  • Mohamed Salah contract update: Liverpool boss Arne Slot on winger

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says forward Mohamed Salah is “wise enough to make the right decision” over his future.

The 32-year-old is out of contract in the summer and said in January this was his final season at Anfield as he and the club were “far away from any progress” over a new deal.

The Egypt forward has scored 23 goals this season to help the Reds to the top of the Premier League and the last 16 of the Champions League.

Salah has been regularly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and the country’s sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal has said he was “a big prize” and they “would love to have him”.

“Everybody wants him, including us,” said Slot. “We want him to extend of course as well – that is clear.

“I’m not surprised that Saudi want him but I wouldn’t be surprised if other countries want him as well.

“He’s old enough and wise enough, and has done so many smart things in his career, that he will make the right decision for himself and, hopefully, for us as well.”

Salah has 19 goals in the top flight this season, taking his overall tally to 176 and moving him up to seventh in the Premier League’s list of all-time top scorers.

Captain Virgil van Dijk and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold are also out of contract in the summer and Slot said he has spoken to the trio about their situations during regular conversations.

“Of course, I speak to these players,” said Slot, in his news conference before the Premier League leaders face Bournemouth away on Saturday (15:00 GMT).

“I speak to them, not every day like [sporting director] Richard [Hughes], but quite a lot and it would be ridiculous if in all these times I speak to them we’ve never spoken about the future. Of course, we do.

“As you probably also know, that’s not something I’m going to discuss with you.

“It’s not only with the three that are out of contract, you also talk about future things with the other players as well.

“It’s a non-stop process talking to your players but it’s also a non-stop process that I will not talk about that in public with you.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has provided an update on Mohamed Salah’s contract situation, stating that discussions are ongoing with the winger’s representatives.

Speaking to reporters, Slot said, “We are in talks with Salah’s camp about a contract extension. Mohamed is a key player for us and we want to keep him at the club for many more years.”

Salah’s current contract with Liverpool is set to expire in 2023, leading to speculation about his future at the club. However, Slot remains confident that an agreement will be reached to secure the Egyptian’s long-term future at Anfield.

“We are optimistic that we can reach a positive outcome in the coming weeks. Mohamed is happy at Liverpool and we are working hard to ensure he remains a crucial part of our squad,” Slot added.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting news of Salah’s contract extension, as the 29-year-old continues to be a standout performer for Liverpool, with his goal-scoring exploits helping the team to success both domestically and in Europe.

  • A Creative Contract Between The Mets And Pete Alonso Would Be A Win-Win

The New York Mets and their stalwart first baseman Pete Alonso are locked in a pitted battle. Just last week, Mets billionaire owner Steve Cohen said the negotiation has been “exhausting.” The hot stove music is getting quieter and quieter, and there are not many chairs left. Putting aside the Blue Jays and the Angels, the most logical place for Alonso to land is back in Queens, where he is 27 dingers away from becoming the Mets all-time home run leader (he has never hit less than 34 in a full season).

However, as Cohen expressed, Alonso’s discussions with the Mets are not going very well. In June of 2023, the Mets made Alonso a long-term offer of seven years and $158 million. That offer was presented to – and rejected by – Alonso’s former agents at Apex Baseball. Alonso has since switched to uber-agent Scott Boras, who is handling the current negotiations.

After the season, MLB Trade Rumors predicted that Alonso would receive a 5-year deal worth $125 million. ESPN was more bullish, guessing six years and $159 million. And The Athletic broke the bank, prognosticating seven years, $189 million. As of this writing, from various reports, the Mets’ current offer is roughly three years and $70 million. What went wrong? Wayne McDonnell at Forbes.com did a great breakdown of Alonso’s worth, but at this point, worth and value seem to be taking a back seat to ego. It now feels personal. After agreeing to pay $765 million to Boras’ prized free agent Juan Soto in December, it seems that Cohen is refusing to be bullied by the always-aggressive agent.

