  • Lions to interview Bucs LB coach Larry Foote for defensive coordinator

The Lions’ plans to restock their coaching staff could involve a pair of additions from the Buccaneers.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that the Lions will interview Bucs inside linebackers coach and pass game coordinator Larry Foote for their defensive coordinator vacancy. They are also expected to hire Tampa’s defensive line coach and run game coordinator Kacy Rodgers as their defensive line coach.

Working for the Lions would represent a homecoming for Foote. He attended high school in Detroit before going to Michigan and embarking on a 13-year career as a NFL linebacker. Foote spent most of that time with the Steelers and won two Super Bowls, but also played one season for the Lions.

Foote went into coaching with the Cardinals in 2015 and he has been on Tampa’s staff since the 2019 season.

The Detroit Lions are set to interview Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker coach Larry Foote for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Foote, who has been with the Buccaneers since 2019, has helped lead one of the top defenses in the league over the past few seasons.

The Lions are looking to revamp their defense after a disappointing season, and Foote could be the perfect fit to help turn things around. Known for his knowledge of the game and ability to develop young talent, Foote could bring a fresh perspective to the Lions’ defense.

Stay tuned for updates on the Lions’ coaching search and whether Foote will be the one to lead their defense in the upcoming season.

  • Detroit Lions interviewing Larry Foote for defensive coordinator position

The first known candidate for the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator position has been revealed. According to a report from Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions are interviewing Larry Foote for the position.

Per Bucs reporter Rick Stroud, Foote’s contract is over in Tampa, but the Buccaneers would like him back.

Foote, a Detroit native, was a standout linebacker for the University of Michigan from 1999-2001. As an NFL player, Foote was a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and even spent one season with the Lions in 2009.

His coaching career dates back to 2015, his first year after retiring as a player. He spent his first four years with the Arizona Cardinals, coaching the linebacker unit before jumping to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—where he’s been since 2019. In those first three years, he was the team’s outside linebackers coach, then transitioning to the inside linebackers coach in 2022 while also being the team’s pass game coordinator.

If Foote lands the job in Detroit, he’ll re-join the newest member of Detroit’s defensive coaching staff: defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers. Both Rodgers and Foote have worked together for the past six years under head coach Todd Bowles. Since Rodgers and Foote joined the Buccaneers, their defense has ranked in the top 10 in points allowed three times, and only ranked in the bottom half of the league once (29th in the regime’s first season).

We’ll see who else will interview for the job as more reports come in. As always, you can catch the latest Lions coaching news over on our 2025 NFL coaching carousel tracker.

The Detroit Lions are in the process of interviewing former NFL linebacker Larry Foote for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Foote, who spent 13 seasons in the league playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions, has been coaching in the NFL since 2010.

Foote has most recently served as the linebackers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he helped lead their defense to a Super Bowl victory in 2021. His experience as both a player and a coach make him a strong candidate for the Lions’ defensive coordinator position.

The Lions are looking to bolster their defense after finishing near the bottom of the league in several defensive categories last season. Foote’s knowledge of the game and his ability to develop young players could be just what the team needs to turn their defense around.

Stay tuned for updates on the Detroit Lions’ search for a new defensive coordinator as they continue to interview candidates like Larry Foote.

  • Bears to interview Rams assistant head coach for defensive coordinator position

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson will interview Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator and assitant head coach Aubrey Pleasant for the Bears’ defensive coordinator position, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Pleasant has been with the Rams since 2023, when he joined the team as Sean McVay’s defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator before being promoted in 2024 to assistant head coach.

Prior to the Rams, Pleasant spent time with Ben Johnson in Detroit where he served as the Lions’ defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator in 2021. He had a one-year stint in Green Bay as an offensive consultant in 2022.

All total, Pleasant has been coaching in the NFL since 2013 and has a wide range of experience, but his resume doesn’t suggest he’d be the kind of splash hire many Bears fans are expecting for Johnson’s staff.

