  • Three Countries Officially Quit Major West African ECOWAS Alliance

Three military-ruled countries have officially withdrawn from the West African regional alliance known as ECOWAS, the bloc said on Wednesday, defying pressure from the group to return the countries to civilian democratic rule.

The alliance, the Economic Community of West African States, offers its members visa-free travel, favorable trade tariffs and access to a $702 billion market for the region’s 400 million people. The three nations — Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger — announced their intention to leave last year.

Negotiations between their leaders and the bloc then failed to reach an agreement that would keep them in. Instead, the three juntas are forging ahead with their own grouping, the Alliance of Sahelian States, A.E.S. by its French acronym, and have created a military force of 5,000 troops.

The three juntas presented their exit as essential for their sovereignty and portrayed the alliance as a neocolonialist force carrying out a foreign agenda.

“ECOWAS and the jihadists are the same,” Assimi Goïta, Mali’s president, said on Jan. 10, referring to the extremists who have destabilized a vast area of the Sahel, the arid belt that stretches coast to coast below the Sahara. “The only difference is that some carry weapons and others do not.”

Their withdrawal will weaken ECOWAS, which celebrates its 50th year this May and had 16 members at its founding. It will now have only 12: Mauritania left in 2000. Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, though not the most populous or economically strong countries in the region, account for more than half the alliance’s 1.9 million square miles and 17 percent of its 400 million population.

The alliance said in a statement that it would leave the doors open for the juntas to return.

But analysts say that the three exiting countries stand to suffer the most, including through higher prices, shortages of food supplies and political isolation.

Niger shares a 1,000-mile border with Nigeria and relies on its much richer and populous neighbor for 80 percent of its trade. Relations have become strained in recent months: Niger has accused Nigeria, whose president is the current chair of ECOWAS, of supporting jihadist groups to attack it.

Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso account for half of the world’s terrorism-related deaths, and the region overtook the Middle East last year to become the global epicenter of terrorism, according to a recent report by Global Terrorism Index. Some of the military juntas used the insecurity as a justification for seizing power, even though attacks have increased under their rule.

ECOWAS responded to the coups with biting economic sanctions, and it has threatened a military intervention to restore civilian rule in Niger. But it was accused of having double standards for not punishing civilian leaders who cause political instability by postponing elections or changing their country’s constitutions to stay in power longer.

A wave of coups has hit Africa in recent years, with nine military takeovers from 2020 to 2023 — a number unseen in decades. Most of them have been in West Africa.

In Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, the juntas refused to yield to ECOWAS’s demands to hand over power. The sanctions, which were backed by Britain, the European Union and the United States, were eventually lifted, and the alliance tried to push for dialogue with the three countries, but the juntas were not persuaded.

“They want to be let alone, not to be dictated how to run their countries or to be forced to hold elections,” Fahiraman Rodrigue Koné, the Sahel project manager at the Institute for Security Studies, a regional think tank, said in a telephone interview.

The three juntas have lately severed ties with some of their key traditional partners, ending military cooperation with France and the United States, and imposing new mining laws and taxes to maximize revenue from their ailing economies.

They have strengthened their cooperation with Russia, which provides them with weapons and mercenaries. And they have secured new contracts for China to run mining operations that were previously controlled by Western companies and to supply arms, according to local media outlets. Turkey, offering itself as an alternative, has also provided drones and mercenaries to Niger, state media said.

On Tuesday, protesters took to the streets in the three exiting countries’ capitals to celebrate the withdrawal. But analysts said that most people in these countries did not support the juntas’ decision to leave.

“Critical voices are suppressed,” said Gilles Yabi, the founder and executive director of the West Africa Citizen Think Tank.

Across the three countries, the human rights situation has sharply deteriorated, with thousands of civilians killed by the military and state-backed militias last year alone, according to rights groups.

But the Sahelian juntas have lately become somewhat less isolated. Ghana’s new president has appointed a special envoy to their new alliance, and Togo has signaled that it may apply for membership.

