Miami Hurricanes part ways with defensive coordinator Lance Guidry

MIAMI – After a challenging season for the Miami Hurricanes’ defense, head coach Mario Cristobal announced Tuesday that Lance Guidry has been relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator.

The Hurricanes struggled defensively throughout the 2024 season, allowing an average of 23.9 points per game, which ranked 60th nationally. Within the conference, Miami gave up 30.8 points per game, placing them 14th.

Big plays were a recurring issue, with the Hurricanes surrendering nine plays of 50 yards or more. Additionally, opponents scored touchdowns on 62.9 percent of their trips to the red zone.

Tackling was another area of concern, as Miami ranked 99th nationally in tackling efficiency, according to Pro Football Focus.

In announcing the decision, Cristobal expressed gratitude for Guidry’s time with the program while emphasizing the need for improvement.

“I want to first thank Coach Guidry for his contributions to the University of Miami,” Cristobal said in a statement. “In a continuous effort to always improve all aspects of our program, I have decided to make a change on defense. We will move forward and make decisions that provide our players, staff and program the best opportunity to win and develop at the highest level.”

The Hurricanes are expected to begin the search for a new defensive coordinator immediately as they look to strengthen their program ahead of the 2025 season.

Head coach Manny Diaz expressed his gratitude for Guidry’s efforts, but ultimately felt that a change was necessary in order to improve the team’s performance next season.

The search for a new defensive coordinator will begin immediately, as the Hurricanes look to turn things around and compete at a higher level in the ACC. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

NC State reportedly set to hire D.J. Eliot as next defensive coordinator

According to multiple sources, NC State is set to hire D.J. Eliot as their next defensive coordinator. Eliot, who previously served as the defensive coordinator at Colorado, will be tasked with revamping a Wolfpack defense that struggled at times during the 2021 season.

Eliot brings a wealth of experience to the position, having also served as the defensive coordinator at Kentucky and Florida State. He is known for his aggressive and innovative defensive schemes, and has a track record of developing players at every level of the defense.

Fans are hopeful that Eliot’s hiring will bring a new energy and effectiveness to the NC State defense, which has been a point of concern in recent years. With his proven track record and expertise, Eliot could be the missing piece that helps elevate the Wolfpack to the next level.

Sources: Eliot expected to be NC State defensive coordinator

North Carolina State is expected to hire D.J. Eliot as the school’s new defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Mondya night. Eliot has previously held the same title at Colorado, Kentucky, Kansas and Temple.

He was most recently a linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 and served as a consultant to Baylor last season. He has a significant background in simulated pressures as a scheme specialty.

Eliot, 48, also worked as an assistant at Florida State under Jimbo Fisher from 2010-12, which gives him ACC experience, and knowledge of the league, albeit in a former format.

The hire adds another change to NC State’s staff for next season. Earlier in the day, and less than 48 hours after the season ended, NC State fired offensive coordinator Robert Anae and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper. Also, Gavin Locklear was named tight ends coach on that side of the ball.

The Wolfpack just wrapped up a disappointing 6-7 season that featured a 26-21 loss to East Carolina Saturday in the Go Bowling Military Bowl. In the final minute of that loss, members of the Pirates and Wolfpack got into a brawl that did not put the program in the best light.

The players began brawling in the final minute of East Carolina’s 26-21 victory in the Go Bowling Military Bowl on Saturday night, and the teams won’t have to wait long to see each other again. They face off to open next season.

“I’m embarrassed as a coach,” NC State coach Dave Doeren said after the loss. “I know our players are too. That is not how people of this program, the players of this program, staff of this program, want anything to do with something like that. To me, it was a terrible response to something that happened to one of our players, and there’s no excuses for it. So I apologize to ECU and their team for the way we responded.”

East Carolina and NC State will open next season against each other, on Aug. 30.\

According to multiple sources, former Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is expected to join NC State as their new defensive coordinator. Grantham will replace Tony Gibson, who left the Wolfpack to join Auburn’s coaching staff. Grantham brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the defensive coordinator at Georgia, Louisville, and Mississippi State. NC State fans are hopeful that Grantham can help improve the team’s defense and lead them to success in the upcoming season.

Indiana Football Announces Chandler Whitmer as New QB Coach, Co-Offensive Coordinator

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana football officially announced Monday it has hired Chandler Whitmer as its new quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator.

Whitmer replaces Tino Sunseri, who was Indiana’s quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator in 2024. Sunseri left Indiana after its College Football Playoff loss to become the offensive coordinator at UCLA.

Whitmer joins Indiana after being the Atlanta Falcons pass-game specialist in 2024. He also has coaching experience with the Los Angeles Chargers, Clemson, Ohio State and Yale. Whitmer played quarterback for UConn, Butler Community College and Illinois.

