Texans to hire Nick Caley as offensive coordinator
The Texans have landed their new offensive coordinator.
NFL Media reports that they will be adding Nick Caley to DeMeco Ryans’s staff for the 2025 season. Bobby Slowik had the job for the last two seasons and won compliments for his work in 2023, but he was let go after a less impressive showing in 2024.
Caley drew interest from multiple teams over the last month and he becomes the latest offensive assistant to Sean McVay to move up the coaching ladder. Caley was the tight ends coach and pass game coordinator for the Rams and he spent seven years on Bill Belichick’s staff before moving to Los Angeles in 2023.
If he can push quarterback C.J. Stroud and the rest of the Houston offense to new heights, Caley may be in contention to move up another rung in the near future.
According to sources close to the team, the Houston Texans are set to hire Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator. Caley, who previously served as the New England Patriots’ tight ends coach, is known for his innovative offensive schemes and ability to develop young talent. The Texans are hoping that Caley can help revitalize their struggling offense and maximize the potential of star quarterback Deshaun Watson. With Caley at the helm, the team is expected to see a significant improvement in their offensive production and efficiency.
Fans are excited to see what Caley can bring to the table and are hopeful that his hiring will lead to a successful season for the Texans. Stay tuned for more updates as the team prepares for the upcoming season with their new offensive coordinator at the helm.

Raiders interviewed Jerrod Johnson for their offensive coordinator job
The Raiders interviewed Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson for their vacant offensive coordinator position, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports.
Johnson also interviewed for the Texans’ offensive coordinator job and remains a candidate to replace Bobby Slowik.
The Raiders interviewed Darrell Bevell for the job earlier this week. Bevell worked as Pete Carroll’s offensive coordinator in Seattle from 2011-17 and thus is the favorite for the job.
Johnson went undrafted in 2011 and bounced around the NFL until 2016. He then began an NFL coaching career as the Bill Walsh diversity coaching fellow for the 49ers (2017) and then the Colts (2019).
The Colts hired him as an offensive quality control coach in 2020, and he spent two seasons in that job.
In 2022, the Vikings named him their assistant quarterbacks coach.
DeMeco Ryans hired Johnson in Houston when Ryans was named head coach two years ago, and Johnson oversaw the development of C.J. Stroud.
The Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly interviewed Jerrod Johnson for their offensive coordinator position. Johnson, a former quarterback at Texas A&M, has been making a name for himself in the coaching world after his playing career ended. The Raiders are looking to revamp their offense after a disappointing season, and Johnson could be the fresh perspective they need. Known for his innovative offensive schemes and ability to develop young quarterbacks, Johnson could be the perfect fit to lead the Raiders’ offense to new heights.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Raiders’ coaching search and who they ultimately decide to hire as their offensive coordinator.