In a surprising turn of events, three countries have officially announced their decision to quit the major West African Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) alliance. This move has sparked debate and speculation about the future of regional cooperation in the area.

The countries in question, Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal, have cited a variety of reasons for their decision to withdraw from ECOWAS. Some officials have pointed to concerns about the alliance’s effectiveness in addressing regional security threats, while others have expressed frustration with the lack of progress on economic integration and development initiatives.

The departure of these key players from ECOWAS is sure to have significant implications for the region. Many are questioning whether other member states will follow suit, and what this could mean for the future of cooperation and unity in West Africa.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that the dynamics of regional politics in West Africa are undergoing a major shift. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

They don't listen to our voices

    1 out of 5 stars

They don't listen to our voices
The attached picture should have warned me. Vasco claim to have the best voice translator. I later discovered that claim was clearly factoring in only one human group in mind. Prior to my disappointment of Vasco V4 translator . I was happy to see , so many languages for different culture skin shades of the world as advertised by the Vasco V4. I put the Vasco V4 into my cart and ran to the check out line so fast , that the Flash was behind me in the 10 or less item checkout line. However , when it came to voice playback with Vasco's translator, many cultures gearing toward skin colors were left out (with voice playback). Voice playback results for majority of ; as they would categorize us as Brown people are lacking. Which is the key to learn the pronunciation of the language. I raised this issue with Vasco . A representative of Vasco LLC admitted to having many Haitians requesting a voice playback of their language. Unfortunately Vasco did not find that request worth inputting into their Translator. This is just a warning to cultures in the world. Jarvisen translators seems to be a better option for cultures of shades, because they have many languages that will playback more than the European world spoken language. I.E Swahili (Kenya) will playback in audio on Jarvisen but not on Vasco V4. I give Vasco V4 a 1 star, because they offer free lifetime internet. However , they refuse to accept a return of this item I purchased. I want my money returned . Culture people stay away from the shock of Vasco translator products. Your native tongue may not hold any value towards Vasco's devices. We need to be in mind with theses items are made. If they want our money. The following text is from Vasco. I understand and sympathize with your concern, but our language selections have nothing to do with race, culture, or ethnicity. The languages with voice output are based on the most in-demand and whether or not we have the resources or capability to add them. For example, in North America, I get frequent requests for Haitian Creole or Somali due to mass immigration and the humanitarian crisis of these groups.Back to me text . Yet , Vasco still don't have playback for the Haitian up til this date 10/31/2022 . Our voice don't matter very scary…..To this date Vasco never responded after stating in the Amazon response they were willing to work it out by email. Guess Vasco tried to prevent getting hit in pockets. Faking jacks

I’ve used translation apps and having. Standalone device was a game changer.

For the price I wish they would upgrade the chip so it would be instantaneous, but it was still plenty fast once it was working.

I used it in numerous places and having someone speak directly into the device and not having to worry about handing an iPhone pro max back and forth in a developing nation alone is worth the purchase.

It can translate long passages, and made it easy to hold conversations back responding to whole conversations. 3.8 stars is prolly fair, I’m giving it 4.

*you need to restart it daily. Also did not use offline mode, once I was in a building without connection and I could not use it.

As someone who travels a lot for work being able to communicate locally is imperative. I used to purchase local sim cards then use apps for translation. Which was OK. But having to purchase the sim card could be challenging at times.

Sure this device is not cheap. But to be able to have access to free lifetime data is what sold me. I now have immediate access to locals once I step off the plane. (In languages covered) which are plenty by the way, without having to source a sim card.

The device itself is very nicely made. Touch screen is perfect. The only update that would be nice is to have every language spoken as well as visually on the screen. (There are only a few that arnt spoken).