“Chandler came very highly recommended and has been involved with the development of a number of top-flight quarterbacks,” Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said in a news release. “We’re excited he’s joining the organization, and he will do a terrific job developing our quarterbacks.”

As the Falcons’ pass-game specialist in 2024, Whitmer worked closely with former Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. His previous stint came as an offensive quality control coach with the Los Angeles Chargers from 2021-23, working primarily with the quarterbacks.

“I am fired up to join Coach Cignetti, Coach Shanahan, and the Hoosiers program,” Whitmer said in a news release. “What they did this past season in such a short amount of time was tremendous and the future is incredibly bright. I am excited to learn from everyone, bring some things from my experiences, and develop the quarterback position.”

During Whitmer’s time with the Chargers, quarterback Justin Herbert set NFL records for the most completions (1,316), passing yards (14,089) and total touchdowns (102) in the first three seasons of any player’s career.

Prior to joining the NFL, Whitmer was an offensive graduate assistant at Clemson in 2020 and at Ohio State in 2019. He reached the College Football Playoff both seasons, helping to develop future first-round NFL Draft pick quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields. He began his coaching career as an offensive quality control coach at Yale.

Whitmer played at UConn from 2012-14, following one season with Butler Community College and his freshman season at Illinois. In three seasons with the Huskies, Whitmer played 28 games and completed 56.5% of his passes for 5,082 yards, 25 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.

Now with the Hoosiers, Whitmer will be working with a largely new quarterback room. Starter Kurtis Rourke graduated after finishing ninth in Heisman Trophy voting, and backup Tayven Jackson entered the transfer portal.

Indiana added Cal transfer quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who joins his brother, Alberto, and Tyler Cherry, who were true freshmen in 2024. Indiana also recently landed high school class of 2025 quarterback Jacob Bell.

The Indiana Hoosiers football team has announced the hiring of Chandler Whitmer as their new quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator. Whitmer, a former college quarterback himself, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the coaching staff.

Whitmer played quarterback at UConn and Western Kentucky, where he excelled on the field and earned multiple accolades for his performance. After his playing career, Whitmer transitioned into coaching, working with quarterbacks at various levels of the game.

Head coach Tom Allen expressed his excitement about adding Whitmer to the coaching staff, stating, “Chandler brings a unique perspective and a strong skill set to our team. His experience as a quarterback and his ability to develop players will be invaluable as we continue to build our program.”

Whitmer will work closely with the quarterbacks on the team, helping them improve their skills and develop as players. He will also play a key role in the offensive game planning and strategy, working alongside the other members of the coaching staff.

Fans of the Hoosiers are eager to see how Whitmer’s expertise will impact the team on the field. With his guidance, the quarterbacks are sure to take their game to the next level, and the offense as a whole is poised to make significant strides in the upcoming season.

NC State coach Dave Doeren is replacing offensive coordinator Robert Anae following the 26-21 loss to East Carolina.

NC State coach Dave Doeren is replacing offensive coordinator Robert Anae following the 26-21 loss to East Carolina in the Military Bowl on Saturday.

Anae, who also coached the tight ends and slot receivers, will be replaced by quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper.

Roper, who is in his sixth year at NC State, will remain coaching quarterbacks.

NC State alum Gavin Locklear, who has served as an offensive quality control coach on the Wolfpack staff, has been named tight ends coach.

“I want to thank Robert and wish him and his family the best,” said Doeren. “I have great respect for him and appreciate the work he has done.”

A 30-year coaching veteran, Roper has served as an offensive coordinator for two SEC programs and another in the ACC. He has coached the Wolfpack quarterbacks in the past two seasons and the 2019 season. He led the running backs from 2020 to 22.

“Kurt has done a great job for us and knows what we need to do to take the next step forward as a program,” said Doeren. “He has a great relationship with our players, a great knowledge of college football and the ACC, and I’m looking forward to seeing him as a play caller.”

Roper had been an interim offensive coordinator for last year’s bowl game against Kansas State.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity and appreciate Coach Doeren’s faith in me,” said Roper. “My family and I love NC State, and I’m excited about the future.”

Under Roper’s tutelage, freshman quarterback C.J. Bailey had the second-highest yardage total ever by a Wolfpack freshman in 2024 (2,413), while his 17 touchdown passes also rank second ever for an NC State rookie. Bailey’s 144.0 passing efficiency mark this past season ranks the best for a freshman and seventh-best in school history, regardless of class.

Roper spent 15 years coaching in the SEC. He began his career as a graduate assistant at Tennessee (1996-98) and then coached the quarterbacks at Ole Miss from 1999-2004 under coach David Cutcliffe. He then spent the 2005 season coaching the same position at Kentucky and returned to UT from 2006-07 to coach the running backs.

