Kumbh Mela: Worshippers feared killed in crowd crush at huge Indian religious festival
Serious questions being asked about what went wrongpublished at 01:36 Greenwich Mean Time

It was absolute chaos at the river bank. People’s belongings, clothes, shoes, blankets and backpacks were strewn all around. Listless bodies could be seen among the discarded belongings.
There was an information vacuum, no-one knew what had happened or what was going on.
I saw one woman walking in front of a stretcher in tears, clearly bereft. Another man walked beside a stretcher, trying to cover the body with a shawl.
This all happened at the main bathing point. Exactly where officials knew the most number of people would converge especially on this bathing day.
Serious questions will be asked about what went wrong.
As of now, officials are not confirming the number of dead or injured.
The recent tragedy at the Kumbh Mela festival in India has left worshippers and participants in shock and mourning. Reports have emerged of a crowd crush that resulted in several deaths and injuries, sparking fear and chaos among the attendees. The Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, with millions of people flocking to the banks of the Ganges River to participate in the sacred rituals and ceremonies. However, the sheer magnitude of the event can sometimes lead to overcrowding and dangerous situations, as was tragically demonstrated in this recent incident.
Authorities are working to provide assistance to those affected and investigate the cause of the crowd crush. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
As we reflect on this heartbreaking event, let us also remember the importance of safety and crowd management in large gatherings, and strive to prevent such tragedies from happening again in the future.

Justin Timberlake has surprising reaction when he spots *NSYNC members in concert crowd
Justin Timberlake was saying hi hi hi to his former *NSYNC bandmates.
The singer, 43, had some surprise guests in the audience while performing at the Thousand Palms, California, stop of his Forget Tomorrow World Tour.
JC Chasez, Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick showed up to Timberlake’s concert, as seen in Bass’ Tuesday TikTok video.

The footage shows the artist onstage as he spots the trio in the crowd.
“Why didn’t you guys text me?” Timberlake mouths before laughing and moving to another part of the stage.
The clip cuts to Bass dancing, with the text reading: “On second thought, maybe we should have texted Justin before we showed up.”
Bass, 45, Chasez, 48, and Kirkpatrick, 53, continued to dance together in the audience as Timberlake performed onstage.

Missing from the action? Joey Fatone, 47, who’s currently on Broadway. His debut as Lance in “& Juliet” was Tuesday, taking over from actor Paulo Szot.
“In honor of Joey’s Broadway debut tonight,” Bass playfully wrote in the caption, “we had a date night without him.”
Bass also shared footage of the night on Instagram, with a photo of the four former boy-banders backstage at Timberlake’s show, plus a promotional pic announcing Fatone’s “& Juliet” run. “You guys are the sweetest I appreciate it !!!!” the thespian commented.

Fatone then shared his own Instagram post, photoshopping himself into the reunion pic.
“Thank you, Chris for putting me in the photo,” Fatone captioned the cheeky shot. “It is perfect! I was definitely there in spirit!”
Last week, Fatone told The Post that the group needs to “have a conversation” about a future reunion.

“That’s really what it boils down to. And we’re gonna hopefully do that soon. We keep saying soon, but it’s getting where it’s like either s—t or get off the pot,” he said. “Let’s be real.”
And with the 25th anniversary of *NSYNC’s blockbuster album “No Strings Attached” coming up in March, Fatone thinks that it’s time for “that moment of the five of us sitting down going, ‘OK, what does this look like? Do we want to do a tour? Is it just a tour? Is it an album? Is it an EP? Are we not going to do anything? Like, what exactly are we going to do?’”

Chasez would also be down for a reunion.
“You go where inspiration is, right?” he said during a November appearance on the “LadyGang” podcast. “I’m not one of those people that fakes it very well. Whenever I’ve tried to fake it, I’ve always felt s–tty about it, to be honest with you.”
But in July, TMZ reported that Timberlake was allegedly the big holdout on a reunion tour.

