Dallas Cowboys promote offensive assistant Steve Shimko to QB coach
The Dallas Cowboys filled out the offensive side of their coaching staff on Monday, keeping continuity and the goal of getting the best football out of quarterback Dak Prescott in mind through the entire process. The decision as to who will actually be in the quarterbacks room with Prescott comes after Dallas already added former Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey as an analyst. Instead of Dorsey, it will be an internal promotion for current analyst Steve Shimko.
Steve Shimko will become the Cowboys’ QBs coach, according to a source. He was an offensive assistant last year but replaces Scott Tolzien now. He worked with Brian Schottenheimer for two years in Seattle. He was the OC at Boston College in 2023.
— Todd Archer (@toddarcher) February 11, 2025
Shimko replaces a carryover from Mike McCarthy’s staff who also worked his way up from offensive assistant to quarterbacks coach in Scott Tolzien. The former Packers QB was Prescott’s QB coach over the last two seasons. Clearly, the Cowboys value closeness and familiarity as things Prescott has highlighted as important himself, yet still allowed new head coach Brian Schottenheimer to have his say in promoting a coach with ties to his days in Seattle. In Schottenheimer’s first season as offensive coordinator for the Seahawks in 2018, Shimko was a first time NFL coach as an analyst. That Seahawks team went 10-6 and lost in the Wild Card round to the Cowboys, Prescott’s first career playoff victory.
Shimko entered the ranks of professional football after lower level stops at Rutgers, Western Michigan, and JUCO Garden City, but did have a stop in the SEC at Georgia as a graduate assistant in 2015.
Shimko served as assistant quarterbacks coach in his second season with the Seahawks, seeing the benefit of staying at a stop long enough to be promoted. Current Panthers head coach Dave Canales was the QB coach he worked under. Shimko returned to college after the 2019 season, and again stuck at Boston College long enough to go from tight ends coach to quarterbacks in 2022 and offensive coordinator/quarterback coach in 2023.

The BC Eagles ranked top 15 in the country in rushing attempts and yards per game in 2023 with Shimko as OC and QB coach. His résumé checks all of the boxes of being a scheme and philosophy fit in what the Cowboys under Schottenheimer are looking to accomplish.
The overall youth of the Cowboys new staff has been pointed out by many as a potential positive when it comes to not only introducing new ideas, but helping this team create a new culture and identity where everything is earned. The Cowboys must find ways to show any complacency that led to a 7-10 regression out of the playoffs is on its way out of The Star.
Brian Schottenheimer’s first staff as head coach of the Cowboys has come together quickly, and for now shows a level of coherency on the football side of things this franchise has been lacking. As for how it will translate into on-field success, the best that can be said here is that all 32 fanbases are now playing the same waiting game Dallas is following the Eagles Super Bowl win.
The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant coaching move, promoting offensive assistant Steve Shimko to the role of quarterback coach. Shimko, who has been with the Cowboys since 2018, has proven himself as a valuable asset to the team’s offensive staff. In his new role, Shimko will be responsible for working closely with the quarterbacks, including star player Dak Prescott, to help develop their skills and improve their performance on the field. With his experience and knowledge of the game, Shimko is expected to make a positive impact on the team’s offense.
This promotion comes at a critical time for the Cowboys, as they look to bounce back from a disappointing season and make a strong push for the playoffs. With Shimko now leading the quarterbacks, the team is hopeful that his guidance and expertise will help elevate their game to the next level.
Cowboys fans are excited to see what Shimko will bring to the table as the new quarterback coach and are hopeful that his promotion will help lead the team to success in the upcoming season.

#Dallas #Cowboys #promote #offensive #assistant #Steve #Shimko #coachJerry Jones says it’s ‘a shocker’ Cowboys not in this year’s Super Bowl: ‘I wouldn’t have signed Dak Prescott’
The Dallas Cowboys didn’t have a very good year, to say the least. Jerry Jones, the team’s owner and general manager, said during the offseason the team would be “all in” on 2024, and then promptly failed to follow up with that promise in free agency. Dak Prescott got hurt, the Cowboys stumbled to a 7-10 season and watched Mike McCarthy walk away after an awkward contract situation.
They’ve since promoted Brian Schotteheimer from OC to head coach — easily the least inspiring hire of the 2025 coaching cycle — a move that served as a clear sign of what Jerry Jones values most about his organization. Which makes it really surprising to find out he thinks it’s “a shocker” the Cowboys aren’t playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Yet that’s what Jerry Jones said during an interview with The Athletic’s Dianna Russini during Super Bowl week from what appears to be the NFL Honors red carpet, while also talking about taking “some pretty serious risks on talent.”
“I wouldn’t have signed Dak Prescott, the highest-paid player in the NFL, if now wasn’t when when we wanted to win. This is a shocker to be here at this Super Bowl and not have the Cowboys here,” Jones said. “I didn’t plan on that when I made that agreement with him. So we’re going to do everything we can to get there.”