Yes it's pricey, but before you buy check the amount of info you are requiring from their web sites. With speaking more than one language, I use this to translate to the third party, (my cheat code of not needing to repeat everything again in another language) I like fancy when I buy stuff. So if you are questioning if this is right for you, the cheaper selection does the same job to minus a few options possibly. Down side, Hebrew does not work with this device… but Hebrew is easy to learn in a month. I got this so I'm not paying more to use the phone out of country to translate. This was the cheaper option in the long run. If you are good at budgeting, understanding future plans of finance you will understand this. Still can't find the option for translating woman, but then again this would not be affordable if that was the case.

My youngest daughter lives in zwitserland and works in International childcare where English is the main spoken language but the children age group 3 to 6 years of age are from all over the world.

  • Mexico and other countries could hamper Trump border plans

President Donald Trump’s plans to seal the U.S.-Mexico border and conduct mass deportations might soon run into a major roadblock: Mexico and the countries where the immigrants come from might not accept some of them back.

Trump on Monday signed an order to revive of the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which requires asylum-seekers to stay outside the United States as their claims are processed. But on the front lines of the U.S.-Mexico border, that requires a degree of cooperation from the Mexican government, which appears resistant.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters Wednesday she has not agreed to accept non-Mexican migrants seeking asylum in the United States, and such a move would require Mexico to agree, according to report in Reuters.

An expert witness at a House Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday listed other countries that have refused to take back migrants, such as Cuba, Venezuela, China, India, Bangladesh and Iran.

Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan, the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said Thursday that getting Mexico to cooperate with the Remain in Mexico policy “could be very problematic.”

“It’s really hard to actually institute that program if the Mexican government doesn’t agree, and I don’t think we can take that for granted, that they’re going to agree,” Peters said.

Peters also said the issue of Mexico being forced to accept migrants who are not from the Western Hemisphere, such as those from China, “complicates things as well.”

“The type of migration we’re seeing is different, and it is coming from outside of Latin America,” Peters said. “Not totally, but increasing numbers are coming from outside of Latin America. People are flying into Mexico. People are flying into Canada, they’re flying into other countries and then coming across the border.”

Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., at a hearing last week, enumerated a few of the kinds of migrants Mexico would not be willing to accept again.

“These are folks that are coming in from Tajikistan and other areas the Mexicans are not going to take back,” Lankford said. “These are recalcitrant countries that are not accepting folks back.”

In fiscal 2024, nearly 38,000 nationals from China were found by Border Patrol to have come into the United States illegally from Mexico, which is a steep climb from the 2,200 encountered in the whole of fiscal 2022.

Lankford said international organizations like ISIS are sending people from Tajikistan in from Mexico because they saw the success drug cartels were having with immigrants coming into the United States.

The senator concluded that “some sort of legal response” is needed, including a legislative change that would give authority to the State Department to put pressure on some of these countries as well.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., during the same Homeland Security hearing last week, questioned why Mexico would be able to resist migrants from outside the Western Hemisphere when they entered Mexico in the first place to try to enter the United States.

“They get into Mexico and then they come to the United States — why shouldn’t that be Mexico’s problem?” Scott said. “Why shouldn’t we just say, ‘You’re the one who let them into your country’? Why [is it] our problem? It’s their problem. You raise their tariffs until they do it.”

The previous versions of the Remain in Mexico policy had some level of agreement from Mexico, some of it the result of the sort of tactics Scott mentioned.

    Back to ‘Remain’

In his first term, Trump announced the Remain in Mexico policy in 2018 with the cooperation of Mexico’s then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The reasoning behind why Mexico initially agreed to accept migrants in 2018 under the program is unclear, Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, said Thursday.

“We don’t entirely know,” Reichlin-Melnick said. “As a matter of fact, there was a lot of confusion over what the specific boundaries of the deal were, and we are still not entirely clear about it.”

While the program was at first limited to one point of entry and specific nationalities, Trump’s threat in 2019 for 25 percent tariffs got Mexico to agree to expand it further, Reichlin-Melnick said.