The outlet claimed that insiders revealed the “SexyBack” star and his team did not respond to multiple proposals for an *NSYNC stadium tour this summer, despite the other members showing interest.
Justin Timberlake, former member of *NSYNC, had a surprising reaction when he spotted his former bandmates in the crowd at his recent concert.During a performance of one of his hit songs, Timberlake paused mid-song and pointed into the audience. The crowd erupted in cheers as Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, and Chris Kirkpatrick were shown on the big screen, smiling and waving at their former bandmate.
Timberlake couldn’t contain his excitement and invited his former bandmates to join him on stage. The group performed a medley of *NSYNC hits, much to the delight of the audience.
Fans were thrilled to see the reunion of the iconic boy band and the camaraderie between the members was evident as they shared the stage once again.
It was a heartwarming moment that reminded everyone of the special bond between *NSYNC members, and left fans hoping for more reunions in the future.

Police in Langley, B.C., say they had to use pepper spray and a Taser as they dealt with an “unruly” crowd of young people at an illegal street racing event in the city Friday night.
Langley RCMP say an officer responding to a call on Gloucester Way arrived to find a crowd of around 200 young people allegedly in the area to “participate in illegal street racing and stunting.”
Mounties say the officer wrote violation tickets and was having a vehicle towed when the crowd allegedly “became unruly.” Police allege a 16-year-old male tried to obstruct the officer, who had also called for backup.
Police say officers had to use a Taser on the teen, and that a group of young people then allegedly tried to interfere with his arrest, leading to officers using pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
They say people in the crowd managed to free the suspect from a police vehicle, but he was later found by a police dog, and is now up on charges for allegedly assaulting an officer.
Last September, Langley Township council voted to look into anti-street-racing measures in the area. (Arthur White-Crummey/CBC) Township of Langley Mayor Eric Woodward said street racing remains a persistent issue in the community and called the incident “very unfortunate.”
“No RCMP officer should be interfered with or obstructed in this manner,” he wrote in a statement to CBC News. “We support the RCMP in their ongoing efforts to address it.”
The mayor added that the township initiated traffic calming measures in Gloucester Industrial Estates last September to address the problem, which he says endangers truckers and workers operating overnight.
Supt. Harm Dosange, who heads the Langley RCMP detachment, says the altercation was “deeply troubling” and that there will be more police patrols and traffic enforcement in the area because street racers pose a “significant risk” to the public and police.
Langley RCMP had their hands full over the weekend as they were called to break up an ‘unruly’ crowd of 200 young people at an illegal street racing event. The event, which took place in a secluded area of Langley, quickly spiraled out of control as participants began engaging in dangerous stunts and driving recklessly. Concerned residents in the area notified authorities, prompting a swift response from the RCMP.
Upon arrival, officers were met with resistance from the crowd, who refused to disperse and continued their reckless behavior. Police were forced to use pepper spray and physical force to break up the gathering and restore order.
Several individuals were arrested for various offenses, including reckless driving and public intoxication. The RCMP has issued a warning to anyone considering participating in illegal street racing events, emphasizing the dangers posed to both participants and the public.
Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to the authorities and to avoid engaging in or attending illegal street racing events. The safety of the community is paramount, and the RCMP will continue to take swift action to ensure the well-being of all residents.