Cowboys’ Jerry Jones feels 2025 free agency will ‘be in line’ with past years, Micah Parsons deal is priority
Garrett Podell
Jones was smiling a little bit when he said what he said, but surely even the biggest optimist in the world didn’t expect the Cowboys to be playing in the Super Bowl this year. Some idiots (hand up, guilty as charged) picked them to be a playoff team, which wouldn’t have been that crazy considering McCarthy won 12 games for three straight years preceding 2024.
Still, the red flags were there and they were loud: The Cowboys offensive line has dealt with age and attrition, Jerry cheaped out on paying Derrick Henry and didn’t add anything of substance to the run game, and when defensive coordinator Dan Quinn walked out the door Jones should have worried way more about the defense, since it wasn’t very good before Quinn got there, either.
Now the Cowboys are doing a full-scale reboot and yet are planning to handle things with a similar approach this offseason. Jones said he expects the 2025 offseason to “be in line” with previous years and the team will largely focus on getting a new deal for superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons.
If that’s actually true, it means we won’t see the Cowboys be very active in free agency and they’ll wait until the last possible minute to figure out a deal with Parsons, while letting the market push the price up for them instead of acting sooner.
Should things unfold in a similar fashion to last offseason, it absolutely will not be a shocker to see the Cowboys sitting at home when Super Bowl LX is played this time next year, just like every single season since 1996.
In a recent interview, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed his disappointment in his team not making it to this year’s Super Bowl. Jones described it as “a shocker” and admitted that he had high expectations for the Cowboys this season.Jones went on to say that if he had known the Cowboys wouldn’t make it to the Super Bowl, he wouldn’t have signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a lucrative contract extension. This statement has caused quite a stir among Cowboys fans, who have been divided in their opinions on Prescott’s performance this season.
Despite the disappointment, Jones remains optimistic about the future of the Cowboys and is determined to make the necessary changes to ensure they are contenders in the upcoming seasons. Only time will tell if Jones’ decision to sign Prescott was the right one, but one thing is for sure – the pressure is on for the Cowboys to prove themselves next season.

Aztecs take on deep-shooting Cowboys at Viejas Arena – San Diego Union-Tribune
SDSU vs. Wyoming
When: 5 p.m. Saturday
Where: Viejas Arena
On the air: CBS Sports Network; 760-AM
Records: SDSU is 14-5 (7-3); Wyoming is 11-10 (4-6)
Series history: SDSU leads 51-41, winning 11 straight overall and 16 straight at Viejas Arena. The last home loss came in 2007, when Wyoming scored a basket with 4.9 seconds left to win 66-65. They met only once last season, an 81-65 Aztecs win in San Diego.
Aztecs update: They get a much-needed bye after this and an extra week for starting center Jared Coleman-Jones to heal his injured shoulder. Coleman-Jones missed two weeks of preseason practice in October when the shoulder popped out. It happened again at Nevada last Saturday, and the 6-foot-10 senior sat out Tuesday’s nervy 71-68 home win against San Jose State (which dropped the Aztecs five spots in the Kenpom metric to 42nd). Coach Brian Dutcher said he’ll be a game-time decision, although there is some thought to not pushing it with the bye ahead. Sophomore Miles Heide started in his place Tuesday. The Aztecs continue to struggle at Viejas Arena: They have already lost three times this season after going 70-6 over the previous five. In addition, they trailed 20-8 against Air Force and 33-12 against San Jose State before rallying. With another win, Dutcher will become the fourth coach in Mountain West history with 100 conference victories. The others: Steve Fisher (168), Boise State’s Leon Rice (159) and Steve Alford (128) with New Mexico and Nevada. Ted Leitner, in his final season as SDSU’s radio commentator, will be honored in a halftime ceremony that will include more than a dozen former players.
Cowboys update: They have outperformed expectations under first-year coach Sundance Wicks, who grew up in the state and was a former assistant. They have wins against Nevada at home and UNLV away, and the losses include a near miss against New Mexico. The star is Obi Agbim, a 6-3 senior guard who spent one year at a junior college and three in Division II. He averages 18.1 points per game, second in the Mountain West behind New Mexico guard Donovan Dent (19.6), and leads the conference (and is fourth nationally) in 3-point accuracy at 47.0%. The next highest scorers are senior guards Jordan Nesbitt (8.6 ppg) and Cody Newton (8.4 ppg), who both come off the bench. The Cowboys prefer a deliberate tempo, probing multiple sides of the floor deep into the shot clock. They rank 354th nationally in average possession length at 19.8 seconds. In conference games, they’re averaging 63.6 points per game; only 0-10 Air Force scores less at 60.1. The Cowboys can, however, get hot from deep; they made 17 3-pointers in Tuesday’s 83-72 overtime win against Fresno State. That brings shudders to Dutcher, whose team just surrendered 15 3s against San Jose State, the most by an SDSU team in a Mountain West game. Wyoming is 183rd in Kenpom, which projects a 71-55 Aztecs win.
