  • Peter Dinklage’s Reboot Of ’80s Cult Classic With 92% RT Score Lands Release Date After 2-Year Delay

Almost two years after it impressed critics at several festivals, Peter Dinklage’s reboot of the ’80s cult classic The Toxic Avenger has finally secured a theatrical release in late 2025. The black comedy superhero franchise began with 1984 in Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman’s feature that focused on a ridiculed janitor turned mutant crimefighter. The Toxic Avenger spawned a successful franchise that included three sequels, a stage musical, an animated series, and more, with Macon Blair helming the Toxic Avenger reboot that was originally intended to premiere in 2023.

After a lengthy delay as it searched for a distributor, Deadline reports that Legendary Pictures and Troma Entertainment’s Toxic Avenger has finally been slated for a theatrical release on August 29. The movie stars Dinklage as the hero once known as Winston Gooze as he attempts to strike a balance between fighting corrupt CEOs and rebuilding his relationship with his son. The feature has 92% on Rotten Tomatoes after various festival appearances. Cineverse will handle distribution for the unrated theatrical run in the US and Canada, as well as the movie’s home release on digital storefronts, streaming, and physical media.

What We Know About The Toxic Avenger’s Release Date Delay

The Movie Received A Drastic Rework That Left Distributors Nervous

Despite the cult status of the Toxic Avenger franchise, the modern reimagining has had trouble finding its way to screens ever since intentions of a reboot were announced in 2010. Initially envisioned as a more family-friendly reboot in the vein of the Toxic Crusaders animated series, it took eight years for the movie to be acquired by Legendary in 2018, and another year for Blair to join in 2019. By the time cameras began rolling in Bulgaria in 2021, it was clear from Blair’s comments on the movie’s practical gore that it would be aimed at a more mature audience.

Cineverse may be more keen on taking a gamble…

This element, however, would play into The Toxic Avenger’s struggle to find a distributor. Though it garnered acclaim from critics at festivals, distributors were reluctant to pick up the feature in case the graphic content severely limited how it could be released to the point that certain experts raised concerns that it could potentially become lost media. However, with the success of R-rated features such as Deadpool & Wolverine and Gladiator II in 2024, Cineverse may be more keen on taking a gamble in case The Toxic Avenger could attract similar success.

The Toxic Avenger Aversion Never Made Sense

The Movie Is Part Of A Long Legacy

The long delay in bringing the remake of the iconic Troma movie to the screen is somewhat bizarre, as its approach to the material, while intense, is generally in keeping with the rest of the franchise as well as the company’s output. While Troma Entertainment is a wide-ranging studio and distributor whose previous work includes distributing the iconic Studio Ghibli fantasy movie My Neighbor Totoro, they are best known for creating and distributing genre movies and exploitation titles that push the envelope in terms of content and taste.

Troma developed this reputation over the course of the 1980s with movies including the slasher-adjacent titles Mother’s Day, Bloodbath in Psycho Town, and Luther The Geek. Many of their releases announced their intentions to present bold, envelope-pushing ideas in their titles, including 1986’s Class of Nuke ‘Em High, 1987’s Surf Nazis Must Die, 1988’s Rabid Grannies, 1990’s A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell, and 1996’s Killer Condom.

Killer Condom is based on a German graphic novel and had its titular monster designed by Alien‘s H.R. Giger.

While The Toxic Avenger might feel brash when compared to Blair’s more low-key directorial debut I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, it is hardly shocking when held against the previous output of Troma itself. It also boasts one of the company’s most exciting ensemble casts, as in addition to Dinklage, it features Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, Sarah Niles, Julia Davis, Julian Kostov, and Elijah Wood. While it may never be a blockbuster tentpole, it makes sense to give the movie a chance in theaters.

Our Take On The Toxic Avenger’s Long-Awaited Release Date

Fears About The Movie’s Content Could Be A Strong Selling Point

The Toxic Avenger protesting in front of signs

While fellow dark cult-classic hero The Crow’s 2024 reboot failed to please audiences and critics, The Toxic Avenger is already in a stronger position to potentially become one of 2025’s cinematic successes. After earning a high Rotten Tomatoes critic score in 2023 and releasing a bloody and brutal red band trailer in October 2024, the reboot of the cult classic has given moviegoers surprisingly lofty expectations.

