‘Their physical toughness is as good as anybody in the country’

Don’t be fooled by those breezy blue uniforms and glitzy surroundings from which they come. Nebraska’s upcoming foe UCLA has a gritty quality to its game just like Huskers believe they have building.

It’s written all over the tape when Nebraska’s head coach watches the Bruins.

“Their physical toughness is as good as anybody in the country … It’s 1 through 5,” Fred Hoiberg said Thursday. “Those guys guard anybody. Their physicality. Their steal percentage is No. 1 in the nation. They’re going to be in gaps. We can’t play in a crowd. That’s going to be as important as anything in this game. If you do they’re going to take it from you.”

It’s a big clash at The Vault ahead and UCLA isn’t messing around, arriving to town on this Thursday, two days ahead to acclimate to the time zone and prep for Saturday’s 1 p.m. showdown on Fox.

The game offers plenty of appeal. The Huskers haven’t lost in 19 straight games at Pinnacle Bank Arena. And No. 15 UCLA shows up having won 10 of its last 11, holding teams to less than 59 points per game.

Hoiberg reminds his team, which turned it over 10 times in the second half of a 77-43 win over Southern on Monday, that it’s not going to be the first team to suddenly rip past UCLA’s first line of defense.

In this post, we will discuss the incredible physical toughness of a group of athletes that rivals the best in the country. These individuals have proven time and time again that they are willing to push their bodies to the limit in order to achieve their goals. From grueling workouts to intense competitions, their resilience and determination are unmatched. Join us as we dive into what sets these athletes apart and how their unwavering physical toughness has helped them succeed on a national level.

  • A weekend cool down with high country wind alerts

A weekend cool down with high country wind alerts

PHOENIX — After we broke a record high and hit the 80s on Friday, a weekend cool down is in store!

The area of high pressure that’s kept us warm with stagnant air is breaking down this weekend as a cold front sweeps through the state today. This storm will not bring any rain or snow to the state but it will bring some cooler air and windy conditions along and north of the Rim.

A wind advisory is in effect for portions of Apache and Navajo Counties today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gust could reach 40-50 mph.

Back in the Valley, overnight lows will continue to drop into the mid to upper 40s over the next few days, so our mornings will stay nice and cool.

Afternoon highs will hit the low 70s for the weekend and the start of the new week.

Fine particle pollution (dust and smoke) is lingering over the Valley. The worst of it will impact us in the morning hours, with air quality gradually improving throughout the day.

A Burn Ban will be back in effect Sunday across Maricopa County, so burning wood in fireplaces, stoves, and outdoor firepits will be prohibited.

A second storm midweek could cool temperatures even closer to seasonable for the second half of the week with a chance for rain in the Valley and snow in the high country.

Although we will see a cool-off for the upcoming week, temperatures will remain a few degrees above average for this time of the year and above-average temperatures will likely remain in the forecast overall through the month of January and into spring.

As the weekend approaches, it’s time to start planning how to unwind and relax after a long week. One way to cool down and enjoy some time outdoors is to head to the high country for some fresh mountain air. However, it’s important to be aware of any high country wind alerts that may be in effect.

High country wind alerts are issued when strong gusts of wind are expected in mountainous areas. These alerts can impact outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and picnicking, so it’s important to stay informed and take precautions.

If you’re planning a weekend getaway to the high country, make sure to check the weather forecast and any wind alerts that may be in effect. Be prepared by packing extra layers, securing your tent or campsite, and avoiding areas with high wind exposure.

Despite the potential for high winds, a weekend in the high country can still be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. Take in the stunning views, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and enjoy some quality time with nature. Just remember to stay safe and be mindful of any wind alerts that may be in effect.

Alaska’s History, Revised Edition: The People, Land, and Events of the North Country

Alaska, the largest state in the United States, is a land of rugged beauty and rich history. From the native peoples who have called this land home for thousands of years, to the Russian fur traders who first explored its shores, to the gold miners who flocked to the Klondike in the late 19th century, Alaska has a fascinating and diverse history.

In this revised edition of Alaska’s History, we delve into the stories of the people, land, and events that have shaped this northernmost state. From the Aleut and Inuit peoples who have lived in harmony with the land for centuries, to the arrival of Russian explorers and settlers in the 18th century, to the purchase of Alaska from Russia by the United States in 1867, this book traces the history of the state from its earliest days to the present.