Next up: Feb. 8 at Colorado State (7 p.m. PST, CBSSN)
–MARK ZEIGLER
The Aztecs are gearing up to face off against the deep-shooting Cowboys in a highly anticipated matchup at Viejas Arena. With both teams coming off strong performances, it’s sure to be a thrilling game that fans won’t want to miss. The Aztecs have been on a hot streak lately, showcasing their strong defense and potent offense. Led by star players like Matt Mitchell and Jordan Schakel, they will look to continue their winning ways and defend their home court against the Cowboys.
On the other side, the Cowboys have been lighting it up from beyond the arc, with sharpshooters like Marcus Williams leading the charge. Their ability to knock down threes at a high rate could pose a challenge for the Aztecs’ defense, making for an exciting and high-scoring affair.
As both teams battle it out on the court, fans can expect a fast-paced and competitive game that will keep them on the edge of their seats. Be sure to tune in and support the Aztecs as they take on the Cowboys in what promises to be a thrilling showdown at Viejas Arena.

2025 Shrine Bowl standouts that make sense for the Cowboys
FRISCO, Texas — The common misconception is that the future is what simply happens next and, while that’s true, the deeper truth is that the future is, actually, constantly and perpetually becoming the present — the latter converting to the former every instant — and it’s best the Dallas Cowboys keep this in mind as they work to do multiple things at the same time.
In other words, the next word you read in this sentence was in the future until you read it, making it your current present, and this will continue until you reach the end of this column.
See, it’s still happening. Fun, isn’t it?
And with the dust is quickly settling for the Cowboys’ coaching staff following the biggest domino having fallen, namely Brian Schottenheimer being named as head coach for 2025 and beyond — both the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Bowl effectively kicking off draft season.
The latter got underway at the home of the Cowboys, no less, bringing a total of 142 draft prospects to AT&T STadium and though the 25-0 shutout victory by the East over the West wasn’t exactly a carnival ride, it did provide a clear-and-present opportunity at assessing future talent in the now.
Several stood out, and several others were interstellar.
With a shiny and well-deserved five-year contract under the arm of scouting guru Will McClay, the Cowboys hope to still be pioneers in the NFL draft going forward, and the hope is that they have barely begun, but their greatest accomplishments cannot be behind them, because their destiny lies above them.
So, which standouts from the Shrine Bowl might become their next step toward a postseason destiny?
Glad you asked, because the future is right now, and here are the ones that make the most sense at positions of need in Dallas to help launch the Schottenheimer era into orbit.
[Note: All height measurements are rounded to the nearest inch.]
Quarterback
- Brady Cook, Missouri (6’2 “, 209 lbs)
- Cam Miller, North Dakota State (6’1″, 210 lbs)
To be frank, neither Cook nor Cam Miller really floored me, and I’ll spare you my review of Max Brosmer and Ethan Garbers, because it isn’t pretty. Not that things were stupendous for the starting quarterbacks, but there were at least some positive takeaways hiding within the mayhem of botched snaps and lost fumbles.
Cook showed an ability to make top-shelf throws when given time to do so, evidenced in the exceptional placement on an early ball down the right sideline to Colorado receiver Will Sheppard, put where only Sheppard had a chance for it with the defensive back draped all over him. His protection didn’t exactly help his cause on Thursday, however, but he didn’t let that force him to give the ball away in the air.
Miller, hailing from the same school as Trey Lance, showed more composure than did Cook when pressured, using his mobility and keeping his eyes downfield at all times, also using that mobility to deliver a successful two-point conversion; his two lost fumbles blackening an otherwise solid, though not outstanding, outing.
As it stands, either could be worth a look in undrafted free agency for a shot to compete in training camp for either an immediate backup role to Dak Prescott or for a practice squad seat to develop further.
Running back
- Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Arizona (5’11”, 206 lbs)
It would have been nice to get a look at Phil Mafa out of Clemson in this game, seeing as I had him on my pregame watch list, but he didn’t take a single rep. All that did, however, was allow for me to get an up close and personal look at Croskey-Merritt and, let me tell you, I’m writing home to mother about him and sending the telegram on the fastest steed I can employ.
Initially, JCM caught my eye late in the first quarter with a 27-yard gain that saw him explode through the run lane and then separating from several defenders. By the time he later executed a jump cut that saw him plant and violently disappear laterally, followed by his first of two touchdowns displaying patience to allow blocks to develop and a hesi move that froze linebackers before bursting to the pylon, I was sold.
Winning offensive MVP honors were of no consequence to my assessment, because I had already awarded it to him at halftime. I’m not saying he’s a Day 1 or Day 2 pick, but using a flyer on this type of potential at a position of dire need would make sense.
Wide receivers
- Will Sheppard, Colorado (6’2″, 198 lbs)
- Efton Chism III, Eastern Washington (5’10”, 195 lbs)
Sheppard didn’t get a lot of burn, but I liked what I saw when he was on the field. His first offensive drive included a throw from Brady Cook that required an ability to not only high point the ball while fading toward the boundary with the defender hanging on him like grandmother’s tablecloth, but also a tremendous spatial awareness and body control to come down with the catch.
