Steph Curry credits ‘special’ Gary Payton II dunk for energizing Warriors – NBC Sports Bay Area & California
The Warriors’ upset win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night at Chase Center was nothing short of a true team win.
Before Golden State capped off its eventual 116-109 victory over the Western Conference’s No. 1 seed, it trailed by as many as 14 points in the first quarter before storming back, eventually tying the game in the third quarter and taking the lead in the fourth before capping off the monster win at home.
The energy from the Chase Center crowd was high throughout the entire second half, and it peaked when Warriors guard Gary Payton II threw down a vicious poster dunk on Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein to extend Golden State’s lead to 114-105 with 1:03 remaining in the game.

The electrifying moment, while just one basket in a series of big plays down the stretch, brought the Warriors’ bench to its feet and provided a big boost that Payton’s teammates fed off of.

“Over the course of the last four years, there have been moments like that,” Steph Curry said of Payton’s dunk postgame. “He was definitely excited because he said he hadn’t had one in a while. It doesn’t matter at what point in the game it happens, it’s always a big boost energy-wise, [the] demeanor for the whole team, to have something to celebrate.
“And for him, to show his athleticism. But to finish the game like that was special, it’s like you just want to have a stamp on a game like that, and the crowd was going crazy, the whole bench was up. That’s what a team needs when you’ve had a run like we’ve had. Not to over-emphasize one play, but it’s huge. It was a microcosm of our whole night.”
Payton has been well-known for his thunderous dunks over the years, and speaking to reporters after the game, was asked if he had been “hunting” a slam like the one on Hartenstein after not producing many posters this season.
“No, I haven’t been ‘hunting’ it, but I know I haven’t been up there in a while,” Payton explained. “Our coaches be killing us with ‘follow the help,’ so Dennis [Schröder] attacked and made a great pass and I just followed the help and if you follow the help, you get opportunities like that to get going, get your team going. I had one of those, and we were already moving and rolling, so that was just a good exclamation point, just to cap off how we played tonight.”
Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins, also known for his big dunks over the years, was excited to see his teammate get up above the rim and throw one down.
“Oh man, I haven’t seen that in a while,” Wiggins said of Payton’s dunk. “I’m happy he did it. It just shows what G is capable of. He’s a very important piece to this team on both sides of the floor, I just feel like G complements the team so well, so it’s amazing to have him.”
While the electrifying moment helped ice Golden State’s big win over the Thunder, it also provided Payton and his teammates — and Warriors fans — a level of energy that has not been felt much since the beginning of the 2024-25 NBA season.

As long-distance transmission line capacity emerges as a bottleneck for Illinois’ clean energy transition, state lawmakers and advocates are drafting legislation to establish state incentives for power line projects.
One proposal under consideration would allow independent transmission developers to access subsidies through the state’s Renewable Energy Credit (RECs) program, the same mechanism that has fueled the state’s solar boom.
“Merchant transmission developers are essentially building a road — generators pay to put their electricity on that road and send it to customers,” said James Gignac, Midwest senior policy manager for the Union of Concerned Scientists, a member of the coalition working with legislators on an energy bill building on 2017’s Climate & Equitable Jobs Act, or CEJA.
The Illinois legislation being prepared for this spring’s session would create another source of revenue for such projects, lowering the cost burden on wind and solar developers looking for a more direct route to power customers. Unlike projects funded by utility ratepayers, merchant lines do not need to go through the lengthy planning and financing process overseen by regional grid operators such as MISO and PJM.
“These [high voltage, direct current] lines can serve a different purpose,” Gignac said. “It’s an overlay or additional feature of the transmission system. They can provide important benefits that supplement the [regional transmission organization] plan.”
A regional need
CEJA mandates that almost all of the state’s fossil fuel generation cease by 2045. Especially with the boom in data centers, some are worried Illinois won’t be able to meet its energy needs with renewables and nuclear if coal and gas plants close.
“Transmission is a huge part of the equation, it will be important in helping us take inefficient coal and gas plants off-line, and it will help bring on extraordinary amounts of clean energy,” said Christine Nannicelli, Sierra Club Beyond Coal senior campaign representative.