Pleasant was fired by the Lions midway through the 2022 season. Although he’s rehabilitated his career under McVay, I think it’s safe to say hiring him to serve as the Bears’ defensive coordinator would be a questionable call.

Still, we’re in the ‘In Ben Johnson We Trust’ era. If Johnson likes Pleasant, then there’s no reason for Bears fans to object.

The Chicago Bears are set to interview Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach and linebackers coach, Joe Barry, for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Barry has been with the Rams since 2017 and has played a key role in their dominant defense.

The Bears are looking to revamp their defense after a disappointing season and believe that Barry’s experience and expertise could help turn things around. Barry has a strong track record of success in the NFL, having previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Football Team and the Detroit Lions.

Stay tuned for updates on the Bears’ coaching search and whether Joe Barry will be the one to lead their defense in the upcoming season.

  • Bengals expected to hire Notre Dame’s Al Golden as defensive coordinator: Source

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals may have landed a successor for former defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. They didn’t have to look far.

Cincinnati is finalizing a deal to hire Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden to run its defense, according to a team source. Golden helped lead the Fighting Irish to Monday night’s College Football Playoff national championship game where they lost to Ohio State. He is expected to officially sign with the team on Thursday.

Golden, 55, is a familiar face for Bengals coach Zac Taylor after he served as the linebackers coach in Cincinnati for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Golden left the Bengals to become Notre Dame DC after the team’s Super Bowl loss to the Los Angeles Rams in February 2022.

The Bengals are looking for a coach capable of getting more out of the eight top-100 picks on the defensive side of the ball that have disappointed in recent years. Cincinnati’s defense fell to 25th in points allowed per drive in 2023 and 26th in 2024. A coach with a background of success connecting at the college level adds to Golden’s appeal and he can undeniably make that claim.

Notre Dame ranked second in FBS in scoring defense this past season and seventh in 2023.

The Bengals went 9-8 and missed the playoffs by one game despite an MVP-level season from quarterback Joe Burrow, a triple crown season from wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and a sacks title from Trey Hendrickson. The team went 3-4 when scoring at least 33 points. The rest of the NFL was 79-7.

Cincinnati was searching for a new defensive coordinator after firing Anarumo on Jan. 6. He worked as the Bengals’ defensive coordinator for all six years Taylor has been at the helm. Former Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham was also a finalist for DC.

Golden first made a name for himself as the head coach of Temple University from 2006 to 2010. He took over a program that went 3-31 the three seasons before his arrival. In Golden’s final two years at Temple, the Owls finished 17-8. Golden turned his success there into becoming the head coach at the University of Miami and held the job for four seasons, going 32-25.

Golden shifted to the NFL for the first time in 2016, coaching tight ends and linebackers before landing with Taylor in Cincinnati in 2020.

How Golden became the fit in Cincinnati

Golden had more connections to Taylor and the Bengals than any candidate and it wasn’t close. Golden truly never left Cincinnati. When he coached linebackers in 2020-21 he bought a house on the same street as Taylor. They were neighbors, and his three children were in Cincinnati high schools. Golden took the job in South Bend after the Super Bowl, but he didn’t sell his house or move his family. He stayed neighbors and close friends with Taylor despite spending most of his time in-season at Notre Dame. Once he started excelling for the Irish and illustrating a unique ability to motivate and teach young players the match started to make as much sense for the Bengals as it did for Golden not having to drive to and from South Bend anymore.

Beyond that, knowledge of the unique structure of the Bengals’ organization is critical considering how involved the defensive coordinator will be in evaluating and drafting players. The Bengals ask their coaches to stay involved in the draft and free agency more than any team in the NFL. The family ownership creates another unique balance for all core members of the coaching staff. Plus, Taylor focuses mostly on the offensive side of the ball, leaving the defensive coordinator to essentially serve as head coach on the other side of the ball, largely with free reign. Golden arrives well aware of it all.

This also falls in line with a successful move made last year by one of Taylor’s closest coaching friends, Matt LaFleur. The Packers coach made a move at defensive coordinator and plucked Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley from the college ranks. The Packers jumped from 22nd in points allowed per drive in 2023 to sixth this past season.

