Jack Flaherty contract makes it even more important for Cubs to sign Alex Bregman
It has been a boom and bust sort of offseason for the Chicago Cubs.
We can’t say Jed Hoyer has sat on his hands. The Kyle Tucker was a genuine swing for the fences — the sort of blockbuster Cubs fans pine for. Tucker finished last season with 23 home runs and 4.7 WAR in just 78 games. He’s an MVP candidate at full strength and he offers Chicago a path back to the postseason.
Hoyer even double-dipped on the former Houston Astros champs, working overtime to land Ryan Pressly. It’s fair to express concern about a past-prime closer coming off his worst season in years, but Pressly is a proven winner and he was an All-Star as recently as 2021. He’s a definite upgrade over Hector Neris, right? (Right.)
Chicago feels like the presumptive favorites in a wide-open NL Central. The Brewers are bleeding talent. The Reds are fiesty, but probably not ready. The Cardinals are in open free fall. The Pirates? Well… Bob Nutting still owns the team.
That said, the Cubs aren’t close to the National League heavyweights. The Dodgers are lapping most teams on the raw talent front. Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Arizona all made consequential additions this winter, while New York signed Juan freakin’ Soto to the largest contract in MLB history. Hoyer still has some ground to make up.
So, why not circle back to the available pool of former Astros. Alex Bregman is there for the taking and the Cubs are out of excuses.

Jack Flaherty inked a two-year, $35 million contract with the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
So what? How does that impact the Cubs?
Well, that’s incredible value for a World Series champ coming off an incredibly productive campaign. Flaherty, 29, finished the season with a 3.17 ERA and 194 strikeouts before leading an injury-ravaged, patchwork Dodgers rotation to the promised land. He was mostly brilliant in October and put together big outings when LA needed it most.
The Cubs, who need another top-line starter behind Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga, should’ve been all over Flaherty at that price. He clearly loved Detroit, to the point where a hometown discount isn’t out of the question, but the Cubs should have more money to spend than Scott Harris’ small-market Tigers. Flaherty would’ve been a genuine needle-mover for Craig Counsell’s club. There isn’t a better manager in the sport when it comes to maximizing his rotation, assuming he actually has talent to work with.
It’s hard to come up for an excuse for Chicago’s silence on the Flaherty front… unless Bregman is coming down the pipeline. If the Cubs turn around and ink Bregman to a contract, whether it’s three years with an opt out or seven years fully guaranteed, fans will forgive the Flaherty oversight. Bregman has direct connections to Tucker and Pressly, his former teammates, and he’d give the Cubs another impact bat in the middle of a lineup that needs it.
Bregman, Dansby Swanson, Nico Hoerner, and Michael Busch? That’s one heck of an infield. Chicago is not the favorite for Bregman right now, but it’s never too late to get in the mix — until it is.
The recent contract extension of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty has raised the stakes for the Chicago Cubs to secure a long-term deal with star third baseman Alex Bregman. Flaherty’s five-year, $109 million contract sets a new benchmark for young, elite players in the league, and it highlights the importance of locking up key players for the future. With Flaherty now locked in, the Cubs must prioritize signing Bregman to solidify their lineup and ensure their competitiveness in the National League Central. Bregman, a dynamic hitter and defensive standout, would be a game-changer for the Cubs and could help them maintain their position as contenders in the division.
The Cubs have already made significant moves this offseason, but securing Bregman’s services would be a major statement of their commitment to winning. With Flaherty’s contract serving as a reminder of the rising costs of top talent, the Cubs cannot afford to miss out on the opportunity to sign Bregman and solidify their roster for years to come.

BCB After Dark: Why did the Cubs sign Nicky Lopez?
Welcome to your end of the weekend, heading into the work week coffee shop where we’ve got whatever you’re looking for tonight we’ve got you covered. If you’d like a warm chai tea to get your evening going, we can do that. If you’re looking for a shot of something a little stronger, we can do that too.
