8995 now as the equities selloff is also lighting a bid in the franc.

    Going back to US stocks, the S&P 500 may have touched a record high last week but looks poised to erase all of the gains then at the open today. On the chart, it will still look like a blip but perhaps this could signal the start of a more meaningful retracement/correction after all the frothiness in 2024.

    New Zealand’s medal streak at the Aspen X Games shows no signs of slowing, with 18-year-old Rocco Jamieson of Wānaka earning a bronze medal in the men’s snowboard big air during his debut appearance.

    The competition was fierce, with unprecedented progression on display. A score in the 90s during playoffs wasn’t enough to secure a spot in the finals, and history was made with the first-ever 2160 rotation (six full spins) landed in competition—followed by two more variations from other riders.

    As the youngest competitor, Jamieson stood out with his unique style. In playoffs, he wowed the judges with a frontside 1800 bloody Dracula grab, scoring an impressive 94.00 and advancing to finals in second place.

    Finals delivered the cutting-edge progression X Games is known for. Hiroto Ogiwara of Japan made history with a 2340 mute grab—six and a half full rotations—earning the top score of the day at 97.33.

    Jamieson landed his frontside 1800 bloody Dracula grab again with a flawless take-off and landing. On his second run, he attempted a 2160 but couldn’t quite stick the landing. Despite this, his earlier performance was enough to secure the bronze medal in a field stacked with the world’s best.

    Ogiwara claimed gold with his groundbreaking run, while fellow Japanese rider and 2024 X Games gold medallist Taiga Hasegawa took silver.

    Before the big air medals were even awarded, Jamieson was back in action, competing in the snowboard knuckle huck event. He finished a commendable fourth, rounding off a remarkable debut and a historic day for New Zealand snowboarding at X Games.

    The excitement continues tomorrow in Aspen, with Kiwi athletes competing in women’s ski slopestyle, men’s ski big air, and men’s ski superpipe.

  • Amen Thompson Continues to Thrive as a Starter for the Rockets


    The Houston Rockets were expected to hit a slight struggle after news broke that starting forward Jabari Smith Jr. would be out for multiple weeks with a broken hand. The 21-year-old was averaging 11.9 points and 6.5 rebounds on 43.5% shooting from the field prior to the injury.

    However, the Rockets have been just fine, if not better since forward Amen Thompson stepped in to fill that starting spot. In his sophomore season, the 21-year-old is averaging 12.9 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists. 1.4 steals, and 1.1 blocks across 40 games.

    As a starter, Thompson has been efficient and consistent, boosting his averages across the board. This season, he’s averaging 16.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.8 blocks in 13 games as a starter. In those 13 games, Houston has gone 10-3.

    The Rockets were expected to have one of the deepest rotations in the NBA this season, however the bench has been cut short when it comes to production. Thompson and fellow forward Tari Eason have been the only consistent pieces off the bench. Cam Whitmore is starting to step up as of late, however he hasn’t been there the whole season. The sophomore was briefly sent to the G League amid early struggles.

    Thompson has been the definition of a Swiss Army knife for Houston, showcasing elite abilities on both sides of the floor. He can score when needed but can also rebound, facilitate, and defend.

    There’s a legitimate argument for Thompson to remain as the starter when Smith returns. The Rockets have found the same success with Thompson in the starting lineup, and he’s been producing at a higher level. Based on his seamless fit in the first five, head coach Ime Udoka will have a tough decision to make soon.

    Make no mistake, Houston needs Smith nearly as much as it needs Thompson. He’s been a crucial piece in the Rockets’ success and should continue to be once he returns. However, Thompson’s impact and production cannot be ignored. He’s stepped up for Houston and should be the starting forward next to Dillon Brooks, even when Smith comes back.

    The Spanish midfielder became the first defensive-minded central player to win the award since Germany’s Lothar Matthaus in 1990, as a justified reward for the exceptional contributions to both club and country over 2024.

    Winning a fourth consecutive Premier League title with Manchester City off the back of a Player of the Tournament role at the FIFA Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia, Rodri travelled with Spain to Germany for the 2024 European Championships.

    While Luis de la Fuente’s squad were not tipped as tournament favourites, their controlled way of playing defeated opposition from the likes of Italy, Germany, and France en route to the final in Berlin were they secured the trophy over Gareth Southgate’s England.

    But while Rodri also won Player of the Tournament at the European Championships too alongside the competition triumph with his teammates and goal contributions in Germany, some were left strangely confused by his victory at the Ballon d’Or ceremony last Autumn.

