Get ready for your next binge obsession as Reacher Season 3 is just a few days away! The hit Prime Video series brings back Alan Ritchson in his iconic role as Jack Reacher and promises more action, suspense, and new bad guys.
The former military policeman will dive into an undercover mission, fueled by revenge and constant challenges. He is tasked with taking down a powerful criminal organization, especially a character named Francis Xavier Quinn who has a dark history with Jack Reacher.
The twist? Reacher believed he was successful in killing Quinn in the past but turns out he is alive and even deadlier. While he usually prefers direct action, Reacher must go undercover to strike Quinn down.
While the Prime Video series is adapted from Lee Child’s acclaimed novel, the show doesn’t strictly follow the book order. This time, the showrunners have chosen Child’s seventh book, ‘Persuader’ for Reacher Season 3.
As seen in the trailer, Jack Reacher will have to face an enemy from the past, while also fighting other bad guys. Similarly, Quinn is the leading foe in Persuader, who killed Jack’s old ally, Dominique Kohl.
Now that Quinn is alive, Reacher’s got a score to settle, and he never misses!
Prime Video’s Reacher Season 3 is based on Lee Child’s Persuader
After nearly a year of anticipation, fans are getting Reacher Season 3 on February 20, 2025. While the show is based on Lee Child’s Reacher novels, it does not follow the chronological order. The first season followed the first book, while the second was based on Child’s eleventh book.
As for Reacher Season 3, the showrunners decided to adapt book seven ‘Persuader,’ in which Jack Reacher takes on an undercover mission. As promised by showrunner, Nick Santora (via The Hollywood Reporter):
“Reacher [in Season 3] is going to kick the crap out of people; he’s going to be incredibly smart and deductive in figuring things out; he’s going to be a hero and he is going to help save the day! He’s going to be Jack Reacher.”
Interestingly, this is what Lee Child’s Persuader is about. Reacher joins forces with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and finds out that his past enemy Quinn is connected to the DEA’s prime target Zachary Beck, a man suspected of being a wealthy drug smuggler.
As Reacher gets to dig deep into Beck’s history, he also gets to settle his score with Quinn. The book also talks about Jack Reacher’s past life, which will be shown as flashback scenes in Reacher Season 3.
It will reveal more about the former military policeman and how Francis Xavier Quinn’s actions led to the tragic death of Reacher’s young colleague. Not only this, but Child’s seventh book also introduces fans to DEA Agent Susan Duffy, who accompanies Reacher on his mission and becomes one of his love interests.
The role of Susan has been secured by Sonya Cassidy in Reacher Season 3, the actress who has been a part of several engaging TV series.
The third season will have a few newcomers (Image Source: YouTube/Prime Video)
Unlike most of his Reacher novels, Lee Child wrote Persuader in the first person, making it even more intense and dark. Additionally, the title Persuader isn’t just referring to Jack Reacher’s undercover mission, but also the Mossberg shotgun mentioned in the narrative.
Like its previous seasons, Reacher Season 3 will also stay true to Lee Child’s work, while making a few necessary changes to the TV format. The new chapter is set to bring back fan-favorite characters and some newcomers for a darker and action-packed thriller.

The highly anticipated new installment of the action crime series has left fans buzzing with excitement and speculation. Many are wondering which book the latest addition is based on, and the answer may surprise you.
In a bold move, the creators of the series have decided to deviate from the original source material and take a fresh approach with the new installment. While previous episodes were closely adapted from a popular book series, this time around the writers have crafted an original story that builds upon the existing world and characters.
This decision has sparked both excitement and trepidation among fans. Some are eager to see where the new storyline will take their favorite characters, while others are wary of straying too far from the familiar source material.
Regardless of the source material, one thing is certain – the new installment promises to deliver the same heart-pounding action, suspense, and drama that fans have come to love. So buckle up and get ready for a wild ride as the action crime series takes a bold new direction in its latest installment.
The director Guillermo del Toro once said Idris Elba has “a supernatural gravitational force” and compared him to a “Rodin sculpture … [with] all the turmoil of humanity in his eyes”. It is those qualities – being a magnetic TV and movie star and an activist seemingly carrying the burden of the world on his shoulders – that makes him so compelling in Idris Elba: Our Knife Crime Crisis.
