FILE – Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen receives a briefing during a visit to the Financial Crimes … [+] Enforcement Network (FinCEN) in Vienna, Va., Jan. 8, 2024. The National Small Business Association has won a court challenge against the Corporate Transparency Act, a law designed to combat money laundering. A federal court in Alabama on Friday ruled the legislation unconstitutional. In a pivotal decision on January 23, 2025, the Supreme Court granted the government’s motion to stay a nationwide injunction issued by a federal judge in Texas in the case of Texas Top Cop Shop, Inc. v. McHenry. This injunction initially sought to halt the enforcement of beneficial ownership reporting requirements mandated by the Corporate Transparency Act, which is overseen by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).
Justice Gorsuch, concurring with the decision to grant the stay, proposed that the Supreme Court should clarify whether district courts have the authority to issue universal injunctive relief. This aligns with Justice Gorsuch’s previous views expressed in Labrador v. Poe and Department of Homeland Security v. New York, where he advocated for a more definitive resolution on the scope of district courts’ powers.
However, not all justices agreed. Justice Jackson dissented, arguing that the emergency relief was unwarranted, as the government did not demonstrate sufficient urgency. She noted that the Fifth Circuit had expedited the consideration of the Government’s appeal, questioning the necessity of the Supreme Court’s intervention at this stage.
The timeline of the case began with the initial injunction issued by a federal judge in Texas, which aimed to halt the enforcement of the beneficial ownership reporting requirements under the Corporate Transparency Act, as seen in Texas Top Cop Shop, Inc. v. McHenry. Following this, on January 23, 2025, the Supreme Court stayed this injunction, potentially allowing the requirements to be enforced unless further legal decisions intervene.
Despite the Supreme Court’s decision in Texas Top Cop Shop, FinCEN’s requirements are currently on hold due to a separate injunction issued by another federal judge in Texas in the case of Smith v. U.S. Department of the Treasury. As a result, reporting companies are not currently obligated to file beneficial ownership information with FinCEN. There are no liabilities for failing to file this information if the Smith order is in effect. However, companies have the option to voluntarily submit beneficial ownership information reports if they choose.
If the Supreme Court ultimately overturns the District Court’s ruling, it will likely reinstate the enforcement of the beneficial ownership reporting requirements, compelling companies to comply promptly. This would mark a significant shift in regulatory enforcement, requiring businesses to gather and submit the necessary information immediately. Conversely, if the Supreme Court upholds the District Court’s ruling, the injunction will remain in effect, continuing the pause on enforcement and allowing companies to delay compliance. This would maintain the current legal landscape, offering businesses a temporary reprieve from these reporting obligations while broader legal issues surrounding district courts’ powers are further clarified.
The ongoing legal proceedings underscore the complex interplay between judicial decisions and regulatory enforcement. For businesses, the current environment offers a temporary reprieve from compliance with beneficial ownership reporting requirements yet suggests potential future changes depending on the outcomes of ongoing appeals and legal challenges.
We recommend that clients either file voluntarily or collect Beneficial Ownership Information and provide it to the Reporting Company, enabling them to file the required information promptly once a final decision is reached.
Despite the recent stay issued by the Supreme Court, the California Transparency Act (CTA) does not require any reporting. The CTA, which was passed in 2020, aimed to increase transparency and accountability in government spending by requiring certain entities to report their financial transactions.
However, the Supreme Court recently issued a stay on the enforcement of the reporting requirements, citing concerns about the potential burden on businesses and privacy concerns. As a result, no reporting is currently required for the CTA.
While this may come as a relief to some businesses, advocates for transparency and accountability are urging lawmakers to find a balance between these concerns and the need for transparency in government spending. Stay tuned for further developments on this issue.
LE CHESNAY, France — Victor Wembanyama stood on the center stripe of a new outdoor court in his hometown, his arms outstretched to their full 8-foot wingspan as he posed for a slew of photographers.
He could not have seemed happier.
Wembanyama unveiled a gift of sorts to his hometown and the next generation on Tuesday, a pair of outdoor courts — one for 5-on-5 play, the other for 3-on-3 play — that were built to the specifications that he wanted and sketched out himself.
“For those of you that don’t know, this started in a room with an idea,” San Antonio general manager Brian Wright said, as about five dozen kids sat on the court in front of him and another 100 or so people watched from adjacent courtside seating. “And I remember watching Victor going on a whiteboard and literally drawing every single detail of the court that you see today and putting his heart and soul into designing this court for the children to play on. It speaks to how special you are and how special this is to you, so thank you, Victor.”