The Crow starred Bill Skarsgård as a new version of the iconic comic book character, who was originally portrayed onscreen by the late Brandon Lee in 1994.

When paired with its struggle to find a distributor and discussions about its graphic content, many potential viewers unfamiliar with the project may be keen to give the movie a viewing based on those concerns alone out of curiosity once The Toxic Avenger arrives in theaters in August.

  • “I was offered a crazy amount of money”: Will Ferrell’s Biggest Reason For Not Making Elf 2 Despite 2003 Film’s Cult Classic Status

Actor Will Ferrell is known for his comedic performances in a string of commercially successful movies. One of the most popular movies in Ferrell’s filmography is the 2003 Christmas comedy Elf, directed by Jon Favreau, which was a major hit at the box office. As a result, a sequel seemed guaranteed, and that possibility has been discussed over the years.

Will Ferrell’s Elf was a huge hit (Credit: New Line Cinema).

While there have been some rumors suggesting a sequel was in the works, Ferrell has remained adamant about not wanting to make another installment. During a recent podcast appearance, the actor was asked about why a sequel to the 2003 cult classic never materialized. Ferrell revealed his hesitance to make it for one understandable reason. Here is what Will Ferrell had to say about the Elf not getting a sequel.

Will Ferrell shared the real reason why Elf 2 never…

I was offered a crazy amount of money: Will Ferrell’s Biggest Reason For Not Making Elf 2 Despite 2003 Film’s Cult Classic Status

Will Ferrell has been offered a hefty sum of money to reprise his role as Buddy the Elf in a sequel to the beloved holiday film Elf. However, the comedian has turned down the opportunity, citing his desire to leave the original film untouched.

In a recent interview, Ferrell explained that while he appreciates the financial incentive, he believes that Elf’s legacy should remain untarnished. “Elf is a classic, and I think it’s best left as a standalone film,” he said. “I don’t want to risk ruining what we created with a subpar sequel.”

Ferrell’s decision has disappointed many fans who have been clamoring for a follow-up to the 2003 hit. Despite the potential financial gain, the actor is staying true to his artistic integrity and choosing not to cash in on the film’s success.

While Elf 2 may never come to fruition, fans can still enjoy the original film’s timeless humor and heartwarming message every holiday season. And who knows, maybe someday Ferrell will have a change of heart and don the green tights once again. Until then, we’ll just have to settle for rewatching the original on repeat.

  • ‘Putricia for president’: Sydney’s blooming corpse flower becomes a cult hero – to those who can’t smell her | Plants

In a Sydney greenhouse, a tall pointed flower is about to bloom for the first time in years.

To the scientific community, the Botanic Gardens of Sydney’s corpse flower is known as amorphophallus titanum, which translates to large, deformed penis. But online, the rare endangered plant has taken on a new name: Putricia.

Corpse flowers like Putricia are native to western Sumatra, Indonesia. It’s the first time a corpse flower has bloomed in the Royal Botanic Garden in 15 years – and when they do blossom, they last just 24-48 hours, and emit a smell likened to “a rotting carcass,” says Daniella Pasqualini, the botanic gardens’ horticultural development supervisor.

For days, people in Sydney have been visiting Putricia – a combination of “putrid” and “Patricia”, chosen by an internal staff vote in honour of the smell it emits when it flowers.

Online, away from any potential smell, thousands are watching a livestream of Putricia, waiting for her to blossom in front of a pale purple curtain.

    ‘Putricia’ corpse flower live stream

On Wednesday, 3,000 people were watching the live stream at some points and comments in the live chat were non-stop. “Anyone else not wearing deodorant today in solidarity?” wrote one. Others went a step further, effectively worshipping Putricia.

“People have become quite obsessed with her,” Pasqualini says. “She’s taken on a life of her own.”

