  • While Other NFL Coaching Hires are in States of Chaos, Let’s Appreciate How the Patriots are Have Been Crushing It

    Billie Weiss. Getty Images.

I believe it was Voltaire who said, “I ask God for but one wish, and it is that my enemies be absurd.” Personally, I also ask for a head coach who’s competent, experienced, universally respected and a proven winner. And I have that. So I’ll turn my attention to the first wish, and be grateful that so many of our enemies are wallowing in absurdity of their own making.

    In Dallas:

    Tampa:

New York, where they got the man they wanted but have no idea what the quarterback situation will be:

Las Vegas, where they just pulled a 74-year-old out of retirement:

So with that, it’s important that the good people of New England pause, take a good look around at the chaos other fanbases are being subjected to, and thank the Almighty that this year, we’ve been spared. That our beneficent Creator has given us a bountiful harvest of coaches. Beginning with Mike Vrabel of course. But continuing with the staff of special people he has been assembling like a two-eyed Nick Fury. Several of whom have head coaching experience in the league:

Josh McDaniels, Offensive Coordinator. I’ve already written extensively about this hire. And for good reason. You couldn’t genetically engineer a more perfect candidate to mentor, develop and scheme for Drake Maye. A man who has gotten the best years out of a vast array of quarterbacks, from Alpha Tom Brady to Omega Mac Jones, with Betas like Jimmy Garropolo and Jacoby Brissett in between. Who has designed offenses around QBs with skillsets as diverse as Cam Newton’s and Derek Carr’s. Who in his last season in Foxboro had an offense run by a rookie Mac Jones sixth in the league in points. By way of perspective, since he left they’ve finished 17th, 31st and 30th. And to repeat the obvious, no matter how successful he is with Maye, no one’s going to hire him away as their head coach. That ship has sailed and is not returning to port.

Terrell Williams, Defensive Coordinator. More of an unknown factor since this is his first time in the position, Williams has the all the benefit of any doubts due to the fact he was on Vrabel’s staff in Tennessee, was named his Assistant Head Coach, and was handed the playsheet and headset as Head Coach for a preseason game. He’s got the respect of everyone he worked with in Detroit. And seems to have exactly the philosophy this defense needs after dropping from eighth best in the league in 2023 to 22nd last year. A year in which the previous head coach called his team “soft.”

John Streicher, Ernie Adams’ Job, whatever you call it. The only reason I’m disappointed Streicher already comes with a ready made nickname, for obvious reasons:

… is that it’s going to make it harder to awkwardly shoehorn in references to Ted Striker from Airplane! into every Knee Jerk Reactions column. Oh well. Them’s the breaks of the blogging game. But again, here’s another hire Vrabel has vast experience working with. As has one of the best head coaches in football, who didn’t give up his services willingly:

When you can poach your assistants from a playoff team with a Super Bowl champion coach and get him to come to a 4-13 team in a rebuild, that has to be because you’ve got a special relationship with the man. This is again a reminder of the dangers of promoting someone to Head Coach who hasn’t been around the league, and doesn’t have a ton of names in his phone’s Contacts list.

Doug Marrone, Offensive Line (probably). More than any other position on the coaching staff, this one has been the hardest to fill. Dante Scarnecchia has proven to be to the Patriots what David Lee Roth was to Van Halen. They’ve carried on without him, but it’s never been the same. Marrone has, of course, been a Head Coach for almost 100 NFL games with two teams. He’s been the OC for the No. 1 offense in the league twice. And more germane to this discussion, he’s twice had the No. 1 rushing attack, once with Buffalo and again in Jacksonville. At 60 years old and with over 30 years of coaching on his resume, he  understands exactly what it takes to put together a top O-line:

Just as importantly, he’s a man who can appreciate fatty, processed, sodium-enriched deli meats:

I can promise you all the days of two, three, and sometimes even four False Start penalties a game are over in Foxboro.

Ashton Grant, Quarterbacks. The hiring of Grant represents another benefit of Vrabel spending last season underemployed, kicking around Cleveland looking to help out in any way possible. So unlike Jerod Mayo having to hired Alex Van Pelt after interviewing a dozen candidates and TC McCartney as QB Coach because Van Pelt recommended him, Vrabel knows this guy because he worked alongside him for a season.

