  • Justin Timberlake On Convincing Beyoncé To Do ‘Single Ladies’ SNL’ Bit

A big part of the job at Saturday Night Live in the week leading up to showtime is convincing that week’s host or musical guest to appear in sketches that sometimes sound bizarre at best, or potentially disastrous at worst. That was the dilemma frequent SNL guest Justin Timberlake found himself in November 2008 when cast member Andy Samberg hit him up to see if he was in town to hop in on a bit that castmate Bobby Moynihan had cooked up.

“He said Bobby Moynihan has this great idea for a sketch about you, me, and him being Beyoncé’s background dancers that never made the cut,” Timberlake explained in the three-hour doc Ladies & Gentleman… 50 Years of SNL Music, which aired on NBC on Monday night (Jan. 27). “I was like ‘full leotard’? And he’s like, ‘yeah.’ I was like, ‘This is too funny. We have to do this.’”

Here’s the thing: the three guys were totally down, but convincing Queen Bey to get super silly with them was going to be another matter entirely. In the exhaustive look at the show’s musical history co-directed by Oscar-winning Roots drummer Questlove, current SNL star Bowen Yang explained that “when you pitch a sketch that the musical guest is involved in potentially it can always go wrong.”

And, according to JT, at first Beyoncé was not into it. At all.

“She was very polite about it, but she was very hesitant. And when I say hesitant, I mean like, she was not having it,” Timberlake said. “I’m like: Does she know how funny this is gonna be? How beloved this whole moment will be?” Determined to commit to the bit, Timberlake decided that he had to show his fellow pop superstar how far he was willing to go to convince her.

“I put the leotard and the heels and the hose on and everything, and put a robe on,” he said. “I walked and knocked on her door, I threw the robe down and put my hands on my hips and she was like, ‘No you didn’t!’” Long story short, Bey said yea and the rest is SNL history.

In the final sketch (which is not officially available on YouTube), host Paul Rudd plays the “Single Ladies” video director introducing the singer to her new backup dancers, who she is nervous about.

“Oh look, don’t worry about the other dancers, B-Town,” Rudd tells her. “I hand-picked them myself, these guys are pros.” The three men then enter in all their black leotard, white tights and black heels regalia, assuring Bey that they are definitely warmed up, “like biscuits,” Moynihan says, with Timberlake adding the unhelpful second helping, “yeah, dance biscuits!”

Smash cut to the trio gyrating impertinently on, around and at Beyoncé and the singer repeatedly stopping filming until Rudd finally admits that they are his stepsons, who his wife said he had to spend more time with. “Aww, I didn’t know these were your sons,” Beyoncé says. “That’s very noble of you.”

“So you’ll let them be in your music video?” Rudd asks. “Hell no,” Bey replies.

Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music is available to stream now on Peacock.

In a recent interview, Justin Timberlake revealed how he convinced Beyoncé to do the iconic “Single Ladies” sketch on Saturday Night Live. Timberlake, who was hosting the show at the time, knew that Beyoncé was hesitant about doing comedic sketches, but he managed to persuade her by showcasing his own impressive dance moves and assuring her that they would have a blast on stage together.

The sketch, which featured Timberlake and Beyoncé in leotards, dancing to the hit song “Single Ladies,” became an instant classic and solidified Timberlake’s reputation as a talented comedic actor. Fans of both artists were thrilled to see them collaborate in such a fun and unexpected way.

It just goes to show that sometimes, all it takes is a little friendly persuasion and a shared love of music and dance to create something truly memorable. Cheers to Justin Timberlake for his persuasive skills and to Beyoncé for being a good sport and delivering a performance that will go down in SNL history.

Devils Respond After Holidays With Convincing Win | GAME STORY

“Found a way to win,” said Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe. “I don’t think it was our best game by any means, but anytime you can get two points, score four at even strength against a team like that and win on home ice, you’re certainly going to take it.”

The bench boss noted it was a tough matchup for the first game after the three-day holiday break.