With the Bengals expected to lean heavily into their youth movement on defense, the idea of a coach with a background in college had advantages against those with histories predominantly in the NFL. Even more so to add a fresh voice, but also one where both sides know exactly what they are getting into. — Paul Dehner Jr., Bengals beat writer

Who the Bengals are adding as a defensive line coach

Jerry Montgomery, 45, will take over as defensive line coach after one year in New England. He will be entering his 20th season coaching the defensive line between the college and pro game. Montgomery bounced around major college programs before landing with the Green Bay Packers in 2015. He spent nine seasons in Green Bay, working his way up from a defensive line assistant to defensive line coach and run game coordinator before leaving prior to last season. Montgomery took a job as the Patriots’ defensive line coach, but that proved to be short lived in the first season under Jerod Mayo, who was fired and replaced by Mike Vrabel.

This marks an interesting addition to the Bengals’ staff along with offensive line coach Scott Peters and his assistant Michael McCarthy, who also come from the Patriots’ staff. Both sides of the New England trenches will move to Cincinnati as they try to revitalized a struggling area of their roster.

His task will be front and center developing a defensive line that struggled mightily in 2024, seeing regression from a collection of high draft picks and minimal production from every veteran not named Trey Hendrickson. Zac Taylor fired defensive line coach Marion Hobby as part of the defensive overhaul. — Dehner Jr.

How Golden’s departure impacts Notre Dame

Golden’s departure for Cincinnati had been bubbling around Notre Dame for the past few weeks, even during the program’s run to the national championship. Even through three seasons in South Bend, Ind., Cincinnati was still considered Golden’s home base. And as much as Notre Dame has compensated Golden at the top of the college market, a chance to return to the NFL offers the next challenge in a career that’s ridden the wave from being an up-and-coming coach to off the grid to back to being one of the smartest minds in football.

Notre Dame’s defense has been outstanding under Golden, finishing No. 1 nationally in pass-efficiency defense each of the past two seasons. But this third year has been Golden’s master class, as he’s had to build the Irish’s defense on the fly while losing half his starting lineup for long stretches, including All-American cornerback Benjamin Morrison and defensive tackle Rylie Mills. Golden has figured out how to not only get performances out of journeyman veterans (i.e. free agents) but also freshmen (i.e. rookies). On the surface, who’s in the lineup seems to matter less than the system the roster has been coaching up to play.

If the past three years were an audition to return to the NFL, this time as a defensive coordinator, it’s hard to imagine Golden knocking out his lines any better than this. Golden was Marcus Freeman’s first big hire after Freeman’s promotion as Notre Dame’s head coach three years ago. It’s easy to argue that Golden was also Freeman’s best decision.

Defensive backs coach Mike Mickens will get a look in following Golden, but there’s a good chance Freeman looks outside the staff at coordinator considering the prestige of the job. Notre Dame’s past four defensive coordinators have been Power 4 head coaches or, in Golden’s case, an NFL defensive coordinator. It makes the post a potential career launching pad for whoever fills it next. — Pete Sampson, Notre Dame beat writer

According to sources close to the team, the Cincinnati Bengals are expected to hire Notre Dame’s Al Golden as their new defensive coordinator. Golden, who has a wealth of experience coaching at both the collegiate and professional levels, is seen as a strong leader who can help revamp the Bengals’ struggling defense.

With Golden at the helm, the Bengals are hoping to see a significant improvement on the defensive side of the ball next season. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops. #CincinnatiBengals #AlGolden #DefensiveCoordinator #NFL

  • Bengals hiring Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden as new DC

This will be Golden’s first job as an NFL coordinator. He spent two seasons on head coach Zac Taylor’s staff in Cincinnati, as a linebackers coach in 2020 and 2021 prior to taking the Notre Dame job in 2022. Before that, he spent time on both sides of the ball (linebackers and tight ends) as an assistant coach with the Detroit Lions, from 2016 to 2019.