Grant wore different hats in Cleveland, with vaguely defined titles like “Assistant” and “Quality Control” before taking over as QB Coach in a season where the Browns had four different starters, none of them especially good. Unless you count that game at Denver in which Jameis Winston threw for six touchdowns, which I don’t because two of them were scored by Broncos. But still, that’s a decent amount of experience for a young guy working his way up the coaching ladder. And Vrabel trusts him to work well under McDaniels, which should work for all of us.

Thomas Brown, Tight Ends/Passing Game Coordinator. Brown went 1-4 after being given a battlefield promotion in Chicago:

He’s been the Passing Game Coordinator on the 2024 Bears and OC on the 2023 Panthers, two teams which share the distinction of being 32nd in the league in yards. Which is not ideal. But as Tight Ends Coach, he got career highs out of Cole Kmet in passer rating when targeted with 119.2, success rate with 70.9%, and catch rate, with 85.5%. The Bears offense had a million problems, but Brown’s tight end group wasn’t among them. And Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper should benefit.

Jeremy Springer, Special Teams. Oftentimes, the best change is the one you don’t make. Under Springer’s guidance, the Pats special teams went from 20th in the league in Pro Football Focus grade in 2023 to No. 2. He turned Brendan Schooler into a Pro Bowler. And, if nothing else, he gave a masterclass in how to respond when a fanbase’s frustration boils over and they let you know they’re tired of watching one of the worst teams in the league:

I would’ve hated it if Vrabel made a change just for the sake of change. If it ain’t broke, and all that.

All in all, this is a hell of a way to put a staff together. One of the many benefits of Mr. Kraft not dicking around and making the swift yet painful decision to cut ties with Mayo the minute the season ended. Unlike what’s been playing out around the league, we’re already benefiting from it. Prayers are being answered.

As NFL coaching changes continue to dominate headlines with teams in disarray, one organization stands out among the chaos – the New England Patriots.

While other teams are still scrambling to find their next head coach or fill out their coaching staff, the Patriots have been quietly and efficiently making moves to solidify their coaching roster. From promoting from within to bringing in new faces with impressive resumes, the Patriots have been crushing it in the coaching department.

One notable move was promoting defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to head coach after the departure of Bill Belichick. Patricia, a longtime assistant under Belichick, has proven himself as a capable leader and defensive mastermind. The Patriots also added former players turned coaches like Jerod Mayo and Troy Brown to their staff, bringing in fresh perspectives and a deep understanding of the Patriots’ winning culture.

While other teams may be in disarray with hasty coaching hires and internal power struggles, the Patriots have remained steady and focused on building a strong coaching staff. Their attention to detail and commitment to excellence have set them apart in a league where coaching stability is often hard to come by.

So while chaos may reign in other NFL coaching circles, let’s take a moment to appreciate the Patriots and their ability to keep crushing it in the coaching department. With a solid coaching staff in place, the Patriots are poised to continue their winning ways and remain a force to be reckoned with in the NFL.

  • Tampa Bay Rays Infielder Absolutely Crushing It in Winter Ball

After an up-and-down season in the big leagues in 2024, Tampa Bay Rays infielder Junior Caminero is putting together a great season in the Dominican Winter League.

Per the @MLB account on “X:”

Junior Caminero is raking in LIDOM and providing some electric home run celebrations

Through 15 LIDOM Round Robin postseason games, the former No. 1 overall prospect is hitting .448 with a 1.285 OPS, 12 extra-base hits, and 14 RBI.

Caminero, the former No. 1 prospect in the sport, played 43 games for the Rays in 2024, posting a 0.7 WAR. He hit .248 with six homers and 18 RBI. He figures to play a more prominent role in 2025, especially as Wander Franco’s legal situation continues to keep him from playing in Major League Baseball.

Having debuted in 2023, Caminero has played in 50 games for the Rays. He’s joined by Jonathan Aranda, Oslevis Basabe, Jose Caballero, Yandy Diaz, Brandon Lowe, Curtis Mead, Christopher Morel, Richie Palacios and Taylor Walls as infielders on the 40-man roster.

The Rays are coming off a season in which they went 80-82, finishing fourth in the American League East and missing the playoffs.

Though they will play the 2025 season at Steinbrenner Field, the Rays should continue to be competitive. They will get ace pitcher Shane McClanahan back from injury, strengthening the rotation. They should also get a full year from Drew Rasmussen and Shane Baz, who are back and healthy from their own injury issues.

