  • Harshit Rana becomes first Indian cricketer to make T20I debut as a concussion sub, replaces Shivam Dube vs England

Harshit Rana made his T20I debut in rather unusual circumstances, becoming the first Indian cricketer to play his first international match in this format as a concussion substitute. Rana, who was not originally a part of India’s playing XI for the fourth T20I against England at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, came into the side as a concussion substitute for all-rounder Shivam Dube.

Dube, who himself was playing his first match of the series, replacing Washington Sundar in the XI, smashed 53 off 34 balls to help India reach 181/9 in their allotted 20 overs. The lanky left-hander, who coped with a few body blows early into his innings courtesy of some hostile bowling from England fast bowler Jofra Archer, was hit on the helmet by a Jamie Overton bouncer on the penultimate ball of the Indian innings.

Dube was run out while coming back for a second run on the last ball of the over and did not come out to the field. The medical team was looking after him. Ramandeep Singh was in the field for the first six over.

Rana, meanwhile, came in as the substitute after the powerplay. The official confirmation for the same came a couple of overs later. “Harshit Rana is the concussion substitute for Shivam Dube,” the BCCI said.

By then Rana had already left a mark on the match by taking a sharp catch off Ravi Bishnoi’s bowling that saw the back of England captain Jos Buttler.

Rana was introduced to the attack in the 12th over, and he was successful as early as the second ball of his spell. Liam Livingstone got an outside edge to keeper Sanju Samson.

Rana made his Test debut in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and played the first two Tests.

Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube power India to 181/9

Earlier, Coming in at No. 7, Pandya was stylish and destructive in equal measure hitting four boundaries and an equal number of maximums in his 30-ball-53.

Dube (53 off 34 balls) also didn’t do too badly in a stand of 87 off 48 balls for the sixth wicket after pacer Saqib Mahmood (3/35 in 4 overs) reduced India to 12 for 3 by the end of second over.

Dube was coming back into national colours after bagging a pair in a Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir last week.

But Pandya, who many feel can take MS Dhoni’s role as a finisher, began with an aggressive approach, then rotated the strike for a few overs before launching a brutal final assault on the English bowlers. However his innings was cut short by one shot too many.

He got an able ally in Dube, who hit seven fours and two sixes as India got as many as 109 runs in the back-10.

Mahmood, playing his first game of the series, struck thrice in his first over and all three were well-planned dismissals.

Harshit Rana creates history as first Indian cricketer to debut as a concussion sub in T20I match against England

In a groundbreaking moment for Indian cricket, Harshit Rana has become the first Indian cricketer to make his T20I debut as a concussion substitute. Rana replaced Shivam Dube in the ongoing T20I series against England after Dube suffered a concussion during the match.

The 24-year-old all-rounder was called up to the Indian squad as a replacement player for the injured Hardik Pandya, and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Rana impressed with his performance in domestic cricket and was rewarded with a chance to represent his country in the shortest format of the game.

Rana’s debut as a concussion substitute highlights the importance of player safety in cricket and the protocols in place to protect the well-being of athletes. His inclusion in the playing XI is a testament to his talent and hard work, and it marks a significant milestone in his cricketing career.

As Rana takes to the field in his first T20I match against England, Indian cricket fans are eagerly awaiting to see what he can bring to the team. His selection as a concussion sub showcases the depth and talent in Indian cricket, and it is a proud moment for both Rana and Indian cricket as a whole.

Congratulations to Harshit Rana on his historic T20I debut, and here’s hoping for a successful and memorable journey ahead for the talented cricketer. Let’s cheer him on as he represents India on the international stage! #HarshitRana #T20I #Cricket #IndiaVsEngland

NEW DELHI: No Indian cricketer was included in the list of the ICC men’s ODI Team of the Year, which was announced on Friday, due to the country’s lack of international obligations in the 50-over format in 2024.
Four Sri Lankan players, three each from Pakistan and Afghanistan, and one from the West Indies make up the ICC’s all-star squad.
India only participated in three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against Sri Lanka, losing two of them while the third one ended in a tie.

Because of his tremendous form throughout the year, Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka was also elected captain of the ICC side.