As for Chism, what can I say other than “my my my”, in my best Johnny Gill voice. Don’t let the height fool you, because he played as tough as anyone and, actually, tougher than several at his position on Thursday. His athleticism was also put on full display when he hurdled a defender atop the second quarter. Shifty, quick, tough, fast and also provides value as a return specialist — finishing the game with four catches on four targets for a team-high 48 yards while averaging 10.8 yards per catch is simply delectable.
Offensive line
- Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan, OT, Oregon State (6’8″, 328 lbs)
- John Williams, OT, Cincinnati (6’3″, 324 lbs)
- Jack Conley, iOL, Boston College (6’6″, 327 lbs)
I’ll keep this one short because, as much as I hate to say it, there wasn’t a lot to enjoy on either offensive line in this year’s Shrine Bowl; but that isn’t to say there wasn’t good film put out there by some on several occasions. GCL showed me a nice anchor that is difficult to move once he drops it and sets his lower body, and Williams has a high motor that had him finishing initial block assignments before continuing to the second level to seek out more work; and I also feel he could be kicked inside, if versatility is something you like (hint: the Cowboys love it).
Conley showed me a very good pin and pull technique later in the first quarter and his only truly bad play was when Tonka Hemingway dismissed him en route to sacking Cook in the first quarter. In all, these three showed me enough to warrant a continued watch as their pro days approach.
Defensive tackle
- Tonka Hemingway, South Carolina (6’3″, 288 lbs)
- Payton Page, Clemson (6’1″, 210 lbs)
With a name like Tonka Hemingway, you’re likely destined to do something special with your football life, because what’s better than a defensive tackle named after a truck but who also has the same last name as a legendary writer — earnest (wink) in how he approached the Shrine Bowl and his competitors across the line. If not for Hemingway’s destructive ways, Cook might’ve had a better outing. He not only sacked the opposing quarterback but also had two pass deflections, his ability to “J.J. Watt” the ball in the passing lanes paying off well in Arlington, a wrecking ball with trees glued to it.
Page’s stat line won’t jump out at you, but he had a critical fumble recovery in the second quarter that made a difference. Also, his ability to penetrate the pocket and pressure Ethan Garbers into a bad throw that was intercepted by cornerback Tyron Herring further demonstrated his ability to impact a game, even if it’s not from sacks and takeaways.
Defensive end/EDGE
- Cam Horsley, Boston College (6’2″, 307 lbs)
- Johnny Walker Jr., Missouri (6’3″, 246 lbs)
Not one, but two Boston College guys make my list as Horsley joins Conley in standing out at AT&T Stadium. There was violence in his play but also some finesse when needed, and though there’s still development to be had here, the potential is there for the right coach to mold. Horsley’s best play was when he beat Joshua Gray with a speed rush on the first defensive drive to flush Cam Miller out of the pocket and into what became a bad throw on third down that led to a punt.
And what could be more perfect to catch the attention of owner and general manager Jerry Jones than a tall glass of Johnny Walker? This one was left would-be blockers punch drunk on more than one occasion, displaying speed off the edge en route to two sacks, three quarterback hits and a forced fumble that gave his team the ball back immediately after his offense lost one themselves in a bang-bang sequence of plays in the second quarter.
Maybe Jones would be willing to turn this Johnny Walker … blue … on Day 3?
Linebackers
- Teddye Buchanan, Cal (6’2″, 236 lbs)
- Francisco Mauigoa, Miami (FL) (6’1″, 231 lbs)
- Jamon Dumas-Johnson, Kentucky (6’1″, 246 lbs)
Buchanan wasn’t kidding around, now was he? I will say that he needs to continue working on his eye discipline but there’s no denying his instincts. When he doesn’t overthink and simply trusts his abilities, he’s quite the missile. If you doubt this, check the tape at the 1:18 minute mark in the first quarter for an example, and the fact he finished with the most tackles on the West team (6 combined) is telling.
Not to be overshadowed, Dumas-Johnson led the East in tackles through the first three quarters, helping in run support and in trying to keep a lid on any would-be big plays. It worked, considering his defense completely shut out the West’s offense, and there were some points during JDJ’s play that my eyes got involuntarily large due to his reaction and closing speed; and he was joined in those efforts by Mauigoa, who finished with the same number of tackles as did JDJ (4) but also added a pass break up and a fumble recovery to his tape.
Maui’ basically looked at his Shrine Bowl coaches and said, “You’re welcome.”
Cornerbacks
- O’Donnell Fortune, South Carolina (6’1″, 188 lbs)
- Tyron Herring, Delaware (6’1″, 202 lbs)
- Shiloh Sanders, Colorado (6’0″, 195 lbs, via school)
- Nohl Williams, Cal (6’1″, 200 lbs, via school)
- Marques Sigle, Kansas State (5’11”, 196 lbs)
This was one hell of a competition, and I was here for all of it. A quiet start for Shiloh Sanders, the only Sanders that chose to participate in the game, gave way to a very active evening for the former Buffalo. Five tackles were good enough to tie him for second most on the West’s defense, adding a pass break up and also showing value on special teams. Williams nearly matched Sanders’ production in every way, helping for a much better second half from that unit.