The BBC documentary follows Elba throughout 2024, as he mounts a campaign to try to stop knife crime in the UK. The headlines have long been filled with tragic stories of young lives ended by blades, but in the past decade the numbers have almost doubled, with four people in the UK dying from stab wounds every week. Elba first got involved in 2019, posting videos online about how more had to be done to stop it. Since then, he has become more informed and more involved. We watch him meet politicians, law enforcement officers, victims, prisoners, youth workers and trauma specialists to figure out a proactive – rather than reactive – approach, and carry out interventions in the lives of those who might one day become perpetrators.
What takes this from being a good documentary to a great one is just how much complexity and nuance Elba and director Ben Steele are able to contain within its one-hour running time. It covers everything from the economic toll of recidivism to domestic violence in the home as early indicators, the lack of funding for youth programmes, the importance of mentorship and even how images of knife fights on social media can act as an incentive to carry weapons. The film immediately tackles common misconceptions around knife crime as a problem within black and brown urban communities, when in fact 69% of perpetrators are white and it is spreading fastest in Somerset, Bedfordshire and Sussex. Elba puts this gently to Tayla Pitman, the sister of 16-year-old Harold Pitman, who was stabbed to death while watching New Year’s Eve fireworks, and she responds: “Exactly, that’s the first thing that came out when Harry was killed was ‘I bet it was a black person’ and it wasn’t – it was another white boy.” But rather than just using her to vocalise a salient point, Elba extends warm empathy to the young woman, hugging her and commending her strength.
Idris Elba: Our Knife Crime Crisis – trailer
With so many lives ruined, it would be easy to get caught up in the overwhelming statistics of these crimes, but Elba manages to convey just how seismic each loss is. Tayla is not the only person he meets who has been traumatised by knife crime; the charming youth worker Jhemar Jonas’s brother was stabbed to death at 15. Faz Ahmed, who runs a knife amnesty programme, was stabbed nine times on two occasions as a young man. And most harrowingly, Pooja Kanda’s teenage son Ronan had a sword plunged into his heart in a case of mistaken identity. The programme shows us disturbing footage of the event, with Ronan unaware of what is about to happen right up until the sword enters his rib cage from behind. Pooja sits in her son’s untouched bedroom two years on and recalls how each morning she’d rush straight in to his room for a cuddle. She can only say that: “Everyone failed. The police, education systems, the families. All those failures are why my son is not on this side of the bed. Why I’m not able to hug him.”
The film is filled with heartbreak but is still ultimately an optimistic piece of work. It is packed with tangible solutions and examples of effective ways these crimes could be prevented if only those holding the purse strings would invest in solutions such as hospital interventions, knife amnesties and the scheme in Coventry (the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence, or CIRV) that takes 16-year-old Jayden – who was previously excluded from school and “felt naked” without a knife – and puts him on a path to becoming a football coach. It is made all the more maddening when the legislation Elba backed to make it illegal to purchase “zombie knives”, machetes and ninja swords was rejected in May 2024 by the Conservatives. In the aftermath of that news, he seems crushed under the weight of political indifference and can only lament to the camera: “It felt like there was an attachment to swords which may have some traditional, heritage … thing. I just couldn’t understand it.”
Still, Elba reminds us this is “a marathon not a sprint” and he will continue to do all he can to stop so many lives being destroyed by knife crime. By the time the programme ends, he has presented compelling arguments and practical solutions, met with King Charles, the prime minister and the home secretary. Despite making huge strides in his activism, he stays humble and says he considers himself simply “an amplification device”. But whether he’s a supernatural force, a Hackney boy done good or an amplifier for a noble cause, Elba is at the forefront of a vital documentary.

