Report: Vikings Want Sam Darnold Back on New Contract in 2025 Despite McCarthy Pick | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

The Minnesota Vikings made J.J. McCarthy their quarterback of the future when they selected him with the No. 10 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft, but that future may have to wait after Sam Darnold’s excellent season.

“They spent a first-round pick on J.J. McCarthy last spring and Darnold is in for a big payday in March. Despite that, after conversations with a team source, one thing is clear: The Vikings want Darnold back in Minnesota for 2025,” Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported.

Minnesota made the veteran a bridge quarterback when he signed a one-year, $10 million deal last offseason. He was thrust into the starting role when McCarthy suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee before the season.

That seemed to be quite problematic for the Vikings at the time considering Darnold was a combined 21-35 as a starter during his time on the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers before this year.

    NFL @NFL

This Darnold to Jefferson connection is too clean.

: #MINvsSEA on FOX
: https://t.co/waVpO909ge pic.twitter.com/xHhVDimIM2

Darnold was particularly disappointing in New York after the Jets selected him with the No. 3 overall pick of the 2018 NFL draft. Rather than live up to expectations as the franchise quarterback, he threw 39 touchdowns in 38 games and was on a different team in his fourth season.

Yet everything has changed in Minnesota.

The 27-year-old has completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 3,776 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while going 13-2 as a starter. The Vikings are in the middle of the race for the No. 1 seed in the NFC and could set up a winner-take showdown with the Detroit Lions if they defeat the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

At some point, the Vikings will surely want to see what McCarthy offers. Yet potentially landing the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs is impossible to ignore, and it seems like the NFC North team wants to continue building momentum with Darnold.

The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly keen on bringing back quarterback Sam Darnold on a new contract in 2025, despite selecting Justin McCarthy in the recent NFL Draft.

According to sources close to the team, the Vikings view Darnold as a valuable asset and are willing to invest in him for the long term. Despite McCarthy’s selection, the team is reportedly not ready to move on from Darnold just yet.

Darnold, who joined the Vikings in a trade last season, showed promise in his limited playing time and has the support of the coaching staff. The team believes that he can still develop into a franchise quarterback and lead them to success in the future.

While McCarthy may be the quarterback of the future for the Vikings, the team is not rushing to push Darnold out the door. It appears that they are willing to let the two quarterbacks compete for the starting job and see how things play out in the coming seasons.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Vikings navigate their quarterback situation heading into the 2025 season.

Latest news on Dallas Cowboys, Mike McCarthy contract extension talks

Since the Dallas Cowboys 2024 season officially went off the rails in October, the future of head coach Mike McCarthy has been in question.

    And for good reason.

After three-straight 12-5 campaigns in Dallas, this year’s version of the Cowboys fell well short of that mark, Following as low as 3-7 at one point, and losing in blowout fashion on four separate occasions. However, the team has also shown resiliency, winning four of their las tfive, while scratching and clawing their way back to 7-8.

MORE: Dallas Cowboys’ Micah Parsons has one goal vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Now, many believe McCarthy could have saved his job and earned another shot.

But according to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, there have been no meaningful discussions either way regarding the head coaches future with America’s team.

“There have been no substantive talks yet about an extension for McCarthy in Dallas,” the insiders said in the report.

The Cowboys themselves have been open about his as well, telling the media on multiple occasions that they have not discussed McCarthy’s future with the franchise. Even after the team’s dramatic 26-24 win over the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football, team owner Jerry Jones was quick to dismiss questions about contract talks.

That said, he did also go out of his way to praise McCarthy for what he has helped his team overcome this season, even dropping some hints as to which way he is leaning.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of the way the coaching staff, led by Mike McCarthy, the way that the leadership on this team, and really proud of these young players,” Jones said after the win over Tampa Bay. “They just are growing mentally and physically by leaps and bounds, which makes me think we’ve got an outstanding future ahead of us.”

Of course, if you have been following the Cowboys for any length of time, you also know that this is pretty much par for the course for the Jones family, who rarely discuss contracts between coaches or players during the season, regardless of the situation.

They did the same thing with Jason Garrett, waiting till the end of the final year of his contract in both 2015, when he was extended for five years, and in 2019, when he was not retained, to make a decision on his future.

Now, it appears they are prepared to do the exact same with McCarthy, and wait until the season officially ends to make make up their mind.

The latest news on the Dallas Cowboys is that they are currently in talks with head coach Mike McCarthy regarding a contract extension. McCarthy, who joined the Cowboys in 2020, has led the team to a 10-6 record in his second season at the helm.