We also explore the impact of the gold rushes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which brought thousands of prospectors to Alaska in search of riches. We delve into the construction of the Alaska Railroad, which connected the interior of the state to the coast, and the building of the Alaska Highway, which linked Alaska to the rest of the United States.

From the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 to the creation of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, we examine the environmental and political challenges that have faced Alaska in recent years. And we look ahead to the future, exploring how the state’s unique culture and natural resources will continue to shape its destiny.

Alaska’s History, Revised Edition is a comprehensive and engaging look at the people, land, and events that have made Alaska the unique and fascinating place it is today. Whether you are a longtime resident of the state or a newcomer eager to learn more about its history, this book is sure to inform and inspire.

    WEATHER HEADLINES

    • NEXT 12: Quiet and cold this evening; overnight lows in the teens for many
    • SHORT TERM: Significant winter storm begins Sunday morning and continues into Monday
    • LONG TERM: Bitterly cold temperatures expected for much of next week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – It’s cold and it’ll get even colder heading into Saturday morning as lows plummet into the teens and lower 20s across WAVE Country.

Skies will remain clear as the quiet before the late weekend winter storm continues. Saturday will be the pick of the weekend despite the cold temperatures. Highs only climb into the upper 20s and low 30s tomorrow afternoon. Clouds increase Saturday night ahead of our Sunday winter storm. We’ll stay dry, however. Morning lows drop into the 20s.

Sunday is a WAVE Weather ALERT DAY as a winter storm brings impactful amounts of wintry mix (ice) and/or snow to our area. After starting out with snow Sunday morning, precipitation will change over to a wintry mix or freezing rain near and south of I-64.

Our current forecast has the most significant ice accretion between Louisville and the Kentucky parkways, where over a half inch of ice is expected. Areas further to the north and south will see lower but still impactful amounts of ice.

The highest snowfall toals are expected across our far northern counties in Indiana, where 8 to 12 inches of snow is expected. Areas along the I-64 corridor (including Louisville) could see 4 to 8 inches of snow while areas south of Louisville will snowfall amounts between 1 and 4 inches.

The storm is expected to begin Sunday morning and continue through Monday, with the heaviest snowfall expected Sunday night. Strong winds gusting up to 40 mph will create blizzard-like conditions, reducing visibility and making travel extremely hazardous.

Residents are urged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary, as driving conditions will be treacherous. Power outages are also possible due to the high winds and heavy snow.

Make sure to stock up on essentials like food, water, and medications, and have a plan in place in case of emergency. Stay tuned to local news and weather updates for the latest information on the storm and any advisories or warnings that may be issued.

Listen: The conclusion of the Weeknd’s ‘After Hours’ trilogy, Ringo Starr’s country album and more

The Chronicle’s curated list of notable new music releases for January.

Ethel Cain’s new project, “Perverts,” is due out Wednesday, Jan. 8.

    Photo: Jessica Christian/The Chronicle

Ethel Cain, ‘Perverts’ (Daughters of Cain)

Ethel Cain is taking a break from the Ethel Cain lore.

The singer, known offstage as Hayden Silas Anhedönia, crafted a tale centered on the character with whom she shares a stage name on her 2022 debut, “Preacher’s Daughter.”

Chronicling the kidnapping, forced prostitution and eventual murder of her character, the album is bundled in a fictional context that Cain has assured fans is not relevant to her upcoming follow-up “Perverts.”

Diverging from the narrative of her debut, her new project is out Wednesday, Jan. 8, and consists of nine tracks. The 90-minute-long project’s lead single, “Punish,” was released in November, maintaining the ambient, slightly eerie sound that she established on her debut.

Franz Ferdinand is returning after seven years with “The Human Fear,” which is scheduled to release on Friday, Jan. 10.

    Photo: Nicky J Sims/Getty Images

Franz Ferdinand, ‘The Human Fear’ (Domino)

After a seven-year hiatus, Franz Ferdinand is reuniting with producer Mark Ralph, who worked on its 2013 record “Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action” for a brand-new project. Titled “The Human Fear,” the Scottish band’s new album is due out Friday, Jan. 10, and is led by the upbeat single “Audacious.”

In a statement, the band’s lead singer Alex Kapranos explained that the track is about “having an audacious response when you feel the fabric of existence come undone around you. Being bold, contrary.”

Kapranos also explained that the album as a whole tackles the fears and thrills that make up the human experience.

Ringo Starr’s new country album, “Look Up,” is set for release on Friday, Jan. 10.

    Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images

    Ringo Starr, ‘Look Up’ (UM)

The Beatles alum is returning to his lifelong passion for country music with 11 new songs. Part of his upcoming album “Look Up,” which is scheduled to release on Friday, Jan. 10, the songs were produced and co-written by Grammy-winning producer, guitarist and lyricist T Bone Burnett. Starr recently threw a listening event in London to promote the project, and welcomed guests such as Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and the Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood.

Though he has released a handful of EPs since 2021, Starr told Mojo magazine that his forthcoming album “was an absolute surprise,” recalling the moment in 2022 when he was reunited with Burnett, whom he had met in the 1970s. He asked Burnett if he would write for him in the future, and the two quickly got to writing the record in Los Angeles and Nashville.

Rebecca Black is expected to release her sophomore album, “Salvation,” on Jan. 17.

Photo: Adam Pardee/Special to the Chronicle

    Rebecca Black, ‘Salvation’ (self-released)

The “Friday” singer has come a long way since she went viral at 13. Despite having the most disliked YouTube video in 2011, Black persisted with making music and has since taken on an evolved and playful hyper-pop sound. Her seven-track sophomore album, “Salvation,” is expected to release Jan. 17, and features the lead singles “Trust!” and “Sugar Water Cyanide.”

Black is planning to return to the Bay Area on her accompanying tour on March 7. A frequent visitor, she performed at Pier 80’s Portola Festival in September and played a free DJ set as part of the Downtown First Thursdays street party in December.

Mac Miller’s second posthumous release, “Balloonerism,” is due out Jan. 17.

    Photo: Rich Fury/Getty Images

    Mac Miller, ‘Balloonerism’ (Warner Records)

A lost album from late rapper Mac Miller is set to release on Jan. 17, after a trailer for the project was teased at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in November.

According to Miller’s estate, the project was created around the time of his 2014 “Faces” mixtape, and Miller had already commissioned the artwork for it, an image of the rapper painted by artist Alim Smith. Unofficial versions of the album have been floating around the internet for years, and many are speculating that R&B singer SZA has a few features on the album.

“We believe the project showcases both the breadth of his musical talents and fearlessness as an artist,” Miller’s estate wrote in a statement. “Releasing ‘Balloonerism’ was something that Malcolm frequently expressed being important to him.”

FKA Twigs plans to release her new project “Eusexua” on Jan. 24.

    Photo: Jordan Peck/Getty Images

    FKA twigs, ‘Eusexua’ (Young)

Returning five years after her last release, “Magdalene,” the British singer-songwriter is highlighting her evolution with a unique, sensual and somewhat eerie project called “Eusexua.” Slated to drop on Jan. 24, it is anchored by its title track and accompanying music video, which feels like an episode of “Succession” if it took place in a science fiction universe.

“EUSEXUA is a practice / EUSEXUA is a state of being / EUSEXUA is the pinnacle of human experience,” the singer wrote on the social platform X when announcing the album.

She also said, “It is my opus and truly feels like a pin at the centre of the core of my artist.”

The Weeknd performs in February 2021 during the Super Bowl halftime show at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

    Photo: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

The Weeknd, ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ (XO/Republic)

Closing off the dramatic “After Hours” trilogy that he began nearly five years ago, the Weeknd is planning the release of his sixth studio album, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” on Jan. 24.

The project features guest appearances from artists like Playboi Carti and Anitta and is set to be accompanied by the psychological horror film of the same name starring the musician alongside “Wednesday” actress Jenna Ortega, “Saltburn” actor Barry Keoghan and more.

“This album represents the creative apex of the project,” text in the project’s trailer reads, also noting that it was “crafted with existential and self-referential themes.”

The R&B artist plans to celebrate the release of the album the night after it drops with a special concert at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl Stadium.

Central Cee is set to release his full-length debut, “Can’t Rush Greatness,” on Jan. 24.

    Photo: Matthew Baker/Getty Images

Central Cee, ‘Can’t Rush Greatness’ (Columbia)

Central Cee is ready to make his full-length debut after making waves for his rap collaborations and social media drama. The rapper, whose real name is Oakley Neil Caesar-Su, first rose to mainstream fame when his song “Doja” went viral on social media in 2022, though he had been releasing music for a few years prior.

Expected to release on Jan. 24, Central Cee’s new project, “Can’t Rush Greatness,” is said to feature guest producers and an appearance from fellow British rapper Dave, whom he collaborated with on the single “Sprinter” in 2023. Their collaboration ended up becoming the longest-running No. 1 rap song in the U.K., holding the position for 10 weeks.