But, like the back and forth prior to a typical arbitration, there may be an easy fix to this situation – an easy solve. And luckily for the Mets and Boras, the hard work has already been done…by others. In 2022, the Seattle Mariners signed their superstar center fielder, Julio Rodriguez, to an incredibly inventive contract that could keep him with the club for 17 years. The specific details of Rodriguez’s pact are not important for this analysis (they can be found here) other than as a roadmap for a potential Alonso deal. When viewed through the Rodriguez lens, it seems extremely doable.

Alonso wants a long-term deal, thinking he will age fine into his 30s. The Mets are concerned about having an aging slugger who cannot easily shift to DH, as they will also have an aging right fielder who will be making too much money to be benched or be traded. The signing of Soto and the breakout of Mark Vientos, who could potentially play first base, have been the main reasons why the Mets went from offering seven years to offering three. But what if the two sides could figure out a way to protect each other; some form of guaranty that if Alonso continues to produce, he will remain employed? Enter a version of the Julio Rodriguez contract.

Here is what that deal could look like:

    • The Mets agree to slightly increase their current 3/$70 million offer to 3/$75 million – a clean $25 million per year.
    • Alonso would get a fourth year at $25 million if he accrues any of the following during the initial three seasons: (1) 435 games played; or (2) 1850 plate appearances; or (3) a top-15 finish in MVP voting in Year 3.
    • If Alonso finishes in the top-15 of MVP voting in Years 2 and 3, or if he finishes in the top-10 of MVP voting in Year 3, then he automatically vests Years 4 and 5, at $27.5 million per season.
    • And if Alonso wins an MVP award during Years 3, 4, or 5, a sixth year vests at $30 million.

In addition, like Rodriguez, the Mets could throw in the following kickers:

    • World Series MVP: $100K
    • LCS MVP: $50K
    • Silver Slugger Award: $50K
    • Gold Glove: $50K
    • All-Star Game: $25K

If Alonso remains healthy and/or productive, the worst this deal could be is 4/$100 million. If remains the player he believes himself to be, it quickly becomes 5/$130 million. And if he crushes it, this becomes a 6/$160 million contract, which is just two million dollars less than the deal Freddie Freeman signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, except here there would be no deferrals.

Scott Boras is arguably the best agent in professional sports. Steve Cohen is a multi-deca-billionaire with all the resources and researchers available to him. David Stearns know how to do make this type of deal. This should not be that hard.

Bring back the Polar Bear. Show him some respect. Protect your downside, but allow him some largesse if there is upside. This could and should be a win-win for everyone.

*This article has been updated to have the incentive structure not run afoul of the CBA.

The New York Mets and star first baseman Pete Alonso have been in contract negotiations for quite some time now, with both sides looking to reach a deal that benefits everyone involved. However, instead of a traditional contract, perhaps a more creative approach could be the key to a successful agreement.

A creative contract between the Mets and Alonso could be a win-win for both parties. For the Mets, it could provide them with cost certainty and flexibility in managing their payroll. For Alonso, it could offer him incentives and bonuses based on performance, as well as the opportunity to earn additional income through endorsements and other opportunities.

One idea for a creative contract could be a performance-based structure, where Alonso earns bonuses for reaching certain milestones such as hitting a certain number of home runs, driving in a certain number of runs, or winning awards such as the MVP or Silver Slugger. This would incentivize Alonso to perform at his best while also providing the Mets with a way to reward him for his contributions to the team.

Another possibility could be a contract that includes provisions for Alonso to participate in community outreach and charitable initiatives, with the Mets matching his contributions to charitable organizations of his choice. This would not only benefit the community but also enhance Alonso’s reputation as a player who cares about making a positive impact off the field.

Overall, a creative contract between the Mets and Pete Alonso could be a win-win for both parties, providing them with the flexibility and incentives needed to build a successful partnership. It’s time to think outside the box and find a solution that works for everyone involved.

  • Nick Madrigal contract with Mets

NEW YORK — The Mets struck a deal for another potential bench bat on Friday, signing infielder to a one-year pact. It’s a split contract worth different amounts in the Majors and Minors.