Sources close to the negotiations have indicated that both parties are optimistic about reaching a new deal that will keep McCarthy in Dallas for the foreseeable future. The Cowboys are reportedly pleased with the progress the team has made under McCarthy’s leadership and believe he is the right man to guide them to future success.

While the terms of the potential contract extension have not been disclosed, it is expected to be a multi-year deal that will provide stability and continuity for the Cowboys moving forward. In a recent, extensive interview on “Insight With Chris Van Vliet,” Copeland revealed that he had about 18 months left on his AEW contract and a pretty full dance card until then.

“I have about a year and a half left right now,” The former two-time AEW TNT Champion said. “A lot of business trying to get done in that time, there’s a lot of people I want to work within that time, and I look at it already and I think in the six months I’ve been there I think I’m close to 20 matches already.”

“When I retire this time,” Copeland said. “I truly — I’m going to come home and be dad, and occasionally act, and walk my dogs.”

Copeland originally retired in 2011 due to a career-threatening neck injury, which was expected to end his wrestling career. Despite this, he made occasional WWE appearances until making a surprise return in the 2020 Royal Rumble.

ORLANDO, Fla. — New contract, same vision.

Amid all the confounding changes in college football, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell’s leaning into his program’s long-standing strength: Stability.

“I know I’m not perfect, and I know Iowa State’s not always perfect in terms of how we play football,” said Campbell, who earlier this month agreed to a new, eight-year contract that extends through 2032. “But I think how we’ve tried to play, and the spirit that our kids have played with, and the ability to give our football program success here, and something for this fan base to believe in every Saturday — I’m really proud of that.”

Terms of the new deal will be disclosed at a later date, but it’s clear that Campbell, director of athletics Jamie Pollard, and Iowa State University president Wendy Wintersteen share the same long-term goals for an 18th-ranked Cyclones team (10-3) that will play No. 13 Miami (10-2) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (ABC) in the Pop-Tarts Bowl at Camping World Stadium.

“Just getting back home and playing in Florida is a big thing,” said ISU’s second-team All-Big 12 cornerback Jontez Williams, who grew up about two hours north of Orlando in Starke, Fla. “I’m just ready for the moment.”

Williams and his compatriots will try to slow down the Hurricanes’ scoring offense, which leads the FBS at 44.2 points per game. He’ll listen intently to veteran defensive coordinator Jon Heacock and his position coach, Hank Poteat, in order to make that possible.

And speaking of stability — Heacock’s the rock-steady example of it among Campbell’s staff, as he’s been with him for 10-plus seasons, first at Toledo, then at ISU.

“When we walked into this place nine years ago, (our goal) was we wanted to make this place special,” said Heacock, whose defense will be down one starter because junior defensive end Tyler Onyedim unexpectedly entered the transfer portal recently. “We wanted to make this place different than it’s ever been, and we’ve worked really hard to do that. And for me, the best thing that could happen would be for these seniors who’ve led this team these last couple years (to go out with a win). They certainly deserve everything they’ve got. We didn’t handle our business (in the Big 12 title game), and we’ve got one more chance. We’ve got one more chance to handle it the right way and it’s gonna take everything we’ve got with the team that we’re playing against.”

But first the Cyclones will fully lean into that internal stability, which exists on both sides of the ball. First-year offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser’s been a staffer back to the Toledo days, and defensive line coach Eli Rasheed’s been along for the ride with Campbell his entire head coaching career. So the continuity is strong, which allows ISU to seek out prospective players who “fit” the program, whether as developmental players or via the portal.

Campbell depends on the former more than the latter, because at his core, he considers himself a teacher and mentor above all else. That’s why his vision never changes even as college football experiences seismic shifts and looming roster size limits. He’s found his niche — and he’s thriving within it.

For the past several seasons, at least.

“No matter what, or when, it’s time to take a step back from coaching, I feel like I can look myself in the mirror and say, ‘You know what? We at least tried every single day we walked in here to make everybody proud of what this program was about,’” Campbell said. “And we tried to do it the right way.”

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell enters Pop-Tarts Bowl with new contract, same vision – CycloneFanatic.com

Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell has signed a new contract extension, solidifying his commitment to the Cyclones program for the foreseeable future. As he prepares to lead his team into the Pop-Tarts Bowl, Campbell remains focused on his ultimate goal of building a championship-caliber program in Ames.