One housekeeping note, Last weekend we made the accidental decision to move BCB After Dark from it’s Friday night into Saturday AM home to it’s Sunday night into Monday AM home. It went pretty well and we thought we’d try it out living here for a bit. You’ll still get two late week, late night posts — just one on a different night.
And once again we’ve been rewarded for that decision with actual news to talk about: the most Hoyer of Hoyerish signings, a light hitting utility guy [link to Bluesky]:
I need a musical break.
I couldn’t get this one out of my head earlier and figured I’d just share it here tonight:
Many of you know my day job is in competitive debate and for year’s I’d heard speculation that this song is about competitive debate. There are lots of lines that suggest it might be:
Six o’clock, T.V. hour, don’t get caught in foreign tower
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn
Lock him in uniform, book burning, bloodletting
Every motive escalate, automotive incinerate
Light a candle, light a motive, step down, step down
Watch your heel crush, crush, uh oh
This means no fear, cavalier, renegade and steering clear
A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I declineIt’s the end of the world as we know it (I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it (I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)
I feel fine (I feel fine)I bring this up mainly because I went to look it up for the umpteenth time a couple of years ago and realized that Michael Stipe had given an interview where he definitively said the song was not about competitive debate:
Garrison Lovely: “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” is one of R.E.M.’s most popular songs. It’s one of my favorites as well. There’s some speculation online that the song is about policy debate.
Michael Stipe: Those rumors are untrue. The important part of the title is “as we know it.” That’s where we find ourselves now. The current vice president described this political moment as an inflection point, which is not quite accurate. But we’re absolutely at a middle ground between two epochs that will forever be considered the before and after.
And I don’t know that we as a country are moving in the right direction. There are certainly things about who we are that are absolutely beautiful. But, these days, you have to really search to find them.
The truth seems important.
Anyway, back to the truth of the Cubs roster.
Yes, this is the same team that already employs Gage Workman, Benjamin Cowles, Vidal Bruján and Jon Berti. The team that DFA’d Luis Vazquez for Berti last week. Why on Earth does this team need a minor league deal with Nicky Lopez?
I’m sure someone is already firing up the word “insurance” in the comments, and man, I guess. He’s a reasonable defender and the 77 wRC+ he put up last season means he’ll fit right in with the other five guys who look just like him on the roster.
But is there some reason the Cubs need five guys between the MLB roster and James Triantos? I am more interested in seeing what Triantos can do than literally any of the guys I named above. But not the Cubs. The Cubs are like we need to backstop Hoerner with Berti and Berti with Bruján and Bruján with Workman and Workman with Cowles and Cowles with Lopez and then, if we really have to, Triantos can have a shot.
What is this madness? Is there really any difference between any of these guys except maybe age (which is why DFA’ing Vazquez was questionable at best, but I digress). Why are the Cubs always rearranging utility guys on the Titanic?
Have at it in the comments. Don’t forget to bus your own tables, I’d hate to leave a mess for Josh tomorrow.

The Chicago Cubs made waves in the baseball world today by signing infielder Nicky Lopez to a multi-year deal. This move has left many fans scratching their heads and wondering why the Cubs would make such a move. In this edition of BCB After Dark, we explore the reasons behind this surprising signing. One possible reason for the Cubs signing Lopez could be his strong defensive abilities. Lopez is known for his slick fielding skills and could provide solid defense at multiple infield positions. With the Cubs looking to improve their defense, Lopez could be a valuable asset in that regard.
Another reason for the signing could be Lopez’s versatility. He has experience playing both second base and shortstop, which could give the Cubs some flexibility in their lineup. With injuries and slumps being common in baseball, having a player like Lopez who can play multiple positions could prove to be a valuable asset.
Additionally, Lopez has shown flashes of potential at the plate. While he may not be a power hitter, Lopez has shown an ability to make contact and get on base. With the Cubs looking to add depth to their lineup, Lopez could be a solid addition in that regard.
Overall, while the signing of Nicky Lopez may have come as a surprise to many, there are several reasons why the Cubs may have made this move. Only time will tell if this signing pays off, but for now, it’s certainly an interesting development to keep an eye on.