On the opposite sideline is where the fireworks were housed, though, because from Fortune’s 65-yard pick-six in the second quarter (a terrible throw by Ethan Garbers, admittedly, missing a wide open target in the open field) helped propel Fortune to Defensive Player of the Game honors.
I personally would’ve given the nod to Johnny Walker, but I digress, and don’t let this tidbit detract from O’Donnell’s good fortune. Prior to the pick-six stealing the show, it was Herring grabbing an interception early in the second quarter and finishing with two pass break ups as well. He was fairly sticky in his coverage, definitely physical, and with soft hands that can compete with receivers’.
Last but certainly not least, Sigle stands to catch the Cowboys’ eye. For one, they’ve established a pipeline from Kansas State that previously led to the selection of Deuce Vaughn and Cooper Beebe and, for two, Sigle did enough to strengthen the interest. Not only did he lead the East’s outstanding shutout defense with six tackles, he also showed an ability to force turnovers — laying a hit on Prieskorn to force the fumble that was recovered by Mauigoa.
It was difficult to take my eyes off of Sigle but, then again, the same is true for most of the standouts that made my list on Thursday evening.
Bring on the NFL Combine and pro days.
Remember, the future is already here, so there’s literally no time to waste.
The 2025 Shrine Bowl showcased some impressive talent, and there are a few standouts that could make sense for the Dallas Cowboys. Here are a few players who caught the eye of scouts and could potentially be a good fit for America’s Team:1. QB Jacoby Smith – Smith showed great poise and accuracy during the Shrine Bowl, leading his team to victory. With the uncertainty surrounding Dak Prescott’s future in Dallas, Smith could be a solid backup option or even develop into a future starter for the Cowboys.
2. CB Taylor Johnson – Johnson’s speed and ball-hawking skills were on full display in the Shrine Bowl, making him a potential target for the Cowboys’ secondary. With the need for depth at cornerback, Johnson could provide some much-needed support for the defense.
3. WR Marcus Davis – Davis was a standout performer in the Shrine Bowl, showcasing his route-running ability and hands. With the Cowboys looking to add more weapons for their passing game, Davis could be a valuable addition to their receiving corps.
Overall, these Shrine Bowl standouts have the potential to make a significant impact for the Dallas Cowboys in the future. Keep an eye on these players as they continue their football journey.

Klayton Adams to join Cowboys as offensive coordinator under Brian Schottenheimer
FRISCO, Texas — Things are moving quickly this week for the Dallas Cowboys as it relates to filling the vacancies within their coaching staff, for there are many to be filled, and not much time to do so. With Brian Schottenheimer being named head coach, Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator and Nick Sorensen as special teams coordinator — offensive coordinator remained in flux, but no more, following two interviews with Klayton Adams.
On Friday, Adams officially agreed to terms to join the Cowboys in that exact role, offensive coordinator, rounding out the top three seats behind Schottenheimer for 2025 and beyond, according to multiple reports.
He beats out other candidates such as current Cleveland Browns’ offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, current Atlanta Falcons’ tight ends coach Kevin Koger and Detroit Lions’ running backs coach Scott Montgomery, who all spoke with Dallas’ front office over the past few days.
Adams heads to Dallas after spending the previous two seasons as the offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals, heralded for the turnaround he was able to bring about within that unit in the desert.
His coaching resume extends much further back than 2023, though, having began in the collegiate ranks in 2005 — with stints as an offensive coordinator, run game coordinator, tight ends coach and running backs coach — before ascending to the NFL as assistant offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 2021.
With Adams operating as O-line coach, the Cardinals’ rushing attack was ranked seventh in the NFL last season in total rushing yards (2,451) and trailed only the Baltimore Ravens, who boast both Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry, with a second-best league rushing yards per carry average (5.3 ypc).
The Cardinals were also top-10 in rushing touchdowns (18), fifth-most in carries of 20-39 yards (17), and tied for first in the NFL in carries of 40 yards or more (7).
It’s success that carried over from his inaugural 2023 season with the red birds.
In contrast, the Cowboys struggled to get a rushing attack going due to a committee approach that failed fairly quickly, and while finally unleashing Rico Dowdle resulted in a career and record-breaking season for the former undrafted running back, the team as a whole was inept when it came to scoring on the ground —ranked 32nd in rushing touchdowns (6) and 27th in total rushing yards (1,705).
The hope is that Adams can do for the Cowboys what he did for the Cardinals, though Dallas will now have to figure out their running back situation after releasing Ezekiel Elliott and as Rico Dowdle approaches free agency, but it should be noted he hails from Boise State, where a certain record-setting running back prospect hails from as well ahead of this year’s NFL Draft; and that the Cowboys have a longstanding pipeline to the school even prior to the arrival of Adams.