Winning 15 of their last 16 games, the Bluejays’ have dominated, the only exception to a perfect 16-game record came in the Bluejays’ loss to #1 UCLA on the road.Bringing the firepower to the Creighton offense are Morgan Maly and Lauren Jensen. The two veterans consistently deliver double digit point performances to bolster the Bluejay offense, with Maly averaging 17.9 points per game and Jensen following just behind with 17.7 points per game.
Preparing to face the Connecticut Huskies for the 10th time since 2014, the Bluejays enter the matchup with a seven-game win streak and perfect record in conference play. Though the Bluejays have yet to take down the Huskies at D.J Sokol arena in the last 10 years, this season Creighton holds a perfect 6-0 record on their home floor.
Creighton Continues to Raise Funds for the Hope Lodge
The annual Creighton vs. Cancer Pink Out, presented by Methodist and CHI Health, will take place on January 25th, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. For the first time, Creighton will host both Pink Outs on the same day as part of a doubleheader that will see the men’s basketball team face Seton Hall at 12:30 p.m., followed by the women’s basketball team hosting Connecticut at 4:30 p.m. Both games will take place at CHI Health Center Omaha.Bluejay players will wear pink shooting shirts and pink-accented jerseys for each game. More than just a roof over their heads, it’s a nurturing community that helps patients access the care they need.
The annual Creighton University Pink Out athletic events have combined to nearly $1,000,000 to benefit the Hope Lodge facility here in Omaha and the guests it serves, with over $468,000 of that coming from the jersey auctions.
Maly Approaching Bluejays’ Three-Point Record
The anticipated matchup with the Connecticut Huskies could hold more implications for Morgan Maly and the Bluejays than just another crucial win in competitive BIG EAST Play. Veteran sharpshooter Maly sits just three triples away from tying the record for most three-point field goals made.As it stands, Kathy Halligan holds the title, with 309 three-point field goals made in her time as a Bluejay from 1988-92. Ahead of the contest with the Huskies, Maly currently boasts 306 made triples, needing three more to tie and four to pass Halligan.
Also of note, veteran guard Lauren Jensen sits in as fifth, with 266 made three-pointers since coming to Creighton in 2021.
Treys Are Automatic For Maly Senior Morgan Maly has a streak of games with at least one three pointer is 39 straight games, dating back to Dec. 30, 2023 when she went 0-for-5 against St. John’s. In her 136 games Morgan has hit at least one three-ball in 127 games.