In December, MISO, which manages the grid for most of Illinois and a large part of the central U.S. spanning from the Dakotas to the Gulf Coast, approved a batch of 24 long-distance transmission projects on top of 18 interregional transmission lines approved in 2022. But these lines will likely take a decade or more to build, given lengthy bureaucratic processes.
Merchant lines can be constructed much more quickly, as they do not need to be studied and deemed necessary through the regional transmission organization process. They just need to be interconnected to the regional grid system, as well as receive certain approvals in the states they pass through. Illinois advocates have also proposed that legislation designate merchant lines as public utilities, giving them an easier path to eminent domain powers.
Merchant lines including the Grain Belt Express, which would stretch from Kansas through Missouri to the Illinois-Indiana border, have faced opposition from landowners concerned about the routes and eminent domain. Merchant lines also introduce competition for utility companies, which have pushed for legislation in various states to limit such competition.
Some advocates argue competition can be good for ratepayers and the environment. Merchant lines could bring renewable power into Illinois from other states, and also make it easier for new renewables to be built in Illinois and connected to the grid. There can be long delays for new wind and solar farms to get approval to be connected to the MISO grid. These renewables could connect to merchant lines without delay.
Grain Belt Express developer Invenergy, based in Chicago, is among the backers of a transmission incentive bill.
Another merchant transmission line seeking to deliver power to Illinois is SOO Green, a proposed 350-mile underground cable between Iowa and Illinois following a railroad right-of-way.
Both projects would facilitate sharing power between MISO and PJM grids, a necessity especially as extreme weather events increase, experts say. Last May, the two organizations for the first time agreed to coordinate on their long-range planning,
The Clean Grid Alliance, a national organization, advocates for grid expansion both through the regional transmission organizations’ planning processes, and through merchant lines. The alliance supported a proposal during the last Illinois legislative session that would have created RECs for merchant transmission. Clean Grid Alliance vice president of advocacy Jeff Danielson said he does not know of any other states that have created RECs for this purpose.
“We encourage states to help in any way possible to get the electric interstate superhighway built,” said Danielson. “It really is up to the states to secure their own economic future around a resilient and commerce-friendly grid. Whether it’s a REC concept, direct power purchase agreements, permitting reform, we encourage all of it. We literally need to build the transmission everywhere all at once.”
Financial lift
Since projects like Grain Belt Express and SOO Green cover multiple states, it may seem unfair for one state to carry more of the financial burden by offering subsidies. But Danielson said that may be necessary to tip the balance and make sure transmission gets built; and other states should follow Illinois’s lead.
“There’s the idea it will just get built,” without state action, Danielson said. “But it won’t, it hasn’t. Merchant lines are incredibly difficult to build. A governor has to understand the value to his state, his colleagues in other states have to understand this is what’s going to drive economic growth. Every time they’re in a meeting they should be saying, ‘We have to get to yes.’ It’s a shared opportunity and shared responsibility.”
A March 2024 study by the Illinois Power Agency estimated that credits for the SOO Green line would cost ratepayers $430 million per year, while reducing utility bills to save them $178 million per year. The line would also add $414 million in economic benefit to the state’s economy, the agency found.
The Laborers’ International Union of North America is among the labor unions supporting a transmission-incentives bill. The union’s Midwest governmental affairs director, Sean Stott, noted that Invenergy’s Grain Belt Express, for example, is projected to create 1,500 construction jobs in central Illinois.
“They’ve made a commitment to employing residents of central Illinois to do that work, including members of the Laborers union,” he said. “Any time you do that, you’ll have money in the pockets of workers. It would definitely generate a significant amount of economic activity in the local community.”
He doesn’t think union members would resent the additional charges on electric bills to fund transmission incentives.
“There are no free lunches in life, there would be a small charge, however they would receive by virtue of an influx of lower-cost power, downward pressure on their electric bills,” he said.
The Illinois Manufacturers’ Association also supports such legislation.
