Country music star walks off stage, postpones multiple shows
Kelsea Ballerini took to social media Sunday to announce that she would be in Philadelphia for her show on Monday.
And that news was welcomed by her fans because she, apparently, was pretty darned ill heading into the weekend. In fact, Ballerini had to walk off the stage for her show in Buffalo after just 20 minutes. She gave it a go there, according to Newsweek, after telling fans that she had been battling the flu.
But she didn’t last long until she walked off the stage, and a representative came on to address the crowd.
“This is the conversation I did not want to have tonight,” he told fans. “She just can’t finish. She is just too sick.”
Ballerini then took to social media to apologize.
“Buffalo, I am so, so, so sorry that I could not finish the show tonight,” she said. “I am sicker than I am trying to be. I didn’t want to let anyone down tonight, but I got through the first songs tonight I couldn’t do it.”
Ballerini then move weekend dates in Toronto and Pittsburg to April, per Newsweek.
“I will make them the best shows I have ever played in my life,” she promised. “I hope you understand, nad thank you for the grace to be human, and I love you.”
Ballerini is slated to play the Wells Fargo Center on Monday with show time listed as 7 p.m.
Country music fans were left disappointed and shocked as popular country music star, Luke Bryan, walked off stage during a recent concert and announced the postponement of multiple upcoming shows.The incident occurred during Bryan’s performance at a sold-out show in Nashville, where he abruptly stopped singing and told the audience he was feeling unwell. He then apologized and walked off stage, leaving fans in disbelief.
Bryan’s management team released a statement shortly after the incident, explaining that the singer was suffering from a sudden illness and needed to take time to rest and recover. As a result, several upcoming shows have been postponed until further notice.
Fans who had been eagerly anticipating seeing Bryan perform live were understandably upset by the news, but most expressed their support and well wishes for the singer’s speedy recovery.
Despite the disappointment, fans are hopeful that Bryan will be back on stage soon, giving them the electrifying performances they have come to expect from the country music star.

In Iowa’s farm country, small towns rally around a native son in football’s biggest game
ODEBOLT, Iowa (AP) — In the farm town where Cooper DeJean drew up football plays in elementary school and taught classmates to run them at recess, residents plan a huge party to watch the town’s native son in the Super Bowl.
The Philadelphia Eagles defensive back has lifted spirits in Odebolt, Iowa, a town of 920 people once known as the Popcorn Capital of the World.
Residents say he’s also inspired children in the four towns that make up the local school district in this remote region of Western Iowa, where he played quarterback in stadiums carved out of cornfields.
“People want to root for him because of how he carries himself,” said Larry Allen, who was DeJean’s high school football coach.
“Cooper is so unassuming, and he doesn’t talk about himself, he doesn’t showcase himself. He’s a very humble young man, and he did most of his talking on the field of play.”
On Sunday fans will gather in the Odebolt Community Building for a Super Bowl watch party they’re calling the “Cooper Bowl.” Many plan to wear special Eagles green T-shirts printed up for the occasion that feature DeJean’s No. 33. It’s also a birthday party for DeJean, who turns 22 on Super Bowl Sunday.
“The whole town is just ecstatic,” said Cory Duff, who owns The Bolt Drive-In, a local restaurant.
“I would say it has brought a renewed energy back to the community,” he said. “It has definitely uplifted everybody around here.”
Duff said he’s a die-hard Denver Broncos fan “and I even bought his jersey.”
“Everybody around here has their own team, but whenever the Eagles are playing, everyone’s watching,” Duff said.
DeJean’s father, Jason, said he was touched by a video that school employees made featuring dozens of children and teachers wishing his son the best in the Super Bowl.
“They all got on the playground and spelled out ‘Cooper,’” Jason DeJean said. The nearly 5-minute video is infused with cuteness, with one scene showing elementary school students making hand motions to imitate birds as they sing the team’s fight song, “Fly Eagles Fly.”
Ever since DeJean began flying around the football field at the University of Iowa, “the support around this community has been just crazy,” Jason DeJean said. “Now you see Eagle jerseys and 33 and all that stuff. It’s great to see, and you couldn’t ask for any more support than what this community gives.”
After winning back-to-back state football championships in his final two years of high school, DeJean went on to a stellar career at the University of Iowa where he was named an All-American. In the 2024 NFL draft, the Eagles selected him in the second round.
Only a handful of athletes from the small towns of the Western Valley Activities Conference go on to compete in any sport at a major university, making DeJean’s path from Odebolt to the Iowa Hawkeyes and now the Philadelphia Eagles one of the most improbable ever taken in this part of Western Iowa.
“It’s not very often a kid from a town of less than 1,000 people gets to go to the Super Bowl,” Duff said.
DeJean’s intense work ethic is a common thread that ties him to legendary athletes from other parts of the state such as former Iowa Hawkeye and WNBA star Caitlin Clark, from West Des Moines, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, from Burlington, who played in high school in Cedar Rapids.
DeJean’s path to the Super Bowl has cast a spotlight on Odebolt, but it was the dirt he played on that helped put the town and its surrounding farmland on the map.
A two-lane highway winds down from the Loess Hills on Iowa’s western edge, past giant wind turbines and fields of corn and soybeans to get to Odebolt.
A 20-mile (32-kilometer) stretch of the road, Iowa Highway 175, connects the towns that send students to DeJean’s old high school: Battle Creek, Ida Grove, Odebolt and blink-and-you-miss-it Arthur, population 222.
In this wide-open area, farm animals outnumber people by a wide margin. The county that includes Odebolt is home to about 46,000 cattle — more than four times the human population of 9,800, according to numbers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The rich, black soil surrounding Odebolt was seen as ideal for growing popcorn and led Chicago’s Cracker Jack Co. to choose it to supply the popcorn for its Cracker Jack snacks.
Cracker Jack Co. Executive Vice President E.R. Shields praised Odebolt’s early pioneers, who created the town from wilderness. And their descendants were “shining examples of strength, fortitude and foresight that has made your community ‘The Popcorn Center of the World,’” he wrote in 1938 in the Odebolt Chronicle.
Residents who know DeJean say they see that same strength and fortitude in him. They speak highly of his work ethic in sports, but also his personality traits in life.
“The kid is insanely humble, and he’s not going to forget where he comes from,” Duff said.