Wembanyama and the Spurs are in France this week, playing a pair of games Thursday and Saturday in Paris against the Indiana Pacers. France is Wembanyama’s homeland, as everyone knows. And it’s often assumed that he’s from Paris, but he’s from Le Chesnay — about 12 miles (20 kilometers) west of the city.
It was important to him to make this happen in time for the Spurs’ visit there. Others did not think that was realistic.
“Impossible,” said Le Chesnay’s mayor, Richard Delepierre.
The challenges were many: There were old courts in that space to excavate, designs to be approved, it’s not great weather for construction at this time of year and, if all that weren’t enough, building anything so close to the Palace of Versailles seems to be a bit of a logistical headache, to say the least.
But it’s what Wemby wanted. And that makes things happen, especially in his hometown.
“Beyond his immense basketball talents, it seems that Victor possesses great qualities of art and a certain capacity for persuasion,” Delepierre said.
Construction really got going just a couple months ago. But on Tuesday, on a chilly afternoon, it was finished. The new nets were in place, the fibers still tight together as if to show not a single shot had gone through them yet. The kids peeled back a black drape to show off the center court design — a nod to both the Spurs’ logo and the Le Chesnay clock tower — and Wembanyama caught a lob for the ceremonial first dunk.
“It was my dream also to have these kind of courts when I was living here,” Wembanyama said.
Le Chesnay is a small city of about 30,000, a little west of downtown Paris. From town hall there’s a view of the Palace of Versailles, the home King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette shared in the late 18th century before he was beheaded during the French Revolution. Local legend suggests Napoleon roamed the area at times, even ordering that trees be planted to line the streets a certain way.
It is also where Wembanyama’s basketball life began to grow.
Local officials say the majority of residents there — the Chesnaycourtois and Chesnaycourtoise — take part in some sort of sporting activity. Wembanyama created a bit of a stir in town when he brought friends in for an impromptu pickup soccer match last year, some of them roaming the same field that they did as little kids. Handball is extremely popular there, as are auto racing and equestrian. There even was a filly named Le Chesnay that raced at the famed Saratoga Race Course in 2009.
But, officially or unofficially, it’s a basketball town now. Kids are playing the game all the time in Le Chesnay, most of them — as one would guess — wearing Spurs jerseys or T-shirts. Wembanyama’s 6-foot-3 mother, Elodie de Fautereau, was a standout player and became a coach.
“The Spurs’ ‘Play Paris’ initiative isn’t just about building a court, it’s about creating a vibrant hub for the community that honors Victor’s journey and his commitment to giving back,” said RC Buford, CEO of Spurs Sports and Entertainment. “This renovated space will hopefully inspire the next generation and showcase the power of sports to bring people together.”
The Spurs haven’t said what they spent on the project, but it was a “significant” part of the estimated $500,000 budget, Delepierre said. It’s also important to note that the courts aren’t some Wembanyama tribute; the city logo and the Spurs logo are present, but nothing that screams the 2023-24 NBA rookie of the year’s name.
He didn’t want them to be about him. And they got done just in time.
“Impossible,” Delepierre said, taking back his previous declaration, “is not French.”
Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama, the French basketball prodigy, recently unveiled a pair of state-of-the-art basketball courts in his hometown of Le Mans, France. The towering 7-foot-2 center, who was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2023 NBA Draft, wanted to give back to the community that supported him throughout his journey to the NBA.
The courts, which feature vibrant colors and high-quality playing surfaces, will provide local youth with a safe and welcoming space to hone their basketball skills and stay active. Wembanyama hopes that the new courts will inspire the next generation of young athletes to dream big and chase their goals, just like he did.
In a statement, Wembanyama expressed his gratitude to his hometown and emphasized the importance of giving back to the community. “I am so grateful for the support I received from the people of Le Mans, and I wanted to give back in a meaningful way,” said Wembanyama. “I hope that these courts will serve as a place for young players to come together, have fun, and work hard to achieve their dreams.”
The unveiling of the courts was met with excitement and gratitude from the local community, who see Wembanyama as a role model and inspiration for aspiring basketball players. The gesture further solidifies Wembanyama’s commitment to making a positive impact both on and off the court.
Overall, the unveiling of the courts showcases Wembanyama’s dedication to his roots and his desire to uplift his community through the power of basketball. With his talent, generosity, and passion for giving back, Wembanyama is not only a rising star in the NBA but also a true ambassador for the sport and for his hometown.