Cubs, Nicky Lopez agree on Minor League deal (source)
The Cubs have agreed to a Minor League deal with free-agent infielder Nicky Lopez, a source told MLB.com. The club has not confirmed the move.
Lopez, who will turn 30 on March 13, spent last season playing second base and shortstop for the crosstown White Sox. The Naperville, Ill., native batted .241 with a .606 OPS across 445 plate appearances and owns a .626 OPS across six big league seasons split between the Royals, Braves and White Sox.
Lopez could play a vital role early in the year with second baseman Nico Hoerner’s status for Opening Day unclear after he underwent flexor tendon surgery on his right forearm on Oct. 11.
The Cubs begin their 2025 regular season in Tokyo, Japan, against the Dodgers on March 18.
The Chicago Cubs and infielder Nicky Lopez have reached an agreement on a Minor League deal, according to sources. Lopez, who was previously with the Kansas City Royals, is looking to make an impact with the Cubs organization and earn a spot on the big league roster. The 27-year-old infielder has shown promise during his time with the Royals, hitting .300 in 68 games last season. Lopez is known for his defensive abilities at second base and shortstop, making him a valuable asset for the Cubs as they look to bolster their infield depth.
With this Minor League deal, Lopez will have the opportunity to showcase his skills in Spring Training and earn a spot on the Cubs’ roster for the upcoming season. Cubs fans are excited to see what Lopez can bring to the team and are hopeful that he can make a significant contribution to the club’s success.
Stay tuned for more updates on Nicky Lopez and his journey with the Chicago Cubs as he works towards earning a spot on the big league roster.

Jed Hoyer continues to wheel and deal for the Chicago Cubs this winter.
Connected to multiple high-profile players at this point in time, the front office is weighing the decision between going “all in” this season in a loaded National League and continuing to plan for the future.
They made a move on Sunday, but it wasn’t for one of the stars.
Per Jon Heyman of The New York Post, Nick Lopez is joining the Cubs. Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports it’s on a minor league deal.
This adds another infielder to the equation as Chicago gets ready for their early Spring Training period based on them beginning the upcoming campaign in Japan against the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 18-19.
Nico Hoerner’s status for Opening Day is up in the air after undergoing offseason surgery, and while Dansby Swanson says he’ll be ready for Game 1 coming off his own injury, having insurance is never a bad thing, especially when there are already questions at third base.
Lopez isn’t an offensive wizard by any means.
Across his six Major League seasons, he’s produced a slash line of .248/.312/.314 with an OPS+ that’s 26 points below the league average.
However, with the Chicago White Sox last year, he produced his best season since his breakout in 2021 as a member of the Kansas City Royals.
Lopez slashed .241/.312/.294 with an OPS+ of 76 across his 124 games and 455 plate appearances. Nothing to write home about, but he was worth five Outs Above Average at second base and shortstop, which is certainly valuable off the bench.
The Chicago Cubs have added more depth to their infield by signing former White Sox infielder, Yolmer Sanchez. Sanchez, who spent the last six seasons with the White Sox, brings versatility and experience to the Cubs’ roster.Sanchez is known for his strong defense and ability to play multiple infield positions, including second base, third base, and shortstop. He is also a switch-hitter, which adds another dimension to the Cubs’ lineup.
With injuries and inconsistencies plaguing the Cubs’ infield in recent years, Sanchez provides a reliable option off the bench and could even compete for a starting role. His energetic playing style and leadership qualities will also be valuable in the clubhouse.
Overall, the addition of Yolmer Sanchez gives the Cubs more depth and flexibility in their infield, which could prove to be crucial as they aim to compete for a playoff spot in the upcoming season. Cubs fans should be excited to see what Sanchez brings to the team in 2022.

Report: Cubs sign infielder Nicky Lopez to minor league deal
A former White Sox infielder is heading to the North Side.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Nicky Lopez has signed a deal with the Chicago Cubs. The agreement is a minor league contract, ESPN’s Jesse Rogers later followed up.
