    ESPN BPI is slightly less optimistic about BYU’s chances to win this game and get to 4-4 in conference play. ESPN BPI gives BYU a 64% chance to beat Cincinnati.

    Winning this game might come down to winning BYU’s ability to win its first close game of the season. With the loss to Utah last week, BYU moved to 0-4 in overtime games and games decided by five points or less.

    Losing close games has been the headline of BYU’s season thus far. When BYU has won, they’ve won big. Every single win has come by double digits.

    BYU needs to learn how to win a close game sooner rather than later. They might have their chance to do just that on Saturday night against Cincinnati.

  • Judge weighs tossing critical DNA evidence in U of Idaho murder case | News


    BOISE, Idaho — A judge will now consider whether critical DNA evidence will be thrown out in the murder case of four University of Idaho students.

    Of the thousands of pieces of evidence presented in this case, seemingly none are more crucial than the way police tested and tracked Kohberger’s whereabouts the night of the murders.

    In a hearing that stretched two days, defense attorneys pressed the judge to suppress critical evidence that prosecutors say ties Kohberger to these murders.

    On Friday, Kohberger’s team challenged the way police acquired his cell phone data the night of the murders and the weeks leading up to it.

    The defense argued that several search warrants police used to access this data was too broad, unspecific and should be tossed from the case.

    “A search warrant must be particular enough so that as to what is taken, nothing is left to the discretion of the officer executing the warrant,” Kohberger’s defense attorney argued. “The government cannot seize the haystack to search for a needle.”

    The state pushed back on the defense’s claims. 

    “Each one of them listed that they were specific to the type of crime, the location, and all but one of them had temporal limitations.” 

    The defense is hopeful to force a Franks hearing; a proceeding where the judge will decide if search warrants are dismissed from the case. If that happens, everything discovered through those warrants would not be admissible in this case.

    Friday’s arguments came after a lengthy hearing on Thursday discussing DNA.

    In the days following the murders, police tested a piece of DNA on the button snap of a knife sheath left behind at the murder scene. They first submitted it through CODIS, a database made up of DNA comprised of missing persons, cold cases and convicted criminals. No matches came from that search.

    According to the defense, the FBI then submitted it to a public genealogy database without a search warrant, which they claim violates Kohberger’s constitutional right to privacy.

    “The court should suppress the IGG identification and everything that flows from that,” said Kohberger’s attorney Anne Taylor.

    The state said there’s no case law to suggest that there is a reasonable expectation of privacy when DNA is found at a crime scene.

    If the defense is successful, this would deal a major blow to the prosecution less than eight months away from when the trial is set to begin.

    Judge Hippler has yet to make a decision on whether to throw out the DNA testing.

  • Military bids farewell to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, following release of critical OIG report


    The Inspector General slammed Austin over secrecy surrounding his 2024 hospitalization.

    ARLINGTON, Va. — To much fanfare, the U.S. military bid farewell to the nation’s 28th Secretary of Defense.

    Lloyd Austin graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1975 and went on to a 41-year career in the Army.

    Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General C.Q. Brown said Austin was a mentor.

    “From his early days as a lieutenant, Secretary Austin was a leader of the highest order,” he said.

    Then came his second act, in 2021 becoming the nation’s first Black Secretary of Defense.

    During his time Austin oversaw the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, led the more than 50-nation coalition supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia, and directed the most intense naval combat operation since World War II in the Red Sea, following the Hamas attack upon Israel.

    Austin gave all credit to the 2.8 million men and women in the military.

    “Ladies and gentlemen, I leave the Department of Defense with great pride and confidence. This final turn of duty has been a time of great pride because of the extraordinary Americans that I’ve had the great honor of leading and serving alongside,” he said.

    But, along with Austin’s departure on Friday, this week also brought a scathing report from the Defense Department’s Office of Inspector General.

    The document criticized Austin’s failure to alert the White House and his senior staff about his hospitalization in early 2024, noting that his actions risked national security “unnecessarily.”

    Austin suffered from complications after surgery for prostate cancer.

    He sought to keep his condition and the fact that he had been incapacitated while under general anesthesia secret from President Biden and Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks.

  • Pensacola crews clear ‘all 17 critical roads’ for first responders, several still closed


    PENSACOLA, Fla. — Several roads remain closed Wednesday in Pensacola following Tuesday’s winter storm.

    “The snowplows and front-end loaders worked overnight to de-ice, sand, and clear all 17 critical roads throughout the city,” the city of Pensacola said in an update Wednesday morning. “Today, our Public Works team will focus on keeping critical roadways accessible by clearing slushy-ice. Only one lane will be clear on many of the critical roads, so the public is asked to remain at home to prevent the delay of emergency responders.”