Watch the Grammys tonight as Shaboozey pushes for a country win — and acceptance
Shaboozey goes into this Sunday’s Grammy Awards with five nominations, including song of the year, country song of the year and country solo performance for his cross-genre smash, “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” The song was released shortly after Shaboozey was featured on two songs on Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” album, and he’s also up for a best melodic rap performance Grammy for their collaboration “Spaghettii.”
The Grammy nods are just the latest milestones for Shaboozey, who will be starring in a Super Bowl commercial for the candy Nerds before performing at both the pop/rock-oriented Coachella festival and its country cousin, the Stagecoach Festival, in the coming months.
Arguably no Black artist has ever burst onto the country music charts with a bigger splash than Shaboozey.
Historically, only a very small number of Black artists have ever built sustained careers in country music. So far, they’ve all been men. Darius Rucker has been a country mainstay for years, but his success with Hootie & the Blowfish provided a crossover leg up. The 29-year-old Virginia native was raised on a mix of his dad’s Kenny Rogers albums and the pop and hip-hop he heard on MTV and BET, leading to a sound that mixes country and hip-hop. Rissi Palmer, the musician, activist and host of Apple Radio’s “Color Me Country,” played Shaboozey’s music on her show long before he released his crossover megahit “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” last year. As Palmer told me, his music has long “straddled the line,” with “vibes of Norman North and early Jelly Roll.”
Though he appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards and performed at the BET Awards over the summer, Shaboozey has also performed at country spaces like the Grand Ole Opry, the CMA Music Festival in Nashville, and the CMA Awards, where he was nominated for single of the year and new artist of the year. A few comments made about Shaboozey’s name during the CMA Awards drew criticism, but Shaboozey himself has steered clear of making too many statements on political issues or the lack of diversity in country music.
Lyrically, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is in line with country music’s long-standing penchant for celebrating around-the-clock drinking. The song was a massive hit in the country format, becoming the first song by a Black man to simultaneously top Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart — which it did for 27 weeks — and its Country Airplay chart, for a seven-week run. The country radio support is noteworthy; the format has not typically supported viral hits from Black artists.
Black artists have slowly but surely been gaining traction. But the reception from the various country institutions continues to be mixed, if not contradictory.
With 19 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 chart, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has now tied Lil Nas X’s 2019 country-rap smash “Old Town Road” for the most weeks atop that tally. However, “Old Town Road” was removed from Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, which measures radio play, streaming numbers and sales figures for country tracks. Despite its Western themes, the artist’s Georgia twang and a remix featuring country star Billy Ray Cyrus, Billboard claimed that “Old Town Road” “does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.” “Old Town Road” eventually won a CMA Award for musical event of the year in 2019, but that trophy was presented off camera. Lil Nas X went on to find further success in pop music with his next album, 2021’s “Montero,” which was not promoted to the country format.
Also in 2019, hip-hop producer-turned-artist Blanco Brown scored a viral hit with the “The Git Up,” which was touted as a “sequel” to “Old Town Road.” Unlike Lil Nas X’s song, Blanco’s track did go to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart but stalled out at No. 44 on the Country Airplay chart.
Also unlike Lil Nas X, Brown had the backing of a Nashville-based record label, Broken Bow Records. He scored a top country radio hit in 2021 with “Just the Way,” a collaboration with his label mates, country group Parmalee. Since then, Brown has not charted another song on either country chart, and he recently posted about having a gig canceled due to rising racial tensions.
Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” going all the way to No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart marks progress in this narrative. But membership in Nashville’s inner circle is signified by consistent play on country radio, and charting one massive hit doesn’t guarantee more will follow, especially for artists of color.
“We know that Black women have virtually no shot at gaining traction in mainstream country music,” writes The Tennessean columnist Andrea Williams. “Black men seem to be doing a bit better — there’s Charley and Darius, after all — but it’s all a façade. Black male artists like Blanco Brown, like Breland, like Shaboozey are given one hit — an uptempo, hip hop-tinged hit that has those “Song of the Summer” vibes — and then they tend to disappear. Rather, they lose all industry support, so it feels like they’ve disappeared, even though, in most cases, they’re still grinding behind the scenes and trying to build something sustainable.”