Lopez, who turns 30 in March, was one of five players traded to the White Sox in exchange for reliever Aaron Bummer last November. Never known for his bat, the Naperville hit .241/.312/.294 with a 77 wRC+ and 0.9 fWAR in 445 plate appearances this season. As in the past, Lopez made up for that lack of production in the field.
The Naperville native was named a Gold Glove Award finalist for AL second baseman last month. In 640.1 innings at the position, Lopez logged a .989 fielding percentage, -1 defensive runs saved, four outs above average, and a 1.4 on the SABR Defensive Index. These stats didn’t stack up favorably for Lopez, as Cleveland’s Andres Giménez ultimately took home the hardware.
The last White Sox second baseman to win a Gold Glove Award was Yolmer Sanchez back in 2019. Funny enough, the fan-favorite was outrighted shortly after when the White Sox did not offer him the $6.2 million he was projected in his final year of arbitration. Lopez was estimated to earn $5.1 million in arbitration this year, which was always unlikely to be matched with the team looking to cut payroll and already having infield options in both Brooks Baldwin and Lenyn Sosa.

The Chicago Cubs have reportedly signed infielder Nicky Lopez to a minor league deal, according to a recent report.Lopez, 26, spent the past three seasons with the Kansas City Royals, where he appeared in 137 games and posted a .273 batting average. The versatile infielder has primarily played second base and shortstop but has also seen time at third base and in the outfield.
The Cubs are likely hoping that Lopez can provide depth and versatility in their infield, as well as potentially compete for a spot on the major league roster. Lopez will have the opportunity to showcase his skills in spring training and earn a spot with the team.

Chicago Cubs Reportedly Signing Infielder Nicky Lopez
When the Cubs let Luis Vazquez go last week, I wondered if they would try to replace him at Triple-A with a veteran defensive-first middle-infielder, just to have a little extra depth. Sure enough, they are: per Jon Heyman and Jesse Rogers, the Cubs are signing former White Sox infielder Nicky Lopez to a minor league deal.
Outside of one monster (BABIP-fueled) season, Lopez is a glove-only, plus-defensive depth type:
Lopez, 29, can play anywhere on the infield, and historically has been very good at all spots (outside of a very down year by DRS at shortstop last year). He is the type of guy you are very happy to have at Triple-A juuuuuuust in case, but who you probably don’t want to guarantee a bench job at this point.
I suspect Lopez will have a chance to win a bench job in Spring Training, mind you, and he may have an opt-out in his deal if he doesn’t win that job. Ideally, though, he starts the season at Iowa, and is there in case of a serious injury issue. He wouldn’t necessarily kill you as a starter if necessary, but his good defensive value wouldn’t entirely make up for the 20+% below-average bat. And on a team that has Dansby Swanson at shortstop and Nico Hoerner at second base, it’s not like you’d need to keep Lopez on the bench as a late-inning defensive replacement.
That is all to say, you can expect Lopez to just be a depth guy at this point. But he’ll be there in Spring Training, competing alongside Gage Workman, Vidal Brujan, and Jon Berti to be the primary guy at third base if/when Matt Shaw isn’t quite ready.
According to multiple sources, the Chicago Cubs are set to sign infielder Nicky Lopez to a contract. Lopez, who most recently played for the Kansas City Royals, is known for his strong defensive skills and contact hitting ability. The addition of Lopez to the Cubs’ roster is expected to bolster their infield depth and provide a steady presence in the middle infield. With his versatility to play both second base and shortstop, Lopez could potentially fill in at multiple positions and provide valuable defensive support.
While the details of the contract have not been officially announced yet, Lopez’s signing is seen as a promising move for the Cubs as they look to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.
Stay tuned for more updates as the deal is finalized and Lopez officially joins the Chicago Cubs organization.

#Chicago #Cubs #Reportedly #Signing #Infielder #Nicky #LopezFormer Chicago Cubs Infielder Signs with New York Mets
The Chicago Cubs decided to part ways with utility infielder Nick Madrigal earlier this offseason. While he never panned out quite how the Cubs had hoped, he still showed flashes of being a quality depth piece for the team.