Indy Ignite get another big crowd, including Caitlin Clark for night 2
FISHERS – “Light it up! Light it up!”
With the Indy Ignite one set away from an unbeaten start to their inaugural season Thursday night, the chant, which began as a spark, caught fire in the upper deck and spread rapidly throughout the Fishers Event Center.
A mantra embraced by fans since the team’s home-opening victory this past Saturday, the Ignite showed their appreciation for the 4,035 in attendance with a fervent third-set win to complete the sweep of the Grand Rapids Rise 25-18, 28-26, 25-18.
‘Absolutely a volleyball state:’Ignite sells out home opener at Fishers Event Center
A Carmel HS star, an NCAA champ:Meet women of Indy’s new pro volleyball team
The Ignite (2-0) rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit before turning up the heat, winning their sixth straight set since defeating the Orlando Valkyries in front of a sellout crowd of 6,089 six days ago.
Unlike their season opener however, the Ignite showed few jitters, only focus, and their fans, including Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark sitting courtside, had their backs.
“I think we did a great job just coming off the bounce from the last match. Obviously, the first set was a little rough, and I felt like we wanted to come out strong,” Ignite middle back Caroline Crawford said. “I don’t think this team is really focused on how many sets we’re winning. We’re just trying to get better each day.”
Statistically, the Ignite continue to impress.
Crawford’s two aces paired with outside hitter Leketor Member-Meneh’s two aces, 11 digs and team-high 17 kills fueled the Ignite’s 66 total points. Middle back Azhani Tealer’s 10 kills and rookie Nina Cajic’s 16 kills and two aces for 19 points were key.
Former Yorktown High School standout Kyle Murr logged a team-best 12 digs as the starting libero, while setter Sydney Hilley connected for 44 assists.
“This is the way volleyball is meant to be played. You don’t know where the ball is going, and Syd is doing an awesome job of dishing. When Leks is getting a lot of focus on her, it makes it easy to throw it back to Caroline or me. That’s what makes the game really fun, and it’s easy when they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing,” Tealer said.
“Not to be cliché, but we’re kind of some dogs. We’re ready to fight whenever it comes down to it, and we’re not just going to be walked on.”
The Ignite aren’t being slept on either based on the midweek crowd’s age range stretching from adults to grade schoolers.
Hosting an autograph session in the concourse following the win, fans lined up in the hundreds, as Murr and other Ignite players signed t-shirts, volleyballs and pictures until everyone left with a memory in hand.
Member-Meneh jogged from the court through the concourse and past the line on her way to the postgame news conference but stopped as a group of supporters waved her down.
Erika Mimms and April Harris of Indianapolis attended the game with their teenage daughters. They spotted Member-Meneh through the dense sea of people, and their girls, who each compete for Munciana Indy, called her over.
“Yeah, we saw her, and she said, ‘Sure!,’” Erika Mimms said. “Our girls play volleyball, and they’re big fans. She does an awesome job. They were excited to see her, and we’re No. 1 fans. She’s very friendly, very personable. It’s awesome. It made their day.”
Member-Meneh shared the sentiment.
Winning is the focus for her and the Ignite, who currently are tied for first with the defending Pro Volleyball Federation champion Omaha Supernovas, but the real victories are moments like these.
“I love them. I really do. I love them. Volleyball wouldn’t be volleyball if it wasn’t for our fans. Everyone knows it’s a huge game of momentum and having people cheering for you and rooting for you. You’re playing for something bigger than yourself,” Member-Meneh said.
“I am absolutely in awe of what Indiana has brought to our arena in the Fishers Event Center even on a Thursday night. Everyone is still showing out. Everyone is packing in. The energy is good, and they just make all of us want to play even harder for them. It’s like they’re friends. I don’t even think of them as fans. They’re friends.”
The Ignite are becoming local heroes much like the Fever and Clark, and with Indiana natives on the roster in Murr and Carmel’s Carly Skjodt, it’s easy to understand. Former Purdue Boilermakers Blake Mohler and Grace Wade add to the connection.
Former Indianapolis high school star Raven Colvin, who didn’t play Thursday, is on the Grand Rapids roster, which Harris and Mimms both acknowledged.
With PVF players allotted one-year contract flexibility through the league’s first two seasons, many have been able to compete near or for teams close to home via free agency.
“I was one of the lucky ones. I wanted to go home. I played in San Diego last year, and I kind of told (Grand Rapids coach) Cathy (George) going into this season that I wanted to come home, and I think you find that kind of across the board,” said Rise outside hitter Ali Bastianelli, a Marysville, Mich. native. “You see Omaha got a few Nebraska girls. Indy has a few girls from this area. You’re seeing across the board that girls get to go home, play for their hometowns, and again, that’s incredible for the success of the league.”
The Ignite are one of eight teams in the PVF and lone expansion team in 2025 with the goal of pursuing victory, empowering women and serving the community.
They achieved their goal just two games into the season.
“It inspires (girls) so much, and they also aspire because they want to play in college, so to also have a pro team is awesome. We have basketball and other sports like football, but volleyball is something you don’t really see as much,” Mimms said. “Now, they have a pro team and something to aspire for and to drive them in the sport that they love.”
If the trend continues, the Ignite might become household names like Clark.
“It was pretty sick,” Tealer remarked on Clark’s appearance. “Probably one of the most popular people in the world in the past year, so we’re glad she came. She’s always welcome back, obviously.”