Golden was also the head coach at Temple (2006-2010) and Miami (2011-15), after working his way up as a college assistant since the mid-1990s at various stops.

The Bengals missed the playoffs at 9-8, in spite of a late-season run. The defense, which was a major problem much of the 2024 season, ranked 25th in both yards and points allowed. That unit also had a poor showing in 2023, leading to a change.

With Golden on staff in 2020 and 2021, the Bengals enjoyed their best defensive success — and team success — in the Taylor era. They reached Super Bowl LVI in 2020 and the AFC Championship Game in 2021, when they finished with the sixth-fewest points allowed.

The Cincinnati Bengals have made a bold move in hiring Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden as their new defensive coordinator. Golden brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role, having previously served as head coach at Miami and Temple.

Golden is known for his innovative defensive schemes and his ability to develop young talent. His track record of success at the college level bodes well for the Bengals as they look to improve their defense and compete for a playoff spot.

Fans are excited to see what Golden can bring to the team and how he can help elevate the Bengals defense to the next level. With his leadership and expertise, the Bengals are poised to make waves in the NFL next season.

  • Al Golden set to return to Bengals as defensive coordinator

Al Golden is headed back to Cincinnati.

After three seasons as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator, multiple reports indicate Golden is finalizing a deal to return to the Bengals as defensive coordinator. Pete Thamel of ESPN noted Golden has informed Notre Dame officials of his decision.

Golden was Cincinnati’s linebackers coach under head coach Zac Taylor from 2020-2021, helping the club reach Super Bowl LVI in the latter season.

After stints as a college head coach at Temple and Miami from 2006-2015, Golden was Detroit’s tight ends coach from 2016-2017 and linebackers coach from 2018-2019.

The Bengals fired Lou Anarumo as defensive coordinator after the end of the regular season.

After a brief hiatus from the NFL, Al Golden is set to return to the Cincinnati Bengals as their new defensive coordinator. The announcement was made earlier today, much to the excitement of Bengals fans who remember Golden’s previous success with the team.

Golden previously served as the linebackers coach for the Bengals from 2018 to 2020 before leaving to pursue other opportunities. During his time with the team, he helped develop and mentor some of the top defensive talent in the league.

Known for his strategic mind and ability to get the best out of his players, Golden is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the Bengals’ defense and help take the team to the next level. With his experience and expertise, the Bengals are hopeful that Golden can help lead their defense to new heights in the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates on Al Golden’s return to the Bengals as defensive coordinator and what it means for the team’s future. #Bengals #AlGolden #DefensiveCoordinator

  • Al Golden leaving Notre Dame to become Bengals defensive coordinator, per report

The Cincinnati Bengals have found their next defensive coordinator, and it will be Notre Dame assistant Al Golden.

Following the Fighting Irish’s loss to Ohio State in the national championship, Golden is leaving Notre Dame to become the Bengals’ next defensive coordinator.

The news was first broken by Tom Pelissero.

Golden, who’s made numerous NFL and college stops, first became a defensive coordinator for the Virginia Cavaliers from 2001-2005 before being named the head coach at Temple (2006-2010), then led the Miami Hurricanes (2011-2015) before being let go. That’s when Golden broke into the NFL, first coaching tight ends for the Detroit Lions (2016-17), then became the team’s linebackers coach (2018-19).

Golden would become the Bengals linebackers coach in 2019 as part of Zac Taylor’s first coaching staff. That was a role Golden served in for three seasons, culminating in the Bengals’ Super Bowl run in the 2021 season before being named the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame.

During his time in Cincinnati, Golden helped Germaine Pratt and Logan Wilson develop into one of the NFL’s best linebacker duos. That tandem was instrumental in the Bengals’ miraculous playoff run in 2021, but they’ve regressed since Golden left town and was replaced with James Bettcher, who was fired this offseason.

With the hire made, what are your thoughts on Bengals defensive coordinator Al Golden? Let us know in the comments section!