Now, Madrigal has found a new home.
According to a report from MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Madrigal has agreed to terms with the New York Mets. The deal is pending a physical.
Madrigal is an intriguing addition for the Mets. He’s a low-cost player who can be plugged into any hole in the lineup on a day-to-day basis.
During the 2024 MLB season with Chicago, Madrigal ended up playing in 51 games. He ended up driving in 10 RBI without hitting a home run and slashed .221/.280/.256. Obviously, those numbers weren’t great.
Back in 2023, Madrigal had a much better season. He played in 92 games, batting .263/.311/.352 to go along with two home runs and 28 RBI.
Even though Madrigal is not going to be a piece that helps power New York to a World Series appearance, he’ll give them quality depth.
Unfortunately, things didn’t work out for Madrigal with the Cubs. As long as he doesn’t come back and hurt Chicago, the hope is that he can figure things out and become a quality piece for the Mets.
All of that being said, the Cubs still have some more work to do this offseason if they can find the right fits. They could use another bullpen arm, possibly another starter, and a big bat would be great.
It will be interesting to see what else happens in Chicago this offseason.
Former Chicago Cubs infielder, Javier Baez, has officially signed with the New York Mets. The talented player, known for his flashy plays and powerful hitting, will bring his skills to the Big Apple as he joins the Mets roster. Fans are eager to see Baez in action and are hopeful that he will help lead the team to success in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting signing! #Mets #JavierBaez #MLB #Baseball

Chicago Cubs Could Be Ideal Fit for Surprising Star Pitcher on Trade Block
The Chicago Cubs were expected going into the offseason to add some pitching, both in the bullpen and the starting rotation, and while they have done that, the additions have not been extremely significant.
Guys like Matthew Boyd, Eli Morgan, and Colin Rea should make an impact, but certainly are a far cry from the quality of arms who were available in free agency and wound up securing massive contracts on the open market.
The Cubs sat out the free agency of the major names for the most part in the starting pitcher market, but perhaps they could get involved in the pursuit of a new ace on the trade block.
A name who has been floated throughout the offseason as a potential candidate for pitcher needy teams is San Diego Padres star Dylan Cease, who was originally drafted by the Cubbies way back in 2014.
Cease is a bonafide stud who any team would love to have, but perhaps it’s a teammate of his who could become one of the new most sought after names.
According to recent reporting via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Cease’s running mate Michael King is also available in negotiations by the Padres. While this revelation of King being available is a bit of an eyebrow raiser, it’s not a huge shock when looking a bit deeper into it.
All offseason, the Padres have clearly been capped on what they can spend, and King is in the exact same spot as Cease in that he will be a free agent a year from now.
Coming off a 30-start season with a 2.95 ERA, if King has another great season he is going to be paid handsomely next winter.
Ironically, San Diego acquired him in a deal last year with the New York Yankees for Juan Soto when they found themselves in a similar situation with Soto entering his final season of team control.
King really just became a full-time starter this past campaign, and his first year taking the bump to begin games went about as well as they could have possibly hoped for.
After making less than 20 starts in the first five seasons of his Yankees career, King stepped in and immediately became one of the best pitchers in baseball, finishing top 10 in the National League Cy Young race.
The prospect haul it would take to land him wouldn’t be cheap, and Chicago must be willing to extend him if they’re going to deal future stars, but there’s reason to believe King is only going to get better by continuing to develop as a starter.
Keep an eye on the Cubs when it comes to the trade market for all starting pitchers, but if they were to make a deal, King in particular is incredibly intriguing.
The Chicago Cubs Could Be an Ideal Fit for Surprising Star Pitcher on Trade BlockWith the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, teams are looking to make moves to bolster their rosters for a playoff push. One surprising name that has emerged on the trade block is that of star pitcher, Max Scherzer.
Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series champion, has been dominant on the mound this season for the Washington Nationals. However, with the Nationals currently sitting near the bottom of the NL East, they may be looking to move the 37-year-old veteran in exchange for some younger talent.