    Speaking after Real Madrid’s latest victory in European competition and after a starring performance from Vinicius Jr, the Brazilian winger himself appeared to remain affected by Rodri’s triumph over him in the chase for the Ballon d’Or.

    “Individual awards are of course important, but… We can’t talk so much, it’s not the vote that people expected, but we have to continue,” Vinicius Jr told TNT Sports Brazil, as translated and relayed by Football Espana.

    He continued, “Rodrygo, Kylian (Mbappe), Jude (Bellingham), to do great things.”

    Vinicius Jr and the entire Real Madrid delegation opted to boycott the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris last year after they became aware of Rodri’s victory in the lead-up to the award being handed out in the French capital.

    Those within the Santiago Bernabeu camp felt it was a certain success for their winger, despite his failure to contribute to anything of note for the Brazilian national team, unlike Rodri for his country over the course of last summer.



    In a recent interview, Vinicius Jr opened up about his feelings towards Rodri’s historic Ballon d’Or triumph, admitting that he continues to be triggered by it. The young Brazilian winger has been vocal about his disappointment in not winning the prestigious award himself, and it seems that the sting of defeat still lingers.

  • Dean Wade continues to show his defensive versatility: ‘Dean does it all’


    Kevin Durant has been one of the most unguardable players in the league for the past 17 years. There’s very little you can actually do to bother a near 7-footer with his shot. Cleveland Cavaliers forward Dean Wade didn’t stop Durant on Monday, but he made it difficult enough to allow the Cavs to come away with a blowout victory over the Phoenix Suns.

    “KD is KD,” said Donovan Mitchell afterward, “I think he shot 9 of 17. But, like, it was tough. You know, it wasn’t [easy].”

    The play below is a good example of how Wade effectively defended Durant. The goal isn’t to try and contest Durant’s shots, it’s to force him out of them by moving him away from his spots.

    On this play, Wade stays in front of Durant’s chest and uses his strength to prevent Durant from turning around and rising up for a jumper. Jarrett Allen’s rotation over to cut off the baseline helped. Durant is then forced to pass out of it which Jaylon Tyson intercepts.

    Wade’s versatility on the defensive end has been impactful all season. He’s part of why Giannis Antetokounmpo called Cleveland a “harder” matchup than the Oklahoma City Thunder. This has shown through in the numbers as Cleveland is 2.2 points per 100 possessions better defensively with Wade on the court compared to when he’s off.

    “We can just throw him on anyone,” said head coach Kenny Atkinson. “Anthony Edwards one night. Kevin Durant the next night. … When you have a guy that can do that or multiple guys [it’s impactful]. I’ve been on a lot of teams where you’re like, ‘Oh man, we kind of need a subpar defender to guard KD.’ And that’s huge that we can solve those matchups.”

    Atkinson brought up the job that Wade did on Edwards. The play below is another good example of the defensive versatility Wade provides.

    Edwards was able to get a running start as his defender after Caris LeVert gets caught on an off-ball screen and then again on the dribble hand-off with Julius Randle. Wade, from a standstill, cuts off Edward’s path to the paint and instead forces him into a step-back midrange shot that he was able to put a good contest on.

    These are the type of things that Wade has continually provided for this team.

    The Cavs have been winning with depth. That was displayed again on Monday afternoon as Atkinson still chose to go with a 10-man rotation despite being down three rotation players. Each player in the rotation deserves credit for that.

    Wade’s ability to guard the opponent’s best player and provide minutes as the backup center is a big part of what has allowed that depth to succeed. The fact that he can fill so many holes defensively while providing good spacing offensively allows the other role players to be as impactful as they’ve been. They will continue to need that production with Evan Mobley out of the lineup.

    “Man, Dean does it all,” Mitchell said. “He’s quiet. He doesn’t talk about himself much. But, he can guard whoever.”

  • Brian Schottenheimer? Kellen Moore? As Cowboys coaching search continues, here are the biggest questions


    Ten days have elapsed since the Dallas Cowboys announced they were moving on from head coach Mike McCarthy.

    The franchise has yet to name a successor.

    Dallas has interviewed four candidates, engaging in informal conversations with at least two more. One candidate, 2023-24 Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, appears to be furthest along the road to a job offer. But where do all the moving parts stand? Let’s break it down, with some of the biggest questions you might be asking.

    The Cowboys have formally interviewed Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, former Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier and Schottenheimer. Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has also engaged in informal conversations with multiple NFL-adjacent names.