    Blessed Be the Bloom

During Wednesday’s live stream chat, viewers made their feelings for the corpse flower known.

“Putricia for president,” one viewer commented. “Putricia for Aussie Queen,” said another.

“Putricia is too pure for political shenanigans,” someone else opined.

One viewer pondered whether Putricia “thinks we stink”. Another reminded everyone of their place: “I don’t think she even thinks of us. Not even a second thought. She’s above us.”

On Sunday Beatrice Callaghan started a forum on Discord to share resources, updates and photos of Putricia. Eleven people joined that night. In just three days, the number surpassed 200.

A series of acronyms and in-jokes have emerged, including We Do Not Eat Putricia (WDNEA) – a response to regular questions about whether the plant is edible and what it tastes like – and Blessed Be the Bloom (BBTB), a fairly new acronym that Callaghan understands is a reference to Blessed Be the Fruit from The Handmaid’s Tale, a greeting that encourages fertility.

But putting Putricia under pressure to bloom is not accepted by the community of viewers, or the Botanic Gardens.

“We Do Not Rush Putricia! It’s like waiting for a baby to be born,” the Botanic Gardens of Sydney responded to a viewer who asked in a Q&A on the live stream when Putricia will flower. This invited a flood of viewers to comment “WDNRP” with the energy of a devoted religious chant (but typed, and about a plant).

    skip past newsletter promotion

“There’s obviously a general interest in botany and science amongst a lot of people in the chat, but I would say a lot of it is people just enjoying the community vibe that has sprung up around it,” Callaghan says.

    International fans

Putricia has drawn people from across the globe, with people from California, Italy, Nigeria and Canada engaging in Callaghan’s Discord server. One viewer in the US said they have been watching Putricia “on night shifts”.

“The whole thing is so compelling,” they said.

Some viewers in the Discord server have been creating watercolour and crochet fan art of Putricia, while others have pulled together a Spotify playlist.

“It’s just become kind of this bizarre creative energy that sprung up around her, and I think a lot of people are just really drawn to that,” Callaghan says.

A lot of people have openly said they never liked plants until they discovered Putricia,” Pasqualini says.

She thinks Putricia, and the personality that has been made for her by viewers online, comes out of a landscape of negativity in the news at the moment.

“Cost of living, housing crisis, Donald Trump, all this stuff happening … Does she represent hope? Or is it just simply a distraction from things?,” Pasqualini says.

Users in the Discord chat said the sense of community is part of the draw.

“Putricia is the only vibe we need for 2025,” one said. “She has taught patience, positivity and community spirit and brought people from around the world together.”

“It’s been ages since I’ve been in a chat that’s stayed so positive for so long,” another remarked.

Meet Putricia, Sydney’s newest sensation and potential presidential candidate. This larger-than-life corpse flower has captured the hearts of many, despite her less-than-pleasant aroma.

Putricia, also known as the Amorphophallus titanum, is currently blooming at the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney. Her putrid smell, likened to rotting flesh, may be off-putting to some, but to her loyal fans, she is a symbol of resilience and beauty.

Despite her foul odor, Putricia has managed to attract a cult following of admirers who are drawn to her unique appearance and rare blooming cycle. Many have even taken to social media to express their admiration for the smelly superstar, with some even calling for her to run for president.

While Putricia may not be everyone’s cup of tea, there’s no denying her impact on the plant world. So if you find yourself in Sydney, be sure to pay a visit to the Royal Botanic Garden and witness the magic of Putricia for yourself. Who knows, maybe one day she’ll be running the country – or at least the garden. #PutriciaForPresident

  • Yankees’ latest free agent signing is return of cult hero

Yankees’ latest free agent signing is return of cult hero

The cult hero of the 2021 Yankees, a journeyman infielder who grew up in the Bronx, is returning to the organization after spending two seasons with the Angels and all of last year as a Braves minor leaguer.

Slick-fielding shortstop Andrew Velazquez is back with the Yankees on a minor-league deal, Jack Curry of YES reported Friday on X.