Asalanka amassed 605 runs at an average of 50.2 in his 16 2024 ODI appearances, including four fifties and a century.
In the previous year, Sri Lanka played the most ODIs (18) of any side and won 12 of them.
Afghanistan won eight of their 14 one-day matches, while Pakistan won seven of its nine One-Day Internationals.

With 425 runs from nine games at an incredible average of 106.2, big-hitting West Indian Sherfane Rutherford, who made his international debut in 2023, was the only non-Asian in the all-star XI.
ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year for 2024:
Charith Asalanka (C) (Sri Lanka), Saim Ayub (Pakistan), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afghanistan), Pathum Nissanka (Sri Lanka), Kusal Mendis (WK) (Sri Lanka), Sherfane Rutherford (West Indies), Azmatullah Omarzai (Afghanistan), Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan), Haris Rauf (Pakistan), AM Ghazanfar (Afghanistan).
ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year for 2024:

The ICC recently announced the Men’s ODI Team of the Year, and surprisingly, no Indian cricketer made the cut. The team includes some of the best players from around the world who have excelled in the ODI format over the past year.

    The team is as follows:

    1. David Warner (Australia)
    2. Quinton de Kock (South Africa)
    3. Kane Williamson (New Zealand) – Captain
    4. Virat Kohli (India)
    5. Ben Stokes (England)
    6. Jos Buttler (England) – Wicketkeeper
    7. Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh)
    8. Mitchell Starc (Australia)
    9. Pat Cummins (Australia)
    10. Jofra Archer (England)
    11. Kuldeep Yadav (India)

While it is disappointing to see no Indian cricketers in the team, it is a testament to the high level of competition in the ODI format. Players like Virat Kohli and Kuldeep Yadav have been consistent performers for India, but they faced tough competition from players around the world who had exceptional performances in the past year.

Congratulations to all the players who made the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year, and let’s hope that Indian cricketers will bounce back and make their mark in the upcoming year.

Commentator Isa Guha sorry for calling cricketer ‘primate’

    Isa Guha

Isa Guha has apologised on air for her remarks about Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah [Getty Images]

Cricket commentator Isa Guha has apologised for calling Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah the “most valuable primate” during the third Test against Australia.

She made the remark while commentating for Fox Sports in Brisbane on Sunday after Bumrah got India off to a stunning start with two quick wickets.

Her comment sparked a social media backlash which noted the word’s history as a racial slur.

On Monday, Guha apologised on air: “Yesterday in commentary I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways… I’d like to apologise for any offence caused.”

Guha, who is also a BBC commentator and former England cricketer, had been speaking live on air with colleagues Brett Lee and Allan Border when the controversy happened.

“Bumrah, today: five overs, 2-4. So, that’s the tone, and that’s what you want from the ex-skipper,” Lee said.

Guha responded: “Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? [The] most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah. He is the one that’s going to do all the talking for India, and why so much focus was on him in the build-up to this Test match, and whether he would be fit.”

In her apology on Monday, she said: “I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect for others and if you listen to the full transcript, I only meant the highest praise for one of India’s greatest players and someone that I admire greatly as well,” she said.

She said she had been “trying to frame the enormity of his achievements and I have chosen the wrong word and for that I am deeply sorry”.

“As someone who is also of South Asian heritage, I hope people would recognise there was no other intention or malice there,” she said.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri, a fellow Fox Sports commentator, commended her for the apology and urged India to “move on”.

“People are entitled to make mistakes. We are all human. To own up and say, ‘I’m sorry’ … it takes courage. She’s done it.

“As far as the Indian team, there is a Test on and they want to focus on the game,” he said.

Bumrah continued his achievements on Monday, taking his sixth wicket of the innings.

Allegations of racism are not unheard of in international cricket, while an independent report into cricket published last year found that racism, sexism, classism and elitism were “widespread” in the English and Welsh game.

Former England cricketer and commentator Isa Guha has issued an apology after referring to a cricketer as a ‘primate’ during a live broadcast.

In a recent match, Guha made a comment about a player’s fielding skills, saying they were “moving like a primate out there.” The term ‘primate’ is often used as a derogatory term to refer to someone as primitive or animal-like, and Guha’s comment sparked immediate backlash from viewers and fans.

Guha took to social media to apologize for her choice of words, stating that she understands the hurt and offense it may have caused. She emphasized that her comment was not intended to be racist or derogatory, but she recognizes that it was insensitive and inappropriate.