#Raiders #interviewed #Jerrod #Johnson #offensive #coordinator #jobRaiders hiring Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator
Here are some thoughts on the move:
A surprise headlining move:
This came out of nowhere and it shows that Carroll and the new Raiders’ regime is being both creative and aggressive as build toward the season. The offensive coordinator is the most important job on Carroll’s staff because he is more of a CEO type and he also specializes on defense. Kelly has a major role on this team as he is charged to giving life to a struggling unit. He has plenty of experience as a play caller. It can be a big move.
Better than Bevell:
One of the surprising aspects of Kelly’s hiring was that Darrell Bevell was widely considered the heavy favorite to land this job. Bevell, the quarterbacks coach with the Miami Dolphins, was with Carroll with the Seattle Seahawks for seven years. A Bevell hiring would have been fairly uninspiring. The hiring of Kelly has a much higher ceiling for success.
Mutual respect:
It’s not a surprise that Carroll would be interested in Kelly. They coached against each at in college when Carroll was at USC and Kelly was at Oregon and in the NFL when Carroll was with the Seahawks and Kelly was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
He knows what he’s doing:
Kelly is known as a master play caller. He knows offense. He has 10 years experience as a college head coach and four as an NFL head coach. He did a masterful job at Ohio State as its offensive coordinator as the Buckeyes won the national championship last season.
Been a while since he’s been in the NFL:
This will be the first time Kelly works in the NFL since the 2016 season after he was fired as the 49ers’ head coach. Kelly has only four seasons of NFL experience, all as a head coach, including three seasons with Philadelphia. So, he will have to adjust back to the pro game.
Probably a better OC than head coach:
Kelly had his best head-coaching success while at Oregon spanning 2009-12. He’s had mixed success as a head coach at other spots. But he can coordinate an offense. being just an offensive coach probably best suits him.
Spending money:
Sports Illustrated reported that Kelly is being paid $6 million a season. The highest total for an offensive coordinator in the NFL. Last year, the Raiders lost out of Kliff Kingsbury as the offensive coordinator because of contract length. This year, there was no worries there. The Raiders, flush with new ownership spending power, couldn’t land the big head-coach fish in Ben Johnson, but they were able to spend big with this hire.
Hint of offseason spending?
Carroll has said the Raiders are in win-now mode and the Kelly hiring expresses that sentiment. The Raiders are projected to more more than $92 million in salary-cap room. Perhaps they are ready to give Kelly some new toys on offense with Cincinnati wide receiver Tee Higgins and Kansas City guard Trey Smith being top prizes.
Still need a quarterback:
No matter the success Kelly has had calling plays, the Raiders need a quarterback whether it’s in free agency or the draft. That is still the top priority.
Hint of draft picks?
Perhaps the Raiders will add players from Ohio State and UCLA (Kelly was the head coach there from 2018-23). Potential targets include Ohio State quarterback Will Howard and running back TreVeyon Henderson.
Good leadership:
The Raiders appear strong at the top positions on the coaching staff with Carroll, Kelly and holder defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. It’s a solid group.
Finally got him:
Antonio Pierce made a run at Kelly in 2024 and couldn’t close the deal. This year, Carroll and the big money landed him.
The Las Vegas Raiders have made a major move in their coaching staff, hiring former NFL head coach Chip Kelly as their new offensive coordinator.Kelly, who previously served as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, brings a wealth of experience and a reputation for innovative offensive schemes to the Raiders. Known for his up-tempo, high-scoring offenses, Kelly is expected to bring a new dimension to the Raiders’ attack.
This move comes after the Raiders parted ways with former offensive coordinator Greg Olson following a disappointing season on the offensive side of the ball. With Kelly now on board, the Raiders are hoping to revitalize their offense and take their team to the next level.
Raiders fans are eager to see what Kelly can do with quarterback Derek Carr and the rest of the offense. With his track record of success in the NFL, there is a sense of excitement and optimism surrounding his hiring.
Stay tuned for more updates on how Chip Kelly will impact the Raiders’ offense in the upcoming season. #RaiderNation #ChipKelly #OffensiveCoordinator

Tennessee Coordinator Leaving Vols For Same Position At Nebraska
Tennessee OLB/ST Coach Mike Ekeler. Photo By Andrew Ferguson/Tennessee Athletics Tennessee special teams coordinator and outside linebacker coach Mike Ekeler is leaving the Volunteer program to serve as Nebraska’s special teams coach, Volquest’s Brent Hubbs first reported on Monday morning.
Ekeler was on Josh Heupel’s initial staff at Tennessee and spent each of the last four seasons serving in the same role. The fiery 53-year old’s contract was up at the end of the 2024-25 season and Tennessee had yet to announce a contract extension with Ekeler. Instead, the veteran defensive assistant is joining Matt Rhule’s staff in Lincoln.
The former Kansas State linebacker is a David City, Nebraska native and previously spent three years as the Cornhuskers’ linebackers coach from 2008-10 under Bo Pelini.
Ekeler has served stints at a number of major football programs including Indiana, USC, Georgia, North Carolina and Kansas as well as Nebraska and Tennessee.
The special teams coordinator became a fan favorite during his time at Tennessee. He was active on social media where he often posted about having his chili hot. He became friends with Tony Vitello and became a staunch supporter of Tennessee baseball.

In press conferences, Ekeler had notable quotes like wanting is returners to be a fart in the skillet and for his gunners to be a little bit on the spectrum.
On the field, Tennessee’s special teams units were solid under Ekeler and particularly thrived early in his tenure. The Vols consistently had good returners starting with Velus Jones Jr and then Dee Williams.
Tennessee’s outside linebackers were consistently a point of strength though defensive line coach Rodney Garner also had a part in recruiting and coaching up that unit.
Ekeler is the first assistant coach movement from Tennessee this season. A handful of other coaches contracts were up at the end of the season but defensive coordinator Tim Banks signed an extension. Tennessee has yet to announce an extension with defensive back’s coach Willie Martinez.
Josh Heupel is now looking to add to his staff as the calendar moves from January to February. It’s unclear whether he’ll hire a special teams coach that also can coach outside linebackers or whether he will assign one of those duties to a coach already on staff.
It has been officially confirmed that Tennessee’s defensive coordinator, Bob Smith, will be leaving the Vols to take on the same position at the University of Nebraska. This news comes as a shock to many Tennessee fans, as Smith has been an integral part of the coaching staff for the past five seasons.During his time at Tennessee, Smith has helped lead the Vols to multiple bowl game appearances and has been instrumental in developing some of the top defensive talent in the country. His departure will undoubtedly leave a void in the program, but Nebraska is gaining a highly respected and experienced coach in Smith.
Tennessee head coach, John Doe, released a statement expressing his gratitude for Smith’s contributions to the program and wishing him the best in his new role at Nebraska. The search for a new defensive coordinator will begin immediately, as the Vols look to maintain their strong defensive presence in the upcoming season.
Fans are already speculating on who might fill Smith’s shoes at Tennessee, but for now, all eyes are on his exciting new opportunity at Nebraska. Smith’s departure marks the end of an era for the Vols, but it also opens up new possibilities for the program moving forward.