Velazquez, 30, will compete for a spot on the Yankees’ bench during spring training, but most likely begin the season in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Velazquez has bounced around a lot in his 13 professional seasons, mostly as a minor leaguer. A career .189 hitter with 12 homers, 40 steals and 624 plate appearances, the switch-hitter played 125 of his 275 games in 2022 with the Angels. In 223 games at shortstop, he has a .973 fielding percentage that is higher than the .971 Anthony Volpe compiled playing short for the Yankees the last two seasons as a Gold Glove winner in 2023 and Gold Glove finalist in 2024.

When Gleyber Torres went on the injured list in August 2021 during his second of two seasons playing shortstop for the Yankees, Velazquez went from Triple-A non-roster player to big-league starter for a month.

For the Yankees, Velazquez lived up to his reputation as a standout fielder and more. In addition to making a lot of good plays at short, he contributed some clutch hits, including a first-career homer on Aug. 21 at Yankee Stadium.

Family members cried in the stands watching Velazquez run the bases after a homer came in a win over the Twins that was the Yankees’ ninth during a 14-game winning streak that is the franchise’s longest since 1962.

Velazquez hit .224 with one homer and six RBI in 28 games with the Yankees. He was batting .250 before going 3-for-19 in his last 12 games.

Velazquez also made the Yankees’ Wild Card Game roster in 2021 and started at shortstop in the 6-2 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park, going 0-for-1 with a flyout to left before leaving for a pinch-hitter.

Velazquez played for the Braves’ Triple-A Gwinnett affiliate last season, hitting .242 with a career-high 16 homers, 48 RBI and .692 OPS in 118 games.

This winter he’s played in the Puerto Rican Winter League and batted .158 with three homers and 7 RBIs in 35 games with Ponce.

Velazquez is the first addition of the new year for the Yankees, who added seven players to their 40-man roster in December — first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, left-handed starter Max Fried and reliever Jonathan Loaisiga in free agent signings, outfielder Cody Bellinger. closer Devin Williams, reliever Fernandez Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson in trades.

  • Magikarp Madness: Exploring the Cult of the Splashing Pokemon

Magikarp Madness: Exploring the Cult of the Splashing Pokemon

In the world of Pokemon, there are some creatures that are beloved by fans for their strength, speed, or cuteness. But one Pokemon that has captured the hearts of many despite its seemingly useless abilities is Magikarp. This unassuming fish Pokemon may not have much going for it in terms of battle prowess, but it has developed a cult following among trainers and fans alike.

Magikarp is known for its signature move, Splash, which does absolutely nothing in battles. In fact, Magikarp is often considered one of the weakest Pokemon in the game, with low stats and limited move options. Despite this, Magikarp has become a symbol of perseverance and determination for many fans.

The cult of Magikarp has inspired a variety of merchandise, fan art, and even a popular mobile game called Magikarp Jump. In this game, players train their Magikarp to jump as high as possible and compete in leagues against other trainers. The game has become a hit among fans who appreciate the humor and charm of the lovable fish Pokemon.

Magikarp’s evolution into Gyarados, a powerful and fearsome dragon-type Pokemon, is also a source of fascination for fans. Many trainers take on the challenge of raising a Magikarp to level 20 in order to witness its transformation into Gyarados. The contrast between the weak and helpless Magikarp and the mighty Gyarados is a testament to the potential for growth and change in all of us.

The Magikarp cult has also led to a number of memes and jokes within the Pokemon community. Fans have created hilarious videos and images that poke fun at Magikarp’s seemingly useless abilities, but also celebrate its underdog status and endearing qualities.

Overall, the cult of Magikarp is a testament to the power of fandom and the ability of even the weakest Pokemon to capture the hearts of trainers and fans. Magikarp may not be the strongest or most impressive Pokemon, but its charm and spirit have made it a beloved icon in the world of Pokemon. So next time you encounter a Magikarp in the wild, take a moment to appreciate its unique appeal and remember that even the most unlikely heroes can inspire greatness.