“Wait for me – before you two start hitting each other.” Lionsgate has unveiled the first official trailer for a crime comedy called Riff Raff, the latest film directed by New Yorker filmmaker Dito Montiel. Not to be confused with the 1935 classic with Spencer Tracy. This first premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last year, and will be out in theaters in February. One-time criminal Vince turned his life around when he fell in love with Sandy. Nearly 20 years later, the still-happy couple are looking forward to spending a quiet New Year’s Eve with their son. But then Vince’s other son, Rocco, shows up unannounced with his pregnant girlfriend, Marina, and Vince’s first wife, Ruth, in tow. It is not a happy reunion. Ruth is rude & lewd, while Rocco — who never divested left the family business — is clearly hiding something. Hot on Rocco’s tail is Lefty, an aging mafioso with a score to settle regarding his own son. The film features Jennifer Coolidge, Ed Harris, Gabrielle Union, Lewis Pullman, Miles J. Harvey, Emanuela Postacchini, Michael Angelo Covino, Pete Davidson, and Bill Murray. This one looks mildly amusing, but mostly skippable.
Here’s the first official trailer for Dito Montiel’s film Riff Raff, direct from Lionsgate’s YouTube:
Oscar nominees Bill Murray & Ed Harris star alongside Emmy winner Jennifer Coolidge & Pete Davidson in this darkly comic crime thriller about how far you’ll go to protect the ones you love… Vincent (Harris) and his family plan to share a quiet New Year’s Eve together until his sketchy past catches up with him and the night reveals secrets no one could ever imagine.Riff Raff is directed by American filmmaker Dito Montiel, director of the movies A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Fighting, The Son of No One, Empire State, Boulevard, Man Down, and The Clapper previously. The screenplay is written by actor John Pollono (Stronger, Small Engine Repair). It’s produced by Sarah Gabriel, Marc Goldberg, Adam Paulsen, and Noah Rothman. This initially premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last year. Lionsgate debuts Montiel’s Riff Raff in select US theaters starting February 28th, 2025 this winter. Anyone want to watch this film?
Get ready for a hilarious crime comedy like no other! Jennifer Coolidge and Pete Davidson are teaming up in the upcoming film ‘Riff Raff’ and the trailer is here to give you a sneak peek.
In this offbeat comedy, Coolidge plays the eccentric and flashy con artist, Riff, who teams up with the bumbling and clueless petty thief, played by Davidson, to pull off the biggest heist of their lives.
With Coolidge’s signature wit and Davidson’s comedic charm, ‘Riff Raff’ promises to be a laugh-out-loud adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Blue got in the new political crime series on Hulu. “Paradise,” starring James Marsden and Sterling Brown, is available to stream now if you’re into that sort of thing, and in the first episode, Marsden’s character dropped an unexpected Kentucky Basketball reference.
Marsden, a former KSR guest, plays President Cal Bradford, a die-hard Kentucky fan (with an ironic first name by the show’s writers). About halfway through Episode 1, titled “Wildcat Down,” we learn the President loves his Wildcats, and though he is the Commander-In-Chief, he still hasn’t gotten over Christian Laettner’s shot in 1992.
After dodging an assassination attempt, the President says, “I’ll admit, when I saw that blood, I thought I’d been Christian Laettnered… Christian Laettner? Duke? He made the most famous college basketball shot of all time against us in the tournament, single-handedly killed me and every other Kentucky Wildcat fan that day.”
Nobody enjoys a Christian Laettner callback, but it is neat to see Kentucky references in the fictional Oval Office. Maybe Episode 2 will welcome Chief of Staff Willie Cauley-Stein, or the President will declare war on Knoxville.
Watch the trailer for “Paradise” for more on Big Blue Nation’s fictional President
Hulu’s new political crime series “Bluegrass Betrayal” has taken the streaming world by storm with its gripping storyline and intriguing characters. At the center of the show is President John Harrison, a charismatic leader who has a deep love for the state of Kentucky and its rich culture.
However, President Harrison’s personal vendetta against former basketball star Christian Laettner has become a central plot point in the series. The President’s disdain for Laettner stems from their college basketball rivalry, where Harrison’s beloved Kentucky Wildcats were defeated by Laettner’s Duke Blue Devils in a heartbreaking defeat.
As the series unfolds, viewers are taken on a thrilling journey as President Harrison’s vendetta against Laettner puts him at odds with powerful political adversaries and leads to shocking revelations about his past. With its fast-paced action and complex characters, “Bluegrass Betrayal” is a must-watch for fans of political dramas and crime thrillers.

