  • Former Bears coach Matt Eberflus returning to Cowboys as defensive coordinator


    FRISCO, Texas — The Cowboys hired former Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator Tuesday for his second stint on the Dallas staff.

    Eberflus returned to the Cowboys two months after the Bears fired him 12 games into his third season, just a day after he botched a timeout against Detroit late in a sixth consecutive loss. He was 14-32 with Chicago.

    The Bears hired Eberflus after his four-year stint as defensive coordinator in Indianapolis. He had spent the previous seven seasons as a linebackers coach with the Cowboys, who eventually added passing game coordinator duties.

    Eberflus is joining the staff of coach Brian Schottenheimer, who was hired last week to replace Mike McCarthy. Schottenheimer is planning to call the offensive plays.

    The 54-year-old Eberflus spent 17 years as a college assistant before joining the Cleveland Browns as a linebackers coach in 2009.

Eberflus’ dismissal dropped the curtain on a tenure that offered some glimpses of potential, especially on the defensive side, but ultimately was too disorganized to justify continuing.

    Eberflus heads south to the Cowboys to take over for Mike Zimmer, who left the Cowboys after Dallas passed over him in their head coaching search, choosing offensive assistant Brian Schottenheimer over the veteran coach who oversaw the Vikings for eight seasons. Eberflus will arrive to a team headlined by All-Pro rusher Micah Parsons, with the likes of Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland and DeMarvion Overshown also existing as either proven or ascending talents.

Their staff is still very much in the process of being built.

Rams TE coach pass game coordinator Nick Caley was reportedly the early favorite, and Raiders offensive coordinator Scott Turner was also reportedly in the mix. He returned to the Raiders as a senior offensive assistant after that. Following his stint with Campbell in ’22, Morton has been with Payton and the Broncos the past two seasons.

    After a stunning Divisional Round loss to the Washington Commanders, Campbell and the Lions lost both their coordinators — Johnson to the Bears and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets.

    They’ve moved just as quickly, though, promoting Kelvin Sheppard to DC and hiring Morton to take on the offensive reins.

  • Dallas Cowboys hiring Nick Sorensen as special teams coordinator


    The Dallas Cowboys introduced Brian Schottenheimer as the 10th head coach in franchise history on Monday and before day’s end his first coordinator was reported.

    Schottenheimer’s staff will have Nick Sorensen serving as the special teams coordinator.

    The post from Tom Pelissero notes that Sorensen served as the special teams coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. Brian Schottenheimer spent that season as the Jaguars’ passing game coordinator so that is their most recent crossover with one another as Schotty joined the Cowboys staff the next year.

    It should be noted that Jacksonville finished 31st in special teams DVOA in 2021.

    Most of Sorensen’s career to date has been spent working on the defensive side of the ball which will make this a bit of an adjustment for the special teams group as they were recently coached by John Fassel who left for the same role with the Tennessee Titans. Bones was a special teams wizard with a wealth of knowledge on that side of the ball. That isn’t to say that Sorensen can’t succeed or thrive, just that this is a bit of new.