BOZICH | Season’s largest crowd celebrates Louisville’s 8th straight win, 81-67, over Virginia | Louisville Sports
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — They were standing and making relentless noise in the forgotten seats at the KFC Yum! Center Saturday afternoon.
The seats that have been unnecessary for three, four or five seasons at the downtown arena. Up in section 319, tucked behind the northeast video boards. And in section 330, behind the south end basket.
“They’re loud, aren’t they?” Louisville athletic director Josh Heird said as he made his way off the floor midway through the first half of the Cards’ 81-67 victory over Virginia.
Yes, they were loud — and they were everywhere, including every corner of the upper arena. The announced attendance was 18,233, the largest announced number for a U of L men’s home game since January 2022.
If you’re scoring at home, the largest crowd last season was 17,293. But that was mostly Kentucky fans. The largest crowd for a non-UK game was 12,620 for Duke.
This was as loud and as joyous as people have been in this building since … 2021 … 2017 … you decide.
Heird was on the court for the timeout ceremony to recognize former U of L athletic director Bill Olsen, who was honored by having the court named for him at the basketball practice facility.
That was one of a string of moments when the building percolated with the energy that bubbled in Freedom Hall when Olsen, first as an assistant coach and later as an AD, teamed with Denny Crum to make Louisville basketball a potent national force.
The two men could shake hands and agree that Pat Kelsey has given U of L fans a product to love again. The Cards just swept Virginia, the first time they’ve swept any ACC opponent since Louisville built Duke twice during the 2020-21 season.
They’re 14-5 overall and 7-11 in the ACC, winners of eight straight games, trailing only Duke in the conference standings.
“They’re the hottest team in the league right now,” interim Virginia coach Ron Sanchez said. “They’re playing really good basketball. They share the ball … I believe the ball has energy. The more you touch it, the better you feel.”
Reyne Smith confirmed his place as the most prolific three-point shooter in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the third most prolific shooter in the country by making 65th, 66th, 67th and 68th shots from distance on his way to scoring 19 points.
James Scott delivered 12 points and 10 rebounds. Terrance Edwards Jr. had 16, despite missing all five shots from distance. J’Vonne Hadley finished with 13.
The Cards have a one-game assignment next week, visiting SMU in Dallas Tuesday at 9 p.m.

The Louisville Cardinals continue to soar to new heights as they secure their 8th straight win with a commanding 81-67 victory over Virginia. The KFC Yum! Center was rocking with the season’s largest crowd as fans celebrated another impressive performance from their team.Louisville’s offense was firing on all cylinders, with guard Carlik Jones leading the way with 20 points and 10 assists. The Cardinals also got a strong contribution from forward Jae’Lyn Withers, who finished with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Defensively, Louisville was able to stifle Virginia’s usually potent offense, holding them to just 67 points on 39% shooting. The Cardinals’ pressure defense forced 15 turnovers and disrupted the Cavaliers’ rhythm throughout the game.
The win extends Louisville’s winning streak to 8 games, further solidifying their position as a top contender in the ACC. With momentum on their side, the Cardinals are looking like a team that no one wants to face come tournament time.
The atmosphere at the KFC Yum! Center was electric, with fans showing their support for the team in full force. It was a fitting celebration for a team that continues to exceed expectations and prove that they are a force to be reckoned with in college basketball.
As the regular season winds down and March Madness approaches, Louisville is a team to keep an eye on. With their recent success and a talented roster, the Cardinals are poised to make some noise in the postseason. Be sure to tune in and see what this team can accomplish as they look to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

Danielle Collins thanked a hostile Australian Open crowd for helping to fund her next vacation after beating its last home hope in the women’s draw.
Collins beat Destanee Aiava 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-2 to set up a third-round meeting with U.S. compatriot Madison Keys.
As the crowd booed her while she took the mic for her post-match interview, she told them that she was thinking of that “big fat pay check” on her way to victory.
“Coco and I love a good five-star vacation,” the No. 10 seed said in reference to CoCo Vandeweghe. “So part of that check is going to go towards that. So thanks for coming out here and supporting us tonight.”
At the end of the first set, Collins blew kisses to the crowd as she sat, before repeating the trick at the end of the match.
“Thanks guys, love ya,” she said on her way off court.

Later in her post-match press conference, she added: “One of the greatest things about being a professional athlete is the people that don’t like you and the people that hate you, they actually pay your bills. It’s kind of a cool concept.
“Every person that’s bought a ticket to come out here and heckle me, it’s all going towards the Danielle Collins Fund. Bring it on. I love it.”
Collins, 31, who Coco Gauff said “is always going to be Danielle,” in a recent news conference, is not the first player to give something back to the partisan crowd — Jack Draper celebrated a five-set victory over Thanasi Kokkinakis by cupping his ear to the Australians.
Collins, a finalist in Melbourne in 2022, is unwilling to cede ground to hostility from fans and players, real or imagined.
At the Paris Olympics, Collins had a tense exchange with then world No. 1 Iga Swiatek after retiring from their Olympic quarterfinal with an injury. “I just told her not to be insincere about my injury. I don’t need the fakeness,” Collins said afterwards, drawing a befuddled reaction from Swiatek.