GTA 6 had been a rumor for years—an inevitable rumor, considering that the last one made basically infinite money—but those murmurs were finally confirmed in December 2023, when Rockstar officially revealed Grand Theft Auto 6 to the world. And because nothing with GTA can be entirely uncomplicated, it was a reveal that came earlier than planned, with Rockstar unveiling the GTA 6 debut trailer a day ahead of schedule thanks to an early leak. However we got our first look, we now know when to expect the sequel: GTA 6 will release in 2025. On console, at least.
January 2025: It’s now been over a year since the GTA 6 reveal trailer with no further announcements from Rockstar but we are within what it set at the release year. That hasn’t stopped there from being plenty of speculation from other developers about the Titanic impact it will have on everything around it when it does launch.
When might the GTA 6 release date be?
GTA 6 is expected in fall 2025, according to the latest comments from Take-Two. During an earnings report at the end of 2024, CEO Strauss Zelnick mentioned its “exciting new titles coming in Fiscal 2026—including Grand Theft Auto 6 in the fall.” Reference to FY26 puts GTA 6’s launch no earlier than October 2025.
The big question at this point is platforms: Yes, it will undoubtedly come to PC (see more on that below) but whether our version will launch simultaneously with the console release, or if we’ll have to wait several months (or a year) as we have with previous Rockstar games remains to be confirmed.
What’s in the GTA 6 reveal trailer?
The first GTA 6 trailer doesn’t dive deep into details about the game, but it does seem to confirm a lot of what was previously rumored, including a “Bonnie & Clyde-inspired” criminal duo as the lead characters in the game, and a Florida-like setting in the GTA universe’s equivalent: the state of Leonida. Both of those details came to light through earlier leaks.
Other signs of a Florida-inspired setting include an airboat that’s briefly visible in the early stage of the trailer, and those flamingos and night-time shots of the city, both of which look like direct lifts from Miami Vice. (Which I admit makes up pretty much the entirety of my knowledge of Florida.) A less obvious tell is the song in the trailer, Love is a Long Road by Tom Petty—a native of Florida.
Portions of the video also emulate Instagram and TikTok-style social media posts, which could provide some interesting gameplay twists depending on how (or if) the social mechanic is integrated into the game, and of course there’s an abundance of nice cars, scantily-clad women, glitter and grime, and bad behavior throughout. It is definitely a Grand Theft Auto trailer.
We’ve also started picking out all the GTA 6 cars that appeared in the trailer. There are a lot of old series favorite brands coming to the new Vice City.
Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

What do we know about the GTA 6 story?
While we’ve gotten a reveal trailer, we’re still light on confirmed GTA 6 details. Based on what we’ve seen—and info gleaned from prior rumors and leaks—it seems like GTA 6 will feature dual protagonists, following a criminal couple in their Bonnie & Clyde-style lawbreaking.
Beyond that, we’re still in speculative territory, and don’t worry: People are speculating. Already, there’s a fairly prominent story theory that started circling in the aftermath of the GTA 6 reveal. The trailer begins with Lucia—one of our two heroes—in prison, before showing glimpses of her and her partner undertaking robberies and car chases, presumably after her Lucia’s release. However, after spotting an ankle bracelet on Lucia in the game’s official key art, some internet conspiracists think the events in the reveal trailer are actually playing out in reverse—that the shots we see of the partners in crime are showing what gets Lucia incarcerated.
Interesting implications, particularly when considering how the trailer shows Lucia and her partner committing to trust. Perhaps a kind of “Chekhov’s pinkie-swear,” if you will.
While the GTA 6 reveal trailer shows plenty characters, we still don’t know much about the game’s primary cast, aside from the confirmation of its protagonist partners. Its couple in crime. Its lovebirds in larceny.
Here’s what we’ve got on the characters in GTA 6:
Lucia
Half of GTA 6’s protagonist power couple, Lucia makes an important mark in the Rockstar record book as the first female lead in the series. And based on the reveal trailer, she’s doing a lot of leading: She’s the first face we see, she’s the only one named, and in the closing shot, she’s the one kicking the door in to kick off an armed robbery.