Allegheny County Common Pleas Courts will be closed again Wednesday, as will Pittsburgh Municipal Court, due to severe and hazardous cold weather conditions, court officials said
For the second day in a row, President Judge Susan Evashavik DiLucente has ordered the closure of all divisions of the county Common Pleas Court and all Magisterial District Courts, as well as the municipal court, according to a statement Tuesday.
Arraignment Court, however, will remain open for those proceedings. Emergency protection-from-abuse orders can be obtained at Arraignment Court, 600 First Avenue, Downtown.
Allegheny County offices also will be partially closed, and non-essential county employees equipped with technology to work at home will be expected to do so, county officials said.
Also Wednesday, schools throughout the region will hold classes online or suspend school altogether as a polar vortex continues to bring single-digit temperatures.
Students at Pittsburgh Public Schools again will follow their regular class schedules for remote, synchronous learning Wednesday. The district has canceled all transportation, and staff will work remotely.
The National Weather Service has issued a cold-weather advisory for Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, east-central Ohio and northern West Virginia due to low temperatures and below-zero wind-chill temperatures.
Along with the cold, we are watching for scattered snow showers arriving this afternoon that could cause locally hazardous travel conditions. Remain alert for quick drops in visibility and quick road accumulation that could lead to slick driving. In ice and snow, take it slow! pic.twitter.com/m6Z1h6pTYZ
The NWS forecast for Wednesday calls for scattered snow showers between 3-8 p.m. with about a half-inch of accumulation. The weather service predicts a high temperature of 13 degrees and wind-chill temperatures as low as -14 degrees.
The high temperature for Wednesday is expected to hit 12 degrees, with wind-chill values as low as -16 degrees, before falling to a low of 4 degrees at night.
Wind chills from 15 to 20 degrees below zero are dangerously low, causing frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes and hypothermia with prolonged exposure, the NWS said in its advisory.
People who must go outside are urged to use caution and wear appropriate clothing, including hats and gloves. Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible, the NWS said.
Temperatures in the region are expected to rise somewhat Thursday, with a high of 26 degrees and a low Thursday night around 15 degrees, according to the weather service.
Jillian Forstadt of WESA contributed to this report.
Allegheny County courts, many schools to close again Wednesday due to cold weather
Due to the frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chills forecasted for Wednesday, many schools and courts in Allegheny County will be closed once again. The extreme cold poses a significant risk to students, staff, and residents, prompting officials to prioritize safety and well-being.
Parents are encouraged to stay updated on school closures and delays through their school district’s communication channels. Additionally, individuals with court appearances scheduled for Wednesday are advised to contact the appropriate courthouse for further instructions.
While the closures may disrupt schedules and routines, the safety of students and employees remains the top priority. It is important for everyone to take precautions in this severe weather and stay warm indoors. Stay safe, stay warm, and stay informed.
NBC’s Night Court is about to get a massive boost from guest star Gilles Marini, whose character Rodrigo has swept Julianne off her feet. But in real life, it’s the other way around; the Days of Our Lives actor was thrilled to get the call to appear on the hit sitcom! Speaking with CBR before his appearance in the Jan. 21 episode, Marini revealed why he’s such a fan of Night Court and in particular, Wendie Malick.
Marini dished on working with Malick and original Night Court cast member John Larroquette in “The Jakeout,” in which Malick’s character Julianne is determined to prove she doesn’t have feelings for Dan Fielding. Rodrigo may have something to say about that! In addition, the Daredevil alum spoke about his experience on the Netflix series ahead of the character’s highly anticipated Disney+ return.
CBR: You’ve appeared in plenty of TV sitcoms and comedy-dramas over your career, including Modern Family and Devious Maids. What was it about the Night Court revival that appealed to you?
Gilles Marini: The writing was just so spectacular, when it comes down to creating someone that is a little bit open to do anything for anyone for a little bit of money. And partnering with Wendie Malick was the icing on the cake. The moment I heard they really want you for Night Court, to play with Wendie Malick, I lost it. I’m like, I don’t need to be paid. [Laughs.] This is amazing. It’s one of my favorite [people] in the world. And partnering with her one more time was amazing.
The whole plot of “The Jakeout” revolves around her character Julianne and her relationship with your character Rodrigo. So how did you bring your off-screen chemistry to that on-screen relationship?