    Jones called University of Colorado head coach Deion Sanders the same day he parted ways with Mike McCarthy, though that seems more like a brilliant public relations stunt to shift the conversation from his belated firing than it does a formal courtship. Jones never formally interviewed Sanders, whom he has been close with since Sanders’ time playing for the Dallas Cowboys. Thursday, Jones also engaged in a conversation with former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. The team did not announce it formally interviewed Carroll, as it had the four candidates above. But at the very least, Carroll’s conversation opened the door for more questions about the Cowboys’ proximity to the end of this road.

    Yes, and yes? Sorry for the cop-out, but both are true. The NFL season ended 2 1/2 weeks ago and the Cowboys remain coachless. This has proven costly in their pursuit of a head coach as well as in retaining some top assistants.

    On the head coaching level, three teams beat the Cowboys to the punch: The New England Patriots hired Mike Vrabel before Dallas even parted ways with McCarthy; the Chicago Bears hired Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Tuesday; and the New York Jets hired Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn on Wednesday. Johnson and Glenn each interviewed virtually with their future employers during their wild-card bye week, when the Cowboys were still in conversation with McCarthy. So the Cowboys “fell behind” if they wanted to recruit any of those three top candidates.

    They’ve lost multiple members of their coaching staff to other jobs, including special teams coordinator John Fassel to the Tennessee Titans.

    But on a more macro level, Dallas joins the New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders as teams still interviewing candidates. Dallas was the latest one to this game and won’t necessarily be the last to exit. The Saints fired former head coach Dennis Allen on Nov. 4 and have yet to fill their role, though McCarthy could be a top candidate.

    The league office has urged teams to slow down the hiring processes, both to decrease the number of quick firings and associated costly buyouts, as well as to increase playoff coaches’ ability to focus on their postseason game-planning. Drawn-out searches could increasingly become the norm.

    Schottenheimer did not formally interview with Jerry and Stephen Jones until after Frazier, Saleh and Moore’s rounds. The Jones family’s interest in exploring further hints at a desire to find something other than what they’d already heard. Schottenheimer is the only candidate whose conversation continued to a second day, though a source said whether that formally constituted a second interview or extended the first is semantics for a candidate already in town.

    Moore is not available for further (or in-person) conversation right now as his Eagles prepare to host the Washington Commanders in the NFC championship game.

    What does Schottenheimer offer? The son of longtime head coach Marty Schottenheimer, Brian spent 14 years as offensive coordinator for the Jets, then-St. Louis Rams, Seahawks and Cowboys. He has coached in the NFL for 25 of the past 28 seasons. He joined the Cowboys in 2022 as a defensive consultant helping then-coordinator Dan Quinn anticipate opposing defenses’ trends. He was promoted to offensive coordinator before the 2023 season, though McCarthy called plays in the two years that followed.

    With McCarthy, Schottenheimer helped install a version of the West Coast offense that the Cowboys deemed the “Texas Coast” offense. Precision replaced creativity, with receiver route depths now tied to quarterback footwork with less room for improvisation. Protection schemes shifted, too.

    Results varied. The Cowboys led the league in scoring in 2023, ranking fifth in total offense. Prescott finished second in MVP voting to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. The following year with the same staff and similar personnel, Dallas’ offense fell to 17th, scoring to 21st.

    Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring injury in November but the problems — with protection, establishing a run game and generating consistent passing — predated his injury. A year after throwing a league-best 36 touchdowns to just nine interceptions, he passed for 11 TDs to eight interceptions in eight games.

    Schottenheimer did coordinate top-10 offenses each of his past three seasons as a play-caller in Seattle from 2018-20. His pulse of the Cowboys’ interpersonal dynamics, understanding of Prescott’s strengths and, quite frankly, availability seem to be catching the Jones family’s attention.

    Carroll appears to be making a push for it. But Moore seems to check more boxes even if he wouldn’t return with the Super Bowl (yet?) and NCAA championship lore that Carroll would.

    His Cowboys’ familiarity runs deep: Moore was Prescott’s backup quarterback, quarterbacks coach and then offensive coordinator from 2016-22. Moore has called plays in the NFL each of the past six years, leading the Cowboys to top-six offenses three of his four years and top-11 in scoring during those campaigns. The Cowboys ranked first overall in both marks in 2021 under Moore.

    In Philadelphia this season, Moore coordinated the seventh-best offense and eighth-best scoring attack. Quarterback Jalen Hurts’ passing game has been inconsistent, but Moore has responded by tipping his play calls toward a run game anchored by Saquon Barkley and one of the league’s best offensive lines.