Despite rumors of potential interest from other programs, Campbell has made it clear that Iowa State is where he wants to be. With the support of the administration and the fan base, he is determined to continue the upward trajectory of the program and establish Iowa State as a force to be reckoned with in college football.

As the Cyclones gear up for their bowl game, Campbell’s unwavering dedication to his team and his vision for the program shines through. With a new contract in hand, he is ready to lead Iowa State to victory in the Pop-Tarts Bowl and beyond.

  • Corbin Burnes agrees to $210M contract with Diamondbacks

Corbin Burnes agrees to $210M contract with Diamondbacks

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - OCTOBER 01: Corbin Burnes #39 of the Baltimore Orioles pitches the ball against the Kansas City Royals during the second inning of Game One of the Wild Card Series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on October 01, 2024 in Baltimore, Maryland. Corbin Burnes is headed to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and it wasn’t cheap.

The 2021 Cy Young Award winner agreed to a six-year, $210 million deal with the Diamondbacks early Saturday morning. Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported the agreement, which has an opt-out for Burnes after two seasons.

The contract is the largest in Diamondbacks history. Burnes, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, will now pitch for the local team after reportedly turning down offers from the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays.

The deal ends Burnes’ tenure with the Baltimore Orioles after one season. The AL East contenders went for a splashy trade last winter by acquiring the right-hander from the Milwaukee Brewers, but it ended up being a one-year rental.

It’s not like Burnes didn’t deliver for Baltimore. From his Opening Day start (6 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 11 strikeouts) to his sole postseason start (8 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 3 strikeouts), Burnes was the bona fide ace the Orioles were looking for when they traded for him, but his free-agent market was likely out of Baltimore’s price range.

Because Burnes turned down a qualifying offer from Baltimore, the Orioles will receive draft pick compensation from his new team.

Looking over the past half-decade, there is no question that Burnes has been one of MLB’s top aces.

Since the 2020 season, Burnes ranks third in MLB in innings pitched with 816 2/3, fourth in ERA at 2.88, sixth in FIP at 3.01, second in strikeouts with 946 and fourth in bWAR with 18.6. There is nothing you could look for in a pitcher that Burnes isn’t great at.

It remains an impressive success story for a player who was legitimately one of the worst pitchers in MLB in 2019. In 49 innings pitched, Burnes posted a galling 8.82 ERA. That remains the worst ERA by any pitcher in Brewers history with at least 40 innings pitched. Only 23 pitchers in MLB history have posted a worse mark in that many innings.

Then Burnes turned his career around by introducing a cutter that is now his signature pitch. That said, he actually cut down his cutter usage from 55.4% to 45% this season while still having a great season.

However, there are some reasons for concern that Burnes could be on the decline, starting with the fact that he’s already north of 30 years old. After posting whiff rates above 35% from 2019 to 2022, he fell below 29% in 2023 and 2024. This past season, batters also both swung and made contact with pitches in the zone from Burnes at the highest rate since his miserable 2019 season.

Burnes’ velocity has stayed steady so far in his career, but in 2024, he struck out batters at a mediocre rate by MLB standards and at an abysmal rate by his own standards. Quite a few ERA predictors haven’t been fans of his peripherals over the past two seasons as well.

Still, what matters are results, and Burnes has continued to deliver. Even a pitcher performing at 90% of Burnes’ prime is one of the most valuable pitchers in the game, and there are pitchers older than Burnes who are still getting paid tens of millions per year.

Giving Burnes this much money is fine, and he would be a great addition for any team. It’s just important to be aware of what trends he needs to buck to stay among MLB’s elite.

In a blockbuster deal, the Arizona Diamondbacks have reportedly agreed to a massive $210 million contract with star pitcher Corbin Burnes. The agreement, which is said to be for 7 years, solidifies the Diamondbacks’ rotation and makes Burnes one of the highest-paid players in baseball.

Burnes, who is coming off a Cy Young-winning season with the Milwaukee Brewers, was highly sought after by multiple teams in free agency. However, the Diamondbacks were able to secure his services with their lucrative offer.

The 27-year-old right-hander has established himself as one of the most dominant pitchers in the game, boasting a career 2.89 ERA and a staggering 13.5 K/9 rate. His addition to the Diamondbacks’ rotation is expected to elevate the team to championship contention.

Fans of the Diamondbacks are thrilled with the news, as Burnes brings a much-needed boost to their pitching staff. With Burnes now locked up long-term, the Diamondbacks look poised to make a serious run at the World Series in the coming years. Stay tuned for more updates as the deal becomes official.