In 2008, he rejoined Cutcliffe at Duke, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach until 2013 before serving in that same position at Florida in 2014.

After spending the 2015 season as a senior offensive assistant with the Cleveland Browns, Roper went to South Carolina, where he was co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for two years before heading to Colorado.

Roper tutored All-America signal-caller Eli Manning, the 2003 SEC Player of the Year and the No. 1 overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft, during his six years as the quarterbacks coach at Ole Miss. After winning the Maxwell and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Awards in 2003, Manning went on to win two Super Bowls, was twice named the Super Bowl MVP, and was a four-time Pro Bowl selection.

Another one of his quarterbacks, Thaddeus Lewis, spent six years in the NFL after a record-breaking career in Roper’s offense at Duke. Lewis finished his career as Duke’s all-time leader in pass attempts, pass completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. He joined the Wolfpack’s Philip Rivers as just the second player in ACC history to throw for over 10,000 yards.

In Roper’s last year at Duke, the Blue Devils enjoyed a record-setting campaign, winning a program-best 10 games and capturing the ACC’s Coastal Division championship. His offense set the school record for total touchdowns (60) and became the first squad in Blue Devil history to post 20+ rushing and 20-plus passing touchdowns in the same season.

Locklear originally walked on for the Wolfpack but was awarded a scholarship before the 2016 campaign. He ended up playing in 38 career contests as a wide receiver. After returning from a major leg injury, he earned the program’s Ken McNeill Iron Wolf Award.

“Gavin has been a positive addition to our program since the first day he walked on and has done a great job on our staff,” said Doeren.” I love being able to give former players the opportunity to work at their alma mater and am looking forward to watching his career continue with the Wolfpack.”

The Apex native graduated from NC State with a degree in sports management in 2017 and served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Wolfpack in 2018 before taking on a role as a graduate assistant in 2019. After serving as a graduate assistant, he joined NC State as an offensive quality control coach.

“I am very grateful to Coach Doeren and Coach Roper for giving me this opportunity to coach for the university that I love,” said Locklear.

NC State coach Dave Doeren is replacing offensive coordinator Robert Anae following the 26-21 loss to East Carolina.

After a disappointing performance in the Wolfpack’s loss to East Carolina, head coach Dave Doeren has decided to make a change on the offensive side of the ball. Offensive coordinator Robert Anae will be replaced as the team looks to shake things up and spark some much-needed momentum.

Doeren expressed his disappointment with the team’s offensive struggles, particularly in the red zone, during the loss to East Carolina. He believes a change in leadership is necessary to get the offense back on track and put the team in a position to succeed moving forward.

Anae, who has been with the program for several years, will be reassigned within the coaching staff. In his place, Doeren has named assistant coach John Smith as the interim offensive coordinator for the remainder of the season.

Fans are hopeful that this change will bring about positive results and help the Wolfpack turn things around as they continue their quest for a successful season. Stay tuned for updates as the team prepares for their next matchup.

West Virginia to hire Oklahoma’s Zac Alley as defensive coordinator

West Virginia is set to hire Zac Alley as its next defensive coordinator, On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed. He spent this season at Oklahoma after previously working with new WVU coach Rich Rodriguez at Jacksonville State.

Alley spent two years under Rodriguez with the Gamecocks before making his way to Norman this year. The Sooners ranked No. 5 in the SEC in total defense in their first year in the league, and their 115.08 rush yards allowed also ranked Top-5 in the league.

As Rodriguez makes his return to West Virginia, Alley’s name came up as a potential target for defensive coordinator. He addressed that speculation on Friday after OU’s bowl game loss to Navy and indicated he was coming back.

“Every year, there’s going to be something that comes up with jobs and whatnot,” Alley said. “Man, but I’m just excited about our team. I think coming back next season, we’re going to have a great opportunity to be successful, be a top defense in the country, and hopefully we got some young guys who can come along to help us do that.”

This story will be updated.

West Virginia University has announced the hiring of Zac Alley, former defensive coordinator at the University of Oklahoma, to lead their defense for the upcoming football season.

Alley comes with a wealth of experience and success, having coached at a high level in the Big 12 conference. His defensive schemes and strategies have been highly effective in shutting down some of the top offenses in college football.

West Virginia head coach, Neal Brown, expressed his excitement about bringing Alley on board, stating that he is confident in Alley’s ability to elevate the team’s defense to new heights.

Fans are eager to see how Alley’s defensive expertise will impact the Mountaineers’ performance on the field. With his track record of success, there is optimism that West Virginia’s defense will become a force to be reckoned with under Alley’s leadership.