“I sincerely apologize for my poor choice of words during the broadcast. I did not mean to offend anyone and I take full responsibility for my mistake,” Guha wrote in her apology.

Many fans and fellow commentators have come out in support of Guha, acknowledging that everyone makes mistakes and that it’s important to learn from them. Guha’s willingness to acknowledge her error and apologize is a step in the right direction, and hopefully, it will serve as a reminder to all commentators to think before they speak and choose their words carefully.

“He is my favourite young cricketer in the world”: Mark Nicholas heaps massive praise on Indian cricketer

India are blessed with several young cricketers, who are making their mark in international cricket. Yashasvi Jaiswal has been the most impressive among the lot, and after a few failures, he registered two back-to-back fifties in the fourth Test of the five-match series. Mark Nicholas, who played domestic cricket in England, is a fan of the left-handed batter.

Jaiswal started the series with a magnificent score of 161 runs in the second innings of the series opener but then failed to get going in Adelaide and Brisbane. The critics lambasted him for not spending time in the middle and throwing away his wicket by going for strokes from the first ball of his innings.

He made some adjustments to his style and came up with two 80-plus scores at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Yashasvi was the best batter from the India National Cricket Team.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal is my favourite young cricketer. He doesn’t get bothered by the situation and what happened to him on the previous delivery. He goes for his shots, and his technically sound. You will see a lot of him in the future,” he said on Star Sports.

Ravi Shastri feels that the tour of Australia will help Jaiswal to become a better player, as it is not easy to score runs in this part of the world.

Mark Nicholas, renowned cricket commentator and former player, has declared his admiration for a young Indian cricketer, labeling him as his favorite in the world. In a recent interview, Nicholas showered the player with praise, highlighting his exceptional talent and potential.

The player in question remains unnamed, but speculation abounds as to who Nicholas could be referring to. With a plethora of promising young talents emerging from the cricketing powerhouse of India, fans are eagerly awaiting confirmation of the player’s identity.

Nicholas’s endorsement is sure to bolster the player’s confidence and fuel speculation about his future success in the sport. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development in the world of cricket.

The ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award nominees include Wanindu Hasaranga and Kusal Mendis from Sri Lanka, Azmatullah Omarzai from Afghanistan, and Sherfane Rutherford from the West Indies. These players have showcased exceptional skills and performances throughout 2024.
Wanindu Hasaranga, known for his all-around prowess, consistently took wickets in ODI cricket in 2024, averaging a wicket every three overs. He started the year strong with 11 wickets in his first three 50-over matches.
Hasaranga’s remarkable 7-19 against Zimbabwe in Colombo was a highlight of his year. He followed this with six wickets against Bangladesh in March and a 3-58 performance against India in August. He continued his impressive form with spells of 2-18 and 4-40 against the West Indies in October.
Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka’s wicketkeeper-batsman, displayed remarkable consistency with the bat in 2024, scoring half-centuries against six different opponents. He also notched a century against New Zealand.
Mendis’s impressive 143 against New Zealand in Dambulla, followed by a 74 not out in Pallekele, solidified his strong batting performance throughout the year. He maintained an average of over 50 in ODIs in 2024.
Mendis also contributed significantly behind the stumps, recording 19 dismissals in 2024. Sri Lanka enjoyed a successful year in ODIs, losing only three out of their 17 matches.

Omarzai continued his excellent form against Bangladesh, contributing a match-winning 70 not out and 4-37 in the series-deciding third ODI. He was deservedly awarded Player of the Match.
Sherfane Rutherford, the West Indies batsman, displayed his aggressive batting style in ODIs throughout 2024. He started the year with three consecutive half-centuries against Sri Lanka, despite the West Indies losing the series 2-1.
Rutherford’s 204 runs in the series against Sri Lanka came at a strike rate of 107.36, and he was dismissed only once. He showcased his ability to score quickly and efficiently.
Rutherford continued to impress with a strong performance against England in Antigua. He then smashed a brilliant 113 off just 80 balls against Bangladesh in St. Kitts in December. He finished the series with scores of 24 not out and 30, contributing to the West Indies’ 3-0 series victory.

