  • ‘Outlander’ star Sam Heughan loved going modern in ‘The Couple Next Door’

Fans of Outlander should prepare to see Sam Heughan in a completely new light.

Heughan, alongside an ensemble cast that also features Jessica De Gouw, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Alfred Enoch, leads new Starz drama The Couple Next Door. If you’re expecting a man the like the loyal, extremely monogamous, and moral-to-a-fault Jamie Fraser, well… don’t.

Instead, Heughan is playing Danny, a contemporary police officer who, with his wife Becka (De Gouw), leads a bit of an unconventional life via their open relationship. You’d never guess it from their outward suburban propriety, but when a new couple, Evie (Tomlinson) and Pete (Enoch), move in next door, their secrets start to spill out.

Or, as Enoch teases it, “You just want to know — ‘What bad decisions are these people making now and where will they end up?’ It had an atmosphere in the script, that slightly strange, psychosexual, thriller feeling of malaise. Just that sense that it looks good, but it feels off.”

For Heughan, the show, which premieres on Starz at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Jan. 17, is also a welcome shift from his beloved Jamie Fraser. “It was just a joy to do something completely different,” he tells Entertainment Weekly. “It was less time in the makeup chair — and throwing on a T-shirt and jeans is a lot more comfortable than the traditional kilt or jerkin that I normally wear. They each have their merits of course, and it is fun to do historical, but this was definitely a welcome change.”

But it’s not just the wardrobe that marks a stark change, it’s who Danny is as a man as well; he conceals nefarious dealings, money issues, and more from his wife. “Danny, on the surface, is one thing,” Heughan teases. “People will make assumptions about him. His new neighbors make assumptions about him. But I love a character that is ambiguous, and I love being surprised. I want an audience to think one thing of a character and then learn that there’s something else.”

Heughan and De Gouw also dug into their characters’ approach to sex, as Danny and Becka swap partners and invite other couples into their bed.

“A lot of my friends are in the queer community,” De Gouw explains of her exposure to polyamory. “Traditional, monogamous relationships are not necessarily the norm. In my life, I’m surrounded by different kinds of relationships. The expectation that you are two people living monogamously forever doesn’t necessarily exist in the queer community in the same way. So I feel like I had a bit of insight into that.”

Heughan notes that the non-traditional relationship also required even more specificity and homework between him and De Gouw when it came to building their on-screen romance. “We had to work out what that relationship is and to try and do justice and service to anyone that does have that kind of relationship,” he says. “Because it’s ultimately harder to be that open and that in love with your partner that you will test your comfort levels. It is, ultimately, the romance of the piece.”

Both De Gouw and Tomlinson also felt it essential to ensure their characters were driving the choices they were making in regards to their bodies and intimacy. “I felt a responsibility, particularly from Becka’s perspective,” De Gouw adds, “that we’re telling a story of someone who chooses this life, who is empowered by this life and who has thrived in this life. We meet [Becka and Danny] at a point of crisis, but it’s a different lifestyle that absolutely works and is valid.”

Adds Tomlinson: “Jessica and I really wanted to give the women some agency so that they pitched it to the boys. That really helped, and it gave them a bond that wasn’t necessarily on the page, which was exciting for us, and important for the women in the show to have that fun between them and then to be the ones that make that decision or suggest that decision.”

Heughan also found a fascinating paradox in the fact that Becka and Danny live in a neighborhood that represents the antithesis of their values. “It’s interesting that they’ve chosen to live in a very different world to what they’re privately living,” he reflects. “They’re in this quite formulaic society, this rule-driven world in suburbia. That’s also a key to Danny a little bit — that’s his upbringing and that’s the world that he feels more comfortable in.”

It’s that tension between their baser desires and the rigid structure of their suburban world that propels The Couple Next Door forward. “It’s so toxic,” says Enoch. “But there is something delicious about it.”

Fans of Sam Heughan, best known for his role as Jamie Fraser in the hit TV series Outlander, will be excited to hear that he is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of Shari Lapena’s novel The Couple Next Door.

In a recent interview, Heughan revealed that he loved the opportunity to play a modern character in the thriller, a departure from his usual historical roles. He plays the role of Marco, a husband who becomes entangled in a web of deception and betrayal when his baby daughter goes missing during a dinner party with his neighbors.

Heughan expressed his excitement for the project, stating that he enjoyed the challenge of portraying a character dealing with contemporary issues and relationships. Fans can expect to see a different side of Heughan as he navigates the twists and turns of this gripping thriller.

The Couple Next Door promises to be a thrilling adaptation of Lapena’s bestselling novel, and with Heughan’s talent and versatility, it is sure to be a must-watch for fans of both the book and the actor. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!