Aside from a glimpse of Lucia in prison, we don’t know much about her in-game circumstances yet, or even if the game takes place before or after her incarceration.
Lucia’s boyfriend, who may or may not be named Jason
Okay, listen, we don’t know anything about GTA 6’s other protagonist yet. While he was referred to as “Jason” in the 2022 leaks, Rockstar hasn’t actually confirmed his name yet. But while we’re short on specifics, we can at least confirm here that the alleged Jason is capable of operating a motor vehicle, and is known to possess and occasionally wear a shirt. Stay tuned for more!
GTA 6 setting
What will the GTA 6 setting be?
Everything flows from Rockstar’s choice of city and decade, and we now know that GTA 6 will take place in modern day Vice City, in the state of Leonida—the GTA universe’s parallel reality version of Florida.
Rumors from July 2021 already pointed to GTA 6 returning to Vice City. These claims said that GTA 6 will take place in a modern day version of the series analog for Miami. These same predictions also said that GTA 6’s map will evolve or expand over time, possibly through DLC or live game updates.

Will GTA 6 release on PC?
Will GTA 6 come to PC?
It’s a pretty safe bet. Rockstar’s past with PC versions has been a bit erratic, but the immense popularity of both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC is a great reason for Rockstar to take the platform seriously.
And it seems like Rockstar feels the same, considering it released the Rockstar Games Launcher on PC in 2019. It’s hard to believe the studio would release its own games launcher if it didn’t plan on hosting its future games there, including GTA 6. That said, we can probably expect a gap between the release of GTA 6 on consoles and PC. It took GTA 5 a year and a half to come to PC, and RDR2’s gap was almost a year as well.
The full announcement for GTA 6 also suggests that the PC version will come later: It says “Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X-S games and entertainment systems in 2025,” but makes no mention of a PC release.
GTA 6 Online
Will there be a GTA 6 online?
Almost certainly. While GTA 5’s online Los Santos has yet to run out of gas, with Rockstar still regularly adding new activities, content, and events to its big multiplayer world, it’s hard to imagine GTA 6 would skimp on a multiplayer offering. Given that GTA 4, GTA 5, and both Red Dead Redemption games have had online servers, it feels like a must-have for GTA 6.
GTA 6 leaks
What was in the GTA 6 leaks?
The big dump of leaked footage from GTA 6’s first major leak may still be floating around, but unless you’re extremely interested in picking apart debug footage you aren’t missing much. Based on what we’d seen: yup, this sure is a GTA game in the works. It’s all older footage and is absolutely internal development stuff, not some sneaky peak at a final, polished product.
Here are the few high points that give us a hint of what to expect in the launch version of GTA 6:
Two playable characters: Referred to as Lucia and Jason, they are likely the “Bonnie & Clyde inspired” crime duo referenced in past rumors.
Vice City: Part of the footage includes a modern rail car labeled “Vice City Metro,” making the rumors of a return to fictional Florida seem likely too.
Modern day setting: We’ve spotted at least one pedestrian with a smart phone, which seems to discount smaller rumors about a possible ’80s setting.
No matter how likely they do seem, all the other features we can glean from the footage—Lucia committing a robbery at a waffle joint, dialogue options for playable characters, a character seen moving and crawling while prone, the messaging system called “WhatUp!”—should be taken as subject to change until we see a more representative gameplay showcase from Rockstar closer to GTA 6’s release.
GTA fans have been eagerly anticipating the release of the next installment in the iconic franchise, and while Rockstar has been tight-lipped about the details, there are a few things we do know about GTA 6.
1. Setting: Rumors suggest that GTA 6 will be set in a modern-day version of Vice City, the fictional Miami-inspired city from GTA: Vice City. This would mark a return to the beloved location, but with updated graphics and gameplay mechanics.
2. Characters: While the main protagonist of GTA 6 has yet to be revealed, there are rumors that players may be able to control multiple characters, similar to GTA V. This could add an interesting dynamic to the gameplay and story.