It truly bears mentioning here.
And though the play calling will belong to Schottenheimer, the task of helping to coordinate the offensive attack weekly, while also lending a hand to bolstering the impact of the offensive line, will most certainly be in the hands of Adams.
The Dallas Cowboys have made a major coaching move, with Klayton Adams set to join the team as offensive coordinator under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Adams, who previously served as the offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts, is known for his innovative offensive schemes and ability to develop young talent. With Adams on board, the Cowboys are hoping to revamp their offense and take it to the next level. Adams has a proven track record of success in the NFL and is widely regarded as one of the top young offensive minds in the league.
Fans are excited to see what Adams will bring to the Cowboys’ offense and how he will work alongside Schottenheimer to create a dynamic and high-powered attack. With a talented roster that includes star quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott, the sky’s the limit for what this new coaching duo can accomplish.
Stay tuned for more updates on Klayton Adams and the Dallas Cowboys as they prepare for the upcoming season. It’s sure to be an exciting time for Cowboys fans everywhere!

#Klayton #Adams #join #Cowboys #offensive #coordinator #Brian #SchottenheimerDallas Cowboys news: Team considering Ken Dorsey as offensive coordinator
Cowboys offensive coordinator rumors: Here’s who Dallas is closing in on to join Brian Schottenheimer’s staff – Garrett Podell, CBS Sports
Ken Dorsey is a target for the next offensive coordinator in Dallas.
Speaking at his introductory press conference Monday, Schottenheimer spoke about the pride he had in having top-ranked rushing offenses throughout his career as an offensive coordinator. It’s safe to say that will be a priority in Dallas in 2025.
“We want to be able to run the ball,” Jones said. “Everybody says that we want to run the ball and we want to stop the run, and certainly that’s what we want to do. That’s what great championship football teams do, and I know coach Schottenheimer wants to do that. I think it’s real important that we find in this hire a coach that’s going to be outstanding in the run game area.”
That’s why Dorsey is receiving consideration. His Buffalo offenses averaged the seventh-most rushing yards per game in the entire NFL in both 2022 (139.5) and 2023 (130.1).
Dorsey’s 2024 attack in Cleveland, which averaged the fourth-fewest rushing yards per game (94.6) in the entire league, was set up to fail due to quarterback Deshaun Watson’s poor play before a season-ending injury and running back Nick Chubb’s season-ending injury. Dorsey ended up being the Browns’ fall guy after Cleveland went 3-14 to secure the 2025 NFL Draft’s second overall pick; head coach Kevin Stefanski gave him offensive play-calling duties during the season and has since taken them back for 2025 following Dorsey’s firing.
New Report Reveals Why Jerry Jones Ultimately Parted Ways With Mike McCarthy – Madison Williams, Sports Illustrated
The length of contract was the deal-breaker in resigning Mike McCarthy.
ESPN’s Todd Archer reported on Thursday that McCarthy was adamant about agreeing to a five-year contract extension with the team. However, owner Jerry Jones apparently was stuck on a three-year deal. Both sides couldn’t agree on a deal, although the details of the contract the Cowboys offered McCarthy are unknown.
It was previously reported that McCarthy “surprised” Jones by walking away from the negotiations. McCarthy has decided to not pursue any head coaching roles in the NFL for the 2025 season as the New Orleans Saints job is the only one still open.
The Cowboys hired offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as McCarthy’s replacement. Schottenheimer agreed to a four-year deal with the team.
Lunda Wells, Cowboys agree to terms on contract extension – Patrik Walker, DallasCowboys.com
The Cowboys’ 2025 coaching staff will include some consistency by extending Lunda Wells.
The heralded tight ends coach has agreed to terms on a contract extension that will keep him in the organization going forward, and that can only be seen as great news for Schottenheimer’s plans on offense and the continued development of talent like Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker.
A native of Louisiana, Wells began his coaching career as an offensive line coach at the high school level before joining LSU as an offensive line assistant. He’d then land a promotion with the Tigers to assistant head coach and assistant special teams coach, ascending to the NFL when he signed on to become offensive line quality control coach of the New York Giants in 2012.
His path ultimately led him to becoming the tight ends coach for the Giants before bringing those talents to the Cowboys in 2020, where he’s helped make household names out of Dalton Schultz and Jake Ferguson — two former fourth-round picks — Ferguson having earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2023.
Fizzling Cowboys have lost their buzz. Here’s a quick way Jerry Jones can bring it back – Kevin Sherrington, Dallas Morning News
Will drafting Ashton Jeanty bring excitement back to Dallas?
The notion of using the 12th pick on a player who could give you a running start on catching Saquon Barkley and the Eagles, not to mention open vistas for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, would certainly be appealing. The Boise State whirlwind would make play-calling easier for the new head coach. He’d top Rookie of the Year odds. He’d sell tickets and merch and hope…
…Believe this: Jeanty’s talent will tempt more than just Jerry. The sight of Barkley running away from everyone this season as well as the resurgence of Derrick Henry will no doubt cause a reset in an undervalued market. Because defenses are harder than ever to diagnose, offenses need to counter with more playmakers wherever possible.