    Moore is less extroverted than Schottenheimer but more widely regarded as a play-caller who is adapting to league trends with his creative uses of tempo and personnel-specific game plans to stress opposing play-callers. An AFC GM and an AFC executive from two teams who interviewed Moore in recent cycles each told Yahoo Sports they would not be concerned about his ability to command a room. The executive cited Moore’s emotional intelligence as strong enough to motivate the team; the general manager said leadership comes in multiple forms, and multiple cerebral offensive coaches in the league have succeeded. Often, those coaches hire a fiery defensive coordinator to balance out the energy.

    Seventeen-year Cowboys tight end Jason Witten hasn’t yet coached beyond the high school level. But he piqued Jones’ interest enough to warrant buzz around Witten’s candidacy as a head coach, much less a member of the next coaching staff. Jones has strong-armed candidates onto Cowboys staffs before, including Moore sticking around as McCarthy’s offensive coordinator in 2020. Witten’s move isn’t a done deal, but think of it like Jones views him as a valve to pull if it makes sense — perhaps because the head coaching pick isn’t as dynamic a presence as the Cowboys seek.

    While Sanders is unlikely to meaningfully resurface for several reasons, including the cost of his Colorado buyout, don’t be surprised if Jones spends time with him at next week’s East West Shrine Bowl. Sanders’ son, Shedeur, will compete at quarterback in a series of practices taking place at the Cowboys’ facility. Be prepared for Deion Sanders and Jones to converse … and generate speculation, warranted or not.

    The top two candidates are coordinators intimately familiar with Prescott. That shouldn’t be a surprise. The Cowboys’ biggest salary-cap investment, by far, is the record-setting extension they awarded Prescott in September hours before their season opener. Prescott is set to earn $240 million over four years, or $60 million per year. Any coaching candidate without a vision for his success should not seriously be considered.

    That vision could differ; multiple successful NFC teams, from the San Francisco 49ers to the Eagles, have recently maximized their quarterback with strong run games and offensive line play rather than an insistence on a highly paid player throwing the ball across the board.

    The 49ers represented the NFC in the Super Bowl last year. The Eagles enjoyed the honor the year before. And with the Cowboys’ NFC East rivals facing off in the conference championship, the franchise’s 30-year NFC title game drought — much less Super Bowl victory drought — stings even more.

    With the Commanders snapping their 34-year streak since advancing past the divisional round, every NFC team but the Cowboys have qualified for the conference title game since the 2010 season.

    The Cowboys’ last season in that position: 1995.

    They hope their next coach will change that.





    The Dallas Cowboys are still in the midst of their coaching search, and two names that have been circulating as potential candidates are Brian Schottenheimer and Kellen Moore. Both have experience in the NFL and could bring a fresh perspective to the team. But as the search continues, there are a few key questions that need to be answered.

    1. Can Schottenheimer or Moore handle the pressure of coaching a high-profile team like the Cowboys? Both have experience in the league, but coaching America’s Team comes with a unique set of challenges and expectations.

    2. How will they handle the dynamic between owner Jerry Jones and star quarterback Dak Prescott? Jones is known for his hands-on approach, and the relationship between the owner and the QB will be crucial for the team’s success.

    3. What changes would they bring to the team’s offensive strategy? Schottenheimer and Moore both have offensive backgrounds, but their philosophies may differ. Will they be able to implement their vision effectively with the current roster?

    4. How will they handle the team’s defense, which has been a weak spot in recent years? The Cowboys have struggled on defense, and the new head coach will need to address this issue to have a successful season.

    As the coaching search continues, these questions will be important to consider when evaluating potential candidates like Schottenheimer and Moore. Only time will tell who will ultimately lead the Cowboys to success in the upcoming seasons.

    Brat summer is giving way to celluloid winter. Maybe it’s because she already conquered the music scene or because her Letterboxd was exposed and she decided to lean in; either way, Charli xcx is fully committing to her Hollywood career. Variety reports that the pop star has added yet another film to her roster, this time based on her own original idea. 

    The film is called The Moment and will serve as the feature directorial debut for Scottish photographer and filmmaker Aidan Zamiri. Zamiri also wrote the screenplay, along with Bertie Brandes. Producer and longtime Charli collaborator A.G. Cook will compose the score. A24 is currently on board to produce, along with Charli under her brand new production company Studio365. (Get it? Like the song.) Not much else is known about the film as of this writing, but Variety says its sources “indicate” that she may also star.