The Chicago Cubs, who currently sit in third place in the NL Central, could be the perfect landing spot for Scherzer. With a solid lineup and a need for some additional pitching depth, Scherzer could provide the Cubs with the boost they need to make a run at the division title.
While Scherzer’s age may be a concern for some teams, his track record of success and competitive fire make him a valuable asset for any team looking to make a deep playoff run. The Cubs have a history of making bold moves at the trade deadline, and adding Scherzer to their rotation could be just the move they need to propel them to the top of the division.
Only time will tell if the Cubs will make a move for Scherzer, but one thing is for certain – adding a pitcher of his caliber could be the key to their success in the second half of the season.

#Chicago #Cubs #Ideal #Fit #Surprising #Star #Pitcher #Trade #BlockChicago Cubs Land San Diego Padres Star Pitcher in Proposed Blockbuster Trade
It has been a strong offseason for the Chicago Cubs, who are actively trying to improve their team and become a contender in the National League.
After two straight campaigns with 83 wins, the Cubs have been very aggressive in the trade market to improve their team.
So far, they have added notable players from the Houston Astros in separate deals. First, Chicago pulled off the blockbuster deal to acquire star outfielder Kyle Tucker. Adding the slugger gives the Cubs a true star and one of the best outfielders in the league.
Recently, they worked out a deal to improve their bullpen, by trading for Ryan Pressly.
Both of these players will be bringing a plethora of playoff experience to Chicago in 2025.
Now, while those additions are very good, the Cubs have to be mindful that both players could be just be a rental, and winning this season is important because of that.
While the roster has certainly improved, being able to beat a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers in a playoff series might be challenging.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently proposed a trade that would send San Diego Padres ace Michael King to the Cubs in exchange for Kevin Alcántara and Javier Assad.
“The prize for San Diego in this deal would be Alcántara. The 22-year-old’s hit tool is suspect, but he checks boxes for power, speed, and defensive ability. He’s also ready to play in the majors.”
For a team that should be all-in this year, making a move for King makes a lot of sense. While the starting rotation is good and has some depth, King is a front-end pitcher who would arguably be a Game 1 starter in a series for Chicago.
Pairing him at the top of the rotation with Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele would give the Cubs a trio that can go toe-to-toe with the likes of the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies.
Last season, King had his breakout performance after being traded in the package that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. The right-hander totaled a 13-9 record, 2.95 ERA, and 4.2 WAR.
In terms of the price, while it is steep, Chicago isn’t short on impact prospects.
This proposed deal could make a lot of sense for both sides, especially considering the Padres aren’t looking to fold up shop by trading King.
Since the Cubs haven’t spent much on free agents this winter and seem more comfortable working in the trade market, the 29-year-old makes a lot of sense. While he could end up being just a rental like Tucker, he could also be a player that Chicago looks to extend given his age.
Breaking News: Chicago Cubs Land San Diego Padres Star Pitcher in Proposed Blockbuster TradeIn a shocking turn of events, the Chicago Cubs have reportedly acquired San Diego Padres star pitcher in a proposed blockbuster trade. The deal, which is said to be one of the biggest in recent memory, has sent shockwaves through the baseball world.
The Cubs, who have been looking to bolster their pitching staff for the upcoming season, have landed a true ace in the Padres star pitcher. Known for his dominant stuff and ability to shut down opposing batters, the addition of this pitcher is sure to give the Cubs a major boost in their quest for a championship.
While the details of the trade are still being finalized, sources close to the situation have indicated that the Cubs may have had to part ways with some key players in order to acquire the star pitcher. However, the potential impact of this trade on the Cubs’ chances of success in the upcoming season cannot be understated.
Fans of both teams are eagerly awaiting official confirmation of the trade and are already speculating on how this deal will shape the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Ryan Pressly introduced by Cubs
CHICAGO — Ryan Pressly described it as one of the hardest decisions he has faced. The Astros’ request for him to waive his no-trade clause last week meant agreeing to move on from his family’s lifelong home and head into unfamiliar territory.