“We’ve seen warnings for the last couple years both in PJM and MISO of potential brown-outs,” said association president Mark Denzler. “When there are challenges, the first folks they ask to reduce load are industries. Transmission projects are one place where the state has the ability to work on making sure we have reliability.”
The legislation might also include a component known as “next generation highways,” allowing transmission lines to be co-located with highways, a situation currently prohibited under Illinois law. Minnesota last year passed similar legislation.
“We want to at least allow utilities the option to consider that,” said Gignac. “It’s something states can do, allowing some flexibility in the location of transmission lines.”
Danielson framed the relationship to highways as symbolic on a larger level.
“We have never thought about our grid in an integrated interstate commerce way like we thought about the highway system in the 1950s, and we really need to,” he said. “Because resilience to weather events and connecting economies through clean energy and 24-7 internet commerce are going to be the reasons Midwest states and the U.S. in general are going to be an economic leader in the future.”

The state of Illinois is taking a big step towards achieving its renewable energy goals by exploring the use of renewable energy credits to support independent transmission projects. With a growing focus on clean energy and reducing carbon emissions, Illinois is looking for innovative solutions to expand its renewable energy capacity. By utilizing renewable energy credits, the state can provide financial incentives to developers of independent transmission projects that connect renewable energy sources to the grid.
This initiative not only supports the growth of renewable energy in Illinois but also promotes the development of new transmission infrastructure, which is crucial for delivering clean energy to consumers.
By leveraging renewable energy credits, Illinois aims to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy system and create a cleaner, greener future for its residents. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development!

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell knows something about the New York Giants’ inner workings and philosophies.
After all, he began his NFL career as a third-round draft pick out of Texas A&M for the Giants in 1999, turning into a brick wall of a tight end for that offense for which he played through 2002 before leaving via free agency for his hometown Dallas Cowboys.
But Campbell credited the Giants, against whom his Lions team held two days of joint practices during training camp, with helping to set the stage for a hard-fought 2024 season.
“That was the first real taste of kind of the perception, and I thought the Giants practiced hard, they brought it, there was a lot of energy, a lot of juice, and I thought that was good for us to get that and it’s like now you know what it’s going to be like all season,” Campbell told Lions beat reporter this week.
“We handled it well, and I don’t feel like – we know that we’re going to get everybody’s best shot; we know that every week, and it doesn’t matter if it’s who we’ve played, what week it is, and our guys understand that.”
Under the old-school style coaching of Campbell, the Lions finished with a franchise best 15-2 record, that included setting a single -season franchise record with their 13th win in 2024.
Campbell and Giants head coach Brian Daboll share a professional connection. They worked together on the Miami Dolphins coaching staff in 2011, when Daboll was the Dolphins offensive coordinator, and Campbell was the tight ends coach on head coach Tony Sparano’s staff.
Last summer’s joint practice was their second one in a row–the year prior, the Lions hosted the Giants before a preseason game–and it would not be surprising if the two teams make joint practices an annual affair so long as Daboll and Campbell are in charge.
On Saturday, Campbell’s Lions will host the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round of the playoffs after having a bye.
Campbell promises a loud environment for the visiting Commanders and a hard-fought effort from his team, whom he’s reminded all week that there’s only one thing that matters most ahead of the start of this run.
“I think the most important thing is that it doesn’t matter where you’re at, where you’re seeded, how many wins you’ve had, you have to stay hungry, and our team is hungry,” he said.
In a recent press conference, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed his gratitude towards the New York Giants for their role in helping the Lions make significant improvements this season.Campbell pointed out that the Giants’ willingness to trade wide receiver Kenny Golladay to the Lions during the offseason was a key move that has had a positive impact on the team’s offense. Golladay has quickly become a top target for Lions quarterback Jared Goff, providing a much-needed boost to the passing game.
Additionally, Campbell praised the Giants for their role in helping the Lions acquire defensive tackle Danny Shelton, who has been a valuable addition to the team’s defense. Shelton’s presence on the defensive line has helped the Lions improve their run defense and put pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Overall, Campbell credits the Giants for their willingness to work with the Lions and make trades that have helped his team become more competitive. He expressed his appreciation for the collaborative spirit between the two organizations and emphasized the importance of building positive relationships within the NFL community.