    Here are the current road closures:

    • 12th Ave. between Bayou Blvd and Fairfield Dr.
    • Davis Highway between Airport Boulevard and Langley Avenue.
    • 17th Ave at the railroad trestle
    • 9th Ave. between Bayou Blvd. and Royce St.
    • Chappie James Jr. Bridge (Pensacola Bay Bridge)

    City of Pensacola offices and facilities will remain closed and continue operating at reduced capacity on Thursday.

    “We are taking a close look at weather and road conditions for the remainder of the week and will have updates as they become available,” the city says.

    Believe it or not, I’ve actually been to Bologna.

    Growing up in a house with a lot of Italian heritage, I had the privilege of a visit to the home country in my formative years. My parents found the funds for enough Alitalia flights from Dulles airport to Rome when I was about nine years old, and I had my first taste of European culture.

    We found ourselves in Bologna waiting for a train, heading somewhere I certainly can’t remember, nor do I remember where we were coming from. What I do remember was wandering outside the train station to a small pizzeria in a piazza near the station. It was, simply put, the best pizza I’ve ever had.

    That’s the thing about Italy, every piece of pizza is the best you’ve ever had. But it’s the ones you need that go a step beyond. I must have been hungry.

    Why have I spent so long talking about Bologna and pizza? I do not want to talk about Borussia Dortmund or Nuri Sahin right now.

    I hope you, reader, like me, can use this opportunity to think about pizza instead of the game.

    Player to Watch: Ricardo Orsolini

    Bologna’s right-midfielder has been in fine form for his side, notching seven goals and three assists in 17 performances. Orsolini is a cut-in winger, looking to collect the ball in the half-space between the midfield and the back line and use a turn of pace to drift across the box and find the opposite corner. Sound familiar?

    Orsolini is also a capable finisher from distance and the dead-ball, something BVB have not faced often this season. The back line must be wary of how much space Orsolini is given to work in.

    Predicted Lineup

    It’s the last match to save your job, so you’re starting Can, right? You have to be starting Can.

    I do not think Sahin is willing to play Can at the six any further, so expect Il Capitano to roll out in the center-back spot. Otherwise we should see something typical, with the exception of Ryerson filling in for Bensebaini, who is suspended.

    Okay, let’s get realistic for a few sentences here. Dortmund should beat Bologna. The Italians have taken a single point in this UCL campaign and sit seventh in the highly competitive Serie A. If Dortmund are tossed around in a UCL match by a side like Bologna, it’s time to start the inquest.

    Despite extensive advertising and securing President Biden’s final television interview of his term, MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell’s interview ratings lost out in a major demographic to comedy shows and reruns on other platforms.

    O’Donnell’s interview with Biden that took up the show’s hour drew 1.2 million total viewers and just 97,000 in the critical 25-54 age demographic.

    Repeats of “Seinfeld,” “Family Guy”, “Friends,” “The Office,” as well as an episode of “South Park” were some of the shows that won over MSNBC’s interview with people between the ages of 25-54.

    During the 10 p.m. ET hour, when O’Donnell’s interview with Biden aired, Fox News Channel commanded a 68% share of total cable news viewers and 71% among viewers between the ages of 25-54, while MSNBC had 23% and 15%, respectively.

    O’Donnell’s show was also down 41% in total viewers, down 45% with A25-54 and down 38% with A18-49 from Dec. 2023 to Dec. 2024. O’Donnell was down 19% with total viewers, down 13% with ages 25-54 and down 85% with ages 18-49 from quarter 4 of 2023 to quarter 4 of 2024.

    It is hard to conceive that a team that had such high expectations and finished with three or even four wins would keep the status quo going forward. 

    With ‘Black Monday’ fast approaching next week, what will happen?

    Many fans think that both Berry and Stefanski should be let go or at least one of them. If the choice is made to let one or both go, who replaces them?

    The Browns have been guilty of firing a coach or general manager without having an upgrade replacement lined up and after going through a long and arduous search process, end up with their third-, fourth- or even fifth-choice. 

    Mike Vrabel, who is already being talked about as a high target on NFL team’s search list, spent the season as a consultant with the Browns and he would have seemed to be an obvious choice to replace Stefanski, if the owners wanted to make a change. 

    Now, that Vrabel’s contract with the Browns has ended, it is likely he will explore what other opportunities are out there for him. 

    Typically, general managers hire head coaches, but Stefanski was hired before Berry and both report to the ownership. Both Berry and Stefanski were given contract extensions together prior to the 2024 season with one year still on their original contracts. 

    If Berry has any say in a possible firing of Stefanski, he did not sound as though that was a possibility when he addressed the media on Nov. 6 during the team’s bye week, when the Browns were 2-7.

    Berry was asked if he and Stefanski were concerned they would not be able to see their plans through. 

    “I’ll be honest, neither of us really think of it that way,” Berry said. “I’d say number one, to myself, I always view myself as a steward of the organization in this role and really my focus is on doing the things that are in my control, short-term and long-term, to make sure it’s in the best interest of the franchise.