    She’s certainly getting a lot of practice now. The pop star made headlines when she was cast in Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex (starring Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman), but she didn’t stop there. Charli’s other ongoing acting projects include Daniel Goldhaber’s Faces of Death remake, Romain Gavras’ Sacrifice, Pete Ohs’ Erupcja, Julia Jackman’s 100 Nights of Hero (with Nicholas Galitzine, Emma Corin, and Maika Monroe), Benito Skinner’s comedy series Overcompensating, and Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist (led by Jenna Ortega, Natalie Portman and Catherine Zeta-Jones). At least she’s not throwing herself into the fire right away, as she also did double duty on SNL in November. “I hate it when musicians dive into a different field, head-first, without really researching or learning much of anything about it,” the artist told Variety in December. “So I did a lot of reading to educate myself over the past three or four years before I actually did anything.”

    Her collaborators have also spoken highly of her talent in this new chapter. “Charli is an excellent actress,” Erupcja director Ohs said. “She understands what it’s like to have a camera pointed at her… she could deliver all the goods. She’s a legit actress.”

    From the opening whistle, UCLA controlled the game. The Bruins jumped out to a 17-4 lead in the first five minutes, thanks to relentless defensive pressure that resulted in four defensive “kills” — sequences of three consecutive stops.

    Junior guard Kiki Rice led the offensive charge in the first quarter with seven points, while junior guard Gabriela Jaquez was perfect from the field, scoring 6 points and grabbing four rebounds. By the end of the opening frame, UCLA had firmly established its rhythm.

  • Mother of missing Marine veteran calls Trump admin a ‘breath of fresh air’ as she continues 12-year search


    Debra Tice has spent more than 12 years searching for her son, Austin Tice, a Marine veteran and journalist who was kidnapped in Syria in August 2012. 

    Through four presidential administrations, she has not lost hope that her son will come home alive. In fact, she calls the new Trump administration a “breath of fresh air.”

    “They are thinking about what they need to do, making suggestions, standing ready, having ideas. The burden isn’t on me the way it has been in the past,” Tice told Fox News Digital, referring to the Trump administration.

    The Marine veteran’s mother’s first trip back to Damascus, Syria, in over 10 years comes on the heels of a revolution within the war-torn country. Debra Tice has been in Syria for only a few days, but she has already managed to meet with the country’s de facto leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the group that overthrew Bashar al-Assad.

    “It was really quite a surprise that we were able to get a meeting with al-Sharaa. It was a very good meeting,” Tice said.

    Hostage Aid Worldwide, a non-profit organization coordinating Tice’s visit to Syria, was able to take her inside some of the prisons that have been abandoned since the fall of Assad. She said that seeing the conditions in these prisons was “really challenging,” but that she appreciated getting a sense of “what Austin was up against.”

    Tice also issued a challenge to those in the U.S. government who “feel like Austin can wait” to go see the prisons for themselves.

    “I think if they had to come over here – and I wouldn’t even ask them to spend the night in one of those prisons – but I think if they had gone to see what he may have gone through, maybe they would’ve been more motivated to get Austin out of there.”

    During a press conference on Monday, Tice offered praise for the incoming Trump administration and confirmed that they have “already reached out” regarding Austin’s case.

    “I haven’t experienced that in the past four years, but I am optimistic about their help and involvement. I believe they will act quickly,” Tice said.

    Tice also used the press conference to send an emotional message to her missing son. “Austin, if you can hear this somehow, I love you. I know you won’t give up, and I won’t give up either,” Tice said.

    Tice added she has “never had any doubt about the fact that Austin is going to walk free. It’s a matter of time, and in my faith it’s God’s timing.”

    When speaking about her hope and optimism about finding her son, Tice credited her faith as “100 percent.” She added that, “if I didn’t have my faith, I just think I would crumble into a bunch of really small pieces.”

    A State Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital that “intensive efforts are still underway to find Austin Tice.” Additionally, the spokesperson said that the department is “working to get U.S. officials into Damascus” to aid in the search but is waiting for confirmation that the”conditions are safe and local authorities can accommodate the visit.”

    “We have used relevant information, as well as declassified intelligence, to inform the search efforts of Syrian and international partners on the ground in Damascus who are searching for Austin every day,” the spokesperson added.

    “They have visited and searched numerous now-uncovered secret prisons, but to date they have not found Austin or any additional information that would help us locate him.”

    Last month, after receiving a letter from Debra Tice, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to ask Assad for help finding Austin. However, as of now, there are no signs that this has happened.