3. Gameplay: Rockstar is known for pushing the boundaries of open-world gameplay, and GTA 6 is expected to be no different. From immersive side missions to a vast open world to explore, players can expect a truly immersive experience.
4. Next-gen technology: With the release of next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, GTA 6 is expected to take full advantage of the new hardware. This means improved graphics, faster load times, and potentially new gameplay features.
While Rockstar has yet to officially announce GTA 6, fans can rest assured that the next crime adventure is in the works. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.

The Seattle City Council has selected Mark Solomon to represent District 2, after former Councilmember Tammy Morales vacated the seat earlier this month.
Solomon’s name may be familiar to voters in the district, which stretches from the Chinatown-International District to Rainier Beach. He challenged Morales for her seat in 2019 but lost by a decisive 21 percentage points.
“Out of all the people … I can speak the highest of Mark’s integrity and Mark’s moral character,” District 1 Councilmember Rob Saka said, noting he served with Solomon at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and has known him for two decades.
The Council voted 5-3 Monday to appoint Solomon to the seat after five rounds of voting. A candidate needed five votes to secure the seat; Solomon received four votes in the first four rounds before reaching the threshold he needed to win.
“Let’s stop talking, and let’s get some work done,” Solomon said after accepting the appointment, seemingly referencing the lengthy hearing in which several members offered kind remarks to each of the finalists.
Solomon is a crime prevention coordinator with the Seattle Police Department, a position that seems to align him with the Council’s public safety priorities. He was one of six finalists — all men — selected from a list of 20 candidates.
“If this is the future of our city, our future is bright,” District 6 Councilmember Dan Strauss said of the finalists.
Strauss went on to address Solomon: “A public commenter said they breathe a sigh of relief when you walk through the door. I am one of those people.”
To keep his new position, Solomon will have to run for the seat in a special election this year. The winner of that election will serve the remainder of Morales’ term through 2027.
Morales announced she was stepping down in December, saying she was “targeted with bullying and gaslighting” by other members of the council. She also alleged that the “council is sliding towards really undemocratic behavior.”
The final vote came down to Solomon and Ducksworth, a transportation advisor to Mayor Bruce Harrell.
This is the second year in a row the Council has had to appoint someone to fill a vacant seat.
Last January, citywide Position 8 was left open when Teresa Mosqueda left for a seat on the King County Council. Tanya Woo was appointed to replace her in a move that left her detractors aghast; Woo had just lost her bid to unseat Morales in November 2023. Woo then lost Position 8 in November 2024 to Alexis Mercedes Rinck, who currently sits on the Council. Rinck voted for Ducksworth on Monday.
Some wondered if Woo would seek the District 2 appointment, but her name was not on the Council’s shortlist. Woo has still not ruled out running for the office again, though, and could make a play for the seat in the special election this year.
The Seattle City Council has appointed a familiar face to fill the vacant District 2 seat – the Seattle Police Department’s crime prevention coordinator, [Name]. This decision comes after much deliberation and consideration of various candidates.
[Name] has been serving as the SPD’s crime prevention coordinator for the past [number] years, working closely with community members and law enforcement to address crime and safety issues in the district. With [his/her] background in law enforcement and community engagement, [Name] is well-equipped to represent the interests of District 2 residents on the City Council.
In [his/her] new role, [Name] will focus on addressing public safety concerns, supporting small businesses, and advocating for affordable housing in the district. [He/She] brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to serving the community, making [him/her] a strong candidate for the position.
The City Council is confident that [Name] will be an effective and dedicated representative for District 2, and looks forward to [his/her] contributions to the city’s governance. Congratulations to [Name] on [his/her] appointment, and best wishes for [his/her] upcoming tenure on the City Council.

BROCKTON — Brockton author Dave Wedge has signed a deal to write a book on the murder trials of Karen Read.
The commonwealth says Read struck her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, with her SUV outside the home of another Boston cop in Canton after a night of heavy drinking. Read’s lawyers argue that people inside the house killed him. The first trial ended in a hung jury. A second trial is scheduled for April. Read is charged with second-degree murder.
BenBella Books aims to publish “Cop Town: Scandal, Corruption and Murder in Suburban America” in 2026. The plan is to release the project in hardcover, paperback, e-book and audiobook.