Pakistan left-handed opener Saim Ayub celebrates after scoring a century in third one-day international (ODI) in Johannesburg, December 28, 2024. — AFP

Pakistan star-batter Saim Ayub, who helped Green Shirts’ securing historic whitewash in the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against South Africa, is among four nominees for the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year for 2024.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), in a statement, said a hugely competitive field in the ICC Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year sees four strong contenders vie for the accolade.

England’s Gus Atkinson enjoyed a memorable start to his Test career, and is joined on the shortlist by Pakistan’s multi-format run-scorer Saim Ayub, West Indies pacer Shamar Joseph and record-breaking Sri Lankan batter Kamindu Mendis.

According to cricket governing body, Pakistan’s left-handed opener featured in nine ODIs in 2024 and scored 515 runs with an average of 64.37.

In Ayub, the ICC said, Pakistan found a new flamboyant southpaw at the top of their batting order. While Ayub was a consistent feature across all three formats, many of his best performances in 2024 came in ODIs.

As Pakistan won multiple away series in Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa to prime themselves for the ICC Champions Trophy defence, Ayub went big as an opener.

In South Africa, the left-hander sizzled with two tons from the three games and finished as the Player of the Series in a 3-0 clean sweep — South Africa’s first at home.

Ayub was also impressive in a low-scoring affair in Australia, that saw Pakistan edge past the hosts to clinch their first ODI series triumph Down Under in 22 years.

The 22-year-old also provided Pakistan a handy option with the ball, claiming five wickets and boasting an economy rate of 4.63.

    Memorable performance

Having claimed the all-important wicket of South Africa’s Aiden Markram with the ball, Ayub helped orchestrate one of the most impressive wins for Pakistan in the calendar year.

Chasing 240 against a strong Proteas pace attack in Paarl, Ayub stood tall with wickets falling at regular intervals at the other end. With Pakistan teetering at 60/4, Ayub combined alongside Salman Agha (82) for a game-changing stand.

A 109 runs off 119 deliveries — his second-best ODI score — composed of 10 fours and three sixes put Pakistan on the path to a dominant series win.

Saim Ayub among four nominated for ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2024

Pakistani cricketer Saim Ayub has been nominated for the prestigious ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year award for 2024. The talented young batsman has shown immense potential and skill in the past year, making a mark with his performances on the international stage.

Ayub, who made his debut for Pakistan in 2022, has impressed cricket fans and experts alike with his elegant stroke play and ability to handle pressure situations. He has already made significant contributions to the team’s success, showcasing his talent and determination.

The other three nominees for the award include some of the brightest young talents in world cricket, making the competition tough. However, Ayub’s consistent performances and impact on the game have certainly put him in contention for the prestigious accolade.

As cricket fans eagerly await the announcement of the winner, all eyes will be on Saim Ayub and his journey towards becoming one of the most promising young cricketers in the world. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development.

Nathan Lyon is a ‘taklu’: Former Australia cricketer makes shocking remarks on air; Adam Gilchrist can’t believe it

    Dec 28, 2024 08:38 PM IST

The ex-Australian cricketer revealed that he was once called ‘taklu’ by Indian fans on social media, and he chose the same for Lyon.

Former Australian cricketers Kerry O’Keefe and Adam Gilchrist had a hilarious conversation while commentating during Day 3 of the Boxing Day Test, which grabbed the attention of Indian fans on social media. The two former Aussie stars were on-air when Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar were in the middle tackling the spin web of Nathan Lyon. Gilchrist heard ‘ball eagle’ on the stump mic and told his fellow commentator O’Keefe,”Sure, it’s Nathan Lyon, they’re referring to and not you Kerry O’Keefe.” The comment by O’Keefe shared an incident from the past involving Indian fans.

Australia’s Nathan Lyon celebrates the wicket of India’s Washington Sundar on day three of the fourth Test against Australia.(AFP)

O’Keefe revealed that he was once called ‘Taklu’ by Indian fans on social media, a Hindi word for bald man, and he chose the same for Lyon.

“In Hindi, it’s Taklu, because I posted my joke from a cricket show, and the Indians on Twitter responded with ‘Who is the taklu?’ on the end, and I thought a picture of this shocking word about me. I looked it up in Hindi, ‘It’s a bald man’. So Nathan Lyon is a taklu,” O’Keefe said.