The Night Court reboot is returning for a third season this fall on NBC. With one actor’s departure, a fresh face will join the cast.
it’s always much easier to have a great relationship off-screen — then you can just play around when you’re filming. But with Wendie, you can see the difference. We were laughing at the table about something, and we’re hearing okay, we’ve got to go now, and we become these people, And this woman is such a different level of class when it comes to acting. I absolutely adore it. You can see the difference [in] the way she handles herself, and the way immediately makes everybody around say okay, now it’s game time.
I feel like it’s always like an acting crash course. You learn so much with Wendie. It doesn’t matter if you spend five minutes on set with her or five hours, you want to learn a lot of things with her. The [Night Court] cast was so easy to work with. It’s one of those jobs that you want to stay… [That] doesn’t happen all the time when you work. You’re happy to come in and out, but this is one of those shows that you really want to be part of, because the people are absolutely amazing. You’re happy to go to work. I was always earlier, I left later, It was a great time.
Yet it’s not just Wendie that you get to work with; the plot also means you share scenes with John Larroquette, who is a comedy icon. How would you describe what you learned from him?
John is so incredibly ready for everything. When John speaks, you know that he thought about it many times over. And he’s very, very good at what he does. Super-sweet man. We spent two days talking about everything and nothing and just being a normal human being, and I love that about the guy. He’s really serious. He’s this giant man who’s done so much. So it was really interesting for me to look up at someone that, you want to [be] like that when you get older.
What was your favorite scene from this episode of Night Court?
Night Court guest star Ryan Hansen tells CBR about Jake’s unexpected return in Season 3 of the NBC revival. Will the show reveal if Dan is Jake’s dad?
It is not even me in the scene. Ryan [Hansen] plays Jake… and Melissa [Rauch], of course, plays Abby. What I saw live was incredible. The dancing, the acting, the comedic timing — I was in awe by it. And everything they shot prior, I was there looking at it. It was very special and you could tell these are really good actors and they really know what they’re doing. I love that moment the most, when they start dancing. I think it’s one of the funniest episodes they had this [season]. I’m very excited to see it.
I really do love the show, and I hope that the network is going to give all the chance possible to keep it, because it’s my Tuesday love. I absolutely love [watching] this and it’s fun as hell. I want to see what’s up for a lot of storylines that they’re creating now and I’m really hoping for the show to live a long, long, long, long time more.
One of the quirks of your career is that when you’re not doing these big sitcoms like Night Court, you’ve done some pretty serious dramas, such as Teen Wolf and Netflix’s Daredevil. What’s the bigger challenge for you, comedy or drama?
Image via NBC
Comedy is a hundred times harder than drama. I’m just going to say it. Not only for me, most people I know, the stand-up comedy will be the hardest and then comedy and then everything else, you know. But when you do comedy, you need to be so in the place of relaxation and you need to accept the openness of what can be funny and let it be.
I do love comedy because I realize that, especially when I did 2 Broke Girls, my accents and my ways are funny for Americans generally. So most producers, they realize, oh, we can use this world, this foundation. We make fun of this and that. So you just have to be sharp, and less is more in comedy. You’ve got to be super-honest.
Daredevil actor Charlie Cox reveals that he has no interest in giving up the role of the Man Without Fear.
When I want to just kill this beautiful woman. [Laughs.] Daredevil was something — it was very dark. It was not even light on set. When we were shooting Daredevil, I was saying, where do we put the lights? They had no lights on set and they were just like, don’t worry, editing will do it. And it gives that vibe of the show that is dangerous and dark, and I loved it.
Sometimes it’s all that flamboyance and comedy and next thing you know, you do something very deep and serious. And [it’s] the reason that we are actors. I love challenges and I embrace them… The moment I hear rolling, I don’t care what it is, but I will become that person and we love doing so. I cannot live without acting.

Night Court fans, get ready for a special treat! Gilles Marini, who plays the charming and handsome prosecutor on the beloved sitcom, recently dished on his co-star Wendie Malick in a new interview.
Marini had nothing but praise for Malick, who plays the no-nonsense judge on the show. He described her as a talented and dedicated actress, always bringing her A-game to set and helping to elevate the performances of everyone around her.
But it’s not just Malick’s acting skills that Marini admires. He also spoke highly of her off-screen demeanor, describing her as warm, funny, and incredibly kind. According to Marini, Malick has a great sense of humor and is always quick with a joke or a smile, making her a joy to work with.
Fans of Night Court can look forward to seeing more of Marini and Malick’s dynamic on-screen partnership as the series continues to air. And with Marini’s glowing endorsement, it’s clear that the chemistry between these two talented actors is as strong behind the scenes as it is in front of the camera.