Scenes from the courtroom during day 20 of Karen Read’s murder trial at Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham.
Wedge said the O’Keefe case is an important story with great public interest.
“It’s a story of a woman fighting for her life, a story of justice delayed for the O’Keefe family and a tale of how several families and communities have been torn apart in a very public fashion. Attorney General Dana Nessel speaks during a Lansing press conference on bills to strengthen hate crime laws, April 26, 2023 | Laina G. Stebbins
Nineteen bills that would, among other things, update Michigan’s hate crime law, criminalize sextortion, and promote school safety, were signed into law Wednesday by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“Michiganders should feel safe whether they’re watching a movie at home or heading into the classroom,” said Whitmer, a Democrat. “That’s why I’m proud to sign these 19 commonsense bills that will keep Michigan families and neighborhoods safe from gun violence and other violent crimes.”
The legislation that perhaps had the hardest path to passage were House Bills 5400 and 5401, sponsored by state Reps. Noah Arbit (D-West Bloomfield) and Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids), respectively, which expand the definition of, and amend the sentencing guidelines for, hate crimes.
Arbit’s bill updates Michigan’s 1988 “ethnic intimidation” statute to add sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability or age as characteristics that would be considered a hate crime if they were the basis of violent or threatening behavior.
It was the second attempt by Arbit to expand the law, after a previous version of the legislation was attacked by opponents as trying to criminalize misgendering someone, which he said was a “ridiculous lie,” noting the word misgender isn’t even in the text of the law.
Even the version that passed the House in November was the focus of criticism by Republicans, all except one of whom voted against it.

Regardless, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, welcomed the bills finally becoming law.
“Over the past decade, we have seen not just an uptick in hate crimes, but a normalization of racist, antisemitic and bigoted language, symbolism and actions – including a close adviser to the President giving the Nazi salute during an inaugural rally just this week,” posted Nessel. “It’s incumbent upon those of us with the authority to unilaterally denounce such sentiments; otherwise, there’s no stopping this behavior. I applaud the Governor for signing these long overdue changes to the state’s statutes.”
Several of the bills Whitmer signed were focused on addressing firearm and school safety, starting with House Bills 5450 and 5451, sponsored by state Reps. Sharon MacDonell (D-Troy) and Julie Brixie (D-Meridian Twp.), respectively.
The bills require information on the safe storage of firearms to be distributed to parents of students. Specifically, the information would outline the requirements of legislation passed by the then-Democratic-controlled Legislature in 2023, and then signed by Whitmer, requiring individuals to keep firearms “unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container if it is reasonably known that a minor is or is likely to be present on the premises.”
According to a release by Whitmer’s office, an estimated 150,000 Michigan children currently live in homes that have an unsecured firearm, while more than 70% of school shootings nationally involve a firearm that is owned by a parent or close family member and taken by the shooter.
That was the case in the 2021 Oxford High School shooting, in which a 15-year-old student used a handgun purchased by his parents to murder four fellow students. The teen was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole while his parents were also found criminally responsible and sentenced to prison terms for making a firearm readily available despite warning signs that he was planning the shooting.
“Michigan has seen far too many school shootings. Last term, Democrats passed a number of monumental laws that help curb gun violence throughout the state. Our kids, teachers and families deserve safety and security at home and in their classrooms,” said MacDonell. “With this bill becoming law, Michigan schools will now provide helpful resources on Michigan’s new firearm safety measures — which continue efforts to keep our children and communities safe from reckless firearms use.”
Chandra Madafferi, president and CEO of the Michigan Education Association, said that studentsand educators need to feel safe in the state’s schools, and the bills were an important step to making that a reality.
“By making sure families are aware of the best ways to keep guns stored safely, schools can be part of the solution in preventing firearms from falling into the wrong hands,” she said.

Other school safety bills signed Wednesday include House Bills 4095 and 4096, sponsored by state Reprs.Stephanie A. Young (D-Detroit) and Ranjeev Puri (D-Canton), respectively, which require standardized terminology used by schools in response to emergency situations. House Bills 5659 and 5660, sponsored by state Reps. Luke Meerman (R-Coopersville) and Nancy DeBoer (R-Holland), respectively, create the new School Safety and Mental Health Commission in the Department of State Police.