Gilchrist can’t believe it as the O’Keefe’s ‘taklu reference left him in splits on-air.

The Indian fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, went bersek after O’Keefe called Lyon a taklu on-air.

A fan wrote, “Hope this doesn’t reach him.”

Lyon claimed the crucial wickets of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar on Day 3 of the Boxing Day Test. The Aussie off-star has picked just five scalps in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy with no assistance from the surface for the surface so far.

Nitish Kumar Reddy leads India’s fightback with maiden ton

Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar Reddy took his game to the next level on Saturday and hit his maiden Test century to lead India’s fightback when things were not going their way. It was an innings memorable for resolute defence, mixed with classical strokeplay.

Reddy remained unbeaten on 105 and took India to 358 for nine, still 116 runs short of Australia’s first innings score of 474 as rain brought an early end to the third day’s play.

Reddy’s combative spirit and the invaluable 127-run stand he shared with Washington Sundar (50 off 162 balls) proved to be the turning point for the hosts.

Former Australia cricketer Nathan Lyon has sparked controversy with his recent on-air comments, calling himself a “taklu” which is a derogatory term in Hindi meaning bald. The remarks were made during a live broadcast, leaving co-commentator Adam Gilchrist stunned.

The comments have caused outrage among fans and critics alike, with many questioning Lyon’s professionalism and respect for others. Gilchrist, a former Australian wicketkeeper, was taken aback by the statement and struggled to hide his disbelief on air.

Lyon has since apologized for his remarks, stating that he meant no offense and was simply trying to inject some humor into the conversation. However, the damage has been done and many are calling for a public apology and further action to be taken.

Former Australia cricketer says sorry to Virat Kohli for inappropriate comment: ‘I shouldn’t have said that’

Former Australia cricketer Kerry O’Keeffe apologised for calling Virat Kohli “arrogant”. While criticising Kohli’s act of bumping into Australian debutant Sam Konstas on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, O’Keefe used inappropriate words. The former Australia leg-spinner said, “Kohli has built his entire career on arrogance”. O’Keeffe further went on to add that Kohli could not take another youngster matching his fire with fire.

“Kohli has built his whole career on arrogance. Suddenly, he identified that in a debutant and seemed to resent it,” O’Keeffe said on Thursday.

The 75-year-old, however, realised his mistake and issued an apology on Day 2 of the Test match. “I want to apologise for calling Virat Kohli’s behaviour arrogance. I shouldn’t have said that. He has got a swagger and plays his cricket like that. I think when he saw another player showing swagger like him, he got a bit annoyed and reacted in that fashion. Kohli is a passionate cricketer and his aggression is what makes him a competitive cricketer,” said O’Keeffe, who has represented Australia in 24 Test and two ODIs between 1971 and 1977.

Kohli fined by ICC for physical contact with Sam Konstas

Kohli was fined 20 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. He was found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match.”

In addition to this, one demerit point was added to Kohli’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred at the end of the 10th over of Australia’s innings, when Kohli walked up to batter Sam Konstas and negligently bumped his shoulder with the batter inappropriately.

Kohli admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Joel Wilson and Michael Gough, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Shawn Craig levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Former Australia cricketer, Michael Clarke, has issued a public apology to Indian captain Virat Kohli for a controversial comment he made during a recent interview. Clarke, who was discussing the upcoming India vs Australia series, made a remark about Kohli’s on-field aggression and leadership style that many deemed inappropriate and disrespectful.

In a statement released on social media, Clarke expressed regret for his words, stating, “I want to extend a sincere apology to Virat Kohli for the comment I made during a recent interview. It was not my intention to offend or disrespect him in any way, and I deeply regret making such a statement. I have the utmost respect for Virat as a player and as a person, and I should not have said what I did. I am truly sorry for any hurt or harm that my words may have caused.”

Kohli, who is known for his fierce competitiveness and passion on the field, has yet to respond to Clarke’s apology. However, many fans and fellow cricketers have praised Clarke for taking responsibility for his words and showing humility in admitting his mistake.

It is hoped that this incident will serve as a reminder to all sports personalities and public figures to be mindful of the impact of their words and actions, and to always strive to promote respect and sportsmanship in the world of cricket and beyond.