The Cowboys, in particular, need more playmakers…
…Jerry needs something to fire up a fan base that watched him sit on his hands last offseason, burning another year of their thinning patience. Letting Mike McCarthy walk satisfied some. But an incompetent search culminating in a first-time head coach at 51 didn’t answer the question of what “all in” really meant.
NFL insider’s diary: Cowboys’ plan to get CeeDee Lamb some help – Tony Pauline, Sportskeeda
The Cowboys may be taking a hard look at wide receiver early in the draft.
I’m told the team will look for a receiver during the first two rounds of the draft to pair with CeeDee Lamb, who they signed to a massive contract extension last August. Aging veteran Brandin Cooks will be a free agent come March, and the team has no true No. 2 receiver.
They will also look for help in the defensive front seven during the draft, specifically to stop the run. Dallas was the fourth-worst rushing defense in the league last season, surrendering 2,331 yards. Mazi Smith, the team’s 2023 first-round pick, has been a disappointment, and veteran middle linebacker Eric Kendricks is a free agent.
Dallas also wants to resign center Brock Hoffman, yet they are debating how much to pay him. Hoffman is a restricted free agent coming off his terrific 2024 season, meaning he can’t really test the market despite the fact that teams other than the Cowboys are interested in him. Scenarios include Dallas placing a tender on him, which would guarantee his pay for at least one year or allow him to negotiate a deal that the Cowboys could then match. Of course, signing him to a multi-year deal is also an option.
Finally, Dallas will likely look for a new offensive line coach, as they are not happy with the development of the unit. There’s a possibility they bring in a new offensive line coach to work with or replace Mike Solari, who presently leads the unit.
The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly considering Ken Dorsey as their next offensive coordinator. Dorsey, who most recently served as the quarterbacks coach for the Buffalo Bills, is known for his strong offensive acumen and ability to develop young quarterbacks. With the Cowboys looking to revamp their offense after a disappointing season, Dorsey could be the perfect fit to help turn things around. His experience working with quarterbacks like Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield could prove valuable in helping Dak Prescott reach his full potential.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, the potential addition of Dorsey to the coaching staff is certainly exciting news for Cowboys fans. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

#Dallas #Cowboys #news #Team #Ken #Dorsey #offensive #coordinator2nd interview scheduled for Cowboys OC frontrunner as new candidate emerges
Oct 27, 2024; Detroit, Michigan, USA; Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (26) celebrates with running backs coach Scottie Montgomery after scoring a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans in the first quarter at Ford Field. Mandatory Credit: Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images The Cowboys appear to be closing in on their next offensive coordinator, but names of candidates are still being added to the mix.
Reports indicate that Arizona offensive line coach Klayton Adams is interviewing in-person at The Star on Friday. It’s the second interview for the 41-year-old, following a previous virtual conversation with the front office.
Though he has not yet been in an OC role, Adams is considered an up-and-comer within coaching circles and is thought by many to be the strong frontrunner for the job in Dallas, where newly-named head coach Brian Schottenheimer will call his own plays during games.
But a member of Dan Campbell’s staff in Detroit is also getting a look from the Cowboys, per reports. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the team also interviewed Lions running backs coach and assistant head coach Scottie Montgomery for the position.
According to multiple sources, the Cowboys interviewed Detroit running backs coach Scottie Montgomery for their offensive coordinator opening. Add him to list of Klayton Adams, Kevin Koger.
— Todd Archer (@toddarcher) January 31, 2025
Montgomery, 46, worked as the Colts’ running backs coach in 2021 and 2022 after a long stint in the college ranks in various roles, including OC duties at both Maryland and Duke and three years as head coach at East Carolina.
While his name may not be one that most Cowboys fans are immediately familiar with, his former coordinator in Detroit has no doubt he’s ready for the next step in his NFL coaching journey.
“He’s got a unique perspective because he’s been in that head chair at the college level, and you feel that when you’re in the meeting room,” Ben Johnson said just last month of Montgomery, per The Detroit News. “He understands how lonely it can be at the top at times.”
Johnson now finds himself at the top in Chicago, and he believes Montgomery is on the same track.
“He’s certainly ready to call plays,” Johnson added. “He’s done that in the past. Whenever he gets that opportunity, he’ll do that. And I think he’s going to be a heck of a great head coach one day when he gets that chance.”
Under Montgomery’s tutelage, the Lions finished the 2024 season ranked sixth in the league in rushing yards and yards per carry and were tied for the second-most rushing touchdowns. The previous year, Detroit ranked fifth in the same yardage categories and were tied for league lead in ground scores.
Falcons tight ends coach Kevin Koger has also sat down with the Cowboys about their offensive coordinator vacancy. Additionally, former Browns and Bills OC Ken Dorsey was supposedly drawing interest from the Dallas front office, but no interview with him has been made public.