“Playing against a team that’s willing to shoot the puck, tough for everybody — goalies included — coming off a break. Got better as the game went on and some huge saves to keep us in it.”

Brent Burns took a shot from the point that was tipped on its way in by Jackson Blake. Jacob Markstrom got a piece of it, but the puck trickled through him and sat in the crease. From there, Eric Robinson pounced on it and pushed it across the line to get the Hurricanes on the board first.

With 3:48 to go in the first, Markstrom made a nice play to advance the puck up to Jack Hughes. Hughes moved it Jonas Siegenthaler who dished it to Jonathan Kovacevic. Kovacevic wristed it on goal from the point where Ondrej Palat got a piece of it to tie the game at 1-1.

Forty-two seconds later, the Devils took the lead. Stefan Noesen skated in on a two-on-one with Nico Hischier. He dished the puck over to the captain and Hischier made no mistake, with a high blocker shot. On that play, Luke Hughes made a beautiful stretch pass over to Noesen to spring him on the rush.

“Starts with a great pass by Luke,” Hischier exclaimed. “Noes gave me a great pass as well and I found the corner.”

Keefe added that goal was a textbook play.

“Nico’s goal, find a way to break through pressure. When you break through pressure you end up with a look like that. Doesn’t happen very often but it all came together there.”

The first penalty of the game went to Dougie Hamilton for interference, giving Carolina the man advantage with 1:45 to go in the first.

Devils were able to kill that off without allowing a shot but only 22 seconds into the middle frame, Carolina tied the game up. Brent Burns took the puck between the hashmarks and fired a wrist shot past Markstrom to make it 2-2.

New Jersey moved back in front less than four minutes later. Luke Hughes took a quick shot from the bottom of the left circle, beating Kochetkov.

“I saw my guy out of position and saw Pesce had a clean look at it,” noted Hughes. “I knew he was going to shoot it and I got a nice rebound and put it in there.”

“You talk often about depth scoring, the defense are part of that. You need them involved. If you’re going to generate consistent offense in today’s NHL five-on-five, your defense have to be engaged and have to be part of it. We’ve had great contributions,” stated Keefe.

That 3-2 lead turned into a 4-2 lead before the game hit the midway point. Dawson Mercer was perched in front of the net and showed some patience before backhanding it past Kochetkov to double the home team’s edge.

With six minutes to go in the second, there was a scramble in front of the Hurricanes net. After Hischier brought the puck out front, Noesen jammed it in but after a lengthy video review, it was ruled no goal.

“He said the whistle was blown before but I don’t know, I’d have to go look at it,” said Hischer. Keefe added that because the ruling was tied to the whistle, there was nothing he could have done, either.

“They told me that they had deemed it to be a dead puck so it’s not even one that we can challenge.”

The final 8:11 of the game went without a whistle as the Devils kept the Hurricanes at bay. Final shot count in the game was 31-23 for Carolina.

The Devils came out swinging after the holiday break, delivering a convincing win over their opponent in a thrilling game at home. From the opening puck drop, the Devils showed a renewed sense of energy and determination on the ice.

The offense was firing on all cylinders, with the Devils controlling the play and generating scoring chances throughout the game. Goals were coming from all angles, with players stepping up and contributing in a big way. The team’s power play was especially lethal, converting on multiple opportunities to keep the pressure on their opponent.

Defensively, the Devils were rock-solid, shutting down the opposing team’s top scorers and limiting their chances in front of the net. The goaltender was also in top form, making key saves when called upon and keeping the Devils in the game.

Overall, it was a complete team effort that led to the Devils’ impressive victory. The players showed resilience and determination, bouncing back after the holiday break with a statement win. With this performance, the Devils have set the tone for the rest of the season and shown that they are a force to be reckoned with in the league.

Stay tuned for more exciting games from the Devils as they continue their quest for success this season. #GoDevilsGo #WinningStreak #HockeySeason