Spring training begins in three weeks.

  • Did George Kittle Crushing Beers Just Become The Predators Good Luck Charm?

It has been a rough season for the Nashville Predators, but it’s nothing San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle and a nice, $15 arena brewski can’t solve.

The Preds have been in the middle of a nightmare season, despite a busy offseason that had some (*sheepishly raises hand*) thinking they could be one of the contenders in the Central Division.

However, this is a franchise that needs a little bit of magic to get rolling. Remember last season? They ripped through the spring after canceling plans to see a U2 concert at The Sphere in Las Vegas.

Well, I think we may have found something to kickstart the team and give them a little mojo for another run down the stretch.

The aforementioned Kittle spends his offseasons in Music City, and he’s a big Predators fan. He was on hand to watch them take on the Chicago Blackhawks (one of the few teams in hockey worse than them) on Thursday night.

The game was scoreless in the first period when the Predators went on a power play. They set up shop and worked the puck over to Steven Stamkos who did his thing and rifled a puck into the back of the net from his office.

But here’s where it gets weird…

You know how you can sync up Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon to The Wizard of Oz?

Well, in a similar fashion, this power play goal synced up to George Kittle Crushing a beer in the stands.

That was magic. No other explanation.

I’ve seen a lot of beers get chugged at games. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one practically end up on the scoresheet like that.

The team should have been throwing beers at Kittle all night long because this game ended up being a bit close, but the Predators managed to win it in a shootout.

In a shocking turn of events, it seems that San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle may have inadvertently become the Nashville Predators’ good luck charm.

During a recent game between the Predators and the Chicago Blackhawks, Kittle was spotted in the stands crushing beers and getting the crowd fired up. As the game progressed, the Predators mounted an impressive comeback and ultimately secured a thrilling overtime victory.

Since then, fans have been speculating whether Kittle’s presence and beer-crushing antics could be the key to the Predators’ success. Could it be that his infectious energy and enthusiasm are rubbing off on the team, giving them the boost they need to win?

While it may be too early to say for sure, one thing is certain: George Kittle’s newfound role as the Predators’ good luck charm is definitely something to keep an eye on. Who knows, maybe we’ll see him at more games in the future, leading the charge and cheering on the team to victory.

  • Penn State players sound off on the best crushing blocks by their teammates this season

Penn State players sound off on the best crushing blocks by their teammates this season

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Penn State’s run game has been in the spotlight in recent weeks, and it will be a major storyline in the Nittany Lions’ Fiesta Bowl matchup with Boise State tonight inside State Farm Stadium.

PSU’s big fellas on the offensive – center Nick Dawkins, guards Vega Ioane and Sal Wormley and tackles Drew Shelton and Nolan Rucci – have gotten after defenders in recent weeks; and so has the Lions’ tight end group of Tyler Warren, Khalil Dinkins and Luke Reynolds.

The Lions piled up 219 yards and four scores against Maryland on the final Saturday in November, hung 292 yards and two scores on unbeaten Oregon’s defense and PSU churned for 189 yards and three touchdowns in the bitter cold vs. SMU, wearing down the Mustangs in a 38-10 triumph.

Penn State’s run game could be a real problem for the Broncos’ defense. The 2024 offensive line is arguably James Franklin’s best one in his 11 seasons in State College.

Penn State vs Minnesota, Nov. 23, 2024

Penn State offensive lineman Nolan Rucci, Sal Wormley and Nick Dawkins block Minnesota linebacker Cody Lindenberg and defensive lineman Deven Eastern during the first quarter on Nov. 23, 2024 Joe Hermitt | jhermitt@pennlive.comJoe Hermitt | jhermitt@pennlive.com

“So, this is the best one I’ve seen probably in the last, at least the last decade,” said Penn State great Matt Millen of the Lions’ O-line. Millen is in town covering the game for the Big Ten Network.

“I would do (previous PSU) games, and I would come back, and I would go, ‘They’re good but this offensive line’s horrible.’ And then I would see them at the next level (the NFL) playing really well. And I’d be, ‘What happened to you?’ I never understood it.”

But now? “They’re doing a really, really good job (this season),” Millen said of the line.