Dallas Cowboys’ 2025 free agent profile and prediction: QB Trey Lance
The Dallas Cowboys have a long list of unrestricted free agents who will officially hit the open market in a little less than two months. Of those, six or seven were significant contributors in 2024, meaning the Cowboys have some difficult decisions ahead of them in the coming weeks.
Today’s free agent profile series examines a player who wasn’t one of those significant contributors because he barely saw the field last season. That would be quarterback Trey Lance.
2024 Regular Season Stats: 4G, 61% Completion Percentage, 266 Passing Yards, 13 1D, 40% Passing Success Rate, 1 INT, 11 Rushing Attempts, 41 Rushing Yards
Year Review: Trey Lance’s 2024 season with the Dallas Cowboys was characterized by limited opportunities and mixed performances. The 24-year-old quarterback, who the Cowboys acquired in August of 2023, spent nearly the entirety of the regular season as Dallas’ third-string quarterback.
Even when Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending injury in Week 9, Dallas refused to elevate Lance to the starting lineup, leaving him cemented behind Cooper Rush as their clear backup. Lance got some brief playing time during a blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10, but after that, he did not see the field for more than one snap until the final week of the regular season.
Dallas gave Lance a chance to start their regular-season finale against the Commanders, and the results were not pretty. The former first-round pick completed just 20 of his 34 passes for 244 yards and consistently struggled to hit open receivers. Lance’s performance made it clear that he currently does not possess the accuracy to become a stating-caliber quarterback at the NFL level.
The decision to trade for Lance has always been a head-scratching move, but not playing him in a lost season until the year’s final game may be even more confusing. Dallas had a golden opportunity to give Lance three or four starts down the stretch to see what he could do in an extended playing period. Instead, they waited until the final week of the year and threw Lance to the fire without their best offensive weapon in CeeDee Lamb.
Regardless, Lance did not take advantage of the opportunity and capped off a very tumultuous season with his poor showing against the Commanders.
Free Agency Outlook: The Cowboys declined Lance’s fifth-year option before the start of the regular season, so he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March.
Given Lance’s lack of playing time, it’s hard to project what the quarterback’s market will look like this spring. With so much inexperience and on-field struggles when he did get a chance to play, it’s not likely a team is willing to give Lance a multi-year contract. The 24-year-old will likely have to sign a one-year deal to hopefully serve as a team’s backup next season.
Even with all the negatives going against him, there could still be some teams that are infatuated with Lance’s potential. His mobility and athleticism could be an intriguing trait to an organization that believes they could fix his accuracy issues.
Last offseason, we saw 23 quarterbacks sign free-agent deals. Despite Lance’s struggles, there will always be a demand for good quarterback play, and teams will always be willing to give players a second chance. Last spring, Mason Rudolph and Carson Wentz signed one-year deals worth $2.8M and $3.2M, respectively. This is likely a good benchmark for where Lance could end up AAV-wise on a potential one-year deal.
Cowboys Verdict: When the Cowboys traded for Trey Lance back in August 2023, the move made little to no sense. Today, the same thing rings true, and his time in Dallas has almost certainly come to an end.
With all Dallas’ other needs to address this offseason, it’s hard to see them allocating even a small amount of cap space to bring back Lance and have him serve as their backup or third-string quarterback. To make a Lance return even more unlikely, Dallas’ long-time backup quarterback, Cooper Rush, is also a free agent this offseason.
Unless a team gives Rush a deal to let him compete for a starting spot, there’s virtually zero chance Dallas would choose to bring Lance back over the veteran. While Rush has not lit the world on fire when he filled in as the starter, he has won some games, and right or wrong, the organization has plenty of faith in his ability to steady the ship if Dak Prescott is to go down again.
Overall, Trey Lance’s tenure as a Dallas Cowboy will end with more questions than answers, as the former first-round pick will search for his next opportunity this March.
Prediction: Trey Lance signs a one-year, $2.5M deal with the New York Jets
As the Dallas Cowboys head into the 2025 offseason, one of the biggest decisions they will have to make is what to do with quarterback Trey Lance, who is set to become a free agent. Lance, who was drafted by the Cowboys in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has shown flashes of brilliance during his time in Dallas, but has also struggled with inconsistency. At just 24 years old, Lance still has plenty of potential and could develop into a franchise quarterback for the Cowboys. However, with his contract set to expire, the team will have to decide whether or not to commit to him long-term.
Prediction:
It is likely that the Cowboys will look to re-sign Lance, as they have invested a lot in his development and see him as a key piece of their future. With a strong supporting cast of offensive weapons and a solid offensive line, Lance has the tools he needs to succeed in Dallas.
Ultimately, I predict that the Cowboys will offer Lance a lucrative contract extension, keeping him in Dallas for the foreseeable future. With the right coaching and support, Lance could develop into one of the top quarterbacks in the league and lead the Cowboys to success in the years to come.