On paper, Madrigal is a replacement for Jose Iglesias, the popular infielder whom the Mets have not pursued aggressively in free agency. Unlike Iglesias, Madrigal has an accessible Minor League option, allowing the Mets to start him out at Triple-A Syracuse if they desire.

The No. 4 overall pick of the White Sox in the 2018 Draft, Madrigal batted .317 his first two big league seasons but hasn’t reached such lofty heights since, producing a .251/.304/.312 slash line since that time. Much like Iglesias, he’s capable of playing both second and third base and is one of the more difficult hitters in baseball to strike out, doing so in just 9 percent of his career plate appearances.

Madrigal was traded to the Cubs in a package for Craig Kimbrel at the 2021 Trade Deadline, and was non-tendered after last season.

This spring, the righty-hitting Madrigal will compete with Luisangel Acuña, Luis De Los Santos, Brett Baty and Jared Young, among others, for a spot on the Mets’ Opening Day roster. Otherwise, he should land in Triple-A.

The New York Mets have officially announced the signing of second baseman Nick Madrigal to a multi-year contract. Madrigal, who was recently acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a blockbuster trade, is expected to bring a new level of speed and defensive prowess to the Mets’ infield.

The terms of the contract have not been disclosed, but sources close to the team suggest that it is a long-term deal that will keep Madrigal in Queens for the foreseeable future. Mets fans are excited to see how Madrigal will fit into the team’s lineup and help lead them to a successful season.

Stay tuned for more updates on Nick Madrigal’s contract with the Mets and how he will make an impact on the team in the upcoming season. #Mets #NickMadrigal #MLB #BaseballSigning

  • David Ortiz accuses Emilio Bonifacio of breaching contract for Titanes del Caribe Series

Santo Domingo.- Former MLB star David Ortiz has accused Licey captain Emilio Bonifacio of violating a signed agreement after receiving $40,000 to participate in the Titanes del Caribe Series but failing to attend.

Ortiz stated that Bonifacio’s absence caused financial losses and diminished the event’s impact, as the highly anticipated matchups between the Tigres del Licey and Águilas Cibaeñas took place in New York and Puerto Rico. He hinted at potential legal action against Licey for non-compliance, expressing frustration over the lack of commitment in an interview with Alofoke Radio Show.

The Hall of Famer emphasized that the event’s success relied on key players, and Licey’s decision not to travel to Puerto Rico disrupted logistics and audience expectations. He suggested that Bonifacio’s actions could have repercussions for the team in future events. The Titanes del Caribe Series remains a major attraction for Dominican winter baseball fans, bringing the iconic rivalry to an international stage.

Former MLB star David Ortiz recently made headlines when he accused fellow Dominican player Emilio Bonifacio of breaching his contract for the upcoming Titanes del Caribe Series.

Ortiz, who is serving as a team owner for the Titanes del Caribe, claimed that Bonifacio, who was signed to play for the team, failed to fulfill his contractual obligations and is now seeking legal action against him.

Sources close to the situation have indicated that Bonifacio allegedly failed to attend team practices and meetings, as well as neglecting to participate in promotional events for the series.

Ortiz expressed his disappointment in Bonifacio’s actions, stating that he believed the player had a lot of potential to contribute to the team’s success.

It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold, but one thing is for certain: tensions are running high in the Titanes del Caribe camp. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • Mets sign 27-year-old versatile infielder to contract

The Mets made a low-risk depth move on Friday afternoon, signing 27-year-old infielder Nick Madrigal, according to The New York Post’s Jon Heyman. Madrigal, a right-handed hitter with experience at both second and third base, has been primarily known for his bat-to-ball skills and defensive versatility. However, his offensive production in recent years has left much to be desired.

Last season, Madrigal appeared in 51 games but had only 94 plate appearances, slashing .221/.280/.256 with 10 RBIs. Power is virtually nonexistent in his game—he has just four career home runs over 285 major league games. Given his limited offensive ceiling, he’s more likely to serve as a depth piece in Triple-A rather than making an immediate impact on the major league roster.