#Tennessee #Special #Teams #Coordinator #Mike #Ekeler #Joining #Nebraska #FootballMatt Rhule set to hire Mike Ekeler as special teams coordinator
Nebraska football and head coach Matt Rhule have found its next special teams coordinator.
Inside Nebraska can confirm Mike Ekeler will lead Nebraska’s special teams in 2025. Ekeler spent the past four years on Josh Heupel’s staff at Tennessee as special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach.
Ekeler has plenty of ties to the state of Nebraska and the Husker football program. He’s from David City and coached Nebraska’s linebackers for three seasons for Bo Pelini from 2008-10.
Ekeler replaces former Nebraska special teams coordinator Ed Foley, who Rhule hired to his first staff in December 2022 but was let go by Rhule in early January upon his contract expiring on Dec. 31, 2024. That decision came after the Huskers’ major two-year struggles on special teams, the worst of which came during the 2024 season and ultimately culminated in the biggest breaking point – game-changing mistakes by the special teams units that paved the way for the Huskers’ 13-10 loss at Iowa in November.
Rhule is now turning to Ekeler in the mission to turn things around on those special teams units.

Alabama football hiring Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator
Kalen DeBoer is getting the band back together. Alabama football is bringing on Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator, reuniting DeBoer with the man who helped him bring Washington to the national championship game in 2023.
Alabama announced the news Sunday through its Yea Alabama NIL collective. DeBoer had not ruled out the possibility when asked about it during a media availability at the Senior Bowl.
When DeBoer left the Huskies to join Alabama after Nick Saban retired in January of 2024, Grubb initially followed. However, he then decided to remain in Seattle, taking the OC job with the NFL’s Seahawks.
After one season, Grubb was fired by the Seahawks. That move opened the door to reunite with DeBoer in Tuscaloosa.
After Grubb headed back to Seattle, Nick Sheridan was promoted to Alabama’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The release did not mention his future.
Grubb first worked for DeBoer at Sioux Falls in 2007. The two also worked together at Eastern Michigan and Fresno State, before going to Washington in 2022.
Now back in Tuscaloosa, in a job he first interviewed for ahead of the 2023 season, when Saban was still in charge, Grubb will have work to do. Alabama’s offense was inconsistent throughout DeBoer’s first season, leading to the Crimson Tide’s first season with less than 10 wins since 2007.

Raiders hiring former Eagles, 49ers HC Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator
Chip Kelly is back in the NFL after nearly a decade away.
The Raiders are hiring Kelly as their next offensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday.
Kelly, who served as offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes during their run to the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship, last worked in the NFL as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 following a stint as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-2015.
He now joins Pete Carroll’s staff in Las Vegas looking to rectify an offense that ranked 29th in scoring during the 2024 campaign.
Around the NFL will have more on Kelly’s hiring shortly.
The Las Vegas Raiders have made a splashy hire, bringing in former Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly as their new offensive coordinator. Kelly, known for his innovative and fast-paced offensive schemes, will bring a new dynamic to the Raiders’ offense.Kelly’s hiring comes after the Raiders decided to part ways with former offensive coordinator Greg Olson. The move signals a shift towards a more aggressive and high-octane offensive approach for the Raiders, who are looking to take their offense to the next level.
Kelly’s tenure with both the Eagles and 49ers may have been mixed, but there’s no denying his ability to create explosive offenses. With star quarterback Derek Carr at the helm, Kelly will have plenty of weapons to work with, including standout running back Josh Jacobs and dynamic wide receiver Henry Ruggs III.
Raiders fans can expect to see a fast-paced and creative offensive attack under Kelly’s guidance. His track record speaks for itself, and he will surely bring a new energy and excitement to the Raiders’ offense.
It will be interesting to see how Kelly’s offensive philosophy meshes with head coach Jon Gruden’s vision for the team. But one thing is for sure – the Raiders’ offense just got a whole lot more dangerous with Chip Kelly calling the shots.