According to recent reports, Al Golden is set to leave his position at Notre Dame to join the Cincinnati Bengals as their new defensive coordinator. Golden, who has served as the linebackers coach for the Fighting Irish since 2020, is expected to bring his expertise and leadership to the Bengals’ defense.

Fans of both Notre Dame and the Bengals are sure to have mixed feelings about this news, as Golden has been a valuable asset to the Fighting Irish and will now be taking on a new challenge in the NFL. However, his experience and knowledge of the game make him a strong candidate for the position with the Bengals.

It will be interesting to see how Golden’s coaching style and strategies translate to the professional level, and how he will help improve the Bengals’ defense in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Bengals hire Notre Dame Al Golden as defensive coordinator

Notre Dame football’s outstanding defensive coordinator has earned a promotion to coach in the professional ranks. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the Cincinnati Bengals are set to hire Al Golden for the same position.

The 55-year Golden, a Colts Neck, N.J., native, just completed his third season with the Fighting Irish. He will rejoin head coach Zac Taylor’s staff in Cincinnati, where he served as the linebackers coach from 2020-21. The Bengals reached the Super Bowl during the 2021 season. He joined the Irish in 2022, coach Marcus Freeman’s first as head coach.

Golden directed the Notre Dame defense to three remarkable seasons. Under his tutelage, they were top-25 in total defense every year. The Irish were also in the top 10 in scoring defense in the last two seasons. Last month, the Broyles Award — presented annually to college football’s top assistant coach —named Golden one of five finalists.

When Golden took over the Irish in 2022, it was the first time he had been a defensive coordinator since his days at Virginia from 2001-05. He became Temple’s head coach from 2006-10 and Miami from 2011-15. Before his time with the Bengals, Golden was the Detroit Lions tight ends coach from 2016-17 and the linebackers coach from 2018-19.

He also coaches linebackers at Boston College (1997-99) and Penn State (2000), where he graduated in 1991. He started coaching at Red Bank (N.J.) Red Bank Catholic as an offensive coordinator in 1993. After that season, he had his first stint in Virginia as a graduate student from 1994-96.

Who will Notre Dame hire as defensive coordinator?

With Golden off to Cincinnati, Freeman will have to appoint a new coordinator to his staff for the fifth time. Four of those hires involved coaches who had previous ties to Freeman.

After the 2022 season, he had to fill vacancies left by offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and special teams coordinator Brian Mason. Freeman promoted tight ends coach Gerad Parker to offensive coordinator and tapped Ole Miss special teams coordinator Marty Biagi to lead Notre Dame’s unit. Biagi was a special teams analyst with the Irish in 2016. Mason replaced former Irish special teams coordinator Brian Polian, who followed Brian Kelly to LSU after 2021.

When Parker — who coached with Freeman at Purdue from 2013-16 — left Notre Dame after the 2023 season to become the head coach at Troy, Freeman snagged LSU offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock. Freeman worked with Denbrock at the University of Cincinnati from 2017-20. Mason was also on the Bearcats’ staff.

Golden’s departure marks the program’s fifth defensive coordinator search since 2017.

The Cincinnati Bengals have made a major coaching move by bringing in former Notre Dame assistant coach Al Golden as their new defensive coordinator.

Golden, who has a wealth of coaching experience at both the college and professional level, will be tasked with turning around a Bengals defense that struggled at times during the 2021 season.

During his time at Notre Dame, Golden helped lead the Fighting Irish to a top-10 ranking in total defense, showcasing his ability to develop and implement successful defensive schemes.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor expressed his excitement about bringing Golden on board, stating, “Al is a proven leader and defensive mind who will bring a fresh perspective to our defense. We are confident that his experience and expertise will help us take our defense to the next level.”

With a new defensive coordinator in place, the Bengals are hoping to build upon their successful 2021 season and make a deep playoff run in 2022. Bengals fans can look forward to seeing Golden’s impact on the team’s defense as they gear up for the upcoming season.