“It’s cohesive, they’re all on the same page. … What I like to watch with offensive linemen is their footwork.

“And when you see an offensive line, that they’re all taking the same steps the right way, that’s a huge sign, and that’s exactly what this group does.”

Penn State, at the prodding of new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, has also added a weekly award for the offense: The BMF belt.

It’s presented to the offensive player who does the best job of finishing blocks in the previous game. It’s a coveted award that is currently in Warren’s possession. And yes, “BMF” is short for exactly you think it means.

With that in mind, PennLive asked a couple of Penn State players about their favorite finishing blocks of the season.

The 6-4, 348-pound Ioane’s work throughout 2024 stands out. Kotelnicki has also had the guard, a second-team All-Big Ten pick, split out like a wide receiver, then go in motion back toward the middle of field to ‘crack’ on an unsuspecting defender.

    “There’s two (finishes),” Dawkins said.

“The ‘gimme’ one is Vega vs. UCLA on that crack (block) where he annihilates the guy, that’s an easy one.

“The second one, I don’t think people think about a lot but, it’s really, to a team, it’s degrading. It is (tight end) Khalil Dinkins vs. Illinois. He took a guy into the end zone and put him on his back. That’s a tight end blocking like that, and that’s huge.”

Penn State safety Jaylen Reed said there is a clear-cut No. 1 “finisher” on the team.

“Vega, man, it’s Vega,” Reed said.

“Vega finishes every single guy I see. It’s not just finishing blocks. I saw him go against the Oregon D-line, and the Oregon D-line’s got some top draft picks. Where were they at?

“They won the game, kudos to them, but Vega did a great job that game.”

Penn State players sound off on the best crushing blocks by their teammates this season

As the Penn State football season comes to a close, players are reflecting on the standout moments from the year. One aspect of the game that often goes unnoticed but is crucial to the team’s success is the blocking by teammates. Whether it’s a key block that springs a runner for a big gain or a block that protects the quarterback, these moments can be game-changing.

Several Penn State players were asked to share their thoughts on the best crushing blocks by their teammates this season. Here’s what they had to say:

    – Wide receiver Jahan Dotson: “One block that stands out to me was when our tight end, Brenton Strange, absolutely leveled a defender on a run play. It was like watching a freight train coming through. That block opened up a huge hole for our running back and allowed him to score a touchdown.”

    – Running back Keyvone Lee: “I have to give a shoutout to our offensive lineman, Rasheed Walker. He had a block in a game where he just pancaked his man. It was a thing of beauty to see a big guy like that move so fluidly and dominate his opponent.”

    – Quarterback Sean Clifford: “There have been so many great blocks this season, but one that really stood out to me was when our fullback, Tyler Warren, threw a block that completely knocked a defender off his feet. It was a perfect example of selfless teamwork and it fired up the whole offense.”

These players know that without the hard work and dedication of their teammates in the trenches, their success on the field would not be possible. The crushing blocks by their teammates this season have been a key factor in their victories, and they are grateful for the unsung heroes who make it all happen.

Crushing It!: How Great Entrepreneurs Build Their Business and Influence-and How You Can, Too

In a world where entrepreneurship is more accessible than ever, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information and advice out there. But fear not, because there are some key principles that successful entrepreneurs follow to build their businesses and create a lasting impact.

One of the most important aspects of building a successful business is having a clear vision and purpose. Great entrepreneurs know exactly what they want to achieve and they are laser-focused on making it happen. They are not afraid to take risks and push boundaries in order to make their dreams a reality.

Another key factor in building a successful business is having a strong personal brand. Great entrepreneurs know that in order to stand out in a crowded marketplace, they need to differentiate themselves from the competition. They showcase their unique strengths and talents, and they are not afraid to be authentic and vulnerable in their communication with their audience.

Building a successful business also requires a strong network of supporters and collaborators. Great entrepreneurs surround themselves with like-minded individuals who share their vision and values. They are not afraid to ask for help or seek out mentorship from those who have already achieved success in their field.

Ultimately, the key to crushing it as an entrepreneur is to have a growth mindset and a willingness to learn and adapt. Great entrepreneurs are constantly seeking out new opportunities for growth and development, and they are not afraid to pivot or change course if necessary.

So if you’re ready to take your business to the next level, take a page out of the playbook of great entrepreneurs and start crushing it today!