  • ‘The Couple Next Door’ Review: Starz’s Silly Polyamory Thriller

It takes less than five minutes for Starz and Channel 4‘s new six-part series The Couple Next Door to make its first reference to Desperate Housewives.

Pete (Alfred Enoch), a journalist at a struggling newspaper, and Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson), a pregnant primary school teacher, are moving into a cul-de-sac in Leeds. They’re reflecting on a version of suburbia that’s more American, or even fictional American, in nature than British, so the comparison is close to inevitable; Pete looks at the dog-walking, lawn-tending, externally obsessed neighborhood they’re moving into and assumes a communal beneath-the-surface rot that does, indeed, eventually emerge.

    The Couple Next Door

    The Bottom Line

PG-13 partner-swapping upstaged by silly thriller subplots.

    Airdate: Friday, January 17 (Starz)
Cast: Eleanor Tomlinson, Sam Heughan, Alfred Enoch, Hugh Dennis and Jessica De Gouw
    Creator: David Allison

It’s the last Desperate Housewives reference in the series because, to put it simply, The Couple Next Door isn’t finally all that much like Desperate Housewives, especially the top-tier early seasons of Desperate Housewives that one might want to be compared to. The adaptation of a Dutch format — Nieuwe Buren, which I definitely haven’t seen — offers very little humor and fails completely as a twisty, propulsive thriller, making its only appeal as an exploration of a modern polyamorous relationship, a thing it examines on a level far less sophisticated than what was featured in Starz’s Three Women.

And if you’re thinking, “But you didn’t like Three Women!” Indeed, I did not. Three Women was a well-acted structural failure, but it had things on its mind and an interesting take on female desire. The Couple Next Door avoids almost anything thoughtful, and as an erotic thriller, written and directed by men, its top gear stops at “hungry glances” as opposed to actual sexual provocation. Because its stars are inarguably attractive and capable of stirring up at least a modicum of chemistry, there are times when The Couple Next Door maybe lives up to its junk-food aspirations, but it’s mostly thin gruel.

Anyway, Evie and Pete move into their new hood and they’re immediately greeted warmly by the couple across the street — the show isn’t great with geography, but I’m pretty sure its title is inaccurate — Becka, a yoga instructor and VERY low-level social media influencer (Jessica De Gouw), and Danny (Sam Heughan), a motorcycle cop. Becka and Danny have a son when it’s dramatically convenient — I’ve never seen a show so casually eager to tell us when a child character is being watched by unseen relatives or staying over with unseen friends. But mostly they’re swingers and their interest in Evie, embodying what Eric Carmen described as “Hungry Eyes,” and Pete, uncomfortable with everything to the point of accidental comedy, quickly escalates.

When The Couple Next Door is just about these four very pretty people leering over each other and then making a mess of everything in wholly predictable ways, it has a sizzling competence. The actual sex scenes are barely PG-13 — imagine telling somebody a decade ago that the Starz of Spartacus and other blood-and-boobs epics would end up skimping on nudity and gratuitous boinking — but it’s easy to understand why these two couples would be curious. For Becka and Danny, it’s a lifestyle that comes with rules and ample experience. For Evie, the attraction is tied to childhood repression. And for Pete? Well, he’s uncomfortable. With everything.

Within the confines of this potential foursome, there are opportunities for psychological rigor, as well as chances to deal with issues including religious fundamentalism, male infertility and the gendering of romantic obsession. But writer David Allison and director Dries Vos just aren’t interested in making The Couple Next Door be deeply about the thing that it’s supposed to be about.

Instead, the six episodes are propped up by thriller elements that are all various degrees of shoddy. There’s a one-dimensional plotline involving neighbor Alan (Hugh Dennis), a creepy voyeur, and his long-suffering wife Jean (Kate Robbins), which comes close — not THAT close — to working because Dennis and Robbins are good, even if their characters are not. Danny, however, is embroiled in a dangerous situation with a corrupt local businessman that’s generally ludicrous, while Pete’s parallel investigation into that corruption case is consistently ludicrous. I think it might be possible to care a tiny bit about the stuff with the peeping neighbors, which is Rear Window without any of the nuance or style or purpose, but I lack the creativity to imagine an ideal viewer who might find the other thriller storylines anywhere close to compelling. There’s a lot of garbage in The Couple Next Door and by the fourth and fifth episodes, the garbage is steering the garbage truck.

Keeping the show watchable, at least until the violence-filled finale when it mostly is unwatchable, are the four main stars — including Enoch’s semi-comic turn that’s either unintentional or discordant with everything else in the series, but made me chuckle once or twice.