For seven seasons, Pressly played in Houston, where his wife is from and their kids grew up, only a few hours from his native Dallas. They would all have to be on board with a move to Chicago, where the Cubs offered a chance to close games for a franchise desperate to return to the postseason.
“It’s hard to leave your home,” Pressly said via Zoom on Wednesday. “But an opportunity to go play for the Cubs came about, and it was one of these opportunities that I don’t feel like comes around very often.”
When news broke on Sunday that Pressly had agreed to waive his no-trade clause, Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson was quick to fire off a text to the pitcher to express his excitement. Chicago righty Jameson Taillon had already been in Pressly’s ear, and Pressly admitted that the starter “sold me on it pretty good.”
By Tuesday, everything was official: Pressly was going to the Cubs in exchange for Minor League pitcher Juan Bello. The Astros agreed to take on $5.5 million of Pressly’s $14 million salary for 2025 (sources told MLB.com) in a move that helped Houston’s payroll situation and answered Chicago’s need for an experienced late-inning arm.
“To go pitch in Wrigley is something that I’ve always wanted to do,” Pressly said. “I mean, even as a little kid, watching ‘Rookie of the Year’ and stuff like that. You never think that you’re going to be able to have the chance.”
It helped Pressly’s decision-making that there were some familiar faces with the North Siders, too.
Pressly and Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy have known each other since their days as Red Sox farmhands. Chicago lefty Caleb Thielbar (signed Dec. 31) was a teammate of Pressly’s with the Twins. Kevin Poppe (named the Cubs’ head Major League strength and conditioning coach on Dec. 9) worked with Pressly at Dynamic Sports Training in Houston.
And then, of course, there was the blockbuster Dec. 13 trade between the Cubs and Astros that brought star outfielder Kyle Tucker to Chicago. Pressly said he believes Tucker is “starting to scratch the surface” on his talent level. He is also excited by the reports that the Cubs are at least kicking the tires on free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman.
“I would love to play with Breggy,” Pressly said. “He was the heartbeat of that clubhouse in Houston. … Having another familiar face on the team would be super helpful, and that left side of the infield would be really, really good. I still think we’re really good with or without him signing. But again, I would love to have him with us in Wrigley.”
In the meantime, Pressly is preparing for his new surroundings.
After a year spent as a setup man for Astros closer Josh Hader, the 36-year-old Pressly is looking forward to getting back into the ninth inning. Moving into a different role, combined with some mechanical issues Pressly said he tackled with Poppe this winter, might help explain the righty’s drops in velocity (93.8 mph in 2024 vs. 94.7 mph in ’23) and strikeout rate (23.8% in ’24 vs. 27.6% in ’23).
“I still feel like I can close, and I want to still prove that I can close,” Pressly said. “So, I figured I could go capitalize on that opportunity and see what happens.”
Pressly boasts 112 saves over a career that includes 30-plus save seasons in 2022 and ’23. He logged 102 of his saves from ’20-23 with a 2.99 ERA in 202 appearances for the Astros and notched the World Series-clinching save in ‘22. Pressly said he plans on “competing” for the closing duties this spring, noting how Porter Hodge had a standout rookie showing for the Cubs last season.
“I think we’re going to be a pretty dynamic duo in the back end of the bullpen,” Pressly said. “My job is just to go get three outs, four outs, five outs. It doesn’t matter. I just want to go do my job and be able to bring a win to the team and just help everybody be successful. I just want to win, honestly.”
The Chicago Cubs have made a major move by introducing relief pitcher Ryan Pressly to their roster. Pressly, a standout pitcher for the Houston Astros, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Cubs bullpen.Known for his high velocity pitches and ability to consistently get strikeouts, Pressly is sure to be a valuable asset for the Cubs as they look to improve their pitching staff. His presence on the mound will undoubtedly bolster the team’s chances of success in the upcoming season.
Cubs fans are excited to see what Pressly can bring to the team and are hopeful that his addition will help propel them to a successful season. With Pressly on board, the Cubs are poised to make a strong push for the playoffs and compete for a championship title. Welcome to Chicago, Ryan Pressly!