As the Lions continue to make strides under Campbell’s leadership, it is clear that the support and cooperation of other teams, like the Giants, play a significant role in their success. The mutual respect and teamwork between organizations ultimately benefit the entire league and contribute to the growth and development of all teams involved.

Death Explained, Season 3 Plans, Credits Scene
SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major spoilers from “Squid Game” Season 2 finale, now streaming on Netflix.
Game over — for now. “Squid Game” Season 2 concluded its seventh and final episode with the brutal murder of Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) best friend Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) right before his eyes. Jung-bae is shot dead by Squid Game supervisor The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) after Gi-hun leads an uprising of the players in the current game.
While the death on its own is shocking and gutting and horrifying, it’s made all the more gruesome for the viewer than Gi-hun because, unlike our hero, the audience knows The Front Man’s true identity: he’s In-ho, a previous winner of the Squid Game who now works as the head guard.
In-ho has spent this game posing as Player 001 (going by the name Young-il) and growing close to Gi-hun and Jung-bae to gain their trust and pretend to be part of their cause and rebellion, only to don his Front Man mask again in the end and kill Jung-bae to punish Gi-hun.
With one more season to go, “Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk broke down the Season 2 finale for Variety — including the mid-credits scene that teases an unfamiliar version of the Squid Game featuring new male and female versions of the giant, lethal laser-eyed “Red Light, Green Light” dolls — and what he has planned for Season 3 and the series finale.
“Squid Game” Season 2 ends on a massive cliffhanger with The Front Man (In-ho/Young-il, unbeknownst to Gi-hun) killing Jung-bae right in front of Gi-hun, leaving Gi-hun to scream in horror as the pink guards hold him down and force him to watch his friend bleed out. Why did you decide to end the season here?
When I first wrote the story of Seasons 2 and 3 it was one long story arc. And I was originally planning to write this story across a span of about eight to nine episodes, but once I finished the story, it came to over 10 episodes, which I thought was too long to contain in a single season. And so I wanted to have an adequate point where I could give closure as a second season and then move on with the third. And when you look at Gi-hun’s story, all of his attempts that he puts in to stop the game: the first one being getting these mercenaries and trying to plant a tracking device, that goes to fail; the second attempt of trying to persuade people to vote so that they can leave the game, that goes to fail as well; and then the third and last attempt of bringing people together and causing the rebellion, it also all goes to fail.
So all of his failures lead to this heavy, heavy crisis of having to lose his very best friend, Jung-bae, at the hands of The Front Man. And when you think about Gi-hun’s journey, I thought that that was an adequate moment to put a stop and give him a little bit of closure along that long story arc. And then from that moment on, in the third season, having that sense of huge guilt and sense of failure weighing heavily on him — how is Gi-hun going to carry on his mission? That’s the story that’ll further unfold.
Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) in “Squid Game” Season 2 — Credit: No Ju-han/Netflix
No Ju-han/NetflixWhen can we expect Season 3 to premiere and what can you tease about the storyline for the series’ final episodes?
At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious. But what I can say is, after Season 2 launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season 3 soon. I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year. But as for the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun having lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his attempts going to failure, it’s now, what is he going to be like? What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue on with the mission? Is he going to give up or persist? And so you’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.
With Gi-hun and a good portion of other players having rebelled against The Front Man and pink guards in Season 2, will the show’s format change in Season 3? How will they be able to go back to the regularly scheduled Squid Game now that so many of the players have disrupted the system?
If you saw the hidden clip after the ending credits roll after the last episode of Season 2 — if you watch that clip, it’s going to give you a slight hint as to where Season 3 might take you. I think that’s all I can say, for now.
Which of the Season 2 games did you find the most satisfying to shoot and why?