The new commission will focus on improving mental health outcomes for school-aged children, adolescents, and their families, as well as reducing youth suicide rates in Michigan.
In conjunction with those bills, Whitmer also issued Executive Order 2025-1 which delineates the makeup of the commission to include at least one member who is a prosecutor., as well the director of the Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential (MiLEAP), or their designee.
Additionally, the executive order gives the ex officio members of the board (the directors of MSP, DHHS, MiLEAP and the superintendent of public instruction) voting rights on the commission and adds the duties of the former School Safety Commission to the new commission.
House Bill 5549, sponsored by state Rep. Kelly Breen (D-Novi), creates a behavior threat assessment and management team to monitor concerning student behavior and devise supportive measures to mitigate potential threats.
House Bills 6144, 6145, and 6146, sponsored by state former Rep. Felicia Brabec (D-Pittsfield Twp.) and Rep. Natalie Price (D-Berkley), respectively, require the Michigan State Police (MSP) to destroy all firearms turned over to it that were purchased under a gun buyback program.
“This legislation ensures when we destroy a firearm, our current practice of destroying all parts of the firearm will remain the standard now and for the future,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP.
Meanwhile, House Bills 5887 and 5888, sponsored by state Reps. John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) and Kara Hope (D-Holt) respectively, create specific criminal penalties for sextortion, in which an individual blackmails others, threatening to distribute sexually explicit photographs or videos of another person.
Jordan DeMay, 17, took his life in 2022 after international criminals tricked him into sending explicit photos for the purpose of sexually extorting him. His father, John DeMay, lobbied hard for the legislation.
“The law enforcement community is calling this an epidemic, and it really is, because the detectives are getting bombarded with this stuff. It’s just every day on their desk, and there’s a lot of it goes unreported,” DeMay told the Michigan Advance when the bills passed the House in December.
The bills also define sentencing guidelines for the crimes.
House Bill 4485, sponsored by state Rep. Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Twp.), extends the time for filing an indictment of criminal sexual conduct (CSC) charges in the second or third degree. Under the bill, an indictment for CSC in the second or third degree could be found and filed by the victim’s 42nd birthday, regardless of when the offense occurred.
Supporters say the legislation will also reduce the danger of sexual violence against children by holding sex offenders accountable under an increased statute of limitations.
House Bill 6046, sponsored by state Rep. Christine Morse (D-Texas Twp.), ensures eligible providers working to offer community violence intervention services can utilize Medicaid to cover the cost. The bill also establishes a certification pathway and training requirements for violence prevention professionals.
House Bill 4173 and 4384, sponsored by state Reps. Abraham Aiyash (D-Hamtramck) and Luke Meerman (R-Coopersville), respectively, create the Michigan Sentencing Commission, which will support criminal justice reform in Michigan by recommending sentencing updates that reflect prevailing opinions towards reform and rehabilitation.
House Bill 5695, sponsored by state Rep. Mike McFall (D-Hazel Park), will increase the financial support available to local municipalities that provide ground ambulance services to individuals relying on Medicaid. The bill authorizes a supplemental federal reimbursement program to enhance the financial stability of public ambulance service providers.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed several important bills into law today, addressing hate crimes, school safety, and sextortion.
The hate crime bill expands protections for victims targeted because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. This bill sends a strong message that discrimination and violence will not be tolerated in our state.
The school safety bill provides funding for increased security measures in schools, such as hiring more resource officers and implementing safety training programs for staff and students. This legislation is a crucial step in ensuring that our children can learn and thrive in a safe environment.
Finally, the sextortion bill makes it a crime to use threats of releasing explicit images or videos to coerce individuals into performing sexual acts. This law is a significant victory for victims of this heinous crime, providing them with the legal protections they deserve.
Governor Whitmer’s actions today demonstrate her commitment to protecting the safety and well-being of all Michigan residents. These bills are a crucial step forward in creating a more inclusive, secure, and just society for all.