Credit: Mark Hoffman;Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK

    Defensive Fit and Positional Insurance

While Madrigal has experience at both second and third base, the Mets are clearly bringing him in as insurance for Brett Baty, who is currently projected to be the team’s starting third baseman. Madrigal logged 138 innings at third base last season and 91 at second, but his defensive metrics weren’t particularly strong. He combined for -2 defensive runs saved and -5 outs above average, showing that he’s not exactly a standout defender.

Historically, third base has been his stronger position, which is likely why the Mets see value in having him around. With Mark Vientos preparing for a transition to first base—assuming Pete Alonso doesn’t return—the Mets need as many infield depth options as possible. Madrigal fits the bill as a contact hitter who can provide defensive flexibility, but it remains to be seen if he’ll earn a roster spot.

A Role in Triple-A Seems Likely

Given his struggles at the plate and his defensive limitations, Madrigal is more of a safety net than an immediate contributor. The Mets are likely bringing him in to compete for a spot in camp, but barring an injury or an unexpected performance surge, he seems destined to start the season in Syracuse.

For a team looking to solidify its infield situation, this is more of a footnote than a headline-grabbing move. But in a long season, depth matters, and Madrigal gives the Mets another option should they need reinforcement at third base.

The New York Mets have added some infield depth by signing 27-year-old versatile infielder to a contract. This move is sure to bolster their roster and provide some much-needed flexibility in the infield. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting signing! #Mets #InfieldDepth #MLBSigning

  • Blues, Brandon Saad agree to mutual contract termination

The St. Louis Blues have agreed to a mutual contract termination with Brandon Saad, the team announced Wednesday shortly after the veteran forward went unclaimed on waivers.

The 32-year-old forward will give up more than $5 million in salary by agreeing to the termination. In return, he will go on unconditional waivers Thursday, and if he clears, he will become an unrestricted free agent, able to sign elsewhere.

For the Blues, the termination means Saad’s entire $4.5 million cap hit comes off the books.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said the team tried to trade Saad before putting him on waivers Tuesday but could not find a suitable deal. He had one more season remaining on the five-year, $22.5 million free-agent contract he signed in 2021.

“If we could find a match, we would,” Armstrong said. “The market speaks and then you just react.”

Over the past four seasons, Saad has played 274 games for the Blues and is tied for the third-most goals on the team with Brayden Schenn and Robert Thomas (76) and is fifth in points (144).

But this season, Saad has just seven goals and 16 points in 43 games and has seen his average ice time drop to 14:36 per game. He has also been a healthy scratch five times.

On Friday, the St. Louis Blues and forward Brandon Saad have agreed to mutually terminate his contract, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

Saad, who signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract with the Blues in the offseason, has struggled to find his footing with the team, recording just 13 points in 40 games this season.

Both parties felt it was in the best interest of Saad and the Blues to part ways, giving him the opportunity to explore other options and potentially find a better fit elsewhere.

Saad, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, will now look to find a new team to continue his NHL career.

Stay tuned for updates on where Saad may end up next as he hits the open market.

  • St. Louis Blues, Brandon Saad agree to terminate his contract

The St. Louis Blues and Brandon Saad are mutually terminating his contract after he was put on waivers on Wednesday.

Saad will need to go on waivers again before the move can be made official on Thursday.

Saad, 32, will be walking away from $5.425 million in cash owed to him, per PuckPedia. The Blues had tried to trade Saad over the last several months, sources told ESPN, but did not find any partners.

“Obviously the production’s not there,” GM Doug Armstrong said in a midseason news conference on Tuesday. “Right now the cap is tight, and obviously, statistically, he’s not having a great year and he’s got another year left. If we could find a match, we would try.”

Saad has just 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in 43 games this season, along with a 9.3 shooting percentage — the second worst mark of his 14-year career.