The Cincinnati Bengals are hiring Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden as their defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports.

Golden will replace Lou Anarumo, whom the Bengals fired at the conclusion of their season. The Colts hired Anarumo as their defensive coordinator on Monday.

News of Golden’s move to Cincinnati arrives two days after Notre Dame played in and lost to Ohio State in Monday’s CFP National Championship Game. Golden was Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator from 2022-24.

Golden returns to the Bengals, with whom he worked as linebackers coach from 2020-21 under Zac Taylor. Taylor has been Cincinnati’s head coach since 2019. Anarumo was the defensive coordinator during Golden’s stint as linebackers coach.

A former linebacker at Penn State and for a single season with the New England Patriots, Golden has prior NFL coaching experience as the linebackers (2018-19) and tight ends coach (2016-17) for the Detroit Lions. Golden was previously the head coach at the University of Miami from 2011-15 and at Temple from 2006-10.

The Cincinnati Bengals have made a major move in their coaching staff, hiring Al Golden as their new defensive coordinator. Golden, who most recently served as the defensive coordinator for Notre Dame, brings a wealth of experience to the Bengals.

Prior to his time at Notre Dame, Golden was the head coach at the University of Miami, where he led the Hurricanes to a 32-25 record over five seasons. He also has previous coaching experience in the NFL, having served as the linebackers coach for the Detroit Lions in 2000.

Golden’s defensive expertise will be a valuable asset for the Bengals as they look to improve on that side of the ball next season. With his track record of success at both the college and professional levels, Bengals fans can expect big things from their defense under Golden’s guidance.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Bengals’ coaching staff as they continue to make moves in preparation for the upcoming season.

  • Bengals hiring Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden for same job in Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator job has been open for more than two weeks now, but there hasn’t been much movement on a possible hiring and now we know why: The team was waiting for Notre Dame to finish its season. Cincinnati is hiring Fighting Irish defensive coordinator Al Golden, CBS Sports/247Sports national college football reporter Matt Zenitz reports

Bengals coach Zac Taylor is extremely familiar with Golden, who served as the Bengals linebackers coach for two seasons (2020-21) before taking the defensive coordinator job at Notre Dame. Taylor’s defensive coordinator job came open on Jan. 6 when Taylor made the decision to fire Lou Anarumo. In the 16 days since then, the Bengals had only conducted two known interviews and both of those came in the first 48 hours of their search. The first one came on Jan. 7 with former Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and the second one came on Jan. 8 with Patriots defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington.

After the Covington interview, the search went quiet, which led to a lot of speculation that the Bengals were waiting on their ideal candidate to become available, and as it turns out, that was the case. With Notre Dame playing in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, Golden wasn’t going to be available for a possible interview with the Bengals until after the game, which the Fighting Irish ended up losing to Ohio State, 34-23.

Golden was actually asked about the Bengals job on Jan. 18, but he didn’t have much to say.

“It’s humbling that your name is mentioned because of team success. But, not the time or place,” Golden said, via Fox 19

During the 2024 season, Notre Dame surrendered just 14.3 points per game, which ranked second in the nation. The Fighting Irish also ranked in the top 10 in total yards surrendered, giving up an average of just 298.3 yards per game.

The 55-year-old Golden left the Bengals for Notre Dame after Cincinnati’s Super Bowl LVI loss, and now, he’s going to leave the Fighting Irish to head back to Cincinnati after a tough championship game loss with Notre Dame.

Golden brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Bengals’ coaching staff, having previously served as the head coach at Temple and Miami.

With Golden at the helm of the defense, Bengals fans can expect a renewed focus on fundamentals, discipline, and accountability. His leadership and strategic prowess will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the team’s performance on the field.

Golden’s proven track record of developing talented players and creating a strong defensive unit makes him a valuable addition to the Bengals organization. Fans can look forward to seeing his impact on the team as they strive for success in the upcoming season.

Welcome to Cincinnati, Coach Golden! Bengals fans are excited to see what you will bring to the team. #WhoDey