“You feel like you’re chasing your tail sometimes with the news that you get from your doctors because it can feel like Groundhog Day,” she told The Athletic in November.
“Other times you feel like, ‘Wow, I’ve done treatment, I’ve had surgery. And yet this thing continues to be an issue.’ And you think, ‘How is it like this?’ But that’s the thing with endometriosis, it’s not this like a tangible thing that you can just fix and that it can just go away. It doesn’t really go away.”

US tennis star is dubbed ‘the most hated player in the sport’ after slapping her behind and mocking Australian Open crowd after beating local underdog
An American tennis star has been dubbed the ‘most hated player in the sport’ after she was seen slapping her backside and mocking the crowd of the Australian Open who were supporting the local underdog.
Danielle Collins’ celebrations of her victory over home hopeful Destanee Aiava were slammed as ‘lacking class.’
Collins cupped her hand to her ear and blew kisses to the crowd after beating the Australian qualifier 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 in the second round of the women’s singles event.
The American was then seen slapping her backside before rounding on home fans for booing her in a post-match interview.
‘During the match I was like, ‘while I’m out here I might as well take that big fat pay check’,’ Collins said while being booed in her on court interview.
‘We love a five star vacation, so a big part of that will go towards that.
‘So thank you guys, thanks for coming out here and supporting us tonight. Thank you guys, love you.’
Bild reported that she has become the ‘most hated player in the sport’, while Australian news site said Collins ‘lacks class.’

Collins overcame Australian qualifier Destanee Aiava in three sets before taking on the crowd
The American, the tournament 10th seed, doubled down in another interview court side.
Collins, who made the Australian Open final back in 2022, has already scooped £147,000 ($USD180,000/AU$290,000) in prize money by reaching the third round.
The 31-year-old, who reversed her decision to retire at the end of last season, doubled down on her on court comments in her press conference.
Collins said: ‘Well I’m going to be here for two hours, putting up with all these people, I might as well take the bigger pay check, right?’
‘I was super happy to do that and one of the greatest things about being a professional athlete are that the people that don’t like you and that hate you, they actually pay your bills.
‘It’s kind of a cool concept and obviously my professional career is not going to last forever and I just remind myself every day when I have that kind of stuff that they’re paying my bills.
‘Every person that has bought a ticket and has come out here to heckle me can do what they do. It’s all going towards the Danielle Collins fund. So like, yeah, bring it on I love it.’
When asked about her holiday plans, Collins expressed a desire to have a luxury trip to the Bahamas.

Collins received a backlash from some fans on social media, who labelled her ‘classless’
Tennis fans on social media were in uproar over the American’s conduct as she booked her spot in the third round
‘Me and my girlfriends we love a five-star holiday so I can guarantee that next check is going to go towards a five-star trip, hopefully to the Bahamas.
‘We like boats. Big boats. We like yachts. Yeah, we’ll post about it and let you guys know how it goes.’
Australian news site News.com.au pointed out that Destanee Aiava has openly admitted to struggling financially.
The world no.165 said after her qualifying and Round 1 victories gave her prize money of more than $200,000: ‘It means that I can bring someone to travel with this year, and I can afford to actually go to all the tournaments that I want to.
‘Financially tennis is so expensive. I struggle travelling on my own. The fact that I get to bring my fiancee with me and hopefully one of my family members to the big ones, it makes a world of a difference.’
Collins decision to hit back at the Australian crowd received was slammed by some on social media.
‘Does Danielle Collins not realise she is playing an Australian in Australia?’ one post read.
‘What does she expect the crowd to do? They’re going to support the home player, get over it.
‘Zero class from Collins tonight’.
Another added ‘Danielle Collins. Through to the next round without a semblance of class.’
Collins will now face an all-American match against Madison Keys in the third round of the tournament.