Shaboozey is signed to independent record label Empire, the same company that previously helped launch Kane Brown’s country career. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” was the the first No. 1 country radio hit for Empire’s Nashville office. Along the way, the Empire team helped Shaboozey develop relationships with the decision-makers at country radio that would program his singles. That practice of artists having to personally win over program directors is unique to country music.
Global superstar Beyoncé did not engage in a charm offensive to win over country music insiders when she released “Cowboy Carter,” and it didn’t go unnoticed. The project hit No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and she became the first Black woman to have a single top the country charts with “Texas Hold ’Em.” But she received zero nominations at last year’s CMA Awards.
Notably, white male hip-hop artists seem to have an easier time achieving crossover success on country radio. Jelly Roll is up for two Grammys in country categories this year, after previously releasing seven hip-hop albums. He’s also racked up five country radio chart toppers since 2022. Rap/pop superstar Post Malone has made a similar leap, earning two No. 1 country radio hits (so far) from his star-studded “F-1 Trillion” album, which is up for best country album at Sunday’s Grammys.
Shaboozey’s follow-up singles to “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” are not racing up the Country Airplay chart. Some Grammy wins could give those follow-up singles — like “Good News” and “Highway” — a boost. Regardless, Shaboozey is doubling down. He recently told Billboard his “next project is going to be even more country.”
For Palmer, seeing Shaboozey achieve country radio longevity would be a welcome and surprising development. “Shaboozey has put down roots as a country artist,” she told me. “Personally, I would like to see him treated as a viable country artist and not just a novelty or a byproduct of Beyoncé stopping by.”
Williams has a less optimistic view. The fact that he didn’t win any trophies at the CMA Awards, despite having the biggest country single of 2024, may indicate where Shaboozey’s story is headed.
“He’ll have the hit song that makes everybody dance, but he won’t have the follow-up success that will allow him to book shows and make music and win awards in the future,” she said. “By limiting Shaboozey to just that one hit, it also ensures his name is just a footnote instead of a full entry in country music’s history books. This way, the status quo stands.”