“So very clearly, Mexico played a significant role in deciding the boundaries of the program,” Reichlin-Melnick said. “Nevertheless, the official position of the Mexican government has always been, ‘This actually has nothing to do with us. We didn’t choose to do this.’”

Although Trump has said Mexico has agreed to it, the Mexican government has signaled it has not, Reichlin-Melnick said.

“We don’t have full agreement on this,” Reichlin-Melnick said. “What does that actually mean? It’s a little bit more confusion, and we are waiting to hear more from the Trump administration on how the program will … come back, who it will be applied to, and when.”

Ariel Ruiz, senior policy analyst for the Migration Policy Institute, said that whether Mexico agrees to the policy again in 2025 depends on new factors because the “negotiation landscape between Mexico and the United States is very different.”

“Mexico, since May, has been detaining more migrants in Mexico than Border Patrol has detained at the U.S.-Mexico border every month since May,” Ruiz said. “And that’s a really significant achievement, because Mexico has a fraction of the funding that U.S. agencies will receive.”

Doris Meissner, director of the U.S. Immigration Policy Program at the Migration Policy Institute, said during a conference call on Tuesday that Trump’s other policies “could really hamper” cooperation between the United States and Mexico on the return of migrants.

“The issue of tariffs on Mexico, imposing 25 percent starting very soon, renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, threats to retake the Panama Canal will make it much more difficult for those countries to cooperate with the United States going forward,” Meissner said. “So there are those impediments and those internal tensions, similarly with mass deportations.”

    Other issues

The human cost of forcing migrants to return outside the U.S.-Mexico border is another factor in play. Critics of the policy stay it essentially subjects asylum-seekers to the whims of drug cartels, who exploit migrants for money, rape and kidnapping.

Adam Isacson, director for defense oversight at The Washington Office on Latin America, testified at the Senate hearing last week that the policy turned migrants into “sitting ducks for the cartels.”

“Foreigners have to pay just to exist for a long time in cartel-dominated neighborhoods,” Isacson said. “If you don’t pay, it’s not safe to go outside your shelter, even if the United States is helping support.”

Kenneth Cuccinelli, a top official in the Homeland Security Department during the first Trump administration, said at a Senate hearing last week that Mexico has long had “very permissive entry,” but said he agreed with Scott “100 percent” that a tougher approach may be the best one.

“I think Mexico would start to finally develop some vetting for people coming into Mexico if we dumped everybody back into Mexico. And there are people in this room, I’m sure, [who] wouldn’t like that, and it would be ugly for a period of time,” Cuccinelli said. “But if people knew they could not get into the United States, and they wouldn’t be allowed to wait around for the 1,013 days for the hearing that they wouldn’t show up for, they won’t come in the first place.”

Under questioning from Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Wis., at a House committee hearing Wednesday, a witness said the State Department isn’t required to withhold visas to countries that won’t accept these migrants.

“The State Department, historically, has been very reluctant to use visa sanctions to impose consequences on countries that are not fulfilling their international obligation to take their citizens back,” Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, said.

Congress could pass a law to require the executive branch to use visa sanctions or other diplomatic tools, such as withholding foreign assistance, Vaughan said.

As President Trump continues to push for his controversial border wall, countries like Mexico and others could potentially throw a wrench in his plans. With tensions already high between the US and Mexico over immigration and trade issues, it wouldn’t be surprising if Mexico sought to resist or undermine Trump’s efforts to build a wall along the southern border.

Additionally, other countries could also play a role in complicating Trump’s border plans. For example, Central American countries like Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador have been major sources of migrants seeking to enter the US. If these countries were to push back against US border enforcement measures, it could further complicate the situation at the border.

Overall, Trump’s border plans are likely to face significant challenges from other countries, and the situation could easily escalate into a diplomatic standoff. It remains to be seen how these countries will respond to Trump’s border policies, but it’s clear that the issue of immigration and border security will continue to be a contentious issue on the international stage.