Saad, a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Chicago Blackhawks, is under contract through the end of next season with a $4.5 million cap hit. Saad would like to continue playing in the NHL, sources said, but the additional year remaining on his contract and the high cap hit was a roadblock for other teams to claim him on waivers Wednesday or agree to a trade. Saad will now be a free agent and can sign with any other team. The Blues would have been charged a $1.15 million cap hit had Saad played for their AHL affiliate in Springfield; the team will now be cleared of his full contract giving them financial flexibility.

It’s already been a season of transition for St. Louis, which fired coach Drew Bannister in November and hired Jim Montgomery after he was let go in Boston.

The Blues are in what Armstrong has called a retool. The team doesn’t feel it can afford a full rebuild and is working to transition on the fly around a new core group of players in their early 20s: Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou, as well as Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg who were acquired over the summer from offer sheets.

The St. Louis Blues and forward Brandon Saad have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, the team announced today.

Saad, who signed a five-year deal with the Blues in July 2021, has struggled to find his footing with the team this season, recording just 14 points in 39 games. The decision to part ways comes as a surprise to many, as Saad was expected to be a key contributor to the Blues’ lineup.

“We want to thank Brandon for his time with the organization and wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” said Blues general manager Doug Armstrong in a statement. “We believe this decision is in the best interest of both parties and will allow Brandon to explore other opportunities in the NHL.”

Saad, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, will now become an unrestricted free agent and will be free to sign with any team in the league.

Caitlin Clark is reportedly getting another high-profile teammate.

ESPN’s Alexa Philippou reported Friday that veteran forward Natasha Howard agreed to a new deal with the Indiana Fever. This will be her second stint with Indiana, which drafted her with the No. 5 overall pick in 2014.

Howard was a secondary contributor during the first two seasons of her career on the Fever but eventually developed into an All-Star and defensive leader during future stops. She has played for the Minnesota Lynx, Seattle Storm, New York Liberty and Dallas Wings as well.

The 33-year-old was in Dallas the last two seasons and is coming off one of the best scoring efforts of her career in 2024.

She averaged 17.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.3 steals a night while shooting 45.6 percent from the field as a bright spot for a Wings team that struggled on the way to a 9-31 record.

It was yet another impressive season in a career that includes three championships (2017 with Minnesota, 2018 with Seattle and 2020 with Seattle), the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year, the 2018 Most Improved Player, two All-Star selections, two All-Defensive First Team nods and a spot on the 2019 All-WNBA First Team.

This move comes after the Fever announced Wednesday they re-signed Kelsey Mitchell, further underscoring their push toward championship contention with Clark leading the way.

Indiana reached the playoffs last season for the first time since the 2016 campaign but lost in the first round to the Connecticut Sun. Considering it was Clark’s rookie season and the team went 13-27 the year before, all indications were the future is quite bright.

And now it is even brighter after re-signing Mitchell and adding a veteran leader like Howard.

Howard is also the type of experienced player who has reached the sport’s highest stage who can help a young Fever team turn the corner when facing the postseason pressure. She should form quite the one-two punch in the frontcourt with Aliyah Boston as Indiana gears up for the 2025 campaign.

Exciting news in the world of women’s basketball as it has been reported that Natasha Howard has landed a contract with the Indiana Fever in WNBA free agency. The talented forward will be joining forces with rising star Caitlin Clark, creating a dynamic duo that is sure to make waves in the league.

Howard, a two-time WNBA champion and former Defensive Player of the Year, brings a wealth of experience and skill to the Fever roster. Known for her versatility and ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor, Howard will undoubtedly be a key player for Indiana this upcoming season.

With Clark, the sensational rookie guard out of Iowa, leading the charge, the Fever are poised to be a formidable force in the WNBA. Clark has been turning heads with her scoring ability and playmaking skills, and her partnership with Howard is sure to elevate the team to new heights.

Fans can expect an exciting season ahead as Howard and Clark lead the charge for the Fever. Stay tuned for more updates, scores, highlights, stats, and rumors as the WNBA season approaches. It’s going to be a thrilling ride for Indiana Fever fans!
