ICE conducts Lowcountry sweeps, arrest alleged gang members in Goose Creek
LOWCOUNTRY, S.C. (WCIV) — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and Homeland Security Investigations agents from Charlotte conducted sweeps in the Lowcountry Friday, locating and arresting individuals they say are “illegal criminal aliens.”
Though law enforcement reports from these arrests have not yet been released, Enforcement and Removal Operations’ Atlanta posted on ‘X’ stating that they were assisting agents in Charleston. The agency said they arrested undocumented migrants who are members of the gang Tren de Aragua and were dealing fentanyl.
Rep. Nancy Mace said she was on a ride-along with ICE in the Lowcountry today, however, it is unclear which locations she visited. According to Mace, the alleged Tren de Aragua gang members were arrested in Goose Creek.
“The criminal illegal alien ICE apprehended this morning was staying in my hometown of Goose Creek. They’re everywhere. They’re dangerous. And they need to be deported,” Mace stated in a post she made to ‘X’.

News 4 contacted multiple local law enforcement agencies for comment including the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, Goose Creek Police Department and ICE.
“The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office collaboratively works with our local, state and federal partners on a daily basis to keep the citizens of Dorchester County,” The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “We have nothing further to add at this time.”
The Goose Creek Police Department was not given advanced notification of the raid, Chief LJ Roscoe said in a statement.
“It was reported to me, after the fact, that ICE was at the location serving a warrant. The Goose Creek Police Department was not given information in advance that ICE was going to be at the address, however, we were notified once they needed help,” Roscoe said. “They resolved the issue prior to our arrival, so no one from Goose Creek Police Department was involved or on scene.”
Immigration enforcement has been a primary objective of President Donald Trump’s second administration. Since taking office, Trump has carried out 21 executive actions to overhaul the U.S. immigration system.
The Trump administration is demanding at least 1,800 arrests per day from ICE — setting a quota of 75 busts minimum for each of the agency’s 25 offices, according to reports from the New York Post.
His predecessor Joe Biden carried out an average of 311 immigration deportations daily, according to ICE, mostly individuals who had committed crimes.
It was reported on Jan. 27 that Immigration authorities made close to 1,200 arrests in just one day with nearly half of those detained not possessing criminal records, meaning several people were arrested for only lacking legal authorization to remain in the United States.
Being undocumented is considered a civil offense, not a crime. But it’s considered a crime when an undocumented immigrant who was previously deported re-enters the United States without permission.
“We’re not just talking about deporting illegal aliens — we’re out here seeing it in action for ourselves – firsthand,” Mace said in a post on social media. “South Carolina needs bold leadership to support President Trump’s America First agenda deporting the bad guys and putting our people first.”
ICE, or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, recently conducted sweeps in the Lowcountry area, specifically in Goose Creek, resulting in the arrest of several alleged gang members. The operation targeted individuals who were believed to be affiliated with dangerous criminal gangs and involved in illegal activities. ICE agents worked closely with local law enforcement to identify and apprehend these individuals.
While ICE’s actions aim to enhance public safety and remove criminal elements from the community, the arrests have sparked controversy and debate over the agency’s tactics and the impact on immigrant communities.
Critics argue that the sweeps have instilled fear and uncertainty among immigrant populations, regardless of their involvement in criminal activities. They also raise concerns about racial profiling and the potential for civil rights violations during these operations.
On the other hand, supporters of ICE’s efforts point to the importance of cracking down on gang-related crime and protecting communities from violence and exploitation. They argue that law enforcement agencies have a responsibility to uphold the law and ensure public safety, regardless of individuals’ immigration status.
The arrests in Goose Creek serve as a reminder of the complex and contentious issues surrounding immigration enforcement and the role of federal agencies like ICE in local communities. As the debate continues, it is crucial to consider the implications of these actions on individuals and families caught up in the crossfire of immigration enforcement efforts.

ICE conducts Goose Creek operation, police say they were not informed
GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCSC) – A Lowcountry neighborhood woke up Friday morning to United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents serving warrants in the area.
Goose Creek Police Chief LJ Roscoe confirmed that these agents went to the 100 block of Brick Greens Road before 8 a.m. Friday.
“It was reported to me, after the fact, that ICE was at the location serving a warrant. The Goose Creek Police Department was not given information in advance that ICE was going to be at the address, however we were notified once they needed help,” Roscoe said. “They resolved the issue prior to our arrival, so no one from Goose Creek Police Department was involved or on scene.”
Roscoe also claims ICE failed to notify the department that it would be in the jurisdiction of the Goose Creek Police Department to carry out warrants.
A representative of ICE “did try to tell me that they notified us in advance, however after looking into it, I found that they in fact never called Goose Creek Police Department,” according to Roscoe.
Witness video shows ICE agents handcuffing people, with one of them appearing to film the incident on his cellphone.