The Fire Country Season 3 midseason finale concluded with a stressful cliffhanger and multiple characters’ lives at risk. Now, after more than a month of waiting, new episodes of the firefighter drama are airing tonight — hopefully bringing much-needed answers to viewers.
Fire Country’s midseason finale, titled “Promise Me,” aired on Dec. 13. In the intense episode, Bode, Audrey, Gabriela, and Manny all found themselves in danger. Bode and Audrey, caught in the midst of raging flames after trying to save a home, sought refuge against a wildfire in a pool — except Audrey can’t swim. While newly released photos from the midseason premiere confirm Bode’s survival, Audrey’s fate still remains unknown heading into Episoede 9.
Gabriela also finds herself in serious danger by the end of the midseason finale. After a heated argument with Jake, she quits her job and leaves her protective gear behind — a decision that quickly backfires as the wildfire engulfs the area around her. Her father, Manny, is now risking everything to search for her. His decision to leave his post as a convicted firefighter could have serious consequences.
On the bright side, Stephanie Arcila, who plays Gabriela, teased to CinemaBlend that Friday’s midseason premiere is “intensely beautiful and shocking.” She also hinted that “audiences are going to be happy” and “they’re going to get something.”

Along with numerous characters in peril, Eve’s family ranch is also in jeopardy. “I don’t think we will ever see Eve more determined to win against fire as we’re about to see in the premiere episode, which is great,” Napolitano teased. “It’s just like a great color on her. She’s so often there for our people. We get to see our people be there for her and have her family be at the center of everything and the focus as opposed to the Leone family in that episode. And it’s just a nice expansion of the world.”

Faster Horses country music festival hits pause for 2025
The Faster Horses festival, an annual staple on the summer concert schedule for more than a decade, is taking a “pause” this year, organizers said in a statement released Friday afternoon.
“Dear Fans, we have made the decision to pause Faster Horses Festival in 2025. We are taking the year to make plans for a bigger and better Faster Horses for our fans who deserve the absolute best,” organizers said in statement posted to the festival’s website.
The three-day country music festival at Brooklyn’s Michigan International Speedway launched in 2013 and has hosted many of country music’s top acts, including Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley, Brooks & Dunn, Blake Shelton, Zac Brown Band, Keith Urban and more.
Organizers referred to it as a “three-day hillbilly sleepover,” and the Live Nation-produced festival annually drew around 40,000 hard-partying fans who camped out on the MIS grounds and dotted the landscape in 10-gallon hats, cowboy boots and American flags.
“We love our friends at Michigan International Speedway, the community, and all of those behind the scenes,” the statement read. “While we hope to bring you something in the future, for now we encourage you to keep the community strong and support live music in Michigan!”
The note was signed “BOC” — short for Faster Horses head Brian O’Connell — and “Team Faster Horses.”
The “pause” comes amid a general downturn in music festivals across the board, in the U.S. and beyond. In 2024, Indio, California’s Coachella festival — a bellwether for the festival landscape, and the annual kickoff to summer festival season — struggled to sell out for the first time in more than a decade, and the 2024 edition of San Francisco’s Outside Lands didn’t sell out.
The rising cost of ticket prices and the stretched pocketbooks of fans, plus a potential generational shift away from festivals, has hindered the festival business model.
In addition, a lack of fresh headline acts — lineups for this year’s Coachella, New York’s Governor’s Ball and regional fests across the U.S. are seen as softer than years past — has contributed to a general feeling of malaise in concertgoers.
The 2024 Faster Horses festival featured Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson and Hardy.
Since its launch, Faster Horses was held at MIS on the third weekend in July, save for 2020, when it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today’s Mainstream Country Music
Without question, many of today’s mainstream stars are a giant improvement over the mid-2010’s A-listers. As I write this, Lainey Wilson, Cody Johnson, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, Megan Moroney, and Zach Top are all up there on the Top 40 chart, which is a clear step up from the bro-country and boyfriend-country days. To add onto the good news, some artists who never would have gotten a chance at radio are putting up numbers and having an opportunity to showcase their art to a vast audience. Muscadine Bloodline had the most added song on radio with “10-90” just last week, Koe Wetzel (yes, not traditional country but still a unique and authentic style, and certainly someone outside the industry) had a number one with “High Road”, and Parker McCollum carved out a nice niche on radio, which is very exciting considering his wife claims the Limestone Kid is fully back . I know I mentioned him already but I’d be remiss not to give Zach Top another huge shoutout. No one, and I mean no one, has been able to see the commercial success he has while sticking to his guns with a 90’s country sound. That’s no small feat in an industry not long ago captured by snap tracks, hip-hop bass lines, and sugary, unfulfilling lyrics. Dylan Scott’s Top 10 Singles
Before we move on, let me clear the air here… I don’t have anything personal against Dylan Scott. In fact, his song “Makin’ This Boy Go Crazy” helped me woo over my now wife back in the day (yes, I was that kid in college with a guitar but hey, the ring on my finger proves it worked). I’m sure Dylan is a fine guy to hang out with and I will not make any assumptions about his character or any facets of his life other than the music he makes. With that being said, I opened my inbox this morning to a Dylan Scott press release. The subject line got my attention because truth be told I hadn’t listened to a Dylan Scott song in years… “Multi-Platinum Artist Dylan Scott Remains A Force At Country Radio With Two Singles In Top 10” The press release went on to say he’s the fourth most played artist at country radio so far this year and that his 2024 album Livin’ My Best Life (Still) was his highest charting project on Billboard’s Top 200 , containing six gold or platinum singles and 4 number ones. Let me get this straight… Dylan Scott, 11 years removed from “Makin’ This Boy Go Crazy” and 8 years removed from his self-titled debut album featuring “My Girl”, “Hooked”, and “Crazy Over Me”, is still dominating country radio? Okay, maybe he pulled a Chase Rice and decided to forgo the advice of his label and make some quality music with deep lyrics. It’s possible, right? Let’s take a look at his current Top 10 songs and see for ourselves:

Ah, it’s something ain’t itNot a great start… Lots of cliches, mentions beer and a random spot in the country where you can park and get naked, of course says he won a football state championship (which I can neither confirm or deny with a few quick Google searches), and obviously has a line about talking with an accent.
Throw in the fact that this was written by 5 (yes, five) fully grown adults who make their living as professional songwriters and it’s pretty clear to see this is yet another example of generic, vanilla, radio filler-noise that’s so universally applicable no one actually relates to it. What about the other song? It’s not exactly his, he’s a feature, but if his PR team counts it than so do I:

Yeah, here’s to the boys back home
Drinking dirt road beers on a Friday night
Yeah, I’m wishing I was with y’all
Singing them old songs

Typically, I wouldn’t be upset by this. We know the Nashville machine’s core competency is churning out bland but hyper-palatable songs that background listeners don’t mind hearing but the industry itself has shown a willingness, heck even an excitement, to begin playing real country artists that make emotional, specific, and moving music. The Red Clay Strays were nominated for CMA Vocal Group of the Year. Flatland Cavalry was nominated for ACM Group of the Year. Sierra Ferrell is opening for Post Malone, Stephen Wilson Jr. has independent and mainstream fans alike obsessed with his sound, Tyler Childers cracked the Top 40 for the first time (somehow) with “In Your Love” and has an entire catalogue of songs that people need to hear. Hailey Whitters unfairly disappeared from radio after “Everything She Ain’t” ran its course, heck even Zach Bryan has a bunch of great songs past “Something In The Orange” and “Pink Skies”, and those are just some of the artists that Nashville has flirted with in the past. Throw in the slew of artists that clearly would fit on radio if given the chance and the fact that Dylan Scott remains a chart-topping fixature turns into a cruel joke. Are we really going to pretend that 49 Winchester, Colby Acuff, Maggie Antone, Randall King, Wyatt Flores, Silverada, Kaitlin Butts, Charles Wesley Godwin, or Sam Barber wouldn’t explode (even more) if the masses were given a chance to hear their music? You could forget all about the cheesy, cookie-cutter songs that have long been synonymous with country music if anyone of those artists (or tons I didn’t mention) had a real chance. I get it takes awhile for large ships to alter course, but it seems like if the country music industry really wanted to go back to the days where the radio actually played good music, they would prioritize playing good music on the radio. Do Better, Country Radio
Honestly, good for Dylan Scott. The man has earned generational wealth for his family, is married to his high school sweetheart, and looks to be an incredible father to his three children. It’s not his fault the industry tries to standardize every artist into a radio-friendly bucket… he simply played the game and won. And if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it… hard to blame him. It’s honestly almost impressive that he’s been able to maintain such great radio relevancy with a sound that still sounds straight out of 2014. My gripe is not with Dylan Scott but the industry that promotes him. Music, and all art, is supposed to reveal the most human parts of us all, dig deep into the unspeakable, and help us realize truths that were there all along but we couldn’t see. That’s not to say there’s no room for fun, happy songs; there certainly is. But when seemingly everything is a cliche about getting drunk in a truck bed, it’s easy to follow the logic which leads us to a land of nothing beyond the surface, and a population of frustrated, uninspired people.