I’d say the pentathlon. Not only was it the most challenging to shoot, but I think after we had finished filming it, I enjoyed watching it myself the most. And especially so because within one round of games, you get five smaller games. And as in Season 1, I wanted to showcase these actual children’s games that Korean people grew up playing, especially the ones that I grew up playing myself. With the way I got to show the world five different games in a single round, I would say the pentathlon was probably the most satisfying to shoot.
What do you want to tease about the remainder of the series?
With each episode it’s going to get better. With each season it’s going to get better and a more expanded story, more intense story, and definitely more entertaining. So just be sure to watch it until the very end!

Celtics’ Jaylen Brown Credits Payton Pritchard Success This Year to One Simple Reason
Boston Celtics reserve point guard Payton Pritchard enjoyed another stellar game for the 23-8 reigning champs on Friday against the Indiana Pacers.
In the 142-105 blowout victory, the Sixth Man of the Year contender was on the cusp of a triple-double in the Celtics’ romp before he was taken out of the game for the night, with the contest well out of hand and head coach Joe Mazzulla wanting to avoid injury by trotting out his deep bench. Across 31:37 18 points, the 6-foot-1 Oregon product scored 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field (4-of-10 from deep), dished out 10 assists, and grabbed eight rebounds. He also swiped a steal and blocked a shot. He notched a +25 plus-minus, to boot.
This year, the 26-year-old is averaging 15.4 points while slashing .466/.413/.848 shooting splits (his 41.3 percent 3-point conversion rate is arriving on a robust 8.7 triple tries), 3.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 0.9 steals a night in his 31 healthy games.
He’s never been much of an athlete, and has been racking up buckets with plays beneath the basket or mid- and long-range jumpers. But he has had a bit of an extra spring in his step, during his best year ever.
During a postgame interview alongside three-time All-Star Celtics small forward Jaylen Brown (who paced the Celtics against the Pacers with a 44-point, four-steal effort), the subject of his improved play this year naturally came up. Pritchard wears sneakers from Brown’s apparel brand, 741, which Brown teasingly credited with Pritchard’s better upside.
“If Payton gets a dunk this season, it’s definitely the shoes.”

“If Payton has a dunk this season, it’s definitely the shoes,” Brown joked.
Brown, of course, is quite comfortable emphatically dunking. Pritchard conceded that he feels a bit more athletic in his teammate’s footwear.
“It gives you a little bit, like in 2K, it gives you a couple points overall in quickness, rebounding,” Pritchard said. “I think I had two offensive rebounds in a row. Maybe if I’m not rocking the shoes, I don’t have that quick a bounce.”
Pritchard will get another crack at notching a triple-double this year with a rematch against the Pacers, slated for Sunday evening at 6 p.m. ET. He inked a four-year, $30 million rookie-scale extension deal with Boston ahead of the Celtics’ 2023-24 championship season, which kicks in this year. He’s making just $6.7 million this year, an absolute steal.
More Celtics: Jaylen Brown Finally Justifying Supermax Contract with Elite Play This Year
In a recent interview, Boston Celtics’ star Jaylen Brown heaped praise on rookie guard Payton Pritchard, attributing his success this year to one simple reason: hard work. Brown commended Pritchard for his work ethic both on and off the court, noting that the young guard’s dedication and commitment to improving his game have been instrumental in his impressive rookie campaign.Brown highlighted Pritchard’s relentless work ethic, his willingness to put in extra hours in the gym, and his attention to detail in studying film and learning from his mistakes. According to Brown, Pritchard’s approach to the game sets him apart from other rookies and has been a key factor in his success this season.
The Celtics’ star also pointed out Pritchard’s maturity and poise on the court, noting that the rookie plays with a level of composure and confidence that is rare for a first-year player. Brown believes that Pritchard’s ability to stay calm under pressure and make smart decisions in crucial moments has been a major factor in the team’s success this year.
Overall, Jaylen Brown’s praise for Payton Pritchard serves as a reminder of the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving success, both on and off the basketball court. As the season progresses, fans can expect to see even more impressive performances from the talented rookie guard, thanks to his unwavering commitment to improvement and his willingness to put in the necessary work to succeed.