Venus Williams, who has played sparingly in recent years due to injuries and age, participated in just two tournaments in 2024—Indian Wells and the Miami Open—both resulting in first-round exits.
Despite the limited action, the 44-year-old confirmed in an interview with The Irish News that she is not planning to retire anytime soon. She expressed her intention to carefully select future tournaments, hinting at a potential comeback on her own terms.
“I’m not done with the racket yet… At this point, it’s about picking and choosing places I want to be. Last year I really wanted to play in Miami – home – because I hadn’t played there in like five years,” Venus Williams said.
“It’s nice to be in a place where I can pick and choose, but my game is always at a high level. Even if I’m not on tour, I always keep my game quite high,” she added.
When asked about what makes her feel amazing as she continues to work out, train, and plan a return to the court, Williams responded by emphasizing the importance of self-care. She shared that her focus is on taking the time to breathe.
“You know, taking care of myself—that’s so important….I think we were talking before like how how busy we are. But taking those moments to just breathe, take care of yourself. Whether that’s moving, how you think, how you eat? So that’s like what I’m prioritizing these days,” Williams said.
The 2025 season is underway and the first Major of the year, the Australian Open, is already in its second week. There are no signs of Williams making a return yet. However as she has uploaded her training images, a potential return may be on the cards soon.

Separate ethics complaints filed by members of Congress and an advocacy group against Justices Clarence Thomas and Ketanji Brown Jackson will not be referred to the Justice Department, federal court officials announced.
The U.S. Judicial Conference said Thomas has agreed to follow updated guidelines on listing free private travel and gifts from friends, following previous reporting on undisclosed hospitality.
For her part, Jackson has amended her financial disclosures following complaints about her husband’s consulting income as a physician.
Democratic Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), along with Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA), had asked for an investigation by the judiciary itself into undisclosed hospitality provided to Thomas by billionaire friend Harland Crow. ProPublica reported on several instances of private travel and lodging over the years.
Judge Robert Conrad, who heads the judicial conference policymaking body, said in letters to the lawmakers that Thomas had filed amended financial disclosures “that address several issues identified in your letter.”
Additionally, Conrad said that it was not clear whether the judiciary itself could make criminal referrals against a sitting Supreme Court member.
“Because the Judicial Conference does not superintend the Supreme Court and because any effort to grant the Conference such authority would raise serious constitutional questions, one would expect Congress at a minimum to state any such directive clearly. But no such express directive appears in this provision,” Conrad said.

Conrad noted that Whitehouse and Wyden had separately asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to name a special counsel to investigate then-former President Donald Trump. Garland has not acted yet on that request.
Whitehouse, in a statement, criticized the Judicial Conference’s decision.
“By all appearances, the judicial branch is shirking its statutory duty to hold a Supreme Court justice accountable for ethics violations,” said Whitehouse.
The complaint filed against Jackson came from Citizens for Renewing America, led by Russ Vought, who was nominated by President-elect Trump to lead the Office of Management and Budget.
Questions over ethics, including unreported private travel by some justices, have led the court to adopt its first code of ethics last year.
United States Supreme Court (front row L-R) Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts, Associate Justice Samuel Alito, and Associate Justice Elena Kagan, (back row L-R) Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett, Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch, Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson pose for their official portrait at the East Conference Room of the Supreme Court building on October 7, 2022 in Washington, DC. However, compliance is left to each of the nine justices, leading to concerns the court is not taking its own ethics enforcement standards seriously.
A two-year investigation by Senate Democrats released last week found additional luxury travel by Justice Thomas in 2021 was not noted on his annual financial disclosure form.
Fix the Court, a group which advocates for greater judicial transparency, urged Congress to act.
“The Conference’s letters further underscore the need for Congress to create a new and transparent mechanism to investigate the justices for ethics violations since the Conference is unwilling to act upon the one method we had presumed existed to do that,” said Executive Director Gabe Roth.

Recently, the Federal courts have announced that they will not be making criminal referrals to the Department of Justice (DOJ) over separate ethics complaints against Justice Clarence Thomas. This decision comes after multiple complaints were filed against Justice Thomas, alleging that he failed to disclose his wife’s income from conservative political organizations on financial disclosure forms.
Despite these complaints, the Federal courts have determined that there is not enough evidence to warrant criminal referrals to the DOJ. This decision has sparked debate and controversy among legal experts and the public, with some arguing that Justice Thomas should be held accountable for any potential ethical violations.
It remains to be seen how this decision will impact Justice Thomas and his reputation on the Supreme Court. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