West Virginia Set to Hire Zac Alley as Defensive Coordinator

West Virginia’s search for a defensive coordinator has come to an end. Rich Rodriguez is set to bring on Zac Alley as the Mountaineers’ new leader on the defensive side of the ball, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Alley, 30, is the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Oklahoma. Before reuniting with Brent Venables in Norman, Alley spent two years as the coordinator on Rodriguez’s staff at Jacksonville State. The two also spent the 2021 season together on Terry Bowden’s staff at UL Monroe where he was the youngest coordinator (27) at the FBS level.

In his two years at Jax State, Alley’s unit finished 33rd in scoring defense and 43rd in total defense. The Gamecocks were stout against the run, allowing just 2.8 yards per carry while causing a ton of havoc by creating 25 turnovers (16 interceptions) and a 13th-place finish nationally in sacks per game (2.9).

That success has carried over into his new post at Oklahoma in his first year on the job. The Sooners have seen drastic improvements in the four key defensive statistical categories, as shown below.

Oklahoma’s Defense

2023 (Before Alley)

2024 (With Alley)

Total Defense

389.7 (60th)

324.4 (20th)

Pass Defense

250.8 (100th)

218.6 (63rd)

Rush Defense

138.9 (42nd)

105.7 (11th)

Scoring Defense

23.5 (41st)

22.3 (31st)

Alley ran a lot of odd stack at Jacksonville State but mixed in a good dose of four-man configurations to keep the offense off-balance. During his one year at Oklahoma, he adapted to Venables’ 4-2-5 scheme but did implement some three-man looks, which helped the Sooners’ defense considerably.

He’s a perfect fit for what Rodriguez wants in his defensive play-caller – someone who is aggressive and prioritizes creating takeaways. On third downs, he tends to put a lot of faith in his secondary and bring a lot of pressure to overwhelm the offensive line and force the quarterback to rush his progressions.

With Alley at the helm, West Virginia is poised to take their defense to the next level and compete at the highest level in the Big 12 conference. Fans can expect an aggressive, disciplined defense that will be a force to be reckoned with on the field.

Report: WVU finalizing deal to make Oklahoma’s Alley defensive coordinator

West Virginia is finalizing a deal to make Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Zac Alley their defensive coordinator according to report.

Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that West Virginia was in the process of finalizing a three-year deal to take over the defensive coordinator spot in Morgantown.

Alley had been the key target of the search.

Alley was hired by the Sooners in January of 2024 but spent the two seasons before that working under Rodriguez as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Jacksonville State. Those ties made him an immediate candidate for the position and his addition gives Rodriguez a strong building block for his initial coaching staff in his return to Morgantown.

Alley had signed a three-year contract with the Sooners which had a base pay of $850,000 this past season and was set to see $50,000 raises in 2025 and 2026. That was a significant jump from the $213,800 that he was under contract for in his final season at Jacksonville State.

That signals a significant investment from West Virginia on the defensive side of the ball.

As the play caller on defense, Oklahoma was ranked 21st in total defense this past season allowing 318.2 yards per game and was tied for 18th in yards per play allowed at just 4.87. The Sooners were ranked 34th in scoring defense permitting just 21.58 points per contest.

During his time at Jacksonville State, Alley’s defense ranked 33rd in scoring defense at 21.2 points per game and 43rd in total defense helping to lead the Gamecocks to a 9-4 overall record in 2023. His unit had success in holding opponents to 2.8 yards per rush, or fourth nationally, was ranked eighth in tackles for loss with 414 and ninth in turnovers gained with 25.

The 2023 Gamecocks defense also held opponents to just 4.8 yards per play, good for 12th nationally and was able to get off the field on third down ranking 22nd in conversion percentage at 32.7.

The 2022 unit led the nation at the FCS level with 15 fumble recoveries and was 11th in red zone defense. The Gamecocks gave up 21 points or fewer in seven of 11 games.

Prior to his arrival at Jacksonville State, Alley was the youngest defensive coordinator in the country at Louisiana-Monroe and improved in every statistical category on defense from the previous season.

Alley also previously served as the co-special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Boise State as well as a defensive coaching internship with the Carolina Panthers where he assisted with the linebackers. He got his start as a student assistant at Clemson in 2011 and spent four years in that role working under Brent Venables and graduated from the school.

WVSports.com will have more on Alley in the near future.

According to reports, West Virginia University is finalizing a deal to make Oklahoma’s Brian Odom their new defensive coordinator. Odom has served as the inside linebackers coach for the Sooners for the past three seasons and is known for his aggressive defensive schemes.

This move comes after former WVU defensive coordinator Vic Koenning resigned amid allegations of mistreatment of players. The Mountaineers are hoping that Odom can bring a fresh perspective to their defense and help them improve on their 5-7 record from last season.

Odom is highly regarded in the coaching world and has a proven track record of developing talented defensive players. His hiring would be a big win for WVU as they look to rebuild their defense and compete in the tough Big 12 conference.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