Bulked up to an almost Reacher-ian degree, Outlander star Heughan makes a strong case to join 50 Cent as Starz’s main poster boy. His mumbling, brooding presence has little hints of Stanley Kowalski magnetism and he has the only subplot that improves as the show progresses. Very little that De Gouw’s character does makes much sense — the logical flaws in almost everything become all-consuming by the end — but the Aussie actress is convincing enough to briefly make you believe that somebody with no interest in social media would be enjoying the fruits of being an influencer, and that somebody with only 30,000 followers would be notable as an influencer. Tomlinson is great for the first half of the season, as Evie goes through personal grief and comes out desperate and damaged. But as the show gets into late-series moralizing that was already retrograde back in the days of Fatal Attraction, anything grounded about that character gets lost.

Channel 4 has already ordered a second season of The Couple Next Door with a new cast, which points not to the finality of any of the story arcs in these six episodes, but the likely finality of viewer interest in those stories. So keep trying again with this partner-swapping stuff, Starz! Third time might be the charm.

“The Couple Next Door” Review: Starz’s Silly Polyamory Thriller

Starz’s new thriller series, “The Couple Next Door,” explores the complex dynamics of a polyamorous relationship between three neighbors. The show follows the lives of married couple Alex and Sarah, who find themselves drawn to their new neighbor, Mark, and soon become entangled in a steamy and dangerous love triangle.

The premise of “The Couple Next Door” is certainly intriguing, but unfortunately, the execution falls flat. The writing is clunky and melodramatic, with unrealistic dialogue and plot twists that feel forced and contrived. The characters are one-dimensional and lack depth, making it hard for viewers to truly care about their fates.

The performances from the cast are also lackluster, with wooden acting and little chemistry between the leads. The pacing of the show is uneven, with some episodes dragging on while others feel rushed and chaotic. Overall, “The Couple Next Door” fails to deliver on its promise of a thrilling and provocative exploration of polyamory.

While the concept of a polyamorous love triangle is ripe for compelling storytelling, “The Couple Next Door” misses the mark. Viewers looking for a more nuanced and realistic portrayal of polyamory may want to look elsewhere.

  • How old are Tyler and Gabby from TikTok? Age difference explored as ‘tallest couple’ on the platform announce break up

How old are Tyler and Gabby from TikTok? Age difference explored as ‘tallest couple’ on the platform announce break up

TikTok couple Tyler and Gabby have called it quits just seven months into their relationship. Tyler Bergantino and Gabby Gonzalez took to their respective accounts on the platform on Thursday, January 2, 2024, to announce their breakup.

“Gabby and I broke up, we had a lot of different beliefs,” Bergantino explained before adding, “The distance — not only physically but where we were at in our life — I think just ended up being too much, (and) that’s okay.”

According to a report by Swoon.com, many fans of the internet personality believe Tyler could be referencing their age difference of 10 years (Tyler is 31 while Gabby is 21). Gonzalez, for her part, noted:

“I need to make this video before I can close out this chapter of my life because we did choose to make our relationship extremely public… I wish him nothing but the best. He’s just not my person and I am not his.”

Tyler and Gabby went viral in early June 2024 when they appeared together for a man-on-the-street interview in Miami, Florida. The conversation centered around their heights—Tyler is 6’9″, while Gabby is 6’1″. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice their chemistry. By the end of the month, the pair announced their relationship.

Tyler and Gabby’s first date was at a Justin Timberlake concert

In her announcement video, Gabby Gonzalez thanked her fans for being accepting of their relationship, noting that she and Tyler Bergantino were initially skeptical of going public about their relationship.

In his announcement, Tyler told his followers that despite things not working out for them, this didn’t mean “random encounters” leading to “love” didn’t exist. Both Tyler and Gabby wished each other the best for their respective futures.

Tyler and Gabby were unofficially dubbed as the tallest couple on TikTok. Tyler was the first to go public about their relationship in a 4-minute-long video. Per a June 2024 article by Dextro, he explained that their first date was at a Justin Timberlake concert.

While initially, the couple shared content surrounding their relationship and milestones, by July, the couple had started a podcast titled Gabby and Tyler’s Unnamed Podcast. During the first episode, Gabby spoke about meeting Tyler and going viral online, calling it a “miraculous blessing.”

“What a lot of people don’t understand is yeah, it’s amazing that (everything’s) blown up and hitting a million likes is great, but I found someone that I see as a life partner through all this.”

Bergantino agreed, adding it felt “epic.

During the podcast, Tyler and Gabby discussed how their relationship differed from their past romances, something the pair had previously kept private.

Bergantino explained that this was the first time he went public with his love life, as it was hard for his partners to deal with “attention and stuff,” adding that “too much could get caught in the crossfire.” Gonzalez continued that in their case:

“We don’t care about the attention. It’s accessible and it’s been there. Before all this we both had somewhat of a following. We both understood social media and the attention.”

Tyler and Gabby explained that working together helped them build a “deeper connection.”

The couple has not shared any other updates.