South Carolina Congresswoman Nancy Mace posted to X that she would be “out with ICE” Friday morning. It is unclear if she was present during this specific operation.

The police department in Goose Creek has stated that they were not informed about the operation beforehand, leading to confusion and frustration among the community. The operation reportedly targeted individuals suspected of being in the country illegally, resulting in several arrests. Many residents have expressed concern over the lack of communication between ICE and local law enforcement, as well as the potential impact on families and businesses in the area.
The Goose Creek police department has vowed to work with federal agencies to ensure better communication in the future, in order to prevent similar situations from occurring. In the meantime, residents are urged to stay informed and educated on their rights and resources available to them in the event of an ICE operation.

French Creek Freddie to emerge on Sunday
FRENCH CREEK, W.Va.— A big crowd is anticipated Sunday at the West Virginia Wildlife Center for the annual celebration of Groundhog Day.
Things get started at 9 a.m. at the facility in French Creek and the public is invited to come see West Virginia’s official groundhog “French Creek Freddie.” Freddie will emerge from his lair to predict whether we’re looking at six more weeks of winter or an early spring, all hinging on whether he happens to see his shadow.
The ceremony is at 10 a.m. but there are activities throughout the day. Wildlife Center Manager Trevor Moore said it’s always an opportunity to educate, which is the mission of the Wildlife Center.
“Groundhogs are actually members of the rodent family and they are really closely related to squirrels, so they’re a type of ground squirrel and are also known as marmots,” he explained.
He’ll be delivering a talk on groundhog biology as part of the festivities.
“They’re amazing diggers. They can dig huge burrows and move as much as 700 pounds of dirt during a summer, much to the chagrin of farmers or anyone who has one digging under their house,” he added.
The Groundhog Day traditions started back in Germany where the culture observed a hedgehog or badger for the purpose of determining the status of early spring or winter’s continuation. When German immigrants migrated into America, they brought along the tradition, but not the hedgehogs so they had to pick a new animal. The abundant groundhogs of the region seemed to be the perfect fit.
“They settled primarily in Pennsylvania and I’m assuming that’s why Groundhog Day is such a huge deal up there,” said Moore.
Gates to the West Virginia Wildlife Center open at 9 a.m. Sunday. Freddie emerges at 10 a.m. and afterward there are a variety of contests and refreshments at the facility’s gift shop.
French Creek Freddie to Emerge on SundayGet ready, nature enthusiasts! French Creek Freddie, Pennsylvania’s very own groundhog, will be emerging from his burrow this Sunday to predict the arrival of spring. Will he see his shadow and signal six more weeks of winter, or will he bring us an early spring?
Make sure to tune in to see French Creek Freddie in action and join in on the fun tradition of Groundhog Day. Who knows, maybe this year he’ll surprise us all with his prediction! Stay tuned for all the excitement this Sunday.

Wrong-way driver accused
What we know:
According to the criminal complaint, a Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputy was dispatched on Saturday, Jan. 18 to the stretch of I-94 between Rawson and Drexel avenues regarding a wrong-way driver.
Wrong-way driver on I-94 in Oak Creek
A woman from north-central Wisconsin is accused of driving the wrong way on I-94 in Oak Creek with a child in her SUV
Numerous motorists had called 911 about a driver who had entered the Rawson Avenue off-ramp, traveled south against existing traffic and continued south on the shoulder of the northbound lanes of I-94.
The deputy located the vehicle which was then “being operated off-road in the grass” near the church near I-94 and Drexel Avenue. The deputy’s lights and siren were activated — and he ordered the driver to pull over. However, the driver did not stop, but rather re-entered Drexel Avenue and traveled east for a short distance before stopping.
When the deputy approached the vehicle, he determined that the defendant was the driver of the vehicle — and there was a 10-year-old child in the vehicle with her. The deputy noted the defendant “was generally not cooperative but was not intoxicated,” the complaint says.
Wisconsin Department of Transportation cameras captured the wrong-way driving incident. The cameras showed at one point, the defendant “appears to speak with a stopped civilian, then proceeds southbound in the northbound shoulder,” the complaint says.
